GAME: Washington Nationals (63-42) at Miami Marlins (50-55)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, August 02 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Marlins Park, Miami, Florida
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Nationals at Marlins

Gracenote

Aug 2, 2017

The Washington Nationals were staring at what appeared to be a sure thing, leading by six runs with ace Matt Scherzer on the mound. That is, until Scherzer exited with neck spasms and the Nationals frittered away the lead, allowing the host Miami Marlins to rally for the victory and have a chance for a series win in Wednesday's rubber match.

Scherzer came out of the game for what was termed precautionary reasons, forcing Washington's bullpen to pitch seven innings with A.J. Cole set to make his first start since May. Howie Kendrick hit a two-run homer as part of a 5-for-5 night for the Nationals, who were blanked after scoring six runs in the second inning. Miami left fielder Marcell Ozuna had three htis and belted his second three-run homer in three games to rally his team to a 7-6 victory. The dramatic win came after learning that Opening Day starter Edinson Volquez, who threw a no-hitter in June, is facing Tommy John surgery.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MASN (Washington), FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH A.J. Cole (1-0, 1.50 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Vance Worley (0-2, 6.42)

Cole will be making his second start in the majors this season and first since May 6, when he allowed one run and six hits over six innings in a victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. The 25-year-old's numbers at Triple-A Syracuse were unimpressive -- he made 16 starts and posted a 4-4 record with a 5.66 ERA. Cole made two starts in September against Miami, allowing six runs and 10 hits in seven innings.

Worley returned to the rotation to make his first start in seven weeks versus Cincinnati on Friday and gave up three runs -- all in the first inning -- on four hits over four innings. It was the fifth start of the year for Worley and the longest was a five-inning stint against the Los Angeles Angels on May 27. He has made 10 appearances (four starts) against Washington, going 4-2 with a 3.29 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. Marlins SS JT Riddle has a torn labrum in his shoulder and will undergo season-ending surgery on Aug. 11.

2. Nationals CF Brian Goodwin is 5-for-15 during a four-game hitting streak.

3. Marlins RHP Brad Ziegler converted his first save opportunity of the year following the trade of closer AJ Ramos.

PREDICTION: Nationals 6, Marlins 4

GAME: Kansas City Royals (55-50) at Baltimore Orioles (52-54)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, August 02 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland

Preview: Royals at Orioles

Gracenote

Aug 2, 2017

The Kansas City Royals came into Baltimore with tons of momentum poised to make a run at first place in the American League Central, but they've suddenly hit a rough patch. The Royals will try to find some offense and avoid a sweep when they visit the Orioles for the finale of the three-game series on Wednesday.

Kansas City won 10 of 11 before coming to Baltimore and averaged 7.3 runs in that span, including a pair of 16-run explosions. The Royals are watching that offense disappear against an Orioles pitching staff that entered Tuesday ranked last in the AL with a 5.07 ERA, and they stand two games behind the first-place Cleveland Indians in the AL Central. Baltimore won its last four contests to move within two games of .500 and close within 3 1/2 games of the Royals for the second AL wild card spot, holding Kansas City to a total of three runs in the last two outings. The Orioles will try to keep the hot starts going when they welcome Jeremy Hellickson to the rotation on Wednesday while the Royals counter with All-Star lefty Jason Vargas.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, MASN 2 (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals LH Jason Vargas (13-4, 3.00 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Jeremy Hellickson (6-5, 4.73)

Vargas was lit up for six runs in 2 2/3 innings against Detroit in his first start after the All-Star break but was much better in his last two turns, allowing a total of three runs in 11 innings. The California native kept the ball in the park at Boston on Friday after surrendering six homers in his previous three turns. Vargas is seeing Baltimore for the first time this season and is 6-2 with a 3.35 ERA in nine road starts.

Hellickson is the kind of veteran the Orioles hope can stabilize the back end of the rotation, but he was smacked around for six runs and seven hits in five innings in his Philadelphia finale against Milwaukee on July 22. The 30-year-old surrendered 22 home runs in 112 1/3 innings for the Phillies, three shy of tying his career high. Hellickson is 3-2 with a 5.01 ERA in nine career games - eight starts - at Camden Yards.

