KEY STAT: Only one of Bologna’s last nine home Serie A matches featured more than two goals

EXPERT VERDICT: Bologna have scored just five goals in their last eight Serie A home matches and Sampdoria are not without hope despite recent defeats against Roma and Milan. Colombian striker Luis Muriel has looked lively this season and can add to his tally of two goals from four matches.

RECOMMENDATION: L Muriel first goalscorer

KEY STAT: Monaco have won their last seven matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Nice are unbeaten in their opening five Ligue 1 games, but leaders Monaco are flying and could make a strong title push this season. Nice have signed Mario Balotelli, but Monaco midfielder Bernardo Silva was superb in their Champions League win over Tottenham and is a big price to find the net

RECOMMENDATION: B Silva first goalscorer

KEY STAT: Real Madrid have won their last 16 games in La Liga

EXPERT VERDICT: Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid left it very late to see off Sporting in the Champions League last week but Sunday’s victory over Espanyol was a club-record 16th straight league win. Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, who were not fit enough for the weekend trip, could return against a Villarreal side who have conceded only twice in four games and a narrow Real win looks likely.

RECOMMENDATION: Real Madrid to win 2-1

KEY STAT: Six of the seven goals in Hertha Berlin’s games this season have come in the final 30 minutes

EXPERT VERDICT: Hertha Berlin took just two points from their last seven matches in 2015-16 but they have won their first three Bundesliga games this term. Bayern Munich, their hosts on Wednesday, also have a 100 per cent record although they may have to be patient against Hertha and the Draw-Bayern double result could land for the third consecutive league game.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw-Bayern double result

KEY STAT: Only one of Cagliari’s seven league goals this season has come before half-time

EXPERT VERDICT: Juventus have had a frustrating few days with a Champions League stalemate against Seville followed by defeat to Inter in the Derby d’Italia. There is no reason for Juve fans to panic - their side won only three of their first ten league games last season but still hacked up in the title race - but they are clearly not in top gear after a significant summer squad overhaul.

RECOMMENDATION: Juventus to win 1-0

KEY STAT: Atletico Madrid have scored in five of their last six clashes with Barcelona

EXPERT VERDICT: Barcelona have responded to their shock home defeat to Alaves by crushing Celtic 7-0 and Leganes 5-1 with ten of the 12 goals coming from star men Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar. Atletico Madrid are also in fine goalscoring form, however, rattling in nine goals in wins over Celta Vigo and Sporting Gijon, and they have the talent to breach Barca’s defence once again.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

Preview: Mercury (16-18) at Fever (17-17)

Date: September 21, 2016 6:00 PM EDT

Two teams that didn't live up to preseason hype square off Wednesday, when Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury visit the Indiana Fever for a win-or-go-home, first-round playoff battle at Bankers Life Fieldhouse that could mark the final game of veteran star Tamika Catchings.

One of the WNBA's all-time greats, Catchings has announced that she will retire when the Fever's season ends, which could be Wednesday.

The first two rounds of this season's playoffs are single-elimination, so there is no tomorrow for Wednesday's loser. The winner advances to the second round and will face either the New York Liberty or the Chicago Sky on the road.

The Fever, after reaching last year's WNBA Finals, were expected to be among the top-tier of contenders again this season. But Indiana (17-17) struggled with inconsistency, especially on the offensive end and didn't secure home court in the first round of the playoffs until an 83-60 win over the Dallas Wings in their regular season finale.

Indiana is 11th in the league in scoring, averaging 80.5 points per game, and last in the league in rebounding.

The Mercury (16-18) also experienced a disappointing regular season. With Taurasi returning from a one-year hiatus to join with Brittney Griner and Penny Taylor, Phoenix was expected to be a top-tier contender. Instead, the Mercury barely got into the playoffs, winning three of their last four to secure the eighth seed.

Their struggles, for the most part, haven't come on the offensive end of the court. Taurasi leads five Mercury players averaging in double figures at 17.8 points per game. She scored 19 points in Phoenix's 79-65 win at Indiana on Aug. 31, the teams' most recent meeting.

