What Coach Can Turn Syracuse Around?

I think it has to be a guy from the Northeast. Syracuse can't go and hire a Terry or Tommy Bowden. Can you picture either of those guys with their southern twang trying to fit in at Syracuse University? No way!

Then you have a guy like Lane Kiffin who I wouldn't mind having as the coach of my team. He was also an USC assistant at the same time Syracuse athletic director Darryl Gross was employed by the school. So there is a tie. Then again Al Davis is an SU alum and if Syracuse U is getting any money from Mr. Davis I highly doubt Gross would jeopardize that by hiring Kiffin. Plus, where I think he will be a great college coach he doesn't exactly know his way around the Northeast. He has never recruited these schools, and just don't see him as a great fit.

The man I have my eye on is Turner Gil, head coach at the University of Buffalo. Strategy wise he is an excellent coach. He turned perennial doormat Buffalo into a contender in the MAC. He has recruited the northeast while at Buffalo so he is familiar with the High School coaches where he will be going.

The importance of the next hire cannot be put into words. This once respectable program is a shell out it's former self. While there is lots of work ahead I don't think a turnaround is out of question. Syracuse has the money to throw at any coaching candidate. They also have the facilities to attract athletes. Not that playing in the Carrier Dome is enticing, but their practice and workout facilities are top notch. The program has tradition they just need someone to lead them in the right direction.

Syracuse has hired a firm to help search for the next coach, but I would like to hear from therx who the best candidate for the job would be.

Have you seen the movie("The Express")? I thought it was pretty good. I'll bet you are not a Texas Longhorn fan! :ohno:

i'm actually embarrassed to say that I haven't seen the movie yet. I had passes to an advanced viewing , but was too hung up with work to make it. Seeing it is on my short list of things to do.

Now that we have coaches of all colors, have we ever had a coach of (North American Indian) extraction ; Sonny Sixkiller always stood out in my mind (that is one "hard hitting" name I always liked).

How about an Asian or Samoan or one of thos Neanderthal types that seems to be in style now days(Gieco TV ads).

Syracuse University has a chance to make history.

The OL coach at UF, Steve Addazio, has been mentioned for this job. He is a Syracuse Alum and was an assistant there at some point. I've heard him mentioned by a few national pundits. He's been w/ Meyer for quite a while....

So Doug Marrone it is? Can't say I expected this, or even heard of him for that matter, but after doing some research I guess it's worth a shot. Now I wanted Turner Gil and not sure what happened there, but at least we got a Syracuse guy who bleeds Orange like myself. He wants to be here more than anyone else. This is his dream job. He knows the area, and will reportedly be bringing along an excellent recruiter.

Does anyone else have any thoughts? I mean I can't complain. After Holtz turned them down I think Gross got nervous that nobody wants the job, which is probably the truth, so he offered to someone he knew wouldn't turn the job down

I think Marrone is a great hire with a lot of upside potential. Also has the reputation of being a very good recruiter.
