U.S. money transfer company Western Union has donated $50,000 to help victims of the Jan. 8 earthquake, which killed at least 23 people and left more than 2,000 homeless, the Red Cross said Friday. The donation came through Western Union's Our World, Our Family program. The company has also announced accounts through which people can wire money to the cause from the United States and Costa Rica. U.S. residents can send up to $1,000 through the account EARTHQUAKERELIEF, CR, according to a press release from Western Union and the Red Cross.

In Costa Rica, donors can use the account AYUDATERREMOTO, CR. The Red Cross also announced Friday that donations may be made through its Web site, www.cruzroja.or.cr.— January, 16, 2009, 7:36 p.m.
