KEY STAT: Barcelona have scored at least twice in their last eight home Champions League games

EXPERT VERDICT: Pep Guardiola has dominated the spotlight since he took charge at Manchester City and he will be the centre of attention as he returns to Barcelona to face his former club. Barca's brilliant attacking trio of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez should make it an unhappy return but City also pack a punch in the final third.

RECOMMENDATION: Barcelona to win 3-1

KEY STAT: There have been at least three goals in eight of Ludogoret’s last ten games

EXPERT VERDICT: Arsenal have really begun to motor over the last month but will have to be wary of Ludogorets’ threat. The Bulgarian champions have scored in all but three of their 41 games this term and may at least get on the scoresheet before the Gunners’ class eventually tells.

RECOMMENDATION: Arsenal to win 3-1

KEY STAT: Celtic have scored in 15 of their 18 games this season

EXPERT VERDICT: Celtic laid to rest their matchday one mauling at Barcelona with a great showing against Manchester City in a memorable 3-3 draw. The Bhoys were positive against the Citizens and Brendan Rodgers’ attacking philosophy may bring them joy against a Gladbach who have kept only one clean sheet this term.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: Southampton have won just one away game this season

EXPERT VERDICT: Inter have struggled for consistency under Frank de Boer and their Europa League form is rotten but they could find joy against Southampton. Hapoel Be’er Sheva and Sparta Prague proved hard to breakdown but Claude Puel’s men are unlikely to sit back, which could help the ailing Nerazzurri.

KEY STAT: Zenit have scored nine times in two Europa League matches

EXPERT VERDICT: The fairytale of Dundalk reached new heights with their 1-0 win over Maccabi Tel Aviv but the Irish outfit could be in for a reality check against Zenit. Mircea Lucescu’s free-scoring outfit are looking strong domestically in Russia this season and should have far too much quality in the final third.

KEY STAT: Man Utd have scored once in two Europa League matches this season

EXPERT VERDICT: Both of Manchester United’s opening Europa League matches have been low-scoring and finished 1-0 so expect this fixture to follow suit. United – who found Zorya hard to beat despite dominating possession – face Chelsea on Sunday and Jose Mourinho could limit his team’s creativity by resting some big names.

RECOMMENDATION: Man Utd to win 1-0

CL Best Bets - Wednesday
By Toby Maxtone-Smith

UEFA Champions League - Matchday 3

Wednesday night’s Champions League action has a rather one-sided feel to it, with all but two of the matches involving a favourite at a price of 1/2 or shorter. These range from the shortest team of the night - Arsenal at 1/7 against Ludogorets Razgrad - to Barcelona at 1/2 against Manchester City.

On Tuesday, Borussia Dortmund continued their excellent form in this competition with a hard-fought 2-1 away to Sporting Lisbon, making a very interesting fight for top spot with Real Madrid, who thrashed Legia Warsaw.

There were 1-0 wins for Leicester City, Juventus and Sevilla, while both matches in Group A - Bayer Leverkusen vs. Tottenham Hotspur and CSKA Moscow vs. Monaco - ended in draws.

The Banker: Napoli to beat Besiktas at 4/9

Napoli have been very impressive in the Champions League so far, defeating both Dynamo Kiev and Benfica to put them on top of a tight-looking Group B. They welcome Besiktas to the Stadio San Paolo, and given the Neapolitans’ pedigree in this competition and the big difference in quality between the sides, they look a banker to win this match.

The Turkish side have drawn both their matches so far, but were not especially impressive and either, and the trip to Naples is a sterner test than what they have faced so far. Napoli have hit some dodgy form in the league, but until the end of September they had one every match this season, except their opening game against Pescara.

Napoli’s home Champions League record is formidable, and better sides than Besiktas have been soundly beaten there. At 4/9 Napoli are a good bet.

The Solid Bet: Over 2.5 goals in Rostov vs. Atletico Madrid at 11/10

Atletico Madrid’s extraordinary abilty to be able to match Barcelona and Real Madrid - teams of vastly greater financial power than them - has been founded on one of the most solid defences in Europe.

This season though, they have become a fantastic attacking force. Last season they scored 63 goals in 38 league games - a rate of 1.66 per game; this season they have scored 21 in eight league games - 2.63 per game. Last weekend they smashed Granada 7-1 at the Vicente Calderon.

