Quick background, I used to golf in college (about 8 years ago) and still have my trusty Spalding set from Wal-Mart but I haven't golfed in a few years.

I have more time now and since we live on a golf course, I'm thinking about picking it back up. I don't want to break the bank with a set but I do want something that I'm not upgrading in a year or 2. So what gets me the most bang for my buck? Specifically irons, maybe upgrade drivers down the road.

I would prefer a fairly forgiving set and something that gets the ball up in the air. Adams golf seems to be an inexpensive set and great reviews, but I don't want too entry level. $500 or less?

TIA

Horrible idea! Pings are custom fit and have a lot of variances in the different dot colors and shaft lengths from one set to another. Buying used Pings is like buying a used baseball glove.

OTOH, if you want to upgrade your budget a little more and get fitted for some Pings, they will last you a lifetime. They will be adjusted to your height/swing speed/ etc and will be worth it! Last time I checked, they run somewhere in the $800 range which may or may not include the fitting depending on who you buy them from.

the new MP 57 irons by Mizuno are very nice, you can find them around for the middle 5's for a set 3-pw-they are a cavity back muscle design

Pings are a great way to go, but get fitted. Look at the G5 set of irons. They are last years models and still readily available. Should be able to get a new set of steel shafts for $500.

I didn't mean randomly pickup a set. Standard black dot if you don't care. I played flat orange for a while and it turned my swing into a fade. I also like the MP 25's, you can bend these anyway you like. But the thing I like about Ping irons are the extra distance and forgiveness. Negatives are they suck around greens and don't have the precision of a blade.
