At the Gate - Wednesday
By Mike Dempsey

We are four days into the Saratoga summer meeting, and we had a good day to start off the week, five winners on top on the 10-race card on Monday.

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin is off to a torrid start at the meeting, picking up two more wins on Monday that gives him six winners from just eight starters to lead in the trainer standings.

Todd Pletcher, going for his 13th training title at the Spa has won five races from 20 starters and is second in the standings. His biggest rival is Chad Brown, who has won three races from his 20 starters.

Brown has finished second to Pletcher in each of the last four years, but appears to have the ammunition to finally turn the tables this summer.

Jason Servis has been saddling live runners at the meeting, going 6-3-2-1 so far.

Irad Ortiz, Jr. leads all jockeys with eight winners from his 32 mounts. He won the meeting here last summer with 57 wins.

John Velazquez is off to a good start picking up six winners over the first four days of the meet from his 24 mounts. Javier Castellano is third in the jockey standings with five from 28 mounts.

Julien Leparoux (0 for 15) and Jose Lezcano (0 for 13) are still looking for their first wins at tem meeting.

We have racing at Saratoga six days a week, with Tuesday our only off day.

Here is today’s second race (the opener is a steeplechase) from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:

SAR Race 2 Md $40,000 (1:33 ET)
#6 Massena 5-2
#7 Trappe 4-1
#3 Starry Messenger 7-2
#8 Sebonack 5-1

Analysis: Massena set the early fractions while down along a deep rail and weakened to finish third last out going a mile in his first start for a tag. The Tony D trainee cuts back to sprint here for a barn that is 25% winners moving runners from route to sprint. he owns solid early and mid pace numbers and should be sitting a good trip just off the pace. He is out of a Saint Ballado mare that has dropped five winners, top earner Angel Dreams ($140,121).

Trappe is a $27,000 Ocala purchase by Trappe Shot (13% winners with debut runners) out of an El Corredor mare that has dropped a couple of runners, both winners. The Asmssuen barn is 8 for 40 (20%) with first timers here at the Spa dating back five years and had a debut winner here on opening day with Geroux in the irons. He picks up Castellano here and they combine to win at a 29% clip (with a +ROI) when teaming up.

Wagering
WIN: #6 to win at 2-1 or better.
EX: 6,7 / 3,6,7,8
TRI: 6,7 / 3,6,7,8 / 3,5,6,7,8

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 8 Honorable Miss (5:02 ET)
#1 Paulassilverlining 2-1
#7 Bar of Gold 9-2
#6 Sarah Sis 5-1
#4 Haveyougoneaway 3-1

Analysis: Paulassilverlining tracked the early pace and drew clear late to win the Vagrancy Handicap (G3) last out at Belmont Park, her sixth win in 13 career starts. She won the Distaff Handicap (G3) two back and four back popped a 107 Beyer beating optional claimers on the inner track at Aqueduct. She runs well fresh and owns a solid pace profile throughout. She looks as if she will be tough in this spot. her win over the surface came in her maiden score back in '14.

Bar of Gold was third last out in the Bed of Roses Handicap (G3) at Belmont Park, beaten 2 1/2 lengths for the top spot. She won the state bed Critical Eye two back in a sharp effort. She ran really well here last summer running second in the Prioress (G2) and the Test (G1). The Prioress was her last start at today's six furlong distance. She has shown some late run and should get some pace to run at in this spot.

Sarah Sis took the field gate to wire to win the Chicago Handicap (G3) at seven furlongs over the fake stuff at Arlington Park last out. She has sown she can run on dirt, winning the Raven Run (G2) at Keeneland last fall. She looks back on track after coming up short in her three previous starts against a bit other than she faces here. She may end up offering decent value in this spot.

Wagering
WIN: #1 to win at 2-1 or better.
EX: 1,7 / 1,4,6,7
TRI: 1,7 / 1,4,6,7 / 1,2,4,6,7

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Saratoga
R1: #2 Albany Road 8-1
R4: #1 Stroke Play 12-1
R5: #7 Safe With Me 8-1
R6: #1 Tizacity 8-1
R7: #9 Polar Axis 8-1
R9: #4 Justa Lady 8-1
R9: 32 Seeking Paradise 12-1
R10: #9 Irish Cat 8-1

Good luck today!

# 4 IMAPIXIEATMIDNIGHT 9/2

# 2 AL MAR FOXYECLIPSE 9/2

# 3 KB'S SPEEDY FOX 8/1

IMAPIXIEATMIDNIGHT is the best play in this contest. Roland knows this fine animal well. Excellent in the money record when starting as a team. Reason to like this filly as she has in the cart one of the best drivers in win percentage this last month. The driver/horse combination percentages point out that this duo are solid in the money finishers when working with one another. AL MAR FOXYECLIPSE - Handicappers have been looking smart recently by playing solid standardbreds when Wiseman is controlling. Last 30 days ROI is great. Horse players love to play the driver of this colt - superb win pct lately. KB'S SPEEDY FOX - Gelding and driver go together like a hand in a glove. They finish in the money 75 percent of their races. Great in the money figure for Banks and this entrant. A really strong chance to get the win.

# 1 GEE WIZZ GEORGE 5/1

# 3 PROVE'EM ALL WRONG 3/1

# 9 C C'S ENCORE 12/1

GEE WIZZ GEORGE looks our best wagering option in this gathering. Positively will improve with the change in equipment, second time hoppled today. Rastetter has been able to get this contender to perform when sending to the post. Definitely worth a look. PROVE'EM ALL WRONG - Can't miss based on speed ratings which have been outstanding (66 avg) these days. Trainer is sending this contender to race first time hoppled. Just might be the key here. C C'S ENCORE - Sometimes you just have to go with a feeling, get behind this one's chances.

The Walker Group Picks

# 5 D' KENNESAW CAT 12/1

# 2 ERASE THE DEFICIT 3/1

# 8 SECRET SCORE 7/2

I give the nod to D' KENNESAW CAT in here and the potential return justifies the very risky nature of the long odds. Looks very good versus this field and will most likely be one of the front-runners. This mare must be given a chance just off the earnings per start in dirt sprint contests alone. ERASE THE DEFICIT - Looks competitive versus this field and ought to be one of the leaders. Has to be given a shot - I like the figs from the last contest. SECRET SCORE - Is tough not to examine based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been very strong - 64 avg - of late. She has competitive class ratings, averaging 82, and has to be carefully examined for this event.