Bookmakers do not seem to have fully caught on to this new Atletico, and a price of 21/20 on their game with Rostov yielding over 2.5 goals is eye-opening. Rostov’s two games so far have seen nine goals, including a 5-0 drubbing by Bayern Munich. They then drew 2-2 with PSV Eindhoven.

The Outsider: Manchester City draw no bet away to Barcelona at 7/2

The prices for Pep Guardiola’s return to Barcelona with Manchester City are a telling sign of the gap between what are probably the best sides in England and Spain. Barça are 1/2 with City available at 11/2. Whatever the result here, expect to see Barcelona go into the return match at the Etihad as strong favourites as well.

But bookmakers may have underestimated City’s chances. Perhaps they have taken an unfortunate league blip - they missed two penalties in their draw with Everton - too much into account.

Their great advantage is that Pep Guardiola knows Barcelona intimately, and as one of the most detailed tactical coaches in the world, he will have prepared City impeccably for this fixture. By and large they have been excellent under Guardiola so far, but given that a draw would be a very good result for City it would be a better idea to back them on the Draw No Bet at 7/2.

The First Goalscorer: Moussa Dembélé for Celtic against Borussia Mönchengladbach at 6/1

One of the shrewdest signings made by anyone in a minor European league this year was Moussa Dembélé - no, not that one - moving from Fulham to Celtic for just £500,000. After netting 15 in his breakthrough season for Fulham, he has scored 12 in 16 games for Celtic.

And before you say ‘well that’s the Scottish league, scoring goals is easy’, bear in mind that he netted two against Manchester City in his team’s 3-3 draw with them in the last round, as well as scoring a hat-trick in Celtic’s derby with Rangers - a 5-1 victory.

He is available at 6/1 to score first as Celtic meat Borussia Mönchengladbach. The two teams’ matches may end up being simply play-offs for third place in the group: the other two teams are Barcelona and Man City - few would be able to catch them.

NHL roundup: Blackhawks' Hossa scores 500th goal in victory
By The Sports Xchange

CHICAGO -- Marian Hossa scored his 500th career goal and Artemi Panarin and Artem Anisimov each scored twice as the Chicago Blackhawks rallied to beat the the Philadelphia Flyers 7-4 on Tuesday night at the United Center.
Panarin's second goal came at 16:03 of the third period after Anisimov snapped a 4-4 tie with a wrist shot at 10:24 of the third period. Anisimov added an empty-netter. The three goals came after Chicago allowed four straight goals.
Hossa, who became the 44th player in NHL history to reach the 500-goal plateau, left the game in the third period after being hit by a puck.
The Flyers erased a four-goal deficit after Wayne Simmonds pounded a power-play rebound past Corey Crawford with 3:49 gone in the third period. Crawford finished with 23 saves.

Lightning 4, Panthers 3 (SO)

The Panthers' Michael Matheson scored with 4:08 left to give the Panthers a 3-2 lead. Stamkos got a loose puck behind the Florida goal late, passing out to Victor Hedman, who passed back to him for a wide shot to the far top corner of the net and his second goal of the season.

Capitals 3, Avalanche 0
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- T. J. Oshie tallied two goals, Alex Ovechkin scored his first of the season and Philipp Grubauer registered his first career shutout as Washington downed Colorado.

Varlamov, who began his NHL career with Washington, made 34 stops.

Canadiens 4, Penguins 0
MONTREAL -- David Desharnais scored twice and Al Montoya was sharp in goal to lead Montreal over Pittsburgh.
Montoya, making his third consecutive start while starter Carey Price recovers from illness, made 36 saves in earning his sixth career shutout and first with the Canadiens. Max Pacioretty and Alexander Radulov also scored for Montreal, which earned the 3,300th victory in the franchise's NHL history.
Marc-Andre Fleury, making his second start in as many nights, stopped 28 shots as the Penguins (2-1-1) lost for the first time in regulation.

Stars 2, Predators 1
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Jason Spezza snapped a 1-1 tie with his first goal of the season at 9:15 of the third period as Dallas shut down Nashville.
Kari Lehtonen made 27 stops for the Stars, including a skate save on Calle Jarnkrok's glorious chance at the right goalpost early in the third period.
Pekka Rinne stopped 35 shots for the Predators, who lost their second straight after a season-opening victory over Chicago.