Indiana won two of three overall against Phoenix this season, but will have their hands full with Griner, who has emerged as the league's premier shot-blocker. Her 107 blocks led the WNBA this season and were 28 more than second-place Elizabeth Williams of the Atlanta Dream.

Preview: Storm (16-18) at Dream (17-17)

Date: September 21, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

The Atlanta Dream will be short-handed on Wednesday when they tip off the WNBA playoffs against the Seattle Storm at Georgia Tech's McCamish Pavilion.

Atlanta forward Tiffany Hayes will miss Wednesday's contest, serving a one-game suspension after picking up her seventh technical foul in the regular-season finale against Minnesota. Hayes is second on the team in scoring, averaging 15.0 points.

The Dream also could be without starting forward Sancho Lyttle, who is battling a foot sprain. Lyttle is second on the team in rebounding.

While the Dream are ailing, Seattle is surging. The Storm finished the regular season with wins in five or their last six games, including a 91-82 victory over the Dream in Atlanta on Sept. 4. Veteran guard Sue Bird and rookie star Breanna Stewart each had 23 points in that contest.

Dream coach Michael Cooper said the Storm caught his team off-guard with their tempo in the last meeting.

"They play half-court basketball, but the last time we played they were up-tempo and I think that suits them," Cooper told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "Sue Bird is an older player now, but if she has those sprite legs, we're going to have to run. We're going to look to pick it up for 40 minutes."

Bird has been her normal steady self, averaging 12.9 points and 5.8 assists, but Stewart is Seattle's primary catalyst. The leading Rookie of the Year candidate, Stewart leads Seattle in average scoring (18.3 points), rebounds (9.3) and blocks (64).

Seattle won two of three meetings overall with the Dream this season.

The first two rounds of this season's playoffs are single-elimination, so there is no tomorrow for the loser. The winner advances to the second round and will face either the New York Liberty or Chicago Sky on the road.

"As a lower-seeded team, it's exciting that it's just one game in the playoffs," Bird told the Seattle Times. "As a higher-seeded team, you're not thrilled about that. ... We're in a good spot. We're playing and when you're in a situation like this, anything is possible."

At the Gate - Wednesday
By Mike Dempsey

A field of 12 was entered for Saturday’s $1.25 million Pennsylvania Derby (G2) at Parx Racing including Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Nyquist and Preakness (G1) and Haskell invitational (G1) winner Exaggerator.

The 12-race card at Parx Racing on Saturday also includes the $1 million Cotillion (G1) which drew a field of six three-year-old fillies including the undefeated Songbird.

Many of you know I am no fan of Parx Racing. The track has purses that are infused by slot machines, yet they have a larcenous 30% takeout on trifecta bets, the second highest number in the U.S.

The second leading trainer at the current meeting is Ramon Preciado, who is training while he appeals a 270-day suspension handed down for two clenbuterol overages at Parx last fall.

Preciado’s lawyer filed a lawsuit against the track seeking damages for the harm done to his business after Parx ejected him from the grounds and refused to accept entries from him.

Parx buckled and decided to let him enter horses again, and here he is winning at a 21% clip at the meeting.

I will handicap the stakes but have no intention of using any of my wagering bankroll to support Parx.

Nyquist was installed as the 5-2 morning line favorite, making his first start since a disappointing fourth place finish in the Haskell in the slop on July 31. He was third in the Preakness two back, his first loss after starting his career by winning his first eight starts.

Exaggerator (9-2) faded to finish a well beaten 11th in the Travers (G1) in his last start and is not going to get an off track he seems to relish so much.

Among the other top contenders are West Virginia Derby (G2) winner Cupid (5-1) and Travers third place finisher Gun Runner (6-1).

Songbird puts her undefeated record on the line in the Cotillion and faces a tough filly in Cathryn Sophia (5-2), who won the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and in her most recent start won the Princess of Sylmar over the Parx main track.