# 1A BEAR'S SONG 7/2

# 3 TAX BREAKER 6/1

# 2 VINCE'S VALENTINA 3/1

BEAR'S SONG gets the edge as the bet in here. This mare looks very good in here since Morales has a sharp winning percentage with horses going this distance. Morales has her trained very well to break quickly out of the gate. Morales has this mare running well and is a very good selection based on the solid speed figures garnered in sprint races lately. TAX BREAKER - Should finish in the top three without any worries. Could beat this field given the 79 speed rating posted in her last outing. VINCE'S VALENTINA - Trainer boasts strong win figures at this distance and surface. Displays solid Equibase Speed Figures on average overall when compared with the rest of this group

#1 HELP FROM HEAVEN (ML=6/1)
#4 UNSINKABLE (IRE) (ML=3/1)

HELP FROM HEAVEN - Such a strong closer. He'll try his best to catch the speed and pass them on the way to the winner's circle. Changes tracks from last out at Monmouth Park to here. Multiple wins at multiple race tracks tell me this thoroughbred likes to switch it up, so that's a good sign. UNSINKABLE (IRE) - When Doyle and Voss team up on horses the ROI has been great at +21. Voss brings him right back. I suggest you stay with this hot gelding. This horse has shown the class ability to win on different racing tracks. Making the move from Parx Racing for today's event, I have to believe he's ready to run. You have to really like that latest race rating, 108, which is the top last race figure of this bunch. I do like foreign invaders that have run well at a major foreign track.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 ALL FOR US (ML=4/1), #7 BERLAND (IRE) (ML=5/1), #2 ALBANY ROAD (ML=8/1),

ALL FOR US - I'm foreseeing a less than stellar try out of him in today's event. BERLAND (IRE) - I prognosticate a disappointing effort for this animal in this race. ALBANY ROAD - If you keep betting these kind of 'bridesmaid' types, you're going to be dissatisfied frequently.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Bet on #1 HELP FROM HEAVEN to win if you can get at least 8/5 odds

#5 SILVER CAUSEWAY (ML=5/1)

SILVER CAUSEWAY - If you review the PP's for this entrant, you'll see she has recorded the top Equibase speed figure at the distance and surface. A repeat effort in this race and this horse has a superb chance to win. She may be way off the pace, but Delcid should be smacking her at the top of the lane on the way to the winner's circle. Running on the grass today, you should review a horse's class. This one has the top number in the bunch. Faced tougher in the last race at Lone Star Park. Based on Equibase class ratings, this is a weaker bunch, so I will put this thoroughbred on my list of strong contenders.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 HEAVEN'S DEVIL (ML=3/1), #2 MEG AND CLAIR (ML=7/2), #4 BRASS TACKS (ML=4/1),

HEAVEN'S DEVIL - This favorite ran on Jul 4th and hasn't had a morning drill after that. Tough to put any money on this filly on the top end. Likes to finish in the money though. BRASS TACKS - You always figure that this horse has a shot to cross the finish line in first, but she comes up short often. Don't think this entrant will make an impact in today's event. That last fig was pedestrian when compared with today's class figure.

The Honorable Miss Handicap

6.0 FURLONGS DIRT GRADE II FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD STAKES $200,000.00 PURSE

#1 PAULASSILVERLINING
#7 BAR OF GOLD
#2 DISCO CHICK
#4 HAVEYOUGONEAWAY

The Honorable Miss is named after the Pen-Y-Bryn Farm's multiple stakes-winning mare. Trained by Frank Whiteley and ridden by Jacinto Vasquez, the daughter of Damascus was 19-12-9 from 62 career starts, with earnings of $437,973. Often competing against males, in 1975 she won the Toboggan Handicap, the Vagrancy Handicap, the Gravesend Handicap and the Fall Highweight Handicap as a 5-year-old. She won the Fall Highweight again in 1976. First run in 1992, the Honorable Miss was run at 6½ furlongs in 1993, and at six furlongs thereafter. Here in the 25th running of "The Miss," #1 PAULASSILVERLINING is the overall speed leader in this stakes field sprinting at 6.0 furlongs on the dirt, and has hit the board in each of her last five outings, with her last four efforts, including a trio of wins, also qualifying as "POWER RUNS." #7 BAR OF GOLD, the pace profile leader in this field, and has hit the board in four of her respective last five starts, including a "POWER RUN WIN" in her 2nd race back.

Northfield: Wednesday 7/27 Analysis + Pick Four Ticket

Race 8 - $10,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Jeremey’s $1 Pick Four Play:

1,7,9 / 1,3,4 / 1,3,4,6 / 2 = $36

Best Bet: COME ON HERBIE (4th)

Spot Play: SPLITSVILLE (10th)

Race 1

(6) JOAN D'ARC three-year-old filly makes her first start for new connections against easier. (1) ENDLESS DESIRE has just been racing evenly but gets the best post in a weak and inconsistent field. (4) RIBBONS OF COLOR just missed at this level last week; threat.

Race 2

(6) OU NIP TOO filly is the horse to beat if she minds her manners. (5) SMOKEY JOE needs some racing luck but might be closer turning for home. (7) KAYLA JADE filly has finished second in three straight and five of her last six; use underneath.

Race 3

(5) CYRANO JONES impeccably bred pacer will look to make it two straight for the top barn. (2) SHADY'S DREAM BOY has just been racing evenly but looks to be in line for a nice ground-saving trip. (1) ROCKIN TO THE MOON pacer has room to improve third start back off the layoff.

Race 4

(3) COME ON HERBIE has burned cash in two straight. The lightly raced 4-year-old can beat this field if he minds his manners. (9) STYLE ONE had shown good improvement prior to the miscue last out. (4) BLACK DENIM N LACE five-year-old mare has been knocking on the door against similar.

Race 5

(9) QUALITY BUD might have gained some confidence with the fair win last week. The 3-year-old had been facing much tougher in Indiana. (2) JOHNNY MAGIC will look to make it two straight at this level; fires early. (4) BABY BUNTIN has shown a decent burst but is best used underneath with the low percentage pilot.