Wild 6, Kings 3
SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- Minnesota blasted past still-winless Los Angeles, scoring five times on their first 15 shots as the Kings continue to struggle without injured goaltender Jonathan Quick.
Erik Haula, Jason Pominville, Charlie Coyle, Mikko Koivu and Teemu Pulkkinen scored for Minnesota. Jared Spurgeon added a 190-foot empty-net goal with 2:18 to play to cap the scoring.
Los Angeles got two goals from Tanner Pearson -- one in the opening minute. Kings starting goaltender Jeff Zatkoff had 11 saves on 16 shots in the first two periods. He was pulled in favor of Peter Budaj, who made nine third-period saves.

Sharks 3, Islanders 2
NEW YORK -- Joe Pavelski scored the winning goal on a deflection with 2:11 left as San Jose edged New York.
Pavelski was whistled for delay of game with 1:06 left, but the Sharks held the Islanders to two shots -- including one by Brock Nelson that deflected off goaltender Aaron Dell as time expired -- on the abbreviated power play.
Melker Karlsson scored in the first period and Hertl added a goal in the waning moments of the second period for San Jose, which bounced back from a 7-4 loss to the New York Rangers on Monday night. Dell notched 21 saves to record the win in his NHL debut.

Canucks 2, Blues 1 (OT)
VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Henrik Sedin scored at 1:40 of overtime to give Vancouver a victory over St. Louis.
The Canucks' Bo Horvat tied the game with 2:55 left in the third period, marking the third time in three games this year the Canucks battled back from a deficit to win a game. Jacob Markstrom made 23 saves for Vancouver.
Vladimir Tarasenko scored for the Blues while Jake Allen made 24 saves.

Devils 2, Ducks 1
NEWARK, N.J. -- Taylor Hall scored his first two goals with New Jersey as the Devils defeated undisciplined Anaheim for their first victory of the season.
The Ducks had a chance to tie late when New Jersey's John Moore was whistled for delay of game with 3:04 remaining, but their power play came up empty.
The Devils' Cory Schneider stopped 23 shots. Anaheim received its goal from Sami Vatanen while John Gibson made 26 saves.

Senators 7, Coyotes 4
OTTAWA -- Ottawa scored four goals in the third period to defeat Arizona.

Arizona lost goaltender Mike Smith with what appeared to be a left leg injury with 12:42 left in the third. Smith made 27 saves, while his replacement, Louis Domingue, stopped eight of 11 shots.

Flames 4, Sabres 3 (OT)
CALGARY, Alberta -- Sean Monahan scored at 2:26 of overtime to lead Calgary over Buffalo for its first victory of the season.
Micheal Frolik, Micheal Ferland and rookie Matthew Tkachuk (first career goal) also scored for the Flames while goaltender Chad Johnson made 18 saves against his old team.

Hurricane Warning
Bettors have the North Carolina State Fair to thank for the road odyssey for the Carolina Hurricanes to start each and every National Hockey League regular season. The parking lot for PNC Arena fills up for the nearby state fair, causing the Hurricanes to vacate their Raleigh home and hit the road for a week or two. While the young Hurricanes have been productive early in games, their failures in the third period and overtime so far in stops in Winnipeg and Vancouver have been as painful as trying to choke down a Krispy Kreme bacon double cheeseburger or deep-fried Twinkie from the fair. The Hurricanes blew a 4-1 lead with 14 minutes to go in Winnipeg on opening night, eventually falling 5-4 in OT. Their game in Vancouver was nearly a carbon copy, blowing a 3-0 lead late, as the Canucks forced OT and eventually won it 4-3.

Where's the Deef?
The Edmonton Oilers have been involved in three games to start the season with scores resembling All-Star Game results. The Oil snuffed out the Flames 7-4 to christen their new arena, Rogers Place, in successful fashion. In the second end of the home-and-home, the offense was dialed back slightly, as Edmonton topped Calgary by a 5-3 count. The Buffalo Sabres dealt the young Oilers their first setback in their new home, dropping them 6-2 Sunday night. So far the total for each Edmonton game has been set at 5.5 goals, but their games have seen an average of 9.0 goals per contest. The Oilers have averaged 4.7 GPG through the first three outings while the defense/goaltending has coughed up 4.3 GPG. Until the Oilers show signs of slowing down the opposition, or Vegas adjusts their total to 6, keep banging the 'over' in Edmonton games.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday, Oct. 18
The Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens tangle at Bell Centre. The Penguins have won four of their past five trips to Montreal, with the Pens skating away with wins in 11 of the past 16 meetings overall. The road team has cashed in six of the past seven in this series. ... The Florida Panthers have dominated the Sunshine State rivalry against the Tampa Bay Lightning lately, winning four of the past five meetings, but they're just 2-5 in their past seven trips to the Ice Palace. There are usually plenty of goals in this rivalry, with the 'over' 11-3 in the past 14 in Tampa, and 10-4 in the past 14 overall. ... The 'under' is 19-4-4 in the past 27 in Minnesota between the Kings and Wild, and the 'under' is 31-12-8 in the past 51 overall.

