the mourning over the end of the summer resort means and the onset of fairplex begins today. one week to go....

r1: hesmallbutmighty. normally loathe these droppers, but this guy is just plain better than this group.

that was a rather poor way to begin. hesmallbutmighty is finished as a racehorse on this circuit. showed nothing on the mega-drop after a good drill. au revoir.

r2: cole rocks. the favored entry is clearly the one to beat, but do like the way cole rocks ran last time in his debut, kind of just cruising around the track one-paced after breaking slowly. this is often a good indicator that the horse will take to routing and julio does exceptionally well with 2nd time starters. a note on second choice seany's courage- the time to bet this guy was in his debut at 11 to 1 as he ran very well and got into some minor trouble late. now, however, in his second out at 2/1, i want no part of him.

seany's courage ran poorly, but so did cole rocks...

r3: helmsgold. 'gold has been a bit of a favorite of mine and has two good races under hre belt sprinting, both over this oval. the rail is no bargain but if she gets the trip, she's going to be tough and her price will be better than velvety smooth, the last filly to vanquish her.

well, today is going about as well as a swift kick in the nuts.

r4: i don't know much, but i do know you're supposed to chuck burnt, who has enjoyed plenty of chances alrady and burnt enough money to make her name more than appropriate. i am going to take a swing with impossible longshot sure nice, who i have a soft spot for as i made a killing betting her sire, Surachai, who was a quite useful cal-bred sprinter and damn near upset the shoemaker mile at 35/1.

burnt up the track at 6/5. now if i can only narrow in on who IS going to run well, i may be on to something....

r5: eileen's violet. dollase import ran against a fairly salty bunch down the hill in march at santa anita and i look for her to run a bit better off the break. love the outside draw, the fact that espinoza stick with her and most of all the 20/1 price.

r7: warren's lady slew. for some reason i'm just sold on streamin' heat, who ran her heart out holding on in the CTBA stakes early in the meet. i used her, ten churros and warren's lady slew, who i will be betting to win, in the p-4, as my p/6 went up in flames in the first leg. 'slew looked very impressive downing a weak bunch, but goes to a very sharp (cheating?) trainer off the claim.

hmn. i seem to have no trouble today indentifying the false favorites, but no luck with picking straight up winners. not sure what the hell gomez was doing sending 'slew from the rail after she couldn't make the lead against claimers, but what do i know?

i am, however, alive in the p/4 to the 4,6,8,10,11, who can salvage what is otherwise a pathetic effort today.

r8: chief poniso. mcanally has been mired in a years long slump, but his numbers with second timers is outstanding, and this guy got a useful education in his first race last month. here's hoping my longest price in the p/4 comes in.