WALK-OFFS

1. Royals INF Cheslor Cuthbert (wrist) began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday.

2. Baltimore 3B Manny Machado is 8-for-13 with five doubles in the last three games.

3. Kansas City 1B Eric Hosmer hit safely in the last seven games and is 14-for-30 in that span.

PREDICTION: Royals 5, Orioles 2

Preview: Reds at Pirates

Gracenote

Aug 2, 2017

The Cincinnati Reds haven't had much reason to smile during what has rapidly turned into a disastrous season, however, their dominance over the Pittsburgh Pirates is cause enough to celebrate. The cellar-dwelling Reds vie for their eighth win in nine encounters versus the Pirates this season when the National League Central rivals play the second contest of a three-game series at PNC Park on Wednesday.

Speedy Billy Hamilton showed some uncharacteristic power with a three-run blast in Tuesday's 9-1 triumph, marking his fourth homer of the season and second versus Pittsburgh this season. Like his team, the 26-year-old has found success against the Pirates by going 11-for-37 with nine RBIs and as many runs scored. While Cincinnati has answered a dismal 2-14 stretch by winning its second straight game overall and increasing its run total to 49-25 against Pittsburgh this season, the Pirates have dropped five of six to fall 6 1/2 games behind first-place Chicago. Adam Frazier registered his eighth three-hit performance of the season in the opener to improve to 9-for-14 with two RBIs scored in his last five games.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Robert Stephenson (0-4, 7.86 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Trevor Williams (4-4, 4.53)

Stephenson's lack of control proved costly on Thursday as he allowed a career-high seven walks over 4 1/3 innings in a 4-1 setback at Miami. "I knew what was going on, but I just wasn't able to fix it," the 24-year-old said of the 92-pitch outing. Stephenson surrendered a solo shot to Derek Dietrich to account for the fifth homer he's permitted in his last three outings (11 2/3 innings) after yielding five others in his previous 22 2/3 frames this season.

Williams settled for a hard-luck no-decision on Wednesday despite allowing just one run on five hits in six innings at San Francisco. The 25-year-old has permitted three earned runs or fewer in seven of his last eight outings, but only has a 1-1 mark during that stretch. Williams has received a no-decision against the Reds on two occasions this season, yielding four runs on five hits - including two homers - in four innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cincinnati 2B Jose Peraza carries a five-game hitting streak into Wednesday's tilt and is 15-for-36 versus Pittsburgh this season.

2. Pirates C Francisco Cervelli, who is hitless in his last three contests, is 2-for-27 in his last seven games.

3. Reds 1B Joey Votto is 9-for-23 with a homer, three RBIs and four runs scored during his six-game hitting streak.

GAME: Cleveland Indians (57-48) at Boston Red Sox (59-49)

Preview: Indians at Red Sox

Gracenote

Aug 2, 2017

The Cleveland Indians and Boston had no trouble scoring runs against some of the best pitchers on each team's staff Tuesday, and the Red Sox had the benefit of the last swing. Boston can pull off a three-game sweep of the American League Central-leading Indians when they host the finale on Wednesday.

Cleveland was stymied by Doug Fister in the opener on Monday but pounded Chris Sale and scored the go-ahead run off All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel in the ninth inning on Tuesday, only to watch their own star closer blow it in the bottom of the ninth as Christian Vazquez belted a walk-off homer to give the Red Sox a 12-10 win. The Indians, who have dropped three in a row on the heels of a nine-game winning streak, lead the AL Central by two games over the Kansas City Royals, who are struggling with the Baltimore Orioles this week. The Red Sox are finally beginning to score runs consistently and took back first place in the AL East with Tuesday’s triumph, moving a half-game ahead of the New York Yankees. Boston will send reigning Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello to the mound on Wednesday opposite Cleveland righty Trevor Bauer.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ESPN, STO (Cleveland), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Trevor Bauer (9-8, 5.25 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Rick Porcello (4-14, 4.55)

Bauer is coming off a gem against the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday, when he scattered one run and seven hits over eight innings while striking out six to earn the win. The UCLA product lasted just two-thirds of an inning in his first start after the All-Star break at Oakland on July 16 but won the next two and is trying to find some consistency in the second half. Bauer is seeing Boston for the first time since the AL Division Series last October, when he allowed three runs in 4 2/3 innings in the series opener.