Wednesday, Oct. 19
The Detroit Red Wings invade Madison Square Garden to battle the New York Rangers, one of just two games on the NHL slate. Dating back to last season the Wings have dropped 18 of their past 23 games away from home. Conversely, the Blueshirts have won 50 of their past 68 against a team with an overall winning percentage under .400. While the Rangers look good for a wager, you can certainly expect to eat a lot of chalk. Detroit has dropped six straight at MSG, and the home team is 14-3 in the past 17 in this series. Total bettors might also be interested in the fact the 'under' is 8-1-3 in the past 12 meetings between these Original Six teams, and 5-1-1 in the past seven at MSG.

Thursday, Oct. 20
The Kings and Stars tangle in Big D Thursday night. Los Angeles won its only trip to Dallas last season, winning 5-2 back on March 15, and they're a respectable 6-4-1 in their past 11 skates in the Heart of Texas. ... The Hurricanes skate in the Saddledome to try and extinguish the Flames. It's a tall order for Carolina, as they're 0-6-1 in their past seven trips to Calgary, last winning Dec. 12, 2002. The Hurricanes have been outscored 26-9 during the span, too, and in one of those games they lit the lamp six times. So it's been a real house of horrors for them over the years.

Grand Salami - October

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

Preview: Maple Leafs (1-0) at Jets (1-2)

Date: October 19, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Auston Matthews and Patrik Laine will forever be linked as the top two selections in last spring's NHL draft, and the rivalry between the two -- whether they like it or not -- officially starts Wednesday night at the MTS Centre.

Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs visit the Winnipeg Jets for their first battle of the season. There is no question Matthews, an Arizona-born center, made the bigger splash thus far, albeit over a two-game body of work.

The 19-year-old scored a quartet of goals in his first NHL game, a 5-4 loss to the Ottawa Senators, becoming the first player in league history to accomplish such a feat. Laine followed up the next evening with a goal and an assist in a 5-4 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

The duo cooled off since, with Matthews being held off the scoresheet in a 4-1 victory over Boston on Saturday while Laine posted a pair of goose eggs in losses to both the Minnesota Wild (4-3) and the Bruins (4-1).

They don't award the Calder Trophy in October -- despite what many observers in Toronto seem to think -- so hockey fans can look forward to another six months of comparisons and dueling highlights. There are also a large number of other first-year players throughout the NHL who may have something to say about the end-of-year rookie hardware.

Matthews, for one, isn't buying into the hype.

"We're on our own teams now," he told the Toronto Sun following practice Tuesday. "It's not any comparison, not one against the other. It's just another game. We have 80 more of them. It's the Toronto Maple Leafs against Winnipeg Jets."

Laine concurred, telling a media scrum on Tuesday that they will each follow their own careers.

"I don't need any rivalry between us. I just focus on my own job," the 18-year-old Finland native said.

Whatever you say, fellas.

Jets coach Paul Maurice and Leafs bench boss Paul Maurice are also quick to downplay the comparisons, noting Matthews is a center while Laine plays on the right wing.

The dynamic duo will be far from the only rookies in this game. Laine is joined by forwards Kyle Connor and Brandon Tanev and defenseman Josh Morrissey, while Matthews has right winger Connor Brown and center Mitch Marner as teammates.

Fans of the WHA Jets will also get their fix on Wednesday evening as the famed Hot Line of Bobby Hull, Ulf Nilsson and Anders Hedberg will be inducted into the Jets' newly minted Hall of Fame.

Hull won't able to attend for personal reasons, but the two Swedish superstars arrived in Winnipeg late Tuesday evening.

Graying stars of yesteryear from the Jets and Oilers started to trickle into town a few days prior to the Heritage Classic's alumni game Saturday, but it will turn into a geyser over the next couple of days as the likes of Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Jari Kurri from the Oilers and Teemu Selanne and Dale Hawerchuk from the Jets touch down.

