NHL roundup: Kings crown Maple Leafs
By The Sports Xchange

TORONTO -- Jeff Carter scored two goals, Peter Budaj earned his second straight shutout and the Los Angeles Kings defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 7-0 on Tuesday night.
Dustin Brown, Tanner Pearson, Tyler Toffoli, Kyle Clifford and Dwight King also scored for the Kings. Toffoli also had an assist while Derek Forbort recorded three assists.
Budaj, who was starting his 10th consecutive game, made 19 saves as the Kings smothered the Maple Leafs' offense. Budaj also got the shutout Saturday in a 5-0 victory over the Calgary Flames. He has two shutouts this season and 13 in his career.
Frederik Andersen stopped 22 of 26 shots in the Maple Leafs' goal before being replaced during the second period by Jhonas Enroth, who stopped 14 of 17 shots.

Sharks 3, Capitals 0
WASHINGTON -- Joe Thornton had a goal and an assist, and Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Brent Burns each scored once as San Jose snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory over Washington.
Goalie Martin Jones finished with 24 saves.
San Jose ended the Capitals five-game winning streak. The Capitals were blanked for the first time this season.

Canucks 5, Rangers 3
NEW YORK -- Loui Eriksson and Alexandre Burrows scored their first goals of the season to help Vancouver snap a nine-game losing streak with a victory against New York at Madison Square Garden.
Burrows added an empty-net goal with 3:06 remaining.
Henrik Sedin and Sven Baertschi also scored for the Canucks. Goaltender Jakob Markstrom made 23 saves.
Rick Nash, Pavel Buchnevich and Mike Zibanejad -- with 58.1 seconds remaining -- scored for the Rangers. Goaltender Antti Raanta stopped 20 of 22 shots.

Penguins 4, Oilers 3
PITTSBURGH -- Conor Sheary scored his second goal of the game with 1:42 remaining, and Pittsburgh overcame Edmonton's top-line speed and a two-goal deficit to win.
The Oilers' fleet line of Patrick Maroon, Connor McDavid and Jordan Eberle capitalized on a succession of up-ice rushes to open a 3-1 lead in the second period, but Evgeni Malkin tied it in the third with a one-handed sweep of Phil Kessel's pass to the net.
Eberle scored twice, and McDavid -- in his first head-to-head matchup with Penguins star Sidney Crosby -- set up all three Oilers goals.

Devils 3, Hurricanes 2 (SO)
NEWARK, N.J. -- P.A. Parenteau scored in regulation and converted his shot in a shootout, lifting New Jersey over Carolina at the Prudential Center.
Taylor Hall also scored in the shootout as the Devils earned its second consecutive win. Devils goalie Cory Schneider stopped both Carolina shootout attempts after making 31 saves through regulation and overtime.
Devils rookie right winger Nick Lappin scored his first NHL goal. Jordan Staal and Klas Dahlbeck scored for the Hurricanes.

Red Wings 3, Flyers 2 (SO)
PHILADELPHIA -- It took a shootout goal by Andreas Athanasiou, but Detroit finally won in Philadelphia.
Athanasiou also scored in regulation, as did Tomas Tatar for the Red Wings. Claude Giroux and Sean Couturier scored for the Flyers in regulaton.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Red Wings, who had lost 12 straight regular season games in Philadelphia dating back to Jan. 25, 1997, the first year of the Flyers' 20-year-old arena.

Canadiens 3, Bruins 2
MONTREAL -- Paul Byron scored the game-winner with just over a minute remaining to lift Montreal over Boston at the Bell Centre.
Shea Weber and Alex Galchenyuk also scored for the Canadiens, while Radulov picked up two assists.
Colin Miller and David Pastrnak connected for the Bruins.

Predators 3, Senators 1
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Pekka Rinne stopped 32 shots as Nashville won for just the second time in seven games with a decision over Ottawa at Bridgestone Arena.
James Neal and P.K. Subban scored on the Predators first two shots of the second period to break a scoreless tie and Ryan Ellis added a goal in the third period.
Kyle Turris scored for the Senators.

Coyotes 4, Avalanche 2
DENVER -- Jordan Martinook scored goals in the first minute of the first and third periods, Anthony DeAngelo scored in his NHL debut and Arizona beat Colorado.
Max Domi had a goal and an assist and Louis Domingue had 25 saves for the Coyotes. Anthony Duclair and Radim Vrbata had two assists each.
Nathan MacKinnon and Rene Bourque scored for Colorado. Calvin Pickard stopped 21 shots for the Avalanche, who lost four of their last five.

Jets 8, Stars 2
WINNIPEG -- Patrik Laine scored his second hat trick of the young season, propelling Winnipeg over Dallas at the MTS Centre.
Mark Scheifele had a four-point night, including two goals, giving him 18 on the season and propelling him into the NHL scoring lead.
Andrew Copp and Marko Dano also scored for the Jets while Patrick Eaves and Tyler Seguin scored for the Stars.

In the Crease - Week 5
By Joe Williams

Streaky Teams

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak

Colorado 2-5 past 7 overall Dallas Under 6-2 past 8
N.Y. Rangers 5-0 past 5 and 8-1 past 9 overall, 6-0 past 6 home Philadelphia Over 6-1 past 7
Toronto 3-0 past 3 overall San Jose Under 8-0-1 past 9

Tropical Depression
The Carolina Hurricanes have yet to win back-to-back games this season. While goal scoring has not been much of an issue, as they have two or more goals in nine of their first 11, offense has tailed off recently. They're averaging just 1.7 goals per game (GPG) over the past three while the defense/goaltending has allowed at least two goals in each of their 11 outings this season. Eddie Lack has been especially poor when given opportunities to start, posting a 3.80 Goals-Against Average (GAA) in his four appearances thus far. The Hurricanes travel to New Jersey Tuesday for the second half of a home-and-home after getting pounded 4-1 in Raleigh Sunday.

