GAME NOTES: The top matchup of the week will take place in Madison Square
Garden tonight, as the fourth-ranked Syracuse Orange and the fifth-ranked
Oklahoma State Cowboys get together in the second game of the Jimmy V Classic.
Jim Boeheim's troops are off to another fast start, as they have won each of
their first seven games, including Saturday's 68-55 win over Colgate. While
the Raiders are not exactly considered top-notch competition, victories over
ranked foes like Mississippi State and Memphis en route to the Coaches vs.
Cancer Classic title have legitimized Syracuse as one of the top teams in the
country. The team will get another stiff challenge this evening from the
Cowboys, who sport their own unblemished record, sitting at 5-0. Eddie
Sutton's squad is coming off its most impressive win of the season, blowing
out Washington State by a score of 81-29. Syracuse holds a 2-1 advantage in
the all-time series with OSU, gaining that edge with a 68-56 win over the
Cowboys in the second round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament. The first game of
the Jimmy V Classic double-header this year has the Memphis Tigers taking on
the 11th-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers.
OSU held Washington State to a mere 10 points in the first half and poured it
on in the second stanza to post the 52-point romp. The Cowboys outrebounded
the Cougars 45-22 and held WSU to a mere 16 percent shooting in the first
half. John Lucas led the way offensively with 19 points. Joey Graham
added 18 points, while Frans Steyn came off the bench to chip in with a
career-high 15. This season, the Cowboys have shot the ball extremely well
(.544). The good fortune has extended beyond the arc (.423) as well as from
the charity stripe (.855). Lucas is an All-American candidate this year and
has definitely looked the part, pacing the team with a hefty 21.2 ppg.
Graham provides another prolific scorer for OSU, coming in at 18.2 ppg.
Veteran forward Ivan McFarlin is yet another offensive threat at 10.2 ppg.
Daniel Bobik is adding just under six points per game this year (5.8), but
is the Big 12's leading returning three-point shooter and could help send
this team to a new level once he gets in a groove.
The Orange have their own All-American candidate and potential National Player
of the Year in the form of forward Hakim Warrick. The 6-9 Warrick is coming
off a huge performance against Colgate, where he poured in a game-high 23
points and just missed out on a double-double with nine rebounds. Sophomore
Terrence Roberts came off the bench to add 13 points and eight rebounds to the
cause, while guards Gerry McNamara and Josh Pace each tallied 12 points in the
victory. The bigger Orange abused Colgate on the boards (40-24) and Syracuse's
bench outscored the Raiders' bench by a count of 20-9. Warrick has been
everything advertised thus far, averaging a near double-double with team-highs
of 19.9 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, while shooting 61.4 percent from the
floor. McNamara is one of the nation's top sharpshooters, but has yet to
really get on track, connecting on just 40.3 percent of his shots. Despite
the mediocre shooting percentage, the explosive McNamara is still averaging
15.1 ppg. Pace has been much more accurate (.564), adding 10.4 ppg to the
cause. The defensive effort has been solid as well this year, as opponents are
netting just 56.7 ppg and being held under 35 percent shooting from the floor
(.343), including a mere .288 effort from long range.
The Orange are certainly no strangers to the bright lights of Madison Square
Garden, having already won the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic there earlier this
year. The Cowboys have cruised through the beginning of their slate, but have
yet to be tested. They will get just that from Syracuse this evening, as the
Orange should win a tight affair.
