LoL.

I have no idea what those weeds are. I've searched before and couldn't figure out what the the weeds were. Plus Im confident I am going to find the right answer here.

I've actually cut down on OT help me threads since becoming a mod. I was kind of infamous for them before. 75k users, there is someone that knows something about everything. Particularly with a subject this general that I am sure many people have experience with.

I think Barturd is a yard man if I'm not mistaken. He may know how to get rid of your weed.

I had the same issue when we built our house and had a new lawn. Best thing to do is get a lawn company, not to cut it but to handle the fertilizing. They will come by 5-6 times a season to put down different treatments. It is cheaper than doing it yourself and they know what to put on and when to put it on.

I hate grass. It's a boring plant, and you constantly have to cut it and pull weeds so you don't piss off your neighbors.

Last summer, I got rid of my lawn and put in a low-maintenance garden. No more weeds, fertilizer, chemicals, lawnmowers, grass-stained shoes and socks, etc. Instead, I sit in the garden with a beverage and watch the lawn-obsessed neighbors fight dandelions and crabgrass.

No offense but those lawns are very healthy as they do have a very positive enviromental purpose while the desert landscapes do nothing to eliminate the carbon dioxide produced by all the auto exhausts, etc. That's the main reason I love green States like Oregon and am planing on moving back there.

Well what weeds are you trying to figure out?
I have 3 college degrees: golf turf maintenance, commercial turf maintenance and landscape management.

It not exactly easy to tell from pics on the internet and while not looking directly at the plant but the one looks like typical white clover (trifolium repens) It tends to grow best in wet soils with low nitrogen. So there is a chance you are over watering your yard for starters. white clover usually flowers from may to about september which is probably why youre seeing alot more of it lately. As far as a chemical application, you'll probably want something that contains 2-4D (Dimethylamine salt of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) an example of a brand name would be Trimec Classic herbicide. Basically what you're really looking for is a herbicide that kills broadleaf weeds. What kind of grass do you have in your yard?

the other weed looks like some type of thistle. Bull Thistle, spiny sowthistle. doesn't really matter. same rules apply. broadleaf weed killer. just make sure whatever you use isn't going to harm your desirable grass. I'm guessing you have some type of bluegrass, fescue or a ryegrass.
On top of that maybe cut back the water and apply a nitrogen fertilizer. The more dense the turf the less likely weeds will take over.

Easy... thanks man, I am sure ill be harassing you until I solve the problem..

thing is, I dont water my yard.... I have no idea the grass. Didn't lay the seed.

Cannot imagine its normal for "new grass" a year old to be this ran over by weeds....

thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge

That's why I always buy sod. I don't know of anyone around here that ever uses seed. Hell, even the new construction lays out sod.

That's what happens when companies use cheap seed on people's lawns. The weed in your pic is a "thistle" type of weed. Try using weedbgon as it is just iron and works well. Stay away from the harsh chemicals. WeedBGon is basically iron which kills dandelions and other types of weed down to the root.

Well i see you're in virginia so I'm guessing more then likely you have some type of fescue. It doesn't really matter. If you get something with the 2-4D in it it can harm st augustine and centipedegrass but you don't have either of those. Truth is i order products that the common homeowner can't really purchase. The stuff i get is generally in alot higher concentrate. But you should be able to find something at the local home depot that contains the same chemical. it just won't be as high of a percentage and wont have the same brand name as the stuff i get for the golf course. Still basically you're looking for a broadleaf weed killer. 2-4D is a common broadleaf weed killer, or something containing MCPP (methylchlorophenoxypropionic acid.) I did a quick search of home depot and it looks like they sell some stuff called compare n save that has 2-4D in it. I'm guessing what happened in your case is since you seeded the yard instead of sodding the weeds got a chance to germinate because of the lack of a plush stand of turfgrass. If you keep after it with the chemical applications and apply a nitrogen ferilizer every so often you should start to see the grass take ove the weeds fairly soon. By far the #1 way to control weeds is to have good turf density. The downside i guess is if you fertilize on a regular basis you'll be mowing the lawn more often. See I actually put stuff on my yard that slows down the growth of the grass because i hate mowing my lawn. But again, homeowners can't really buy plant growth regulators either.

What did you study? what degree are you getting? I graduated back in 1999. Been working on golf courses pretty much ever since. Funny thing is my lawn isnt the worst on the block but it certainly isnt the best either. I just dont care about it after spending 8 to 10 hours a day taking care of 140 acres of alot more manicured turf at the golf course. We are mowing our greens right now at .105. Basically just over a tenth of an inch which is pretty damn low. The last thing i want to do is come home and take care of my lawn.

For the price of hydro seed vs sod , no doubt sod is they way to go