Race 6

In a very tough race to gauge, (1) CONTECH will offer a big price and could be in the right spot for a piece. (6) FORTUNE JAMES can pop off a good effort from time to time and also looks to offer value. (7) SAM HAYES was completely empty last start against similar. The 6-year-old will offer a much better price this week and can bounce back.

Race 7

(6) MY BOOGIE SHOES takes a significant drop in class and was an easy winner when last seen at this level. (3) OUR MCLOVIN raced well last week and is one of few threats in the race. (9) MANTALIC is one of the faster pacers in the field but needs a smooth trip.

Race 8

(1) WINTER CRUISE should be on the lead or in the pocket early on; threat. (7) RAIDERS BOY has been competitive against much better on the year but needs to find a way into the race. (9) MAJOR SPEED has just been racing evenly but could shake loose late for a piece.

Race 9

(1) BAD MOONSHINE three-year-old has a decent pedigree and room to improve with the best post. (4) OHIO RAYCINO doesn't look the best on paper but gets sent out for proven connections. The 3-year-old has hit the board against similar. (3) INDEPENDENT G veteran pacer is just now back in racing shape after a seven year layoff.

Race 10

(6) SPLITSVILLE trotter has not come back to form from last year, however the 7-year-old faces much weaker. (3) ZORGWIJK MERCEDES could need a start off the layoff but owns a good burst of speed when timed right. (1) B COR THOMAS almost got the job done from the eight hole last week. If the 9-year-old repeats that effort he can score at a price.

Race 11

(2) SCHMATIE finds an easy spot for a big piece. (1) SAND TILLY LACE paced a decent mile last week and gets sent out for the top barn. (7) BET ON ME HANOVER is up against it from the outside; use underneath.

Race 12

(5) SOUTHERN CAROL takes a significant drop in class with an upgrade in the bike. (9) AMERICANGENERATION just needs a smooth trip from the second tier for a chance to hit the ticket. (4) SAM HAS CLASS morning line favorite is 0 for the year and picks up a low percentage pilot; use caution.

Race 13

In a weak field full of question marks, (4) SILVERHILL DELIGHT just missed last week and looks to be improving. (9) TOBINS FORTUNE has been close against tougher but is still 0 for the year. (1) LUCKY IVAN pacer is excellent at burning cash despite looking like the fastest horse in the race.

Race 14

(5) HOORAY KATIE will offer a nice price and is capable with a fast pace to close into. (4) HELLO CHIPPER mare doesn't have the best win percentage but is a threat with a trouble-free trip. (1) GOING IN GLORY beat weaker last start and benefits from the best post.

Race 15

(5) POR QUE NO filly has hit the board in all her starts for the new connections. (4) A MARY CAN STING has room to improve against weaker. (6) RADIO LOVER is best used underneath for a low percentage pilot.

July Pitchers Report
By Marc Lawrence

Fireworks and the MLB All-Star game go hand-in-hand during the month of July. It also denotes the start of the 2nd half of the MLB campaign. And as we’ve come to learn the key to each and every team’s fortune lies on the pitching staff.

Can they sustain or will they unravel like Jose Canseco going back on a fly ball? Stay tuned. What we do know is that certain pitchers love hurling this time of the season while others tend to get lit up like a roman candle on the 4thof July.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of July.

On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in July, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each July over the last three years.

And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s July list.

GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

*Chen, Wei-Yin - 9-4 (5-1 H)

The Miami left-hander has not been terribly effective with an ERA hovering around 5. If Chen can develop more command, he's shown again this year he's tough when in challenging situations, allowing .186 batting average and .271 on-base percentage with runners in scoring position.

Garza, Matt - 9-3 (5-1 H)

Since coming back from spring training injury on June 14th, the Milwaukee right-hander has been a mix of good and bad, but come through when it counted. Opposing hitters are batting over .300 against Garza, but he's held those runners in check and induced a heavy dose of ground balls that have led to outs. If he continues, this Brewers starter might be effective.

Greinke, Zack - 11-4 (6-2 H)

Though Arizona is falling short of preseason expectations, the Diamondbacks ace is not and, other than Clayton Kershaw, has arguably been as effective as any pitcher since the end of April with batters hitting around .200 against him. Once again his array of pitches are finding the right spots and fastball is cooking!

Kazmir, Scott - 10-5 (6-2 H)

When Kazmir misses on location for fastball, the other team's lineup begins to look for off-speed stuff, which has caused his inconsistency this season. When he's working the corners on the knees early in the count, this sets up secondary pitches. In the past he's done so in July, let's see what he comes up with this time.

*Kershaw, Clayton - 12-3 (8-0 A)

When either Kershaw loses or has a less than stellar performance, which is infrequent, it is home page news on most sports websites. With opponents batting just .185 against him, baseball's best pitcher has close to as many home runs surrendered (6) as walks (9) to start the month over 121 innings. It’s no wonder his name is whispered in the same company as Sandy Koufax.

Kluber, Corey - 13-4 (9-2 H)

Since winning the Cy Young award in 2014, Kluber has not been able to match that magical season, but is part of a very good Cleveland rotation. Looking ahead, if the Indians righty can do a better job than permitting .281 batting averages with runners in scoring position, all his numbers will drop and his victories will go up. Note: Kluber’s numbers above also reflect his career team mark during July.

*Liriano, Francisco - 12-2 (7-0 H)

After several fine seasons with Pittsburgh, Liriano has not been effective in 2016. Walks and home runs have done him in and in order to reflect past results of July, he's going to have to stop leaving pitches in the heart of the plate.

Peralta, Wily - 8-4 (5-1 H)

Peralta has been thoroughly ineffective all season (6.68 ERA) and was sent to minors after June 11th start. His return this month or this season depends on his Triple-A results. Note: Peralta’s numbers above also reflect his career team mark during July.

Price, David - 11-5 (7-1 A)

To date, the Boston lefty could be described as a mild disappointment, with an ERA north of 4.5 most of the season. No longer owning an upper 90's heater, Price does not blow away as many hitters as before and the fastball lacks some of the previous movement of the past. The slider has not had the usual bite from start to start. Red Sox need this ace to be one.

