KEY STAT: Mainz have kept just one clean sheet in their last eight matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Borussia Dortmund's title hopes took a massive hit when they lost 5-1 at Bayern Munich before the international break but they can respond by beating mid-table Mainz at Stadion am Bruchweg. A fortnight off has given Dortmund time to clear their heads and should improve their chances against Mainz, who have lost three of their last five matches.

RECOMMENDATION: Borussia Dortmund

KEY STAT: Forest have lost one of five away games this season

EXPERT VERDICT: Bristol City’s winless record at home in the Championship makes them hard to have any faith in and, despite Nottingham Forest’s shaky start, the Tricky Trees should prevail. Forest have enough class to dispose of the division’s bottom club and their style of play makes them hard to beat on the road.

RECOMMENDATION: Nottingham Forest

KEY STAT: Both teams have scored in four of Ross County’s last five games

EXPERT VERDICT: Aberdeen’s winning start to the Scottish Premiership season was ended after eight games on their last trip to the Highlands – at Inverness – and they then lost 5-1 to St Johnstone. Ross County may also be coming off the boil after a solid start, and both teams to score could be the call.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: Leigh Griffiths has eight goals in ten league games

EXPERT VERDICT: Celtic’s price to win this match looks about right and their leaky defence on the road points to a bet on both teams scoring. But Motherwell, who sacked manager Ian Baraclough in late September, lack attacking bite. The safer bet could be on in-form striker Leigh Griffiths scoring first.

KEY STAT: Liverpool haven’t kept a clean sheet in eight matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Jurgen Klopp is likely to prove a fine managerial appointment for Liverpool, but this trip to White Hart Lane comes a little early for the German to have made an impression. No top-flight side has conceded fewer goals than Spurs this term and their attacking players are starting to gel nicely.

Preview: Senators (1-1) at Blue Jackets (0-3)

Date: October 14, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

Three games into the season and the Columbus Blue Jackets are worried.

In danger of opening with four straight regulation losses for the first time, the Blue Jackets look to end their recent home struggles against the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday night.

Whether it's unforced errors, a penalty-killing unit that's allowed four goals on 11 chances or the fact it has yet to score first in any contest, Columbus (0-3-0) has plenty of issues than a week into the season.

"The way we're playing right now is unacceptable," captain Nick Foligno told the NHL's official website.

All the more so given the exciting offseason addition of Chicago Blackhawks forward Brandon Saad in a trade, as well as the pickup of veteran Gregory Campbell. The Blue Jackets, though, haven't yet looked up to the task of moving on from last season's playoff-less finish.

They allowed the New York Rangers to score the final three goals - all in the third period - of an opening 4-2 loss Oct. 9, then gave up the first five one night later in a 5-2 defeat in the rematch. Columbus fell behind 2-0 at Buffalo on Monday and managed to get within one on two occasions with third-period goals from Saad and Scott Hartnell, but fell 4-2.

"For me, this one is concerning," said coach Todd Richards, whose team is off to its worst start since an 0-7-1 beginning in 2011-12.

"The other games, I thought we did some things that you can build off your game," he added. "There wasn't a lot accomplished in (Monday's) game.'

Saad, who recorded a career-high 23 goals last season, has half of the four Columbus has scored on 13 power-play opportunities. However, the Blue Jackets allowed three power-play goals to the Sabres, giving them seven chances with the man advantage.

"It's not like we're going to the drawing board not knowing what's wrong," forward Ryan Johansen said. "We've got to manage those goal areas better.

"In sports, it's never really rainbows and butterflies."

Johansen has a goal and four assists in four road games against Ottawa (2-1-0), but one assist during Columbus' three-game home skid in the series.

Ottawa scored eight goals in its first two games before falling 3-1 to Montreal in Sunday's home opener.

"We weren't hard enough on pucks, right through the 12 forwards that were dressed," coach Dave Cameron said. "We talk all the time about if we're going to establish ourselves as any kind of team that's tough to play against, you have to go through pucks, not around them."

Jean-Gabriel Pageau had a short-handed goal for the Senators, who can get back on track by winning a third straight road game to open the season for the first time since 2007-08.

After Matthew O'Conner made 31 saves in his NHL debut Monday, it's likely Craig Anderson will be back in net while holding down the No. 1 goaltending role in place of the injured Andrew Hammond. Anderson has a 2.40 goals-against average in his two starts this season and is 6-1-0 with a 2.44 GAA in his last seven starts against Columbus.

Held without a goal by the Canadiens after scoring three in the first two contests, Kyle Turris does not have any in 12 games against the Blue Jackets. He recorded two assists in a 5-2 win at Columbus on Oct. 28.

Preview: Blackhawks (2-1) at Flyers (1-1)

Date: October 14, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

Patrick Kane and his new linemates on Chicago's second unit are doing their part to help the Blackhawks open strong in defense of their third Stanley Cup title in six years.

