Reports: Teen girls made pact to get pregnant

GLOUCESTER, Mass. (AP) — A pact made by a group of teens to get pregnant and raise their babies together is at least partly behind a sudden spike in pregnancies at Gloucester High School, school officials said.
Principal Joseph Sullivan told Time magazine in a story published Wednesday that the girls confessed to making the pact after the school began investigating a rise in pregnancies that has left 17 girls at the school carrying a child. Normally, there are about four pregnancies a year at the school.
Sullivan told Time that nearly half of the expecting students, none over 16, were involved. Sullivan said students were coming to the school clinic multiple times to get pregnancy tests, and "seemed more upset when they weren't pregnant than when they were."
Some of the girls reacted to the news they were pregnant with high fives and plans for baby showers, Sullivan said. One of the fathers "is a 24-year-old homeless guy," Sullivan told the magazine.
Superintendent Christopher Farmer confirmed the deal to WBZ-TV, saying the girls had "an agreement to get pregnant."
He said the girls are generally "girls who lack self-esteem and have a lack of love in their life."
Christen Callahan, a former Gloucester High School student who had a child when she was 15, said on NBC's "Today" show that some of the girls would ask her about her own pregnancy.
"They would say stuff like, oh, I think my parents would be fine with it and they would help me, stuff like that," Callahan said.
But she said she had no firsthand knowledge of a pact between the girls to get pregnant.
"They were just kind of like curious about it, they never actually came out and said it," Callahan said.
The first reports of the students' apparent plan to get pregnant were in the Gloucester Daily Times in March, when Sullivan said students were reporting that the girls were getting pregnant on purpose.
The rash of pregnancies has shaken the seaside city about 30 miles north of Boston. Last month, two officials at the high school health center resigned to protest the resistance from the local hospital to the confidential distribution of contraceptives. The hospital administers the state money that funds the clinic.

So much for the Christian Right's "Family Values"...then again, they are starting families. Maybe that's what the RR intended.

A unified one world religion would do a lot to bring morals to our cretinous society.

For a variety of reasons, the decision on when to have sex is made by those involved and not anyone else.

Parents can have all the hopes and plans they wish for their teenagers, but it's almost a certainty those teenagers will not consult them for permission on when to have sex - whether still minors or 18+ years old.

There are no unwanted teenage pregnancies in the middle east.

Girls are married off when they are twelve years old and become highly experienced mothers and cockbobbers by the time they're fourteen.

B'man--I agree that the decision is made by the individual (not including rape). However, the decisions should be based on a thought process in which consequences/risks are taken into consideration, such as "if I have sex, I may get ________" (insert: pregnant, an STD, a reputation as a slut, etc.). It is the logical thought process that is/should be taught by the parents, from early developmental ages (such as teaching the child "If I touch the stove, it will burn/hurt").

Trust me at 16, I was hornier than a motherf'cker and what little my parents taught me about sex (as I learned more from friends, school, etc.) usually was buried in the depths of this empty head. However, I knew the consequences that if I knocked up a girl it would/could change my life significantly.

(Now the irony is that Mrs. Artie and I are having trouble in Little Artie making. And no, it's not the 150lbs of dog in the bed. Long story. Hey, maybe we can adopt one of the Massachusetts Teen Pact babies. Will update you via email one day on this whole situation if you are interested/curious.)

Don't be too sure that precisely such information was shared and taught to these young ladies. As it is to literally millions of teenage boys and girls every single day across the USA.

And when it's all done, they still decide when and where and unfortunately more than you and I might like choose to do so in foolish fashion.

For one or two of them to have a moment of indiscretion and end up pregnant, that happens everyday, everywhere. For 17 of them to make a pact and not one of them have the common sense to make the right decision is unbelievable.

Heard some crazy stories from a business associate re: his 15 year old daughter, her My Space page, and some of the sh!t he discovered about nearly every kid in her school. May start a new thread later re: this topic. Maybe I'm just naive...

My wife raised my three from age 14/10/8 up to adult age and I'm glad that one thing she did was only permit one good PC in the house and it was in the family room where everyone hung out for television, eating etc

I personally consider the internet something that should not be permitted without an adult "chaperone" on hand. But obviously many parents don't maintain such a standard.

Smart on her part.

The guy I know actually had his computer in the kitchen/"great" room, but it turned out that his daughter was smart enough to switch windows quickly enough, etc (sort of like I do when Mrs. Artie is in a bad mood and sees that I am on the Rx.). Needless to say, he now monitors every key stroke through some software. Sad that parents have to worry about the crazies on the internet and what their children are doing on the PC.