Ross, Tyson - 10-4 (4-1 H)

Ross has not pitched since he hit the DL with right shoulder inflammation after first start in April. San Diego Union reports a return even this month appears optimistic.
Note: Ross’ numbers above also reflect his career team mark during July.

Santana, Ervin - 11-4 (8-1 H)

Like his teammates, Santana is not having a good year, as opposing hitters are clocking him for nearly .300 average, compared to .256 over his 11-year career. Little reason to believe this month will match the past even if he improves with this Twins club.

*Volquez, Edinson - 10-5 (6-1 A)

Never a frontline hurler, Volquez numbers this campaign have matched the Royals, being very ordinary to date. The Dominican Republic native has done the job against right-handed batters, who have been knocking him around for nearly .300 average.

BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

Wood, Alex - 4-8 (0-6 A)

Wood – the only pitcher to appear on the July Bad Month list this season - was initially expected to be shut down for four weeks after landing on the 15-day disabled list at the end of May with a posterior impingement in his throwing elbow. Currently, the timetable is for mid-July return, but the oft-injured pitcher can hardly be counted on as record shows. Note: Wood’’s numbers above reflect his career team mark during July.

MLB roundup: Rockies roll, end Orioles' win streak
By The Sports Xchange

BALTIMORE -- Colorado's Carlos Gonzalez and Trevor Story had two RBIs apiece to lead the surging Rockies past the first-place Baltimore Orioles 6-3 on Tuesday night.
Colorado has won five of its past six games and rebounded from a disappointing series opener when they lost in the 10th inning on a throwing error by right-hander Jordan Lyles.
The Orioles' Chris Tillman (14-3) fell short in his bid for a major league-leading 15th victory. He struggled early and often, allowing a season-tying high six runs on nine hits with four strikeouts over five innings. It was Tillman's first loss in nearly a month, which also ended his team's five-game winning streak.

Marlins 5, Phillies 0
MIAMI -- Giancarlo Stanton drove in two runs to lead Miami to a win over Philadelphia at Marlins Park.
Marlins center fielder Ichiro Suzuki, who started the day needing four hits to reach 3,000, went 1-for-5 and also stole a base.
Both of Stanton's RBI hits came on shots to the opposite field.
His single in the sixth inning ended Miami's 24-inning scoreless streak, giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead.

Cardinals 3, Mets 2 (Game 1)
NEW YORK -- Jedd Gyorko hit a two-run home run in the third inning, and St. Louis defeated New York in the opener of a doubleheader.
The Cardinals opened their 10-game road trip in a mostly empty stadium, and all the runs were scored in the opening four innings.
Gyorko's 13th home run of the year and fifth in eight games wound up being the difference for the Cardinals, who have homered in a season-high 16 consecutive games, three shy of the 2006 club record.

Mets 3, Cardinals 1 (Game 2)
NEW YORK -- Bartolo Colon pitched seven strong innings and combined with two relievers on a three-hitter as New York earned a split of their doubleheader against St. Louis with a victory in the nightcap.
Colon (9-5) rebounded from three consecutive starts that did not last beyond 5 2/3 innings by allowing a run and three hits. It was the fifth time he lasted at least seven innings and allowed one run this season.
Colon finished his 227th career win by getting eight strikeouts without a walk, marking the eight time the right-hander did not issue a free pass this season. He threw 65-of-87 pitches for strikes and faced two above the minimum.

White Sox 3, Cubs 0
CHICAGO -- James Shields threw 7 2/3 scoreless innings, and Adam Eaton homered as the White Sox earned their fourth straight win, defeating the Cubs at U.S. Cellular Field.
Shields, who was booed off the mound on June 8 following a rough first start for the White Sox after being obtained from the San Diego Padres, left to a standing ovation Tuesday. He allowed only four hits while striking out five and walking four.
David Robertson recorded his 24th save with a scoreless ninth inning for the White Sox.

Mariners 7, Pirates 4
PITTSBURGH -- Seattle ace Felix Hernandez, in his second start back from a calf injury, gave up three runs over the first two innings before settling down to lead the Mariners to a win over Pittsburgh at PNC Park.
Hernandez (5-4) pitched six innings, giving up all four runs on nine hits, with three strikeouts and a walk. Steve Cishek pitched the ninth for his 24th save.
Kyle Seager was 3 for 4 with a home run, and Franklin Gutierrez also homered for Seattle, which scored three runs in the third and three more in the fourth. The Mariners have won five of their past seven games.

Braves 2, Twins 0
MINNEAPOLIS -- Adonis Garcia homered and Lucas Harrell pitched six strong innings to lead Atlanta to a win over Minnesota at Target Field.
Almost 25 years since playing in one of the most epic World Series of all time, won by the Twins with a 1-0 victory in Game 7, the Braves and Twins locked up in another low-scoring game. The stakes were a little different this time around; both Atlanta and Minnesota have the worst records in their respective leagues.
Both Harrell and Twins starter Ervin Santana were making perhaps their final starts with their clubs. Each have been mentioned among players who could change uniforms before Monday's trade deadline.

Tigers 9, Red Sox 8
BOSTON -- Tyler Collins walked with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to force in the winning run, and Detroit edged Boston at Fenway Park.
Collins worked a two-out, full-count walk from Red Sox reliever Robbie Ross Jr. (1-2), allowing Justin Upton to trot home from third.
Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run shot for his 20th homer of the season, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia had three hits and two RBIs for Detroit (53-48), which won for the fourth time in six games.

Blue Jays 7, Padres 6 (12 innings)
TORONTO -- Toronto scored three runs in the bottom of the 12th inning -- including the winner on a wild pitch --to come back and defeat San Diego.
With Edwin Encarnacion batting, Paul Clemens uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Devon Travis to score the winning run from third.
The Padres had taken the lead in the top of the 12th on a two-run homer by Matt Kemp against Jesse Chavez (1-2), who picked up the win.