Carina Mia (5-1) is no slouch, the winner of the Acorn (G1) back in June. She has lost her last two starts, running second to Songbird in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) and was third in the Ballerina (G1) in her most recent outing.

Here is the opening race from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Md $25,000 (1:30 ET)
#2 Muselet 3-1
#3 Bellamy Torch 5-1
#6 Bow Town Cat 9-5
#1 Dean's Ticket 5-2

Analysis: Muselet is a $29,000 Keeneland purchase making her debut for the Violette barn that is 26% winners (with a +ROI) with first time starters. The filly is by Flatter (11% winners with debut runners) out of an Unbridled mare that has dropped four foals to race, three winners, top earner stakes winner Gamay Noir ($346,866).

Bellamy Touch cuts back to a sprint and returns to the main track here after fading to finish a well beaten 11th last out going long on turf against $40,000 foes. His lone start on dirt came in his debut going a route. Pedigree wise he seems more suited to dirt. Mott is 20% winners (with a +ROI) moving runners from route to sprint. He faces softer here dropping in for a $25,000 tag.

Wagering
WIN: #2 to win at 5-2 or better.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 7 Alw $62,000N1X (4:41 ET)
#6 Heated Verdict 5-2
#4 Bajan Summer 4-1
#8 Excluded 7-2
#3 Gaming 8-1

Analysis: Heated Verdict was bumped and squeezed back coming out of the gate, tracked the early pace and finished evenly in a third place finish last out at this level in his first start off a 10-month layoff. The winner Grand Sky came back to beat state bred Alw-2 optional claimers in his next outing on Sept. 9 here. The gelding broke his maiden at the Spa last summer and then tired stakes company in his first two starts against winners. The Weaver barn is off to a good start at the meeting and is 18% winners (with a +ROI) with runners making their second start off a +180-day layoff.

Bajan Summer stalked the early pace and made a mild late bid before hanging late to finish fourth last out at this level. The runner up Grand Sky returned to win his next two starts. The Sciacca barn claimed this guy for $14,000 last fall and since he has come up short at this condition in his last six starts but has earned numbers that make him a contender against this weak looking group of state breds.

# 5 SMOKEYS LUCK 5/2
# 2 ST PETE STAR 4/1
# 4 AMERICAN TOWER 7/2

SMOKEYS LUCK looks formidable to best this bunch. Take a look at this nice horse's avg speed rating of 77 and compare to today's class rating. Looks like a formidable wager. Good for a win wager just off the amazing prior class figures. Have to like this solid standardbred. Many race players will recognize the great TrackMaster Speed Rating in the last race. Stacks up against any horse in this group of animals. ST PETE STAR - A respectable play in here as he has one of the highest winning clips in the field of horses as well as tremendous credentials all around. A formidable win percent has been achieved by race horses starting from the 2 hole. AMERICAN TOWER - He's racing in good form, recording very strong TrackMaster Speed Ratings. An excellent pick. Always terrific driver/trainer combination. 20 percent winners when they team up to do work.

# 4 BET THE MOON 2/1
# 3 LETTUCEROCKU A 5/2
# 1 JUST PLAIN LUCK 9/2

BET THE MOON appears to be our best wagering option in this race. Been doing work with some tougher customers of late, has a distinct class edge. (Average Rating 89). Loved this horse's last race. Ran a strong 86 speed rating. Major player. When the starter calls, nice horses beginning out of the 4 post have more wins than you would expect. LETTUCEROCKU A - He has been squaring off solidly and the speed figures are among the most competitive in the group of horses. Good for a win wager just off the exemplary prior class numbers. Have to like this race horse. JUST PLAIN LUCK - With Napolitano in the sulky, watch out for this solid standardbred to get the triumph. Pace figures fit the bias well here at Harrah's Philadelphia, look for this one to get the top prize.

