lol - nope, I own a split-level house, my computer is in my office on the level above the 'great room' where the TV is. Not much to report, an oil refinery has a fire and reports of some people injured, but nothing else so far. Funny thing though - the woman reporter said the Japanese had issued warnings to the coast (presumably their own) to watch for waves up to 3 feet high - now, I know as a whole they tend to be shorter than Americans, but THREE feet and they gotta worry?

p.s. The funniest thing - the reporter never caught her error - had of course to be 30 feet.

TOKYO — A strong quake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.8 rocked the northern Japan island of Hokkaido (search) early Friday morning, knocking out power and starting a fire in an industrial area.

The government warned local residents to avoid coastal areas due to the possibility of a tidal wave, or tsunami (search).

The quake was strong enough to rock buildings on the island and shake books and other objects off shelves. Japan's public broadcaster NHK reported that at least several people had been injured and a fire had broken out in the city of Tomakomai (search).

Black plumes of smoke and flames could be seen leaping from the site in an industrial area.