'ICE PICK'

Toronto at Winnipeg October 19, 8:00 EST

When the Toronto Maple Leafs visit the MTS Centre to face the Winnipeg Jets there's an 'Over'-Whelming chance the contest will bust 'Over' posted totals (5.5). The teams have shown they can light the lamp on the offensive end having combined for 18 goals in the early stages. However, neither team has been very sound on the defensive side of the puck giving up a combined 18 goals.

When it comes a high-scoring series the Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets haven't dissappointed 'Over' gamblers. In the past eight meetings the teams have averaged 7.1 goals/game playing 'Over' in each case. Count on the goal judges to be extra busy, consider an 'Over' play.

NHL Odds and Expert Analysis: Scouting the Week Ahead
by Alan Matthews

That was about the newsiest first week of an NHL season that I can remember! Unfortunately, it was in the form of bad news for three teams.

But since I try to be a glass half-full type of guy, let's start with something that had the entire hockey world buzzing: the electric debut of 2016 No. 1 overall pick Auston Matthews with the Toronto Maple Leafs. They basically tanked last season to improve their chances of winning the draft lottery and the right to take Matthews. And don't say the NHL's move to warm-weather locales in Florida, Arizona and California was a mistake because more kids in those areas are growing up playing hockey. Matthews, whose mother is from Mexico, was born in California and grew up in Scottsdale, Ariz., as he got interested in the sport watching the Coyotes play.

Back in June, Matthews became the Leafs' first overall pick since they took Wendel Clark in 1985. He was a good player, but a lot more is expected of Matthews -- basically, to finally return the Leafs to relevance and end the franchise's Stanley Cup drought (last Cup was in 1967).

The Leafs aren't going to win the Cup this year or probably even make the playoffs, but Matthews scored four goals in his debut on Wednesday against Ottawa. The fact Toronto lost 5-4 in overtime really was secondary. No player had ever scored four goals in his NHL debut. Just for comparison, neither Sidney Crosby nor Gordie Howe have four-goal NHL games to their credit. It took Alex Ovechkin 202 games to record his first four-goal game. Wayne Gretzky did it in 136. There was just one four-goal game in the NHL last season, by Calgary's Sam Bennett.

This is the NHL's best possible scenario: an American star in the hub of hockey, Toronto. Matthews was a heavy -150 favorite to win the Calder Trophy entering the season. I'm not saying that race is over, but ...

Now we get to the bad news of the first week: injury concerns for the Penguins' Crosby, the Sabres' Jack Eichel and Evander Kane, and Kings' Jonathan Quick.

Crosby appeared past all his injury woes, but is now dealing with another concussion. He might be back fairly soon and has been skating but this is the NHL's worst nightmare as Crosby missed significant time during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons while recovering from post-concussion symptoms. Crosby led Team Canada to an undefeated run at the World Cup of Hockey last month and was named tournament MVP. Pittsburgh is still the +450 favorite at Bovada to repeat as Eastern Conference champion.

Eichel, who had a terrific rookie season last year, is going to miss 6-8 weeks after suffering a high-ankle sprain. At least it wasn't some sort of tear or break but it's still devastating to a Sabres team I thought could sneak into the playoffs. Eichel had 24 goals and 32 assists last year. Kane suffered three cracked ribs on Thursday night when he crashed into the end boards against Montreal. He will be out "weeks." Kane is a knucklehead at times but mega-talented. He had 20 goals and 15 assists in 65 games with Buffalo last year.

The Kings put their star goaltender, Quick, on injured reserve with a groin injury suffered in Thursday's opener against the Sharks. Quick has backstopped the Kings to a pair of Stanley Cups and had played in 140 of their 162 regular-season games over the past two seasons. The two-time Vezina finalist is being called week-to-week for now. But if he decides on surgery, it could be a 3-4 month absence. The veteran duo of Jeff Zatkoff and Peter Budaj will be handling the assignment in Quick's spot. Budaj was called up from the AHL following Quick's injury. The Kings are +900 to win the Western Conference.

This Week's Games To Watch

Pittsburgh at Montreal, Tuesday: This is the Habs' home opener and it's always an event when Crosby comes to town so we will have to wait and see if Canada's golden child will be able to. It doesn't seem likely as he hasn't been cleared for contact as of this writing. It's the second of a back-to-back for the Pens after hosting Colorado on Monday. What about Canadiens goalie Carey Price? He missed the team's first two games with a severe case of the flu. He was limited to only 12 regular-season games a year ago and the Canadiens went into the tank without him. That was due to a knee injury, but Price is clearly over that as he backstopped Canada to gold at the World Cup of Hockey. Al Montoya started the first two games for Price. Pittsburgh won two of three against Montreal last year.

