I just hate to see the dealer have an ace showing! Well you know that he doesnt ahve 21, but he may draw to a 21. It just seems that the dealer NEVER busts on that ace!!
I usually like to take a hit on 17 against an ace showing! This of course depends on my active count of the cards at the moment, but a 17 is a losing proposition against an ace!!
If the count is there for you for a bunch of low cards left in the deck, taking that hit on 17 can be save you some money!

I don't think so. This could only work on a single ( maybe double-deck) with penetration you would never find. I think this is a losing strategy. Hard 17 loses against ace. You have a bad hand ( but there are far worse) ! I think , long-term... standing is preferable.
To work this would need a game you couldn't find, in a casino.
I'm rusty on Blackjack, but don't buy this theory, unless deck(s) are dealt to the end. It won't work online, and Sherman seems to like on-line casinos.

I was in Vegas earlier this year with a few buddies and we were CRUSHING the casino. Not literally, but we were on a good run that got the notice of the pit. Next thing we know a guy talks to the pit, sits down signs a marker and starts making strange plays (not basic strategy and certainly not counting cards). While his plays have nothing to do with the probability of us winning hands we (5) ALL left the table at the same time after deciding after less than 10 hands that something wasn't right (either the player or the vibe). The pit and the guy asked us why we were leaving so we all laughed and kept moving. We always thought the player was affiliated with the casino in some way.
I think they are, Gamblers by nature are superstitous. They can be thrown off there game easily at times. How many times have you heard someone complain about dealers being changed when the players are on a run of good luck. I seriously doubt you'd see them at a low stakes table but personally I think they are still used to some extent.