# 3 CHOOSE THIS DANCE 4/1

# 1 TOUCH OF RUN 3/2

# 4 INDY SLIPPERS 4/1

CHOOSE THIS DANCE looks very good to best this field. Has put up solid Equibase Speed Figures in dirt sprint races in the past. Displays the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 57 Equibase speed fig which is one of the best in this field. Had one of the strongest speed figures of this group in her last contest. TOUCH OF RUN - Must be given consideration here on the basis of the figures in the speed realm alone. Mouton has her trained very well to break quickly out of the gate. INDY SLIPPERS - Johnson and Guzman have a strong win percent together.

# 7 SILENT AUCTION 4/1

# 2 CANNA RED 6/1

# 1 SIMPLE AS THAT 5/2

I've got to go with SILENT AUCTION. Will more than likely be one of the leaders of the group going into the halfway point of the affair. Should definitely be given consideration here if only for the competitive speed figure put up in the last race. CANNA RED - The Equibase Speed Figure of 75 from her most recent race looks very strong in here. Has run soundly when racing a dirt sprint race. SIMPLE AS THAT - Has been running admirably and has among the most favorable speed in the race for today's distance. Must be in good condition if the handler is bringing her back so quickly.

Rating:

#7 WILBURN'S PRINCESS (ML=6/1)
#1 SHE KANT MISS (ML=5/2)
#8 CAJOLERY (ML=4/1)
#5 SILLY FACE (ML=7/2)

WILBURN'S PRINCESS - Carrying 7 pounds less this race. Trainer has her in a good spot. SHE KANT MISS - A thoroughbred coming back this soon after a good effort is a good sign. CAJOLERY - I really like that most recent race on Sep 5th at Timonium where she finished third. This filly usually does her best running late. Look for her back of the pack early in the race and cruising down the homestretch on the tiring speed horses. Recent Equibase speed figures show dominant pattern of improvement. SILLY FACE - Earnings per race entered is something that I think can be a very important handicapping aspect. This racer is ranked at the very top in this bunch.

Vulnerable Contenders: No Vulnerable Contenders in this race,

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - WILBURN'S PRINCESS - This filly's superior last speed number of 71, against these thoroughbreds, makes her the overwhelming choice.

#8 A NEW ANGEL (ML=4/1)
#6 SINCERE DEVOTION (ML=7/2)

A NEW ANGEL - I like to play this angle, a racer coming back off a good effort within the last 30 days. Getting a break of 6 pounds from last race at Presque Isle Downs. She should make the most of this advantage. SINCERE DEVOTION - Feliciano brings her back again. I recommend you stay with this strong filly. Based on workouts, I look for this filly to run a big race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 LUNAR HEAT (ML=5/1), #4 PENELOPES BEST (ML=6/1), #5 SCREAMING BACK (ML=8/1),

LUNAR HEAT - The finish of seventh in the last affair shows me that this equine may be going off form. PENELOPES BEST - Doesn't seem to be in a comfortable situation in today's event. SCREAMING BACK - Finished third in his most recent effort with a common speed rating. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this group.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - A NEW ANGEL - I would presume that this thoroughbred should sit in the 'garden' spot, then this filly should be rolling down the lane and romp to victory.

September Pitchers Report
By Marc Lawrence

Much like our waistlines after a tasty Labor Day barbeque, MLB rosters have expanded to accommodate September, the final month of the season. And as College Football and the NFL crash onto the scene, MLB pitchers take the final spotlight in hopes of leading their teams on to the playoff trail.

The question is which ones can we count on and which ones figure to be candidates for offseason Weight Watchers meetings?

Check it out.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of September. On the flip side, we’ve also listed pitchers that struggle in September team starts, winning 33% percent or less of their efforts.

To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each September over the last three years.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s September’s list.

Enjoy the games.

GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

Arrieta, Jake - 12-2 (8-1 H)

For nearly two full seasons, Arrieta has been as good as it gets in baseball as a starting pitcher. While strikeouts have been down a bit and walks are up of late, at this time it hard to find fault with a hurler who has opposing batters hitting below .200 against him and has a 2.84 ERA to start the month.

