Todays pitching matchup in Pittsburgh - San Diego features Wells vs. Wells. Darwins theory pointed this out earlier so I cant take credit for it but I wonder when was the last time two oppositing starting pitchers had identical last names.

I wonder if this is the first time father and son face each other in a pitching duel?

I'm pretty sure the Maddux brothers faced each once, and know the Perry brothers faced each several times.
There have been lots of others over the years.

i believe the Forsch brothers pitched against each other and as long as the Niekro brothers were in MLB wouldn't be shocked to see them face each other at least once.

In 1999 we saw live at Tropicana Field the only game ever started by two Estebans - Yan for TB, Loaiza for Texas.

Same last name?

That would be very common...Johnson, Smith, Lee, Jones ..not to mention brothers squaring off as forementioned...Reuschel, Forsch, Perry Niekro etc

Good call Railbird.

Assuming 100 dollar bets on David Wells every time he started at home you would be -810.And on the road +290.Give or take a little here or there for better prices.

Looked a little closer and believe taking Rail's advice would yield roughly a 47% roi.Not bad
