Was -2.5

In 2002 the Jets had the 22nd ranked offense and 24th ranked defense. I don't see anything to make me think the Jets will be any better but see a lot to make me think they will be worse. The Jets started off 1-3 in 2002 with Testeverde. Testeverde will soon be 40 and his best years are gone. Curtis Martin is the only player close to pro bowl caliber on offense and his best years are also behind him. The DL is the the strongest unit on the Jets and they are forced to start a rookie Robertson who got tons up pub prior to the draft because of his combine workout. We'll see just how productive he is on the field. The LB's are banged up and aging. The best players on the Jets are now on Washington in Coles, Thomas, Morton and Hall.
Last year Spurrier treated the preseason as though it were the regular season and gave false hopes to Redskin fans. This year it seems that Spurrier is saving something for the real games. The OL is strong with two of the best T's in the league in Jansen in Samuels and two strong G's. Ramsey in now in his 2nd year and should be better. Washington was ranked 5th overall in defense in 2002. There are big questions on the DL but the LB's and DB's are strong with guys such as Arrington, Trotter, Armstead, Bailey and Smoot.
If Pennington weren't hurt I'd look at this game differently. Without Pennington I don't see how the Jets win this one. GLTA

TB +3

Normally I like to against the Super Bowl Champs early in the season because I feel that the lines are inflated but not in this case. I think Phil is a strong team. They have one of the best OL in the league. Last year they didn't miss a beat when McNabb was hurt and may have actually played better going 5-1 w/o him. The have decent recs in Thrash, Pinkston and Mitchell and RB's in Staley and Buckhalter. The DB's are very strong but I think there's a dropoff on the DL and LB this year. Hugh Douglas and his 12.5 sacks left and they are weak at MLB. Emmons is also banged up with an ankle sprain.
TB had the #1 ranked defense in 2002 and everyone except Dexter Jackson returns. On offense I think that TB will be better this year now that Gruden and Johnson are in their second year together. The WR's are strong in Johnson, McCardell, and Jurevicius. This is basically the same team that won last year except that the offense looks better.

Car -3.5

Car was ranked #2 in defense last year behind TB. This unit is stingy against the run and puts lots of pressure on the QB leading the NFL in sacks. Stephen Davis joined Car to improve the running game.
Jax ranked 25th in offens in 2002 and they can't figure out which one the QB's that they want playing this year. As usual Fred Taylor is banged up.
I think that Car will be a big public play and can see the line moving up to 6 by game time.

Gotta agree with your TB pick. Better defense and their offense should be better this year too and it was very good at the end of the year last year when Johnson played. GL

Thanks. Good to see you're one Tampa Bay and the Panthers as well, looks like Tampa and the Eagles will both be forces to be reconned with this year, but you gotta take the points with the superbowl champs. And now that their offense has begun to run on all cylinders watch out. sorry in advance if I jinx your bets.

GL raiders.

Maybe good news for you - I think I'm liking the Jets. Specifically I am taking issue with the statement you made about how spurrier was holding back something for the regular season.

I think he was putrid in preseason and that can't bode well for the confindence of his team. I don't know if the ravens are just that bad or if they just played the scab team but 24-3 seems fishy to me.

I had trouble last year believing pennington was the next Joe Montana and though I agree with you about Vinny being washed up - I think that this may be his last chance ever and he knows it.

I wouldnt be suprised if Vinny can manage this team into a win here. Just my 2 cents.

GL anyway

Line now Skins -3. Big question is how well Vinny will operate now 3rd year Off. Co. Paul Hackett's west coast offense. 2nd big question is how well will Patrick Ramsey perform in Spurrier's vertical offense. With only 5 NFL starts under his belt, Ramsey is a ?. The Jets are looking to knock Laveranues Coles on his ass, but can they? I like Herman Edwards to have his aging team ready, unlike last year when the Jets started miserably. Seeing as this is week one I don't think depth problems on the Jets OL will be a factor, if they can contain ex Jet Chad Morton on special teams they have an excellent chance to win this game on the field. I know there are a lot of question marks in this post, but IMHO no way the Skins should be giving 3 to the Jets.

Wil and ATX- I just don't see much talent on the NYJ. Vinny is not made for the west coast offense like Pennington. I see a lot more talent on Washington. No matter what happens it's nice to have football starting. Have a great season guys

Thanks for the weather Fish. I'm not sure which team will benefit from the rain. I'm glad that it's not going to be windy.