Cole, Gerrit - 14-3 (6-0 H)

The Pittsburgh ace has frankly had a mediocre injury-plagued season and on August 27th had an MRI on his elbow, which revealed no damage. If Pirates the are going to snare a third consecutive Wild Card bid, they will need the Cole of the past two years. Note: Cole’s record also represents his MLB career team start mark during the month of September.

*Grenike, Zack - 13-3 (7-1 H)

Greinke's ERA is higher than past year's but pitching in thinner air of Arizona has contributed to this. While the Diamondbacks have little too play for, expect Grienke to be tough as nails like usual.

Hamels, Cole - 12-5 (6-2 H)

Need a big game pitched in September? It’s hard to go wrong with Hamels, whose ERA of 2.91 is well below career mark of 3.26. Still owns lively fastball and changeup is knee-buckling. A true professional.

*Jimenez, Ubaldo - 12-1 (6-0 H)

Still toeing the rubber every five days or for Baltimore in spite of mid-sixes ERA. Baltimore has few options and Jimenez is not trustworthy in the bullpen either. Orioles need big month from their big man to reach the playoffs and this is his best month.

*Kershaw, Clayton - 12-3 (6-1 A)

Kershaw threw in simulated game on August 30 and later said "feeling really good" and if all goes well, the Dodgers hope Kershaw can pitch in September and beyond in some role, which only makes the Dodgers a bigger threat. Best pitcher in baseball.

Kluber, Corey - 10-3 (5-1 A)

Has been back to Cy Young form since the All-Star break with an ERA under 2.00 and Cleveland has won his last six outings. When he commands both sides of dish with fastball, for whatever reason, his curveball has more break. A true established ace for the Tribe trying to win the division.

Koehler, Tom - 10-5 (5-1 A)

Been very effective in a quiet way nationally, but has been extremely dependable for two months leading to this month for Miami, supplying six to seven solid innings per start. If he's throwing strikes inside to batters, he’s tough to hit. Note: Koehler’s record also represents his MLB career team start mark during the month of September.

Peavy, Jake - 11-3 (5-1 H)

Went on DL in late August with lower back strain. Had been working out of bullpen most of August and future status with San Francisco is as cloudy as the weather in the Bay.

*Price, David - 12-5 (7-2 H)

After a largely below season in Boston, Price has been much sharper in latter stages of August, which is what the Red Sox need. What has changed is Price became more effective in keeping the ball lower and is getting more fly ball outs as a power pitcher, which are genuinely more routine.

*Scherzer, Max - 11-4 (6-3 H)

After a somewhat slow start, Scherzer has been getting better and better and base hits allowed are well below innings pitched (128 vs. 190), yet walking few batters (45), especially compared to strikeouts (238). Back to pacing around mound like the king of the jungle.

*Shields, James - 13-4 (8-0 A)

It has been a wild ride for Shields this season, with numerous hideous outings blended in with several sharp ones. At this stage, hard to think the 34-year righty can duplicate the past seasons.

Strasburg, Stephen- 9-4 (5-1 A)

Starts the month on the DL after some very ugly starts last month. If Washington is to do anything in the postseason, Strasburg needs to regain early season form, which features moving fastball and big breaking curve.

*Zimmermann, Jordan - 11-4 (6-2 A)

If rehab assignments go well, September 10th is target date for return. Zimmermann has not been very effective for quite some time and easy to forget he had ERA of 2.45 in mid-May, compared to current 4.44.

BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

*Hellickson, Jeremy - 2-10 (1-5 H)

All things considered, Hellickson has not had a bad year in Philadelphia. However, upon closer inspection, most of his numbers are now near career norms and if that ends being the same this month, real bet against potential.

Leake, Mike - 5-10 (1-7 A)

The Cardinals right-hander has been a lot like his teams, when Leake has been good, he and St. Louis have generally won, when not they have too often lost badly. Cards are hoping not to see a repeat performance from the veteran.