Yankees 6, Astros 3
HOUSTON -- CC Sabathia snapped a six-start winless streak and New York claimed its third consecutive series with a victory over Houston at Minute Maid Park.
Sabathia (6-8) produced his best start since mid-June, allowing just two runs on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings. He has surrendered at least four runs and seven hits in each of his six starts dating back to a 4-1 win over the Twins on June 16.
Jacoby Ellsbury finished 3-for-5 with Carlos Beltran, Mark Teixeira and Starling Castro recorded two hits apiece to pace the Yankees offense. The bottom third of the Yankees order produced five RBIs.

Angels 13, Royals 0
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Yunel Escobar had five hits, matching his career high, and Carlos Perez contributed four hits, including a home run, as Los Angeles topped Kansas City.
Johnny Giavotella had three hits, including two doubles, and Kole Calhoun drove in four runs as the Angels accumulated 22 hits, equaling their season high. Mike Trout drove in three runs with two hits.
The Angels are 5-0 this season against the Royals.

Indians 7, Nationals 6
CLEVELAND -- Francisco Lindor's RBI single capped a three-run bottom of the ninth inning as Cleveland rallied for a wild win over Washington at Progressive Field.
Reliever Bryan Shaw (2-4) got the win for Cleveland while Nationals closer Jonathan Papelbon (2-4) took the loss.
After Washington scored a run in the top of the ninth inning to extend its lead to 6-4, Jose Ramirez led off the bottom of the ninth inning by drawing a walk from Papelbon. Tyler Naquin, pinch hitting for Juan Uribe, lined a double into the gap in left center field, scoring Ramirez to make it 6-5.

Athletics 6, Rangers 3
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Sonny Gray remained undefeated in Texas, Josh Reddick drove in three runs and Oakland beat the Rangers at Globe Life Park.
The A's evened the three-game series at a game apiece against the American League West leaders. Texas had its three-game winning streak snapped.
Gray put together another strong start against the Rangers, particularly in Texas. The righty went six innings and allowed three runs on five hits, striking out a season-high eight. Gray improved to 5-9 on the season and 8-3 lifetime against Texas, including 6-0 in Arlington.

Brewers 9, Diamondbacks 4
MILWAUKEE -- Scooter Gennett and Jonathan Villar each hit two-run singles in the eighth inning as Milwaukee rallied for a victory over Arizona at Miller Park.
Gennett put Milwaukee ahead 4-3 with an RBI single in the sixth, but an error on left-hander Will Smith led to Arizona tying the score in the seventh.
Daniel Hudson (1-2) allowed three of his first four batters to reach base in the eighth and Gennett made him pay with a base hit up the middle that put the Brewers in front.

Dodgers 3, Rays 2
LOS ANGELES -- Yasmani Grandal's seventh-inning home run was the difference as Los Angeles held on for a victory over Tampa Bay before 46,960 fans at Dodger Stadium.
Dodgers starter Bud Norris blanked the Rays for 6 1/3 innings, striking out six and allowing just two hits with two walks (one intentional). Norris (6-9) also recorded his 1,000 strikeout during the win, striking out Kevin Kiermaier in the fourth.
Closer Kenley Jansen earned his 30th save with a scoreless ninth.

Giants 9, Reds 7
SAN FRANCISCO -- Matt Cain (2-6) belted a three-run home run in San Francisco's four-run second inning, and he went 5 1/3 innings to win for the first time since May 21.
Five relievers followed Cain with closer Santiago Casilla surrendering a ninth-inning run before posting his 22nd save. The Giants, who led 5-0 after three innings, held on for only their second win in 10 games following the All-Star break.
The Reds drew within 6-4 following a two-run home run in the sixth inning by ex-Giant Adam Duvall -- the left fielder's first of two on the evening -- with the blast chasing Cain.

Preview: Phillies (46-56) at Marlins (54-46)

Game: 3
Venue: Marlins Park
Date: July 27, 2016 12:10 PM EDT

MIAMI -- Zach Eflin, a Florida native who is from the Orlando area, will pitch in his home state for the first time as a major-leaguer on Wednesday.

He will oppose Marlins left-hander Adam Conley, a 26-year-old who has emerged as Miami's No. 2 starter.

The Marlins (54-46) and Phillies (46-56) have split the first two games of the series entering Wednesday's finale.

Eflin, 22, was drafted in the first round (supplemental), 33rd overall, in 2012, straight out of high school. He has already been traded twice -- by the San Diego Padres as a part of a package to get outfielder Matt Kemp and by the Los Angeles Dodgers as part of a deal to get shortstop Jimmy Rollins.

Now, though, Eflin has settled in as one of the Phillies' brightest hopes in the rotation. He has pitched two complete games this month -- highly unusual in today's major leagues, especially for a rookie.

His most recent start was a three-hit shutout win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Eflin walked no one and needed only 100 pitches to earn his third win. He is 3-3 with a 3.40 ERA overall.

Eflin has come a long way since June 14, when he made his big-league debut in an 11-3 loss at the Toronto Blue Jays. He lasted just 2 2/3 innings, walking three and allowing nine hits and nine runs, eight earned. The Jays hit three homers off Eflin.

"After his debut, we were kind of surprised because he was advertised as a guy with good command," Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said. "He pitches to both sides of the plate, but we didn't see that (in his debut).

"But it's not unusual for a (rookie) to come up, and the catcher doesn't really know him, so they don't pitch to his strength."

Mackanin said Eflin has improved "incrementally" since his debut.

"His command has been really good," Mackanin said. "To pitch the way he's pitching, that's one of the things I'm really excited about with (our team), the young starters we have. Our pitching has been probably our best strength because of our young starters."

Miami's rotation has been mostly erratic once you get past All-Star Jose Fernandez. But Conley (6-5, 3.58 ERA) has had a good July.

Conley is 2-0 with a 2.35 ERA this month, striking out 21 batters in 23 innings.

"He's been pretty reliable," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said of Conley, who is 1-0 against the Phillies this year. "I think he's going to get better.

"With time, experience and general strength, I think he will get more consistent over time."

In other story lines for Wednesday's game:

Marlins outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, who went 1-for-5 and also stole a base on Tuesday, needs three more hits for 3,000. Manager Don Mattingly has not said if Suzuki will be in Wednesday's starting lineup.

In addition, Suzuki's 507 steals are the most among active players.

Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton has 523 career RBIs, which ties him with former Marlins star Miguel Cabrera for third place in franchise history. With one more RBI, Stanton will be alone in third place.

Marlins closer A.J. Ramos (finger) was not available Tuesday. His status is day to day.

Phillies outfielder Peter Bourjos left Tuesday's game with an injury to his right shoulder. He is day-to-day.

Preview: Nationals (58-42) at Indians (57-41)

Game: 2
Venue: Progressive Field
Date: July 27, 2016 12:10 PM EDT

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians and Washington Nationals will conclude their brief two-game series on Wednesday afternoon at Progressive Field. Both teams are struggling of late.

Even with their dramatic 7-6 victory thanks to a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning in the first game of the series Tuesday, the Indians are just 5-5 in their last 10 games. The Nationals, meanwhile, have lost six of their last eight.

Both teams have had slumping bullpens of late, and Washington's bullpen turned a potential victory into a loss Tuesday as closer Jonathan Papelbon turned a 6-4 Nationals lead into a 7-6 Nationals loss.

In his last two appearances, which have come in the Nationals' last two games, both of them ninth inning losses, Papelbon has imploded. In those two games he has an 80.60 ERA, having allowed six earned runs, six hits and three walks in 2/3 of an inning.

Papelbon has been so shaky that manager Dusty Baker was asked following the loss on Tuesday about whether he was contemplating making a change in the closer's role going forward.

"It's too soon to say after the game," Baker said. "That's his job. That's what he's getting paid for. We just have to go back to the drawing board."

Papelbon said the last two games haven't shaken his confidence.

"A couple of bad outings. Chalk it up to that," he said. "I've had them before in my career. In this game only the strong survive. You've got to keep going. That's how it works."

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see who Baker summons from the bullpen Wednesday if the Nationals have the lead going into the ninth inning.

Cleveland's bullpen has also struggled over the last few weeks, to the point that the Indians and Nationals are both teams expected to be actively seeking relief help prior to Monday's trade deadline.

The Indians would also like to get all-star outfielder Michael Brantley back in their lineup. Brantley hasn't played in a major league game since May 9, due to lingering issues from offseason surgery on his right shoulder. But Brantley is still out, and there is no timetable for his return.

"He wants desperately to play. So much so that he's almost apologizing for being out," manager Terry Francona said. "But his shoulder hurts. It's not his fault."

Wednesday's pitching matchup features two starters who are both having excellent years. The Nationals will start Stephen Strasburg, who is 13-1 with a 2.83 ERA this year. In two career starts vs. the Indians he is 1-1 with a 1.74 ERA.

Strasburg is coming off his only loss of the season, a 6-3 loss to the Dodgers on July 21. In that game he gave up six runs and seven hits in six innings, although he did strikeout 10 and only walked one.

Carlos Carrasco will start for the Indians. He will be making his 15th start of the season. He is 7-3 with a 2.31 ERA. In his last six starts, Carrasco is 5-1 with a 1.16 ERA and he has held opposing teams to a .149 batting average. Wednesday will be his first career appearance against Washington.

Preview: Padres (43-58) at Blue Jays (57-44)

Game: 3
Venue: Rogers Centre
Date: July 27, 2016 12:37 PM EDT

TORONTO -- Melvin Upton Jr.'s first game for his new team likely will be against the team he just left.

Upton is expected to start in right field Wednesday afternoon for the Toronto Blue Jays against the San Diego Padres with Jose Bautista, just coming off a toe injury, possibly starting at DH. Like all lineup proposals, it is subject to change but the Blue Jays did acquire Upton to play him.

Upton was acquired by the Blue Jays in a trade with the Padres on Tuesday. The Padres acquired minor league right-handed pitcher Hansel Rodriguez.

The Padres are at Rogers Centre for a three-game series with the Blue Jays but it wasn't as easy for Upton as crossing the field to change dugouts.

Before he could officially join the Blue Jays he had to visit customs at Queenston, N.Y., about a 90-minute drive away.

"I guess I had to get a working visa," Upton said upon his return ""About an hour-and-a-half ride there, sat at border patrol for a little while, jumped in the car and came back. But it all went pretty smoothly."

Upton was at Rogers Centre more than two hours before game time and did get one at-bat, a fielder's choice grounder in the seventh inning as a pinch hitter for Toronto in the 7-6 win over the Padres in 12 innings.

The outfielder will be used primarily against left-handed pitching and goes from a non-contending team in the Padres (43-58) to a contending team in the Blue Jays (57-44). The Blue Jays enter Wednesday's games in second place in the American League East, two games behind the Baltimore Orioles. Upton played several seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East.

"This is all where it started, in this division," Upton said. "I definitely know the cities, and it's a tough division. But this is a really good ball club all around. It's definitely not uncomfortable, and I'm definitely looking forward to it."

He will get tasted of life in the AL East on Friday when the Orioles visit Rogers Centre for a three-game series.

"We love everything Melvin did for us, the way he played, how he defended the field, how he swung the bat," Padres manager Andy Green said. "But we're looking at what we're going to do in the future. We want to give these younger guys a real look."

First, the Blue Jays must deal with the Padres and will be going for a three-game sweep.

The Padres have hit home runs in a club-record 24 straight games but it has not helped them win either of their first two games at Rogers Centre.

"It's a fun thing to keep track of," said Alex Dickerson who has homered in three consecutive games including a three-run shot Tuesday. "And it's showing that we're able to create quick offense on a consistent basis. We've just got to be able to string that together more often."

The Blue Jays made an adjustment in the rotation for Wednesday, electing to go with knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (7-11, 4.44 ERA) on Wednesday with three days' rest against the Padres. Marco Estrada, the schedule starter on Wednesday, going Friday in the opener against the Orioles. The Blue Jays feel it is a better matchup.

The Padres will counter with right-hander Luis Perdomo (4-4, 6.93 ERA), who has never faced the Blue Jays before.

Dickey is 2-7 in 16 career games, including 13 starts, against the Orioles despite a 3.90 ERA so it was decided to pitch him against San Diego. He is 1-2 with a 2.76 ERA in four career starts against the Padres. He will be pitching on three days' rest after allowing seven hits and six runs in three-plus innings in a 14-5 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Saturday. He used only 72 pitches in the start and Josh Thole, his regular catcher, was slated to play Wednesday afternoon anyway in place of regular catcher Russell Martin who played all 12 innings Tuesday.