Capital Punishment
The Washington Capitals play host to the San Jose Sharks Tuesday night in D.C., and Alexander Ovechkin and company are looking to extend their winning streak to six games. The Capitals are averaging 3.8 GPG during their current five-game win streak, and they are allowing 2.0 GPG during the span. The Sharks enter 1-4 in their past five games on the road, and 1-4 in their past five against teams with a winning record, while the Caps have won 42 of their past 58 at home. However, if Washington is going to push their win streak to six they will need to turn around some ugly history against San Jose. The Sharks have won 11 of their past 12 visits to the nation's capital, while going 22-4-1 in the past 27 meetings in this series. The road team is victorious in six of the past seven. The 'under' has been hot for San Jose lately, going 8-0-1 in their past nine, and the under is 6-2-1 in the past nine meetings in this series in Washington.

Looking Ahead

Wednesday, Oct. 26
The Blackhawks head down to St. Louis to battle the Blues on a light slate Wednesday. These two sides met on the west side of Chicago on opening night, and the Blues came away victorious, 5-2. Chicago has figured out their offense lately, going for three or more goals in six straight games while limiting the opponent to 1.3 GPG during their current six-game win streak. The Blues have won three straight games at home and the 'under' is 4-1 in their past five games in their own building. ... The Ducks travel to Ohio's capital city looking for revenge after dropping a 4-0 decision at home to the Blue Jackets Oct. 28. Columbus has been stout lately, picking up points in seven of their past eight games (5-1-2). They enter on a three-game win streak at home, including a 10-0 whitewashing of the NHL-leading Canadiens Nov. 4.

Thursday, Oct. 27
The Predators host the Blues in Music City, and this rivalry has been a bit one-sided in recent seasons. Dating back to Feb. 23, 2012, St. Louis is an impressive 15-4 in the past 19 meetings, including 7-3 in their past 10 trips to Nashville. Early on in this series, the 'under' was the play, but lately we have seen a lot of fireworks between the two sides. The 'over' is 7-3-3 in the past 13 meetings. ... The Flames host the Stars in the first meeting between these teams this season. The Flames are 3-1-1 in the past five meetings with the Stars, and each of the past two meetings at the Saddledome have been determined in a shootout, while each of the past three meetings in Calgary have been one-goal games.

Friday, Oct. 28
The Stars continue their road trip in Northern Alberta against the high-flying Oilers. This series has been anything but high-scoring lately, though, with the 'under' going 12-4-2 in the past 18 meetings dating back to Jan. 26, 2011, including 6-1-2 in the past nine meetings in Edmonton. The 'under' has cashed in four straight on home ice for the Oilers in their new building heading into the new week. ... Colorado hosts Winnipeg for the second time this season. The first matchup Oct. 28 resulted in a 1-0 win by the Jets, and two of the past three games for the Avalanche at home have had a 1-0 score (one win, one loss). Five of the past seven meetings in this series have resulted in an 'under' play. Winnipeg enters Friday's game on a three-game win streak in the series, including each of the past two in Denver.

Preview: Blackhawks (9-3) at Blues (7-4)

Date: November 09, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

ST. LOUIS -- After a strong bounce-back game following two sub-par efforts, Jake Allen will be back in goal Wednesday night for the St. Louis Blues in a key Central Division game against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Allen needed to play well in his last game on Sunday night against Colorado after allowing a combined nine goals in regulation losses last week on the road against the New York Rangers and Dallas Stars.

Given a little more breathing room when the offense snapped out of its scoring slump with five goals, Allen was back to his old form, allowing only one goal -- off a deflection through traffic -- in a 5-1 win over the Avalanche.

Allen stopped 22 shots and helped keep the Avalanche scoreless on six power-play opportunities, the kind of effort the Blues expected when they made their number one goalie this year with the offseason trade of Brian Elliott to Calgary and signed Allen to a four-year contract extension.

The win followed an overtime victory over Columbus on Saturday night behind backup goalie Carter Hutton and gave the Blues consecutive wins for the first time since they opened the season with a three-game winning streak.

"To string together two wins was important for us not just for the points but for the morale and momentum and confidence in this group," Allen said.

Now the Blues will be looking to build on that effort against the Blackhawks, who lead the Central Division with three more points than the Blues.

The Blues will make one lineup change, with Petteri Lindbohm, recalled from Chicago of the American Hockey League, replacing defenseman Joel Edmundson, who was played on injured reserve on Monday because of an upper-body injury.

The Blackhawks also come into Wednesday night's game as one of the hottest teams in the league, having won their last six games, including beating Dallas in overtime in their most recent game on Sunday night.

Part of their success can be attributed to coach Joel Quenneville's decision to put his top two forwards, center Jonathan Toews and right winger Patrick Kane, on the same line for the first time since the 2009-2010 season.

The Blackhawks have gone 6-0 since Toews and Kane were reunited. Toews did not have a goal and just two assists in the team's first seven games but has four goals and four assists during the winning streak. Kane has scored three goals and added five assists since the pair began playing together.

"If our line can set the tone, or create more, have more shifts in their end, it's going to be good for our team in the long run," Kane told the Chicago Sun-Times. "It could be a great thing for our team, and one of those things that you didn't really expect to happen."

Corey Crawford is expected to start in goal for the Blackhawks. He has won his last three games, allowing a combined three goals.

Preview: Ducks (6-5) at Blue Jackets (5-3)

Date: November 09, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Columbus Blue Jackets (5-3-2) and Anaheim Ducks (6-5-2) close out their season series Wednesday at Nationwide Arena, but Columbus will be missing a mainstay on defense.

Seth Jones was placed on injured reserve Monday after sustaining a hairline fracture on the top of his right foot in Saturday's game at St. Louis.

"I'm very disappointed for him," Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella told the Columbus Dispatch. "Injuries are part of this game. It's huge a loss for us; I'm not going to say it isn't. But this happens.

"It's for him that it bothers me the most because I think he has really ... his mental approach has improved much from the first time I met him last year to where he is right now."