Ross, Tyson - 3-11 (1-6 A)

Started on Opening Day and has not been seen since for San Diego with bum shoulder. Still trying to work way bad through rehab. Probably best to forget 2016.

*Sale, Chris - 2-12 (0-8 A)

It is almost unimaginable Sale could have a record like this in September, yet he does. Part of it is the White Sox offense is too unreliable and Sale's miscues end up being quite costly. Let's see what the final month brings for the big lefty.

MLB roundup: Giants, Cardinals, Mets tied in wild card
By The Sports Xchange

LOS ANGELES -- Solo home runs by Eduardo Nunez in the fifth inning and Brandon Belt in the ninth held up as the San Francisco Giants defeated Los Angeles 2-0 on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.
San Francisco snapped a three-game losing streak, but it came with a price. Winning pitcher Johnny Cueto (17-5) left the game in the sixth inning with a groin strain, while standout shortstop Brandon Crawford is out with a fractured left pinky.
Cueto is listed as day-to-day, while there's not yet a timetable for Crawford.
The Giants (80-71) pulled into a three-way tie with St. Louis and the New York Mets for the two National League wild-card spots, and trail the Dodgers by five games in the West.

Cardinals 10, Rockies 5
DENVER -- Adam Wainwright earned the victory and recorded a career-high four RBIs to help St. Louis rout Colorado at Coors Field.
St. Louis are tied with the New York Mets for the top wild-card spot in the National League. San Francisco was a half-game back pending the outcome of their late game with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Wainwright (12-9) worked 5 1/3 innings, the third time in four starts he failed to reach the sixth. He improved to 9-1 with a 1.70 ERA in 14 games (10 starts) versus the Rockies, 3-0, 2.73 in five games (four starts) in Denver.

Braves 5, Mets 4
NEW YORK -- Julio Teheran continued his mastery of New York as the right-hander allowed one run over seven strong innings to lead Atlanta to its second straight victory over the Mets.
The National League wild card-leading Mets (80-71) entered Tuesday with a one-game lead over the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals.
Teheran (6-10) allowed five hits and one walk while striking out one as his ERA against New York this season rose from 0.78 to 0.90. He is 7-3 with a 2.36 ERA in 15 career games (14 starts) versus the Mets.

Red Sox 5, Orioles 2
BALTIMORE -- David Ortiz got his 36th home run, a three-run shot in the seventh inning, and Boston extended its winning streak to six games with a victory over Baltimore at Camden Yards.
The Red Sox increased their lead over the Orioles to five games in the American League East. Baltimore lost three out of four, but still holds a narrow margin for one of the two wild-card spots.
Mookie Betts continued to pound Orioles' pitching and went 3-for-5 with two runs, while Jackie Bradley Jr. got his 26th homer.

Cubs 6, Reds 1
CHICAGO -- Jon Lester claimed his National League-leading 18th victory as Chicago beat Cincinnati at Wrigley Field.
Lester (18-4) allowed one run on six hits while striking out five and walking none in a seven-inning outing.
His 18 wins are the most since going 19-9 with the Red Sox in 2009.
Anthony Rizzo was 2-for-5 with three RBIs, Kris Bryant added three hits and Dexter Fowler reached base four times as the Cubs mounted a 11-hit attack.

Marlins 1, Nationals 0
MIAMI -- Jose Fernandez pitched eight scoreless innings, and Giancarlo Stanton hit a home run as Miami defeated Washington at Marlins Park.
The Nationals, till comfortably ahead in the NL East, lost four games in a row. The Marlins have been projected to have less than a one percent chance to make the playoffs as an NL wild-card team. They won three games in a row.
Fernandez struck out 12 and allowed just three hits and no walks. It was his ninth double-figure strikeout game of the season, and he retired 21 consecutive batters before running into trouble in the eighth.