The 23-year-old rookie earned his fifth win of the season Friday when he worked a career-best seven innings, allowing four hits, one walk and two runs against the Washington Nationals. He has allowed three earned runs or fewer in six of his past seven starts.

But the focus will be on Upton, who received a rousing ovation when he came to bat Tuesday.

When asked about facing his former team, Upton said. "I've thought about it, but man, it's part of the game," Upton said. "You rarely see it happen in the same series, but I think, as professionals, we know that anything is a possibility. Luckily, it's only for two games and we don't have to play them again."

Preview: Tigers (53-48) at Red Sox (55-43)

Game: 3
Venue: Fenway Park
Date: July 27, 2016 1:35 PM EDT

BOSTON -- As if pitching at Fenway Park for the first time wasn't enough, Michael Fulmer also has the task of guiding the Detroit Tigers to an important sweep of the Boston Red Sox.

The rookie Fulmer (9-2, 2.41 ERA) opposes the Red Sox for the first time in his career Wednesday as the Tigers look to take three straight against one of the majors' premier teams.

"It's nice to know that we've won two out of three, but I'd like to get a little greedy and win three out of three," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said after Tuesday's 9-8 shootout victory.

While Fulmer hasn't pitched at baseball's oldest ballpark, the 23-year-old has done some of his best work on the road this season, going 7-2 with a 2.80 ERA in 11 starts away from Comerica Park.

However, his last start wasn't one of those instances, as Fulmer gave up a career-worst-tying four runs (four earned) on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts in five innings of a no-decision against the Chicago White Sox.

That bumpy start followed a solid stretch in which Fulmer hadn't surrendered more than two runs in 10 consecutive starts.

Fulmer has been a breath of fresh air for Detroit (53-48), which sits 5 1/2 games out of first place behind American League Central-leading Cleveland.

The Tigers are also only 3 1/2 back in the AL wild-card chase. Boston (55-43) holds one of those two coveted spots, trailing Toronto by 1/2 a game for the top wild-card spot.

The Red Sox turn to young southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez (2-4, 6.70 ERA) in desperate need of a strong performance as they try to reverse a stretch of four losses in five games.

"It is frustrating when you put up that many runs on the board and come away on the wrong side," Boston manager John Farrell said after his team scored nine runs in a loss.

Fortunately for them, Rodriguez has turned in nothing but solid starts in his first two outings back from a stint with Triple-A Pawtucket to fix mechanical issues.

Rodriguez followed up a one-run, seven-inning victory against the Yankees in New York July 16 with a hard-luck loss last Friday.

He surrendered just two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out a season-high eight in 5 1/3 innings, but took the loss in a 2-1 setback against Minnesota.

Rodriguez is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in one career start against the Tigers, striking out six and giving up one run on three hits and a walk over seven innings in Boston's 11-1 rout of Detroit last July 26.

Nick Castellanos is 1-for-3 with a solo home run against Rodriguez. No current Tigers batter has more than one hit off of Rodriguez, with Mike Aviles and James McCann also getting knocks against him.

Preview: Rays (38-61) at Dodgers (57-44)

Game: 2
Venue: Dodger Stadium
Date: July 27, 2016 3:10 PM EDT

LOS ANGELES -- The Tampa Bay Rays would like to end their West Coast swing on a high note. They've endured plenty of low blows during stops in Oakland and Los Angeles.

Rays lefty Matt Moore (6-7, 4.31 ERA) will face Dodgers righty Brandon McCarthy (2-0, 1.61 ERA) as Tampa Bay tries to snap a four-game skid in the series finale between the two clubs on Wednesday.

Tuesday's 3-2 defeat by the Dodgers was the latest setback in some close games. That loss comes on the heels of three consecutive ones to the A's, two of those coming in walk-off fashion.

Against the Dodgers, the Rays got a solid outing from Chris Archer. However, Yasmani Grandal's solo home run in the seventh inning was the difference.

"(Grandal) has been unbelievable," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "He's obviously swinging the bat a lot better. He's having better at-bats. Again, the big homer tonight. And behind the plate he's been great."

Grandal's blast was one of the few blemishes on Archer, who Rays manager Kevin Cash believed had his best stuff.

"It was a good outing but we lost the game, so it's hard to look at it from a personal standpoint on how well I did whenever there's some things I could have done better obviously," said Archer, who has gone six or more innings in 11 of his last 12 starts. "I want to fill the strike zone but I want to win more. That's the only thing I'm really thinking about now.

"Yeah, I pitched well, and we played great baseball but I wish I could have done a little better to win."

Los Angeles got a stronger performance from Norris, who blanked the Rays for 6 1/3 innings, striking out six and allowing just two hits with two walks (one intentional). Norris (6-9) also recorded his 1,000th strikeout during the win, striking out Kevin Kiermaier in the fourth.

"It's just a testament of how hard I've worked in my career, and this isn't easy for any of us, I promise you," said Norris, who is 3-2 with a 4.40 ERA in six games with the Dodgers since coming over in a trade with the Atlanta Braves.

Although the two clubs split a two-game series at Tropicana Field in Tampa on May 3-4, the Rays are still looking for their first win at Dodger Stadium. They were swept in a three-game set in August 2013, the only other time they've played here.

The Rays have played regular-season games in 41 parks, but Dodger Stadium is the only one they've failed to capture a win. Overall, they are 4-8 all-time against Los Angeles.

The Rays also have never homered here either. They might have trouble doing so against McCarthy, who has pitched well since returning from Tommy John surgery. McCarthy last faced the Rays on Sept. 17, 2014 as a member of the Yankees, allowing two runs on four hits in seven innings and earning the win in the Yankees' 3-2 victory. He struck out four and walked one on 91 pitches. In 12 career appearances (11 starts) against Tampa Bay, McCarthy has a 2.88 ERA with 52 strikeouts against 19 walks.

Moore has gone at least six innings in nine straight starts, the longest run of his career. However, he served up seven runs in 4 1/3 innings on May 3 in a 10-5 win by Los Angeles.