Jones leads all Blue Jackets players with 24:14 in average ice time per game. With the team carrying eight defensemen on the roster, a call-up is unlikely.

Zach Werenski, Jones' defensive partner, has two goals and eight assists for the season. He'll likely be paired with David Savard on Wednesday.

Less than two weeks ago, the Blue Jackets handed the Ducks a 4-0 loss at the Honda Center to close out their West Coast road trip. Since that game, Columbus is 3-0-1 and Anaheim 3-2-0.

Tortorella was unhappy with the effort of some of his top players in Saturday's 2-1 overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues. An indication of this was the line-shuffling in practice ahead of Wednesday'sgame.

Left wing Brandon Saad was moved to the fourth line, while left wing Scott Hartnell was elevated to the second line in Saad's place.

After a lengthy contract squabble, Ducks defenseman Hampus Lindholm joined the team for practice Tuesday in Columbus. The 22-year old signed a six-year, $31.5 million deal at the end of October, and has missed 13 games.

"It was a really good feeling," Lindholm told the Los Angeles Times. "I'm just happy to get back on the ice, and hopefully I'll be playing some hockey (soon)."

He was asked if he could play as soon as Wednesday against the Blue Jackets and said: "Whenever they want to put me in, I'm ready. I feel comfortable."

Last season with Anaheim, he averaged 22 minutes of ice time during the regular season and finished with 10 goals and 18 assists. He had been practicing with Rogle BK of the Swedish Hockey League during the contract stalemate.

"We've got to get him up to game speed as quickly as possible," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle told the team's website. "The things we did today were pushing, shoving, defending and shooting. Probably the things he did the least of during his practice time (with Rogle).

"We'll see what tomorrow brings and make a decision based upon how he feels and what he says. He says he's ready to play. Ultimately, he'll be the one who decides if he's ready to play or not."

Preview: Senators (7-5) at Sabres (5-5)

Date: November 09, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Buffalo Sabres goalie Robin Lehner took care of business against his former team already once this season and will look to do so again when the Ottawa Senators come to town Wednesday night.

Lehner is hitting his stride after missing one week earlier this season due to illness. In the 2-1 victory over Ottawa on Saturday, he was the clear standout with 32 saves -- including several highlight-reel stops.

"He was the one guy that, for the full 60 minutes, he gave it his all and was really a big reason why we won that game," Sabres forward Sam Reinhart said after Buffalo's Saturday win over Ottawa, according to the Sabres' team website.

"He's a battler," Sabres forward Kyle Okposo said following the win, according to the Sabres' website. "Early in the season, you could see that his game was coming. He made some really good stops and the last few games that he's played, he's just been battling for us and making big saves. He made so many huge saves and his athleticism is really good. It's allowing him to make some of those saves."

Lehner's best stop in that game came with 5:06 remaining in the first period. The goalie charged out of the net and as Jean-Gabriel Pageau went wide to his left, Lehner sprawled on the ice and extended his arm to stop the puck with his blocker.

The Sabres sent a first-round pick to the Senators to acquire Lehner last summer. In nine games, the goaltender has a record of 4-4-1 and a save percentage of .925.

Buffalo will be looking for a better team performance compared to their last outing. Following the win over Ottawa on Saturday, the Sabres had a clunker against the Boston Bruins on Monday and lost 4-0.

"We've got to keep our cool no matter what's going on out there," Sabres captain Brian Gionta said, according to the Sabres' website. Buffalo struggled with penalties in the loss to Boston. You've got to stay composed, whether you're mad about it or not or you don't agree. We've got to keep our composure. That's what happens. The game gets running from you. You start reeling, you start getting frustrated and you get away from what you need to do to get back in the game."

The Senators are coming off 3-1 loss to Nashville on Tuesday night.

Goalie Craig Anderson has flourished between the pipes for Ottawa while at the same time coping with the news that his wife, Nicholle, had recently been diagnosed with cancer.

"He's a strong person -- him and Nicholle both, and their two boys," Senators defenseman Mark Borowiecki said, according to the Ottawa Citizen. "I can't even imagine some of the emotions that he's feeling and what him and his family have to go through on a day-to-day basis. For him to show the kind of commitment he's not only shown to our team, but to his wife, it's pretty special to see. It's a testament to him as a person."

NBA roundup: Hawks hand Cavs first loss
By The Sports Xchange

CLEVELAND -- Dennis Schroder scored a career-high 28 points and Kent Bazemore added 25 in the Atlanta Hawks' 110-106 win against Cleveland on Tuesday, ending an 11-game losing streak to the Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers (6-1) became the last team in the league to lose this season.
Paul Millsap scored 21 points and Dwight Howard grabbed 17 rebounds for the Hawks (5-2) despite leaving briefly in the first quarter to get four stitches in his upper lip.
Kyrie Irving scored 29 points, LeBron James had 23 points, nine rebounds and five assists and Love added 24 points and 12 rebounds for Cleveland, but the Cavaliers' 31 missed 3-pointers were too much to overcome.

Grizzlies 108, Nuggets 107
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Marc Gasol hit a short shot in the lane as time expired to lift Memphis past Denver.
Emmanuel Mudiay, who scored a game-high 23 points, put the Nuggets on top with 7.9 seconds left. Trailing 106-105, Denver trapped Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley on an inbounds play. Gary Harris stole the ball and passed to Mudiay, who finished with a running dunk. The teams then exchanged turnovers in the final seconds.
Vince Carter (20 points, five assists off the bench) lobbed the ball from the baseline on the inbounds play to Gasol for the winning shot. Gasol finished with 19 points and six assists. Danilo Gallinari paced Denver with 21 points.

Nets 119, Timberwolves 100
NEW YORK -- Brook Lopez scored 26 points, and Brooklyn made enough plays down the stretch for a victory over Minnesota.
Trevor Booker added 15 points for the Nets, who shot 55 percent and were 12 of 33 from 3-point range. Sean Kilpatrick contributed 14 points, while Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Bojan Bogdanovic had 13 apiece.
Andrew Wiggins scored a career-high 36 points for Minnesota. Karl-Anthony Towns scored 19 of his 21 points in the first half and was saddled with foul trouble after getting his fourth early in the final period.