Indians 2, Royals 1
CLEVELAND -- Brandon Guyer's pinch-hit double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Cleveland a victory over Kansas City at Progressive Field.
Andrew Miller pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to get the win. Brian Flynn took the loss.
The win reduced the Indians' magic number for winning the AL Central Division to six games.

Rangers 5, Angels 4
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Nomar Mazara added to his Rookie of the Year candidacy with his 20th home run to lead Texas past Los Angeles at Globe Life Park.
The American League-leading Rangers (90-62) took the first two games of the series and tied their high-water mark of the season at 28 games above .500. Texas' magic number to clinch the AL West was two games prior to the outcome of late games for Houston and Seattle.
Mazara leads all American League rookies in homers, RBIs, hits, runs and total bases. He's the fourth rookie in Texas franchise history to hit at least 20 home runs.

Blue Jays 10, Mariners 4
SEATTLE -- Toronto's J.A. Happ became baseball's second 20-game winner as the Blue Jays used an eight-run fourth inning to rout Seattle.
Happ (20-4) pitched five innings, allowing two runs and six hits while striking out eight, and got plenty of support as Toronto piled up 14 hits including four home runs.
The Blue Jays (83-68) moved into first place in the American League wild-card standings, one game ahead of Baltimore. Seattle (79-72) is three games behind the Orioles in the race for the second spot.

Tigers 8, Twins 1
MINNEAPOLIS -- Miguel Cabrera hit his 442nd career home run, and added a bit of drama with his legs, to back Matt Boyd's career-high eight innings as Detroit beat Minnesota at Target Field.
Boyd (6-4) bounced back from a disappointing loss at home to Minnesota last week by giving up three hits and one walk. He tied a career high with seven strikeouts.
Cabrera's 34th homer of the season was a two-run liner to left in the seventh inning to tie him with Dave Kingman for 41st in major league history. He also passed Joe DiMaggio for 48th all-time with 1,538 RBIs.

Astros 2, Athletics 1 (10 innings)
OAKLAND -- Tony Kemp hit a leadoff double in the 10th inning and scored the go-ahead run on George Springer's single as Houston prevailed at the Oakland Coliseum.
The Astros moved within two games of the second American League wild-card spot by defeating the Athletics for the sixth straight time.
Reliever Chris Devenski (4-4) pitched 3 2/3 innings perfect innings for the win, striking out four.

Yankees 5, Rays 3
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Gary Sanchez belted a three-run homer in a four-run seventh inning as New York rallied past Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field.
Sanchez's 17 home runs are the most by a Yankees rookie since Alfonso Soriano in 2001. They're also tied for the most home runs in a player's first 44 career games in the last century, equaling the Boston Braves' Wally Berger in 1930. He's hit home runs in three straight games and has six in his last 11 contests.
New York bounced back from a four-game sweep against Boston that had them losing seven of eight games. Tampa Bay had won four of six coming in with two victories apiece over American League East contenders Toronto and Baltimore.

Pirates 6, Brewers 3
MILWAUKEE -- Josh Bell and Jordy Mercer drove in two runs apiece and Pittsburgh beat Milwaukee at Miller Park.
Adam Frazier finished with three hits while Andrew McCutchen, Francisco Cervelli and Mercer recorded two each for the Pirates, who totaled 13.
Martin Maldonado and Hernan Perez recorded two hits apiece for Milwaukee.

Phillies 7, White Sox 6
PHILADELPHIA -- Odubel Herrera continued his stellar week as he went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, two stolen bases and three RBIs to power Philadelphia over Chicago at Citizens Bank Park.
Over his last seven games, Herrera is 15-for-28 with two home runs, four doubles and six RBIs.
Tommy Joseph went 2-for-3 with an RBI double as the Phillies' 2-3-4 hitters went a combined 7-for-11 with five runs scored and six RBIs.

