not really... they have gotten tons of different kinds of weapons already. And in the middle east, where security isnt as strong guarding facilities, it is possible if there is a nuke they might possibly be able to aqquire one in time if they are allowed to gain strength like they are doing.
I'm definitely not the right guy to answer this but I believe I've read somewhere that it's not the nuke that is the issue North America needs to worry about, its will they obtain the ability to launch a long range missile. I think that we know they might could make a nuke but they can launch it from their ME safe spots all the way here the way I remember it.
Nukes are the nightmare scenario --- but we're gradually reaching the point where technology will make conventional & terror warfare laughably convenient.

Going to assume it would be insanely difficult to smuggle a nuclear device into America. We'd probably know before the device even traveled 500 yards in Iran, Pakistan, North Korea, etc.
But who knows, maybe I'm being a bit naive with regards to USA intelligence/surveillance, and maybe I've seen too many James Bond movies. I mean, ISIS was supposed to be the JV team, and look how that turned out. Maybe I shouldn't have 100% blind-faith in USA/Western intelligence & foresight.
Anyway, as you said --- the real threat with nuke is long-range launch. There are a few ME nations with long-range capability, but I think Europe is their max range? Also, as of now, I don't think ISIS has even sniffed any of the long-range facilities. If there really was a danger, I'd imagine USA would finally take off the gloves. Letting ISIS capture some shithole village is one thing, but I doubt we'd let ISIS capture a big-time military facility.
Always the threat of a rogue nation (Pakistan, North Korea, Iran) --- or a nation falling into chaos & revolution, and then the bad guys capture weapons & bases.
Think the technology to make a nuke, a rudimentary 1970's should be out there in the black market, along with crooked scientist looking for the highest bid... Turkey doesnt have nukes? Cause if they do, pretty sure they would sell one to IS.

Again...The only way to secure worldwide safety for every other county is to go wipe them off the map completely.