Mavericks 109, Lakers 97
LOS ANGELES -- Harrison Barnes scored 31 points, and Dallas defeated Los Angeles at Staples Center.
Barnes connected on 11 of 18 shots from the floor as the Mavericks beat the Lakers for the 11th consecutive time.
Seth Curry came off the bench to score a career-high 23 points for Dallas, while J.J. Barea added 18 points, eight assists and six rebounds.
Reserve guard Jordan Clarkson led the Lakers with 22 points. Nick Young, who scored Los Angeles' initial 13 points, had 18 of his 20 points in the first half.

Trail Blazers 124, Suns 121
PORTLAND, Ore -- Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum combined for 71 points as Portland outlasted Phoenix at the Moda Center.
Lillard scored 22 of his 38 points in the fourth quarter and McCollum had 18 of his 33 points in the first quarter for the Trail Blazers, who won their third straight game.
Eric Bledsoe scored 31 points and Devin Booker added 23 for the Suns.

Kings 102, Pelicans 94
SACRAMENTO -- DeMarcus Cousins scored 28 points and Sacramento pull away for victory over New Orleans at Golden 1 Center.
Rudy Gay had 21 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Kings, as they won their second straight and ended a six-game skid against the Pelicans. Sacramento beat New Orleans for the first time since Nov. 25, 2014.
Anthony Davis finished with 34 points and eight rebounds for the Pelicans. He has scored at least 30 points five times already this season.

NBA betting road map: Unbeaten Cavs burning money for backers
By BIG AL MCMORDIE

The biggest surprise of the young NBA season would have to be the play of the Los Angeles Clippers. Yes, the Clips were considered by many to be the 4th best team in the NBA (behind Golden State, San Antonio and Cleveland). But virtually no one thought LA would be a championship contender. Its blowout win at San Antonio on Saturday served notice that it is a real threat to come out of the West. Let's take a look at some other goings-on in the NBA.

Al McMordie is back with the latest edition of his weekly betting roadmap series, to take a look at the betting landscape in the upcoming week in the NBA.

Spread Watch

The defending NBA Champion Cleveland Cavaliers are off to a perfect 6-0 start. But in Vegas, they've been less than perfect, as they're just 2-4 ATS, including 0-4 their last four games. And dating back to the preseason, they're on a 2-7 ATS run.

Frankly, being overvalued might be a continuing theme for Cleveland this season.

Certainly, it wouldn't be the first time a team won a title, and then burned money in the next regular season. This week, Cleveland will host Atlanta on Tuesday and Charlotte on Sunday, with a road game against Washington sandwiched in between. The match-up against the Hawks looks like another potential pointspread defeat for LeBron James & Co. The past two Playoffs, Atlanta was swept four games to none by the Cavaliers. However, NBA favorites off a straight-up win have been dreadful since 1991 when playing a team they ousted in the previous season's playoffs, as they've gone just 57-76-1 ATS.

I'll take Atlanta in this road underdog role on Tuesday.

Total Watch

The San Antonio Spurs were annihilated, 116-92, on Saturday by the Los Angeles Clippers. It not only was the 2nd straight home loss for San Antone (a team which started 40-0 at home last year), but it was also the most points (73) ever allowed by a Gregg Popovich-coached team in the first half of a game.

Last season, San Antonio's defense was among the best defenses in NBA history, as it had a defensive efficiency rating of 99.5. This season, its defensive rating has climbed to 103.8, which places it 11th in the NBA. And the Spurs now gone 'over' the total in their last four games.

But help is on the way soon, as SG Danny Green will make his debut as early as this week. Last season, Green ranked No. 1 among shooting guards in ESPN's Real Plus-Minus defensive rating. But Green won't be back for Wednesday's game vs Houston, which ranks among the top 5 in defensive efficiency. And the Spurs' last four (and six of the last seven) home games vs. Houston have gone 'over' the total. Wednesday's game should, as well.

Injury Watch

Until Sunday night's SU/ATS overtime victory vs. the Bucks, the Dallas Mavericks had yet to win, as they were 0-5 straight-up (and 1-4 ATS) through their first five games. And part of the problem is that future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki has not been on the court for many minutes. Nowitzki did play in the first half this past Friday vs. Portland, but his Achilles' tendon injury flared up, so he sat in the 2nd half, and will miss at least another week.

This is real bad news for a Mavericks franchise which hasn't had a losing season since 1999-2000. However, a silver lining is that Dallas' schedule is light this week, with just two road games vs. the Lakers and Golden State.

Certainly, the Mavericks wouldn't be an odds-on favorite to win at Golden State, even with Nowitzki. But, now, the game against L.A. will even be difficult (notwithstanding Dallas' 10 straight wins in the series), given how (surprisingly) well the Lakers are playing. The Lakers are 4-3 SU and 6-1 ATS, and rank in the upper half in Adjusted Net Rating. But Dallas has over-performed (7-2 ATS) without Nowitzki in the lineup the past two seasons, so it's still wise to tread lightly.

Schedule Watch

The New Orleans Pelicans (along with Dallas and Philly) are one of the league's three winless teams. The absence of several key players (Jrue Holiday, Tyreke Evans and Quincy Pondexter) is the main reason. But poor play has been equally to blame.

Last Friday, New Orleans had ample opportunity to close out the Suns -- both in regulation and overtime -- but couldn't get a defensive stop. Phoenix survived to win 112-111, and that was the 2nd straight overtime defeat for New Orleans. And the Pelicans surely didn't help matters by misfiring on 13 of 28 free throws.

This Thursday, New Orleans will have revenge on its mind when it travels to Milwaukee to take on the Bucks. Last week, Milwaukee went into the Smoothie King Center, and upset New Orleans, 117-113. But NBA teams have cashed 64% since 1990 early in the season (Game 10 or earlier) when playing with revenge from an upset loss. I look for the Pels to upset Milwaukee.