Porcello went up against Bauer in that ALDS Game 1 last October and surrendered three home runs among six hits and five earned runs in 4 1/3 innings to suffer the loss. The New Jersey native's struggles with the long ball carried into the 2017 regular season, and his 25 home runs allowed on the season already matches his career high. Porcello is suffering through a stretch of four losses in as many starts and was reached for four runs in seven frames against Kansas City on Friday.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Red Sox placed 2B Dustin Pedroia on the 10-day disabled list on Tuesday due to a lingering knee injury.

2. Cleveland SS Francisco Lindor hit safely in each of his last 12 games.

3. Boston UTIL Eduardo Nunez is 11-for-22 with nine RBIs in five games since joining the team in a trade from the San Francisco Giants.

Preview: Dodgers at Braves

Gracenote

Aug 2, 2017

The Los Angeles Dodgers are running away with the National League West thanks in part to a pitching staff that has smothered opposing offenses, and enter the middle contest of a three-game series Wednesday at the Atlanta Braves off another outstanding game from their hurlers. Kenta Maeda and three relievers combined to allow only two runs on four hits as Los Angeles captured Tuesday’s series opener 3-2, winning its ninth game in a row and improving to 40-6 since June 7.

First baseman Cody Bellinger keeps cruising toward the NL Rookie-of-the-Year award, slugging his 29th homer while going 2-for-4 Tuesday as the Dodgers improved to 44 games over .500. While the Dodgers continue steamrolling through 2017, the Braves continued their shift toward 2018 in the series opener, promoting second baseman Ozzie Albies and starting pitcher Lucas Sims for their major-league debuts. Albies went 0-for-2 with a run scored and was left on deck when Nick Markakis struck out to end the series opener. The Braves are 11-for-70 with runners in scoring position in their past 10 games, going 1-9 during that stretch.

TV: 7:35 p.m. ET, SportsNet Los Angeles, FSN Southeast (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Brock Stewart (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Braves RH Julio Teheran (7-9, 5.09)

A sore shoulder shut down Stewart until the middle of June, as the 25-year-old makes his second start of the season Wednesday and eighth appearance overall. He gave up five runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings of a no-decision July 26 against Minnesota in his first starting assignment, after holding the Braves to two hits in two scoreless innings of relief July 20 in Los Angeles. Stewart has limited opponents to a .172 batting average while posting an 0.84 WHIP in 16 2/3 innings.

Teheran has pitched at times this season like the ace the Braves thought he could be, and at times like a back-of-the-rotation starter. The 26-year-old gave up eight runs in 4 2/3 innings Friday at Philadelphia - the sixth time in 21 starts he has surrendered six runs or more, but he also boasts 11 starts in which he gave up two earned runs or fewer. Teheran lost to the Dodgers on July 22, giving up four runs (three earned) in 6 1/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Braves INF Johan Camargo hit just .218 in his previous 14 games before going 1-for-3 with a two-run homer Tuesday.

2. Atlanta INF Matt Adams, who made his first start in left field with the Braves, left Tuesday’s game due to dizziness.

3. The Dodgers have won a major-league record 53 consecutive games in which they have held the lead at any point.

Preview: Mariners at Rangers

Gracenote

Aug 2, 2017

The Seattle Mariners are a season-best two games above .500 for the second time this campaign as they look to complete a three-game sweep of the host Texas Rangers on Wednesday. The Mariners registered 14 runs while winning the first two games of the set and are searching for their fifth consecutive victory.

