What do you call soft drinks?

Cool map. I'm from Peoria Illinois and everyone calls it soda, it's weird how there is a little pocket around St Louis that calls it that.

I can attest that down South they call it Coke.

Coke here in the South. A few will say or prefer Pepsi, but Pepsi was made in the South, and made famous up North.

I always thought people who called it pop were kind of funny. Turn out us people in the bottom nook of Florida who call it soda are in the minority.

Where I come from we call them "coke". At a restaurant for example the waiter will ask what type of coke you want and you will say Dr. Pepper.

I know other regions say "pop" "soda" etc

Why would you call it "Coke"?

It's like asking somebody what kind of "Pepsi" they want and them answering "Mountain Dew"

That's just how it is down here too. Coke is generic for soda. It's like Kleenex and tissue.

Yeah, when I moved from New England to Texas years ago, I thought it was strange, if you actually wanted a Coke at a restaurant, you had to order it twice:

Waiter: What would you like to drink?
Me: Coke
Waiter: What kind?
Me: Um... Coke
Waiter: ok


So, this conversation would actually make sense:

Waiter: What would you like to drink?
Me: Coke
Waiter: What kind?
Me: ... Pepsi
Waiter: ok

Somewhat related topic; When Michael Jackson was under investigation for being a pedophile and it came out he called wine "Jesus Juice" to the kids and for them to drink, I now call wine Jesus Juice. For an occasion like Thanksgiving or something and I'm walking out the door to pick up some supplies the wife may ask where I'm going and I'll say I'm off to pick up some Jesus Juice. It's my own inside joke I guess.