Preview: Timberwolves (1-5) at Magic (3-4)

Date: November 09, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

February's All-Star Weekend in New Orleans is a long way away. Yet when it comes to Aaron Gordon and Zach LaVine, everyone is already thinking about it and what might come. The two players who stole the show -- stole the whole All-Star Weekend in Toronto -- are still making their victory laps it seems.

Neither LaVine nor Gordon is ready to commit to the Slam Dunk Contest in February. But the two-time dunk champion and his greatest challenger will meet on the court for the first time since that Saturday in Toronto when the Minnesota Timberwolves (1-5) visit the Orlando Magic (3-4) at Amway Center on Wednesday.

The two players have been tied together more since that epic back-and-forth dunk contest. They ended up at promotional stops together in China during the offseason. They were part of a Nike commercial together, where naturally they were throwing each other alley-oops.

"We're both very casual, relaxed dudes," Gordon said after practice Tuesday. "We chop it up, joke about it and laugh about it. We both know we put on a show."

Gordon and LaVine indeed put on a show with their back-and-forth display of incredible athleticism that made the dunk contest the talk of the entire weekend. Many people believed Gordon should have won the contest. Even Zach LaVine has said he thought they should split the trophy.

The two are still creating highlights on a nightly basis. Gordon busted out a 360 dunk in-game last week at Philadelphia and has some hair-raising dunks and alley-oops already.

But the question for these two young players next is how do they turn their dunk contest success into actual production on the court?

LaVine so far has looked like he is beginning to find his fit. Now relieved of Minnesota's point guard experiment, LaVine is averaging 17.7 points per game and is shooting 41.7 percent from beyond the arc.

He scored 31 points in a game against the Memphis Grizzlies last week and had 17 points in the Timberwolves' 119-110 loss in Brooklyn on Tuesday.

"I think each year he's gotten better," coach Tom Thibodeau told Derek James of ESPN 1500 in Minneapolis following the win over the Grizzlies last week. "He's comfortable and puts a lot of work into his game. He spends a lot of time shooting. I think he has a much better understanding of the NBA game now and I think there's a lot of room for him to grow, too. I think he can be terrific defensively."

Gordon too has had to evolve his game. He has found that process a little more difficult.

The Magic are testing him out at the small forward position and playing him on the perimeter more. With the increased playing time and role, he is averaging 11.6 points per game and shooting a career-best 36.4 percent from beyond the arc. There are still plenty of hiccups and inefficiencies in the 21-year-old's game.

Both LaVine and Gordon, though, are young. Their insane athleticism is a reminder of that. The two are forever bound in that incredible evening in Toronto.

Now the two are looking to expand their games and help their young team's take the next step closer to the playoffs.

Early hot takes can be dangerous
By Tony Mejia

Statement games have ruled the first few sips of the NBA season.

While not necessarily competitive, the blowouts have been like shots of Espresso, decisively powerful.

The Spurs crushed the Warriors, spoiling Kevin Durant’s regular-season debut at the new Superteam Arena. Instantly, the “Golden State isn’t going to rule basketball” crowd broke out in song and dance.

The Warriors then destroyed Oklahoma City last week, backing KD wholeheartedly in the team-building exercise of making sure Russell Westbrook didn’t leave Oracle happy with himself while wearing his photographer get-up.

Durant caught fire after a slow start and the Thunder were toast. It’s OKC’s only loss of the season through their first seven games, but somehow, the spin on it was that Westbrook is stuck with a bunch of role players. Never mind that it was the same team that had beaten the Clippers in L.A. the previous night, handing them their only loss thus far, but wild exclamations are easy to make this time of year.

So far, the season has been fun, carving out its niche despite a tremendous World Series and football. Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah returned to Chicago and played conquering heroes on the same day the Cubs had their victory parade. Unfortunately for New York, that happens to be the Knicks best effort of the short season. The Bulls are 4-3, showing signs of cohesion and grit while also having put instances on display that why some observers feel their makeup will never work and Fred Hoiberg will wind up being the first coach fired.

It feels like Minnesota’s Karl-Anthony Towns, Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo and Phoenix’s Devin Booker have made the greatest strides, set to earn a new level of stardom. Dirk Nowitzki looks a step slower. Some may say he’s done. Others swear Klay Thompson has forgotten how to shoot since he’s sporting about a 20 percent clip from beyond the arc.

You can make all those statements with a blanket asterisk that it’s far too early to make any real determinations. Instead, all we can do is capitalize on six early trends that will likely shake themselves out, but may be profitable for another few weeks.

Golden State isn’t going to win 63 games, much less 73. This could hold up. Durant’s flurry of 3-pointers against the Thunder produced a 122-96 rout in a performance no one in the league can touch, but that type of output can’t be depended upon. The Warriors lack of rim protection means they’re going to have to outscore teams on a nightly basis, so on nights where the 3-pointer isn’t falling, as was the case against the Lakers on Nov. 4, they’ll be vulnerable. Golden State has started 5-2, but scored 116 or more in four of the wins, a number higher than the NBA-high 112.9 points per game they average.

When they fail to reach that number, the Warriors are 1-2, which could be an issue all season since Zaza Pachulia is struggling to protect the rim and the only guy on the roster who can is named JaVale McGee. Golden State has surrendered a 123-point average in its two defeats and has a few dangerous road games ahead with Denver, Toronto, Boston, Milwaukee and Indiana on tap over the next few weeks. I told you to fade Golden State’s win total and stand by that choice, so I expect a few more eyebrow-raising defeats this month.

Boston can’t defend. The Celtics defensive rating has dipped to last in the league with Al Horford unavailable due to a concussion, and they have allowed 111.8 points per game, currently 28th in the NBA. Only Phoenix and Indiana have been worse. Horford is due back Wednesday, so their ability to defend teams should return to normal. The Celtics are plus-83 with him available and minus-53 without him, so between him and Jae Crowder getting back in the mix, look for the days of Boston giving up 77 points in a half to end. Crowder will be out another week-plus with an ankle injury, but is working to get back for the Warriors visit on Nov. 18. The Wizards, Knicks and Pacers are the next three up between now and next week, so Boston could be vulnerable since all are capable of getting multiple guys going offensively. Brad Stevens’ Celtics have already lost consecutive games and had four separate losing streaks of three games are more last season.