St. Louis at Edmonton, Thursday: I thought the Oilers gave up on 2012 No. 1 overall pick Nail Yakupov too soon when they traded the forward to St. Louis earlier this month for a prospect and a conditional 2017 draft pick. Granted, Yakupov hadn't lived up to expectations with 23 points in 60 games last year and 111 points in 252 career NHL games. But the guy is just 23 and was a junior hockey dynamo. He also looked good his rookie year with 17 goals and 14 assists in the lockout-shortened 48-game campaign. Edmonton also hadn't exactly been the most stable organization while was there, either, in terms of coaches. Yakupov had requested a trade and can become a restricted free agent after the season. Yakupov had a goal and an assist his second game with the Blues and no doubt will be eager to score against his former team in this one.

NY Rangers at Washington, Saturday: An NHL Network game. These two rivals have quite a playoff history against one another this decade. They last met in the 2015 conference semifinals and Washington blew a 3-1 series lead and lost because that's something the Capitals tend to do. The Caps won the Metropolitan Division with an NHL-high 120 points last season and the Rangers were third with 101 and I think they will finish 1-2 this season, especially if Crosby's injury lingers. The Caps won three of five meetings in 2015-16 and four of the five were high-scoring. Bit of a surprise considering the quality of goalies in Braden Holtby, last year's Vezina winner, and Henrik Lundqvist. The Caps' star Ovechkin, the reigning NHL goal-scoring king, wasn't able to light the lamp in Washington' s first two games last week.

Preview: Red Wings (1-2) at Rangers (2-1)

Date: October 19, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

The Detroit Red Wings suffered one of the bigger losses of the summer when center Pavel Datsyuk decided to ostensibly retire to and return home to Russia. He wanted to spend more time with his family and play in the Kontinental Hockey League, and the Red Wings allowed him to do so.

How much the Red Wings feel the absence of the future Hall of Famer remains to be seen. The team dropped their first two games of the season before breaking through for their first win Monday, a 5-2 thumping of the Ottawa Senators at Joe Louis Arena.

General manager Ken Holland signed free-agent center Frans Nielsen to fill Datsyuk's roster spot, but the group effort the Red Wings showed against the Senators will be the formula for success in the post-Datsyuk era, which continues against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night.

Defenseman Mike Green had a hat trick, the team scored two power-play goals and nine players had points, including new acquisition Thomas Vanek, who had three assists. Unlike their season-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, when they squandered a lead, the Red Wings pulled away after grabbing a 3-0 advantage in the first period.

"Right now as a team, we've got to learn how to get more comfortable and play better with the lead," Vanek said to the Detroit Free Press. "We saw it in Tampa, too -- we were great, had lots of energy, got the lead, and then sat back. We did the same until (Green made it 4-1), and then we got better again."

The Rangers have won two of three games to start the season and had to stave off a third-period push in both victories.

A 2-0 lead against the New York Islanders on Thursday became a 2-2 game in the third period before the Rangers pulled away. On Monday, the San Jose Sharks cut a 5-2 lead to 5-4 late in the third period before the Rangers scored a pair of empty-net goals to secure the victory.

"I think we played pretty smart," Rangers goaltender Antti Raanta said. "There are some things we can do better but we know what we can do protecting the lead. Of course when you have a three-goal lead and there are only four or five minutes left, sometimes it's mental things. You give them a little bit and suddenly it's back to 5-4. It's good to practice those things when it's a one-goal game like that."

It may be tough for the Rangers to play better defensively, as they could again be without Kevin Klein and Dan Girardi. Klein's status should be decided by Rangers coach Alain Vigneault on Wednesday morning.

"We know teams are going to surge when they are down," Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh said, "and I think in certain areas we're still trying to work on and make sure that we don't get hurt like that as we continue here."

The past six meetings between the Rangers and Red Wings have been decided by one goal, with four going to overtime.

"There aren't any teams in this league that aren't quality," Rangers left winger Chris Kreider "There's an unbelievable amount of parity. So it's going to be another test for us. We'll enjoy (beating San Jose) for about five minutes and then get ready for Detroit."

At the Gate - Wednesday
By Mike Dempsey

I spent most of the weekend buried in the early past performances for the upcoming Breeders’ Cup, so much so that I don’t think my girlfriend is even talking to me.

I guess I’ll find out on Nov. 6, the day after the two-day championship is over.