Robinson Cano fueled Tuesday's 8-7 victory as he doubled twice - the latter being No. 499 of his career - and drove in three runs to help Seattle move within 1 1/2 games of Kansas City for the American League's second wild card. Five different Mariners recorded two hits - one being Nelson Cruz, who slugged his 22nd homer of the season. Texas has dropped four straight and has succumbed in 17 of its last 27 home games. Joey Gallo hit two homers to center field - one a tape-measure shot on the roof beyond the fence - and drove in four runs in Tuesday's setback.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, ROOT Northwest (Seattle), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH Ariel Miranda (7-4, 4.31 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Andrew Cashner (6-8, 3.48)

Miranda has gone four consecutive starts without a decision despite striking out a career-high 10 in six innings against the New York Mets in his last turn. The 28-year-old served up two homers against the Mets, marking the sixth time in his last eight turns he has given up multiple blasts. Miranda allowed three unearned runs and three hits but did not factor in the decision in a six-inning effort against the Rangers last season - his lone career outing against the club.

Cashner has won back-to-back starts and three of his last four. The 30-year-old limited Baltimore to one run and five hits over seven innings in his last outing and has posted a 2.36 ERA in his last four turns. Cashner is 0-1 with a 3.18 ERA in two starts against Seattle this season and 0-3 with a 3.58 ERA in six career appearances (five starts) while struggling against Kyle Seager (5-for-13, one homer) and Jean Segura (6-for-18).

WALK-OFFS

1. The Mariners are 8-3 against the Rangers this season and have won 11 of the last 15 meetings.

2. Seattle CF Jarrod Dyson, who recorded two hits and scored twice on Tuesday, stole his 24th base of the season and 200th of his career.

3. Texas 2B Rougned Odor has homered in three straight games and gone deep seven times in his last nine contests.

Preview: Diamondbacks at Cubs

Gracenote

Aug 2, 2017

The Chicago Cubs’ second-half revival has been powered by an improved pitching staff, and now the offense seems to be following suit. The Cubs look to continue their power surge when they host the Arizona Diamondbacks for the second of a three-game series Wednesday night.

Chicago blasted five home runs in a 16-4 victory in Tuesday’s series opener, improving to 14-3 since the All-Star break and maintaining a 2 1/2-game lead over Milwaukee in the National League Central. The Cubs set a season high for runs and tied their season highs for hits (17) and homers. Arizona dropped to second in the NL Wild Card standings with the loss, falling to 7-10 in the second half and 24-28 on the road. The Diamondbacks had allowed double-digit runs only once all season, in a 10-4 loss at St. Louis on June 29.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, WGN (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Zack Godley (4-4, 3.06 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Jake Arrieta (10-7, 4.03)

Godley snapped a four-start winless streak when he threw seven scoreless innings to win at St. Louis on Thursday, striking out seven. The 27-year-old has struck out at least six batters in seven straight starts, compiling 55 strikeouts in 44 innings over that stretch. The former Cubs farm hand faced Chicago once in 2015 and was tagged for six runs in 3 2/3 innings in a loss.

Arrieta has recorded three straight quality starts coming out of the All-Star break, going 2-0 with a 2.33 ERA. The 31-year-old allowed two runs and two hits over 6 2/3 innings to beat the Chicago White Sox last time out and has given up two or fewer runs in five of his last seven outings. Arrieta is 2-2 with a 3.31 ERA in five starts against Arizona.

WALK-OFFS

1. With two home runs Tuesday, Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo has 26 this season, becoming the third left-handed batter in franchise history with four 25-homer campaigns.

2. Arizona 1B Paul Goldschmidt has hit safely in 21 of his last 23 road games and is batting .376 during that span.

3. Cubs C Willson Contreras has reached base in 16 straight games, boasting a .411 on-base percentage over that stretch.

Preview: Cardinals at Brewers

Gracenote

Aug 2, 2017

Manny Pina has been heating up of late and aims to continue his torrid play when the Milwaukee Brewers host the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday for the middle contest of their three-game set. The 30-year-old Venezuelan recorded an RBI double to cap a three-run first inning in Tuesday's series-opening 3-2 victory, improving to 9-for-23 with a homer, three RBIs and as many runs scored in his last seven games.