Padres 5, Diamondbacks 2
SAN DIEGO -- Adam Rosales drove in four runs with a pair of sacrifice flies and a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the sixth inning to lead San Diego to a rain-delayed victory over Arizona.
Ryan Schimpf opened the sixth with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch as Alex Dickerson struck out. Rosales then hit a 360-foot liner into the left field stands off Zack Godley (4-4) to snap a 2-2 tie. The home run was Rosales 11th of the season and second in three games.
Paul Goldschmidt had two hits for the Diamondbacks, including a two-run, sixth-inning homer. Dickerson and Arizona's Yasmany Tomas each had two hits as the teams finished with four hits apiece.

Preview: Cardinals (80-71) at Rockies (72-79)

Game: 3
Venue: Coors Field
Date: September 21, 2016 3:10 PM EDT

DENVER -- The St. Louis Cardinals will send rookie Luke Weaver to the mound as they try to sweep their three-game series Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies.

Weaver, 23, is 1-3 with a 3.21 ERA in seven starts, the last on Friday at San Francisco, where he gave up five hits and six unearned runs in 2 2/3 innings and lost 8-2.

Weaver, who made his major league debut Aug. 13, will be pitching for the first time at Coors Field. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny emphatically said he would not talk to Weaver about the mile-high altitude, the spacious outfield or anything that might be lurking at hitter-friendly Coors Field.

"I'm not going to fill his mind, and I'm going to discourage anybody else from doing the same thing," Matheny said. "Just go do your thing, and we'll make adjustments as we need to and we'll try to keep an eye (out for) when something doesn't look right. But to kind of pre-set in his mind that he's going to have to do something different, I think, is a bad strategy."

The Cardinals have won four straight games and are tied with the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants in the race for the two National League wild-card spots. The Cardinals' spurt has made the scoreboard watching more riveting and, at Coors Field, more unavoidable.

"From where my angle is (in the dugout) and where the pitcher's head is, right behind it is the scoreboard," Matheny said, referring to the out-of-town scoreboard in right field. "I mean directly behind it, so you can't help but watch and to see what's going on with the other teams."

That said, after Tuesday night's 10-5 win over the Rockies, Matheny repeated the Cardinals' mantra when it comes to scoreboard watching.

"It's not something we run from. It's just not something we put too much focus on," Matheny said. "Control what we can control. Same boring stuff, but it keeps it very simple what our job description is."

Like the Cardinals, the Rockies are also starting a rookie in German Marquez, 21. He made his major league debut Sept. 8 and will be making his first major league start after three relief appearances. He's 0-3 with a 5.06 ERA in those three games, the last two scoreless for a combined three innings.

"I'm very excited I'm going to be a starter. That's unbelievable," Marquez said. "I want to help my team, too. That's why I'm here. I'm going to do it."

The Rockies acquired Marquez from Tampa Bay along with reliever Jake McGee in the Jan. 28 trade that sent outfielder Corey Dickerson and minor league third baseman Kevin Padlo to the Rays. Marquez said he was surprised to be traded, since the Rays had placed him on their 40-man roster for the first time two months before the deal.

Marquez was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Year after going 9-6 with a 2.85 ERA, 33 walks and 126 strikeouts in 135 2/3 innings for Double-A Hartford. He then went 2-0 with a 4.35 ERA in five starts for Triple-A Albuquerque before being recalled by the Rockies.

Marquez's repertoire includes a fastball, curveball and changeup. The first two pitches are above average and the third will be. Marquez's changeup was a point of emphasis this season, specifically to not slow his arm speed and keep it the same as his fastball while throwing his changeup.

"The thing that jumps out at you is its easy velocity -- upper 90s," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "There's not a lot of effort. He's got great finish (on the fastball). He's got a good breaking ball. The changeup is a work in progress right now, but it's coming. But for a 21-year-old kid -- very, very impressive."

In addition to his stuff, Marquez has impressed the Rockies with his mound presence.

"We saw that right away in spring training, unaffected by the major league atmosphere," Weiss said. "Always looked like he belonged. It says something for a kid his age, (coming to) a new organization, too. That's not easy.

"The few outings he's had here the last few weeks, same thing. Very composed. Very poised."