Pau Gasol and LaMarcus Aldridge can’t share the floor. ESPN’s Mark Stein pointed out that the Spurs have been outscored by 25 points in the 113 minutes these two new teammates have been out there at the same time. The sample size is small, but neither has gotten any faster over the years and there are teams capable of significantly exploiting them in the pick-and-roll. San Antonio has played teams like the Clippers, Jazz, Kings, Pelicans and Heat, who happen to have some of the NBA’s bigger, most athletic post threats, so that may be a factor as well. This should shake itself out as the season unfolds and the chemistry between the two improves, especially with Gregg Popovich and his staff on the case. In the short-term, it’s worth keeping an eye on. The Spurs will play the Rockets twice on Wednesday and Saturday, but sandwiched in between will be a meeting with Detroit’s Andre Drummond, the NBA’s top rebounder. Rematches with Sacramento’s DeMarcus Cousins and Miami’s Hassan Whiteside are on tap next week.

Anthony Davis has no help. No denying this one. Despite averaging 30.4 points and 11.9 rebounds per game and opening the season with 95 points in the first two games, the Pelicans are an awful 0-7, joining the 76ers as the lone winless teams remaining. They badly miss point guard Jrue Holiday, who has taken an extended absence to tend to his wife after she underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor. Replacement Tim Frazier is capable offensively, but small, which really limits New Orleans on defense. Ryan Anderson and Eric Gordon are now in Houston, Tyreke Evans remains out, so guys like E’Twaun Moore, Solomon Hill, Langston Galloway and rookie Buddy Hield are filling in. All have holes in their game on the wing, and help isn’t coming any time soon. It’s tough to find yourself fading one of the best players on the planet nightly, but that’s what you should do most of the time until Holiday comes back. They’re 2-5 ATS entering a trip to Sacramento on Tuesday.

Tom Thibodeau won’t transform the Timberwolves overnight. It’s been painfully visible on his face that it hasn’t been a lot of fun watching his young team struggle to get stops and protect the rim. Going in, he knew he wouldn’t have skilled, willing defenders like Noah and Jimmy Butler to build around immediately, but it’s obvious Minnesota’s kids have a lot of work to do to get up to speed. Teams have shot 46 percent against them and have gotten to the line an average of 26 times per game, seventh-highest in the league. Thibs’ concepts are sublime and he’ll mold them into a solid unit, but it hasn’t helped matters nearly that Ricky Rubio got hurt, forcing rookie Kris Dunn into a heightened role. Dunn is going to be excellent and should be a strong defender, but there’s a learning curve ahead. Expect there to be more than a few instances ahead where the tremendously talented Towns, Andrew Wiggins and Zach LaVine wind up losing to inferior competition.

That’s worth keeping in mind since they’ll play two of the Eastern Conference’s worst teams, Brooklyn and Orlando, on the road this week, before opening a four-game home stretch where both L.A. teams, Charlotte and Philadelphia come to town, so they’ll be favored often. Eventually, the Wolves are going to be fine and will probably get it together enough to go on a run that allows them to compete for a playoff spot, so the next few weeks are going to be telling since this team needs to stop the bleeding.

The Wizards and Mavs stink now. While Minnesota’s 1-4 start has been surprising, there are some who feel we should get used to the stumbling that Washington and Dallas have done out of the gate. They’re stuck among the 76ers, Pelicans, Nets and Suns as two of the NBA’s worst teams record-wise through two weeks, but I’m not on board with the opinion that will last. Rick Carlisle and Scott Brooks are talented head coaches who will figure things out and have had obstacles emerge to stunt good starts. The Mavericks have seen Nowitzki limited by illness, Deron Williams dealing with a calf issue and are attempting to get newly acquired Harrison Barnes and Andrew Bogut acclimated. Brooks has had his Wizards relatively whole, but they’ve gone 0-3 on the road and are still looking to put it all together. The Mavs beat the Bucks for their first win before going out on the road for a four-game road swing that spans both coasts over the next week, while the Wizards have the Celtics and Cavs in town, so neither expected resurgence may come soon, but they’ll get things figured out.

Preview: Celtics (3-3) at Wizards (1-5)

Date: November 09, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- The NBA regular season is early but getting late quick for the Washington Wizards, who are struggling defensively and set to face the top two contenders in the Eastern Conference.

That stretch starts with Wednesday's home matchup with the Boston Celtics (3-3) before the reigning champion Cleveland Cavaliers visit two days later. That's a tough task for Washington (1-5), which that has lost two straight after dropping a 114-106 setback against Houston on Monday.

Of course, the Celtics haven't quite clicked yet this season. Boston enters having lost two straight by allowing an average of 125.5 points in that span.

The Rockets sank 17 3-pointers and pulled away from the Wizards with a 12-0 run midway through the fourth quarter fueled by James Harden. Washington ranks 27th in 3-point defense and has lost its way late in each of its setback.

"I thought we came out with good defensive intensity that gave us that early lead," Wizards coach Scott Brooks said. "Then in order to win an NBA basketball game, you have to do it for 48 minutes, and we have not been able to put it together in its entirety. Defensive disposition is the No. 1 thing that you have to continue to focus on. We have talked about it enough and now we have to do it."

The Celtics fell 123-107 to the Denver Nuggets Sunday night in their third straight game without center Al Horford, who remains in the NBA's concussion program.

"He has not advanced in the protocol from what I've been told," Celtics coach Brad Stevens told reporters on Monday. "He has not gotten any deeper than that."