Pina has clobbered the Cardinals this season, going 10-for-22 with a homer and four RBIs. While Milwaukee has won seven of 12 contests versus St. Louis, it has emerged victorious in just four of its last 15 overall and sits 2 1/2 games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the National League Central. Kolten Wong has rebounded from an 0-for-11 stretch by going 3-for-8 with a run scored in his last two contests for the Cardinals, who fell for just the third time in eight contests and trail the Cubs by 5 1/2 games. Tommy Pham matched Wong with a pair of hits in the opener to improve to 10-for-26 with six runs scored in his last eight contests.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Luke Weaver (0-1, 4.50 ERA) vs. Brewers LH Brent Suter (2-1, 2.40)

Weaver was done in by a grand slam from J.D. Martinez during a five-inning stint against Arizona on Thursday. "They got the right hitter there in that moment and I just elevated it a little too high and he got a good swing on it," the 23-year-old told reporters of the blast. Weaver is slated to make his second spot start in place of the injured Adam Wainwright (back), with the latter expected to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday.

Suter authored his finest performance of the season on Friday, scattering four hits over a career-high seven scoreless innings in a 2-1 triumph over Chicago. The 27-year-old has posted a 2-0 record with a 1.50 ERA and 25 strikeouts in five starts since being inserted into the rotation on July 3 to replace the injured Chase Anderson (oblique). Suter recorded four scoreless innings of relief versus the Cardinals in April before permitting three runs on five hits over 4 2/3 frames in a 6-0 setback against St. Louis on June 13.

WALK-OFFS

1. St. Louis SS Paul DeJong has gone 1-for-13 over his last four contests following a seven-game hitting streak.

3. Cardinals 3B Jedd Gyorko is 0-for-11 with four strikeouts in his last three games and is hitless in six of the last seven.

Preview: Rays at Astros

Gracenote

Aug 2, 2017

Evan Longoria looks to follow up a historic night when the Tampa Bay Rays visit the American League-best Houston Astros on Wednesday night for the third of a four-game series. Longoria became the second player in Rays history to hit for the cycle Tuesday when he went 4-for-5 with three RBIs in a 6-4 victory and became the franchise leader in runs scored with 766, passing Carl Crawford.

Longoria told Fox Sports Sun, “It’s tough to get four hits in a game, let alone a cycle. So, I’m very proud,” as he matched B.J. Upton’s cycle in 2009 while Tampa Bay moved within four games of first place in the AL East and 1 ½ of Kansas City for the second wild card. University of Houston product Austin Pruitt is slated to get his second straight start for the Rays and he will face 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel, who hopes to rebound after a rough start following a stint on the disabled list. The Astros own a big lead in the AL West, but have dropped four of their last six games and continue to add players to the DL. Veteran Carlos Beltran has hit safely in eight straight games for Houston, going 12-for-32 with six RBIs during that stretch.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Austin Pruitt (5-2, 6.63 ERA) vs. Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (9-0, 1.94)

Pruitt was solid through 4 2/3 innings in the longest outing of his career last time out before allowing a three-run homer to rookie Clint Frazier, and surrendered five runs in all over five frames to the New York Yankees. The 27-year-old was subbing for the injured Jake Odorizzi in the rotation and struck out a season-high seven, but yielded three homers. Pruitt pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win against Houston on April 22.

Keuchel makes his second start since coming off the disabled list after permitting three runs, six hits and three walks over three innings in a no-decision against Detroit. The 29-year-old Oklahoman gave up two or fewer runs in 10 of his first 11 starts in 2017 before missing almost two months with a neck injury. Logan Morrison is 3-for-9 with a double versus Keuchel, who is 1-4 with a 4.70 ERA in seven career starts against Tampa Bay.

WALK-OFFS

1. Houston OF Josh Reddick is 9-for-25 with eight RBIs and four runs scoring during a seven-game hitting streak to raise his average to .306.

2. Tampa Bay 1B-DH Lucas Duda is 6-for-16 with three homers and four RBIs while hitting safely in his first five games with the team since being acquired.

3. The Astros placed RHP Michael Feliz (shoulder) and LHP Tony Sipp (calf) on the disabled list Tuesday while activating LHP Francisco Liriano and recalling RHP Jordan Jankowski.

PREDICTION: Astros 7, Rays 2
