Here are tonights selections:
7 Units Detriot Pistons -6 -101
Third straight road game for Boston, and the defense has been slipping on this trip, allowing 91 and 97 points the last two games. The Pistons have an edge in the frontcourt with Big Ben Wallace, but this is a game where the re-emrgence of Vin Baker will help the Celtics -- if he shows up, as it's still early in the season. He's off to a good start -- averaging 15.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists following an offseason of reconditioning. The Pistons have picked it up defensively under new coach Larry Brown, and the Celtics are playing good 'D' under Jim O'Brien -- both teams hold opponents to 40% shooting. The Celtics wilted in the fourth quarter of the last game, getting outscored 17-11 in the fourth of a 97-90 loss at New Orleans. Take the Pistons!!!
5 Units Phoenix Suns OVER 180 -107
Two teams that have been playing very well. Phoenix is 1-2, but they're 2-1 ATS having covered in losses to the Spurs and Lakers. The Suns have a strong frontcourt (Shawn Marion, Amare Stoudamire and center Jake Voskuhl) to compliment a terrific backcourt of Penny Hardaway and Stephon Marbury. So why are they shooting just 40%??? That's what can happen when you play two of three games against the teams that have won the last five NBA titles! Utah has been playing well with a cast of unknowns for coach Jerry Sloan. This team likes to run and gun, scoring 99, 102, and 93 points in three games, so the offense is in fine form. All three Utah games have gone OVER the total and with all the offensive talent on tap, it could be another run and gun battle!!!
3 Units Washington Wizards +7 -108
There's nothing wrong with the Dallas offense, as usual. They're averaging 104 points while shooting 46% as a team, and they can even hit freebies (83% from the line). However, the defense (as usual) is suspect (97 ppg allowed) which explains the poor 1-3 ATS record. Washington (1-2 SU, 2-1 ATS) has been playing good defense under first-year coach Eddie Jordan. However, they lack experience and height, and that hurt the last game, a 98-85 home loss to New Jersey. And Dallas is similar to the Nets (only better) with a lot of height, depth and athletic ability. Looking for the Wizards to stay within the number tonight!!!
Good luck tonight my friends