The addition of Horford, a multi-time All-Star, to a team that won 48 games last season had many projecting Boston as the primary threat to Cleveland. Perhaps those high expectations have led to the sideways start. The Celtics are fourth with 110.2 points per game, but rank 28th in scoring defense (111.8).

The Nuggets led 42-23 after the first quarter and shot 52.4 percent from the field.

"We're not as good as we thought we were," Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas told reporters Sunday. "When we don't come out with a sense of urgency, we're not a good team, and that's what happened tonight."

The Wizards started strong against the Rockets, but as was the case in previous losses, faded down the stretch.

"Nobody is happy. Everyone's emotions are a little high," guard Bradley Beal said. "Everybody is mad. We are 1-5. We did not expect it to be like this. We just have to figure it out."

That won't be easy in this matchup. The Celtics won the series 4-0 last season with three victories by at least 20 points.

Beal, Otto Porter and John Wall, who was ejected with 33 seconds left for picking up his second technical foul, each scored at least 20 points in Monday's loss. Washington retooled its bench this past offseason, but have yet to find consistency beyond its starting five.

Preview: Nets (3-4) at Knicks (2-4)

Date: November 09, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Two defensively challenged teams square off Wednesday in the first installment this season for basketball supremacy in New York.

The Brooklyn Nets (3-4) make a quick jaunt across the East River to face the New York Knicks (2-4) in the first of four meetings between the Atlantic Division rivals.

The Knicks have allowed at least 30 points or more in 10 of the 24 quarters this season, including a season-high 36 in the fourth quarter of a 114-109 loss at home to Utah on Sunday. New York was leading at the half 54-49.

Teams are shooting 46.4 percent against the Knicks, ranking them 27th. Their 3-point defense is ranked 28th and their defensive rebounding percentage is the lowest among the 32 teams.

The Knicks are 27th in the league in defensive scoring, allowing 109.8 points a game. Their defensive rating, which is based on points allowed per 100 possessions, is last in the league.

The Nets are coming off a 119-110 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday. They are allowing 107 points per game, placing them 21st in the league. Their defensive rating is 19th in the league.

To hopefully help offset some of the Knicks defensive woes, coach Jeff Hornacek has put assistant Kurt Rambis in charge of the defense. Rambis was the interim coach during the second half of last season after Derek Fisher was fired.

"It could've been anybody," Hornacek told the New York Post of the change. "It could've been Jerry (Sichting). It could've been Corey (Gaines). We all talk as a coaching staff about the same things. Kurt had some of these guys last year, so just thought it was better to put him in there."

The Knicks' favored offense is the much ballyhooed triangle, which they also practice to defend. The problem is the majority of the NBA plays a pick-and-roll offense, which the Knicks are having problems defending against.

"I mean, that's the way that the game of basketball is being played these days, regardless of whether we want to admit to it or not," Carmelo Anthony told Northjersey.com.

Anthony leads the Knicks in scoring at 22.8 points per game.

"I wouldn't say I'm frustrated," Anthony said. "There's some things we have to get better at, some things that we have to do better. And we have to figure that part out. We have to work at it. ... I wouldn't be frustrated at this point in the season because we still have some work to do."

To compound the Nets' defensive shortcomings, coach Kenny Atkinson has been forced to play a short-handed backcourt. Atkinson said he has not decided if guard Jeremy Lin, who is out with a strained left hamstring, will travel on the upcoming road trip.

Veteran Randy Foye's return from a hamstring injury will bolster the defense, although his minutes will be limited. Foye saw 14 minutes of action Tuesday.

Backup guard Greivis Vasquez is also sidelined, forcing Atkinson to use rookie Isaiah Whitehead and combo-guard Sean Kilpatrick, who ranks second on the team in scoring and seems to have found stability with his third team in two seasons.

"I think Sean (Kilpatrick) can definitely play the point," Atkinson told the New York Post. "He's done it. He handles pick-and-roll, but we don't want to get Sean too out of his role. "He's done a fantastic job scoring off the bench for us."

Atkinson also said the Nets will decide Wednesday if center Brook Lopez plays at New York on the second end of a back-to-back. Lopez led the Nets with 26 points against Minnesota. He sat out the second part of a back-to-back Oct. 28 in Milwaukee.

Preview: Jazz (5-3) at Hornets (5-1)

Date: November 09, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Only a few games into the season, the Utah Jazz are being attacked ruthlessly by the injury bug. And it's taking down one starter after another.

First, it was Gordon Hayward and Derrick Favors. Hayward broke his finger and missed six games to open the season. Favors sat out the opener and played under a minutes restriction in subsequent games while dealing with knee and IT band soreness.

Hayward and Favors are back, but Boris Diaw and George Hill are sidelined. Diaw has missed five games with a right leg contusion and Hill sat out Utah's 104-89 victory over Philadelphia on Monday night while recovering from a sprained thumb he injured against New York a day earlier.

Still, the Jazz are finding a way to survive and thrive on their five-game road trip. Utah beat the Knicks and the Sixers on back-to-back nights and hope to make it three straight when they face the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday night.

"It speaks to our inner drive a little bit, because we have some expectations for ourselves this year," Hayward said following the win over the Sixers. "You've got to take care of these games."

Hayward certainly hasn't been lacking drive since his return. He has averaged 24.0 points during the road trip after making his season debut against the Knicks. The Jazz forward hasn't been alone in his efforts.

Favors had his best game to date this season at Philadelphia. He finished with season highs of 16 points and 14 rebounds and added three blocked shots. It has taken a while, but Favors is starting to look like himself on the court again.

"I'm still not 100 percent yet, but I'm getting there," Favors said. "I'm getting comfortable out there, starting to get my rhythm back, starting to get my explosiveness back."

Charlotte comes into Wednesday's game with plenty of positive momentum. The Hornets started fast in a 122-100 victory over Indiana. They unloaded 43 points in the first quarter after scoring on their first 12 possessions.

It marks the third consecutive win for Charlotte (5-1) and has helped the team get off to its best start in franchise history.

