JEFF BENTON
Wednesday night's Game 1 of the World Series is on the Under
We’ve got two red-hot pitchers going in this one, as Boston’s Josh Beckett (3-0, 1.17 ERA in the playoffs) and Colorado’s Jeff Francis (2-0, 2.13 ERA) have been lights out in October. One of the reasons both have been so successful is they’ve been throwing strikes. In fact, in five starts between the two hurlers, they have given up a combined four walks while notching 38 strikeouts!
Not only are those some impressive numbers, but both pitchers should have the advantage over the hitters for two completely different reasons. See, Colorado has been off for eight days, and although the Rocks have been working out and playing simulated games, you have to believe their timing will be off, especially facing a pitcher the quality of Beckett. As for the Red Sox, I expect a little bit of fatigue to set in after that grueling series against the Indians where Boston was required to win three straight games just to get here. And with Francis being a crafty southpaw, it’ll probably take a time or two through the lineup for the Sox hitters to adjust.
Finally, both teams are extremely strong defensively – the Rockies committed fewer errors than any team in baseball – and both bullpens have been awesome in these playoffs. Throw in the chilly northeast nighttime weather and what are sure to be Game 1 jitters, and this one should stay well under the posted total.