Arrogate, the current second choice in early betting for the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) put in a sharp work on Tuesday morning, working seven furlongs in 1:24.40 working in company with stakes winner Mor Spirit.

The colt is currently listed at odds of +260 second only to California Chrome.

We have not seen Arrogate in the afternoon since he won the Travers (G1) at Saratoga on Aug. 27, earning a 122 Beyer Speed Figure, the highest number a three-year-old has produced in nearly a decade.

The colt is trained by Bob Baffert, who saddled the last two winners of the Classic, Bayern in 2014 and Triple Crown winner American Pharoah last year.

His odds could drift up slightly in the coming days as we are still awaiting word on whether Frosted is headed toward the Classic or the Dirt Mile.

Frosted earned a 123 Beyer Speed Figure wining the Met Mile (G1) going a one turn mile, then won the Whitney (G1) at 1 1/8 miles.

He was the beaten chalk in the Woodward (G1) at Saratoga in his last outing on Sept. 3, with the over confident ride by Joel Rosario possibly costing him the victory.

I honestly have no idea which way his connections are leaning. It is a big different in cash between the Classic at $6 million and the Dirt Mile with a $1 million purse.

I thought the same thing last year with Liam’s Map for the Todd Pletcher barn. The colt had won the Woodward (G1) and seemed as if he would be a major player in the Classic, but his connections opted for the Dirt Mile and he did not disappoint, winning by 2 ½ lengths and returning a puny $3.00 to his backers.

Here is today’s opening race from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Clm $25,000N2L (12:55 ET)
3 Par 2-1
8 Arctic King 5-1
5 Ready Strike 5-2
7 Kid Friendly 6-1

Analysis: Par made a mild late run to finish fourth last out against $50,000 starter allowance foes at the Spa. Two back this guy was a game second against state bred Alw-1 foes going 1 3/16 miles on the grass. He makes his third start of his current form cycle for the Pletcher barn and catches a softer group than he faced last out.

Arctic King faded to finish 10th last out against $40,000 non-winners of two at the Spa. He had run a good second two back here at the same level, beaten a half-length for the top spot with the third place finisher Signature Look a next out winner. He was claimed out of his last outing by the Martin barn that is 8% winners first off the claim. This looks like a good spot here dropping in for $25,000.

Wagering
WIN: #3 to win at 2-1 or better
EX: 3,8 / 3,5,7,8
TRI: 3,8 / 3,5,7,8/ 3,4,5,7,8

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 8 OClm $100,000C (4:46 ET)
8 Almanaar 2-1
3 Night Prowler 4-1
4 Weekend Express 6-1
1 Mikelino 12-1

Analysis: Almanaar is one of two in here sent out by the Chad Brown barn and making their second start off the long layoff. This guy is multiple Group 3 place who made his U.S. debut here last month off a year layoff, dueling for the led and weakening to finish fourth. The barn hits at a 20% clip with runners making their second start off a +180-day layoff. He should move forward off his last outing.

Night Prowler was sixth while beaten just 1 3/4 lengths in his return race off a year layoff for Brown. This guy won the Dania Beach (G3) and Transylvania (G3) last year on turf. He did not get much pace to run at and gets an extra half furlong here.

Wagering
WIN: #8 to win at 2-1 or better
EX: 3,8 / 1,3,4,8
TRI: 3,8 / 1,3,4,8 / 1,2,3,4,8

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Belmont Park
R6: #1 Astute Warrior 8-1
R7: #5 Bond Vigilante 10-1
R8: #1 Mikelino 12-1
R9: #10 Beyond Discreet 10-

Good luck today!

# 5 UNCLE CHESTER 4/1

# 9 THE ORPHAN MIRACLE 3/1

# 3 D' ELOQUENT 5/1

UNCLE CHESTER is the most favorable bet in this race. Displays sound Equibase Speed Figures on average overall when compared with the rest of this group. Looks very strong to be up near the lead at the first call. Has performed solidly lately in sprint races, posting a nifty 83 avg Equibase Speed Figure. THE ORPHAN MIRACLE - I expect a formidable performance from this horse whose handler has one of the strongest return on investment percentages with horses running at this distance and surface. Recorded a formidable speed rating in the latest race. Can run another good one in this contest. D' ELOQUENT - He has put up very strong figures under today's conditions and should fare well against this field. Must be in good condition if the trainer is bringing him back so quickly.