"You have to like what we can become," Hornets coach Steve Clifford said. "It's still hard for me to get a definitive idea of how good this team can be, because we haven't had our full team together, but I love what we're doing. I love this team. I love where we are. I love our attitude and the way we practice."

Kemba Walker is a major driving force behind Charlotte's early success. Walker ranks 11th among NBA players in scoring, averaging 24.3 points per game. He is shooting a career-best 49 percent from the field and a career-best 48.7 percent from 3-point range.

The Hornets are also creating success by playing smart basketball. Charlotte enters Wednesday's game against Utah averaging 11.3 turnovers per game -- the fewest of any NBA team.

Charlotte split the season series each of the last two seasons with Utah, winning both games at home.

Grand Salami - November

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

Preview: Bulls (4-3) at Hawks (5-2)

Date: November 09, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

ATLANTA -- The Chicago Bulls hope their ability to get off to a good start can help them break a four-game losing streak against the Atlanta Hawks when the clubs meet Wednesday at Philips Arena.

The Bulls (4-3) followed the quick-start recipe on Monday in a 112-80 win over Orlando and will try to carry that philosophy over against a Hawks team that swept four games from them last season.

"Need to get off to a good start," Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said. "When we do that, we generally play a good game."

Chicago used a 15-0 run to take control of the game against Orlando and outscored the Magic 27-11 in the third quarter to put the game away. The Bulls got 20 points from Jimmy Butler in the win, which broke a three-game losing streak.

Atlanta (5-2) is coming off a 110-106 road win against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday. The Hawks had three players top 20 points: point guard Dennis Schroder with 28, guard Kent Bazemore with 25 and forward Paul Millsap with 21.

The 28 points was a career high for Schroder, who signed a four-year, $70 million contract extension just prior to the season opener. Schroder also had six assists against the Cavs.

"Dennis talks a lot of trash, but (Tuesday) he didn't say anything," center Dwight Howard said. "He went and attacked the basket and we got a good win."

Howard scored only seven points, breaking a streak of four straight double-doubles. But he had 17 rebounds and prevented Cleveland's Tristan Thompson from getting any inside points. Howard has adapted to his role as a defensive stopper and has shown he isn't afraid to mix it up. He took a shot on Tuesday that required four stitches on his lip.

"My job is to enforce the paint and as long as we get a win, it doesn't matter how much I score," Howard said. "My job is to make sure they don't get but one shot at a time. That will help our team win."

Chicago's defense was noticeably better against the Magic. The Bulls allowed a season-low 80 points and stopped a three-game stretch that had seen them allow 107 or more points in each game.

"We're not going to win too many ball games if our defense is not doing what it did," guard Dwyane Wade said.

Wade will be making his Chicago debut in Atlanta. He has a career average of 22.1 points and 5.8 assists in 38 games against the Hawks when he played for Miami.

Wade is joined in the starting lineup by point guard Rajon Rondo, center Robin Lopez and forwards Taj Gibson and Butler. The Bulls have five players who average in double figures, led by Butler (21.0), Wade (16.9) and Gibson 12.1).

The Hawks won all four meetings against the Bulls last season for the first time since 2008-09. But Jeff Teague, who led the team in scoring in two wins, and Al Horford, the top scorer in another game, are both playing for other teams.

Preview: Raptors (4-2) at Thunder (6-1)

Date: November 09, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

DeMar DeRozan has been on an impressive run for the Toronto Raptors. The 27-year-old guard out of USC has averaged 33.7 points on 52 percent shooting to kick off the season.

Even more impressive is that DeRozan is averaging more than nine free throw attempts a game, which is putting opposing defenses in trouble.

"DeMar DeRozan? He's mine. He's ours. He belongs to the Raptors," Toronto coach Dwayne Casey told NBA.com. "He's been great, he's been a great leader, his approach has been very professional. But he's been superb, and we just gotta make sure we continue with a defensive focus."

When Toronto travels to Oklahoma City on Wednesday to take on the surging Thunder, DeRozan will be the responsibility of guard Andre Roberson.

At 6-foot-7, 210 pounds, Roberson has the height and length to bother DeRozan's shot and the athletic ability to keep in front of him and out of the lane.

"He's hot," Roberson said of DeRozan. "He's come out with a lot of confidence this year. We are just going to do our best to come out there and shut him down a little bit, get in our coverages, get back in transition, stick a hand in his face. I think we'll be ready."

The Raptors head into the game coming off a loss to Sacramento on Sunday night. It was a game in which the Kings' DeMarcus Cousins pummeled Toronto's interior defense to the tune of 22 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Toronto was without Jonas Valanciunas, who had a left knee contusion. He has not been ruled out against Oklahoma City.

If Valanciunas is unable to go, that leaves rookies Jakob Poeltl and Pascal Siakam to deal with the Thunder frontline of Steven Adams, Enes Kanter and Domantas Sabonis. The trio combined for 45 points and 26 points Monday in a win over Miami. But it was their ability to protect the rim that impressed Thunder coach Billy Donovan the most.

"We had great length at the basket. I thought Steven's length at the basket, Jerami's (Grant) length at the basket, Domantas at times," Donovan said. "We had length at the basket, which really helped alter some shots. Numbers wise, it looks like a great defensive night. Overall, I think our defense continues to get better."

Oklahoma City is fourth in the NBA in defensive efficiency at 94.6 points allowed per 100 possessions. The starting five is even better at 92.3.

It's one of the reasons Oklahoma City has been able to rest its starters in back-to-back games.

"Great, man, great. If I could do that all year, that would be great with me," Russell Westbrook said. "Rest is always good, but it's always good to see that we're doing a good job putting teams away early. We're doing a good job of coming out and being defense-minded."

The Raptors will need more than DeRozan to break through the stifling Oklahoma City defense.

"We've got to shoot the ball better," Raptors guard Kyle Lowry told Raptors.com. "That's not a concern, I just think we have to find a way to make the shots. We've got to shoot more and get in the gym and shoot even more, get even more extra shots up. But we'll see what happens. I think our confidence is there."