Preview: Reds (39-61) at Giants (59-41)

Game: 3
Venue: AT&T Park
Date: July 27, 2016 3:45 PM EDT

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- The series finale between the Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants on Wednesday pits one starting pitcher hoping to extend his recent success against one coveting more run support.

Cincinnati right-hander Dan Straily (5-6, 4.01 ERA) will make his first career appearance at AT&T Park. He enters riding a string of three consecutive quality starts, and he hopes to help the visitors capture the three-game series.

San Francisco ace Madison Bumgarner (10-5, 2.14 ERA) has similar impressive recent numbers (1.93 ERA over four starts), but is only 1-1 in that time because his teammates has scored only nine runs during that stretch.

The Reds (39-61) sit in last place in the National League Central, while the Giants (59-41) are atop the NL West. However, San Francisco is still trying to escape a post-All-Star break slump. With a 9-7 victory on Tuesday, the Giants won for only the second time in 10 games, and they hope to carry momentum into Wednesday's finale.

"We're still in July here," San Francisco right fielder Mac Williamson said. "We've still got all of August, all of September and a couple days in October. A lot can go down between now and then. We just need to keep our heads down, keep grinding away and playing. We can't look too far ahead. You can get in trouble. ...

"We play our game, do what we can do. We can only control on what we can do on the field and in this clubhouse, so that's what we're focused on."

Giants pitcher Matt Cain, who homered and got the win Tuesday, added, "We know the situation that was going on. We just need to keep building. We had a couple good games (and some) tough losses since the break. You're going to hit those patches, but just find a way to get out of them."

Opponents are hitting only .213 against Straily this year. In his career against the Giants, he is 2-0 with a 2.92 ERA in two starts. Straily threw 6 1/3 innings of three-run ball in a 7-4 win over San Francisco on May 4 in Cincinnati.

Straily allowed two runs on five hits and struck out eight over six innings during the Reds' 6-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in his last start on Friday. Cincinnati won three of Straily's past four starts.

Bumgarner is 3-1 with a 2.40 ERA in his last four starts against the Reds, though he hasn't faced them this year. He is 3-3 with a 4.33 ERA in seven outings against Cincinnati overall.

The Giants have won 13 of the left-hander's 21 starts this season. They came up short in his last outing, falling 3-2 to the Yankees in New York after Bumgarner allowed two runs in seven innings on Friday.

As a staff, San Francisco would like to stop allowing the long ball. Cincinnati struck for four more home runs Tuesday. The Giants have allowed 23 home runs in the 10 games since the break, 18 surrendered by starters.

"Some guys and some teams are just hitting home runs," Cain said. "We've just got to do a better job pitching to the end of the bat and the hands a bit more. It just seems like some guys are capitalizing on the long ball."

Preview: Mariners (51-48) at Pirates (51-48)

Game: 2
Venue: PNC Park
Date: July 26, 2016 7:05 PM EDT

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates remain in contention for a playoff spot, but not without continued uncertainty regarding their rotation.
Right-hander Gerrit Cole (5-6, 2.99 ERA) will try to get back to .500, far below what the Pirates expected from him, on Wednesday when Pittsburgh closes out a two-game series with the Seattle Mariners.
After a day off, the Pirates' scheduled starter for Friday at Milwaukee is TBD -- a fellow who has gotten quite a bit of face time on the Pittsburgh schedule of upcoming starters.
The Pirates are dealing with a shoulder injury to promising young starter Tyler Glasnow and less-than-stellar results from Cole and Francisco Liriano, the latter two expected to anchor the rotation. The team is being cautious with another rookie, Jameson Taillon, although it looks as if he might be sticking in the rotation.
Jonathan Niese, Juan Nicasio and now Jeff Locke have pitched their way into the bullpen, although Locke -- who made his first relief appearance Tuesday, allowing a hit but no runs in two innings -- for now is expected to miss just one start.
Liriano looked to be breaking out of a funk when he struck out 13 batters Thursday in a 5-3 win over the Brewers. On Tuesday, though, he reverted to early-season form, struggling with his control and allowing seven runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings in a 7-4 loss to Seattle.
So it is Cole's turn to try to give the Pirates another in a series of what have seemed to be turnaround performances, although many of the previous ones have not stuck.
On Saturday, Cole took the loss as Pittsburgh fell 4-0 to the Philadelphia Phillies, but he was encouraged about his outing, his second since coming off of the disabled list. He missed a month due to a right triceps strain.
"It was a good step in the right direction," he said after giving up one run on six hits over six innings. He struck out seven and walked one.
"I thought there were a lot of pitches that were thrown really well that they couldn't pick up. It's good to see stuff like that. Hopefully, we can build on it."
Cole's opponent Wednesday will be James Paxton (3-4, 4.18 ERA). The Seattle left-hander will start against Pittsburgh for the first time in his career.
Paxton ended a run of three starts without a win Saturday when he pitched seven innings in a 2-1 victory at Toronto. He allowed the lone Blue Jays run on three hits. His nine strikeouts were one shy of his season best.
"I know he and (pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr.) have been working on a couple of things, and it certainly was evident with his ability to spin it," manager Scott Servais said of Paxton. "That was the best curveball he's had all year."
It was an adjustment Paxton took to happily.
"I was creeping down a little bit and getting too sidearm, getting on the side of the ball," he said. "It wasn't allowing me to get on top of the curveball. Bringing my arm up a little bit more has allowed me to get on top of that curveball."
The relief crew behind Paxton on Wednesday might include the newest member of the Seattle pitching staff.
After Tuesday's game, the Mariners announced they acquired reliever Drew Storen and cash considerations from Toronto for pitcher Joaquin Benoit. Storen, 28, is 1-3 with a 6.21 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 38 relief appearances with the Blue Jays, who designated him for assignment Sunday.
In his first six major league seasons, all with Washington, he was 21-13 with 95 saves and a 3.02 ERA.
"Obviously, this has not been Drew's best season, but he is closely linked to a run of great success pitching in the back end of very good bullpens," Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said in a statement. "Hopefully, this serves as a change of scenery and over the next two months we can get him back on track.