# 6 SCOTTISH CROSS 3/1
# 7 PERFECT RENDITION 5/2
# 3 VIBE BLUE CHIP 6/1

Hard not to favor SCOTTISH CROSS as the top play in this event. She's doing work in fine form, recording huge TrackMaster speed figs. An excellent pick. The 86 average class statistic may give this mare a distinct advantage in the race. Could best this group, just look at the TrackMaster Speed Rating - 91 - from her last event. PERFECT RENDITION - May provide us a victory based on very good recent TrackMaster speed figs - earning an average of 90. The wagering panel noted a formidable performance out of this nice horse last time. Hoping for a duplicate of that to score. VIBE BLUE CHIP - Has been running solidly lately and his style of running should result in a bang-up performance.

# 1 DOMINUS CLASSY 4/1

# 3 DISTINCTION BIRD 5/1

# 5 REGAL SABELLINA 8/5

My choice for this race is DOMINUS CLASSY. Reason to like this filly as she has in the saddle one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last month. Has a strong record at the distance and surface, which makes me back this filly. Has to be used in the exotic offerings. DISTINCTION BIRD - Will more than likely be one of the early speedsters of the pack going into the halfway point of the contest. Going in a dirt sprint race gives this filly a respectable shot. REGAL SABELLINA - Has been close at the finish most every time recently. This filly is coming right back to race.

Hawthorne - Race #8 - Post: 5:50pm - Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $8,000 Class Rating: 77

Rating:

#1 WOOD NOT MIND (ML=6/1)
#6 WAR NEWS (ML=15/1)
#10 REFASHION (ML=9/2)

WOOD NOT MIND - I just may give this one a shot. Should rebound off last race where she did run out of the money, but was within 5 lengths at the wire. 50-55-75 are last three speed ratings. Improving each time out is something she should do again in today's race. WAR NEWS - Utilizing this rider/trainer combination is a smart move. REFASHION - Cristel brings her right back. I suggest you stay with this strong mare. When a thoroughbred finishes in the top three as often as this mare does, you will usually want to use her in your exotic wagers. Sub-par effort last out at Arlington was due to the off-going (she finished fourth). Has to do better today on a fast track.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 ALYCZARA (ML=5/2), #8 T C B KIWI'S (ML=4/1), #3 BE GOOD TO US (ML=6/1),

ALYCZARA - Hard to recommend any horse with decreasing speed figs of 86/79/35. T C B KIWI'S - 4/1 is just too low of a reward to take on most any horse that has run poorly in back to back outings. Thoroughbred ran a great speed fig in the last race, but that was on the soft turf. BE GOOD TO US - Latest speed rating of 78 may not be true since it was on the soft turf.

# 1 MORELAND FLASH 9/1
# 6 LYNYRD 15/1
# 7 SHADOW ME THEMONEY 15/1

Look no further than MORELAND FLASH as the bet in this race especially at a long price. Overall numbers appear really good. Can't throw out at this point. May be the most respectable in the grouping here, showing nice statistics of late. Avg speed is a solid 75. A really strong class horse can't be forgotten. With an avg class stat of 77 all signs say this is the one to beat. LYNYRD - Sometimes you just have to go with good vibrations, support this one's chances. SHADOW ME THEMONEY - Bettors should make a mental note that this nice horse runs with second time Lasix today. Deserves a shot given the positive win clip he sports.

Mountaineer Park - Race #3 - Post: 7:44pm - Maiden Special - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $14,100 Class Rating: 58

Rating:

#6 MR D'S WAY (ML=9/2)
#5 GAME PLAYED (ML=3/1)

MR D'S WAY - Fadlovich and Wilkinson partnered together are a punter's friend. As long as Fadlovich keeps this pony off the pace, I have to believe this one could be a winner. This animal brings in a lot of dough per race around the track. In the top spot in this race. The Sep 29th event at Churchill Downs was at a class level of (71). Dropping down in class ranks a significant amount, so he should be in a good spot. GAME PLAYED - Forgive the out of the top three finish on the off track last out. On a non-sloppy track, has a shot right here.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 AGBASH (ML=3/1), #1A BAKU DANCER (ML=3/1), #2 LEAD THE CHARGE (ML=7/2),

AGBASH - Doesn't look to have enough good aspects to bear out the reward. BAKU DANCER - Doesn't look to have enough good aspects to support the price. LEAD THE CHARGE - When looking at today's class figure, he will have to notch a better speed rating than last time out to be competitive in this dirt sprint.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

#6 MR D'S WAY is the play if we get odds of 7/5 or better