The trio will look to continue thriving and help the Blackhawks avoid a fourth consecutive loss in Philadelphia when they face the Flyers on Wednesday night.

Kane has been playing well with three goals and three assists for Chicago (2-1-0)following a tumultuous offseason during which he was accused of a sexual assault at his Buffalo-area offseason home. No charges have been filed in the case.

The situation hasn't seemed to be a distraction for the club, and Kane's linemates - Artem Anisimov and rookie Artemi Panarin - have been providing solid ice time so far.

Anisimov, acquired in the trade that sent Brandon Saad to Columbus, scored in Friday's 3-2 win at the New York Islanders in the opener of a home-and-home set. Panarin had a goal and two assists in Saturday's 4-1 home win over the Islanders after netting his first NHL goal in a season-opening 3-2 loss to the Rangers.

"(Our line) has had a lot of chances and made a lot of plays," said Kane, who scored and added two assists Saturday. "I try to stress to Anisimov and Panarin not to be satisfied where we're at right now. This could be a fun line to play on and we just need to stay together as a line and keep getting better."

While the second line appears set, Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville continues tinkering with the spot on the top line next to Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa. Teuvo Teravainen started there but has since been moved to center, while Andrew Shaw and Ryan Garbutt also have taken turns. Garbutt practiced with the top line this week.

"They're important players you're up there with, so you have to have some trust with that position," Quenneville said. "The other two guys are extremely responsible. That spot is flexible, but we don't want that player to have to change to fit in that spot."

Chicago hasn't won in Philadelphia since June 9, 2010, when Kane's overtime goal in Game 6 clinched the first of the team's three recent championships. The Blackhawks have gone 0-2-1 there since while allowing 12 goals - a stark contrast to the two goals they've allowed in a pair of home wins over the Flyers in the same span.

Michal Neuvirth has embraced his new role as the Flyers' starting goaltender with Steve Mason away from the club indefinitely because of a personal family matter.

Neuvirth relieved Mason in the first period of Saturday's 7-1 loss to Florida and allowed three goals, but he stopped 31 shots Monday and made Brayden Schenn's goal hold up in a 1-0 win over the Panthers.

"It's sad news but you've got business to do," Neuvirth said of Mason's situation. "The more I play, the better I play."

The Flyers (1-1-1) picked up their first win for new coach Dave Hakstol, who was hired after 11 years at North Dakota.

"I think the main focus is to make sure everybody stays together and stays tight," forward Claude Giroux said. "Obviously (Neuvirth) had a lot of big saves for us."

Neuvirth last faced the Blackhawks on March 17 with the Islanders and lost 4-1. He'll likely oppose Corey Crawford, who allowed five goals in the first two games before getting the night off Saturday.

Crawford lost 4-1 to the Flyers in the most recent meeting March 25.

Preview: Bruins (0-3) at Avalanche (1-1)

Date: October 14, 2015 10:00 PM EDT

Veteran defenseman Zdeno Chara and coach Claude Julien have celebrated some of the proudest moments in Boston Bruins history and for the time being remain with the club as it experiences a sudden and surprising fall.

Their days in Boston could be numbered if they can't help lead a quick turnaround.

The Bruins look to avoid dropping their first four games for the first time in 51 years when they visit the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night.

It was only a little over two years ago that Boston came within two victories of its second Stanley Cup in three seasons after Chara became the club's first captain to raise the trophy in 39 years in 2011.

The Bruins missed the playoffs for the first time in eight seasons in 2014-15, though, leading to the firing of general manager Peter Chiarelli and Don Sweeney being named as his replacement. Julien survived the change, but he's still squarely on the hot seat with Boston on the verge of starting 0-4 for the first time since 1964-65.

Chara sat out the first two games with an undisclosed upper-body injury before returning for Monday's 6-3 loss to Tampa Bay. He didn't have a point and finished at a minus-2. For now, he's part of a defense that has allowed 16 goals as it struggles to adjust after trading promising young defenseman Dougie Hamilton to Calgary in the offseason.

The Bruins also dealt physical forward Milan Lucic to Los Angeles, and more changes could be coming. Reports have surfaced that Boston will listen to offers for Chara and forward Brad Marchand, who is out indefinitely after suffering a concussion Saturday against Montreal.

"The amount of goals we're giving up is uncharacteristic of this group," center Chris Kelly said. "Regardless of how many new faces there (are), Boston has always been a good defending team. But right now, that doesn't seem to be the case."

Tuukka Rask has a 4.72 goals-against average while starting each of the Bruins' first three games. The 2013-14 Vezina Trophy winner had a 2.30 mark last season, when Boston allowed 2.45 goals per game to rank fourth in the Eastern Conference.

"You have to make good saves at the right times," Rask said. "And then you can't afford mistakes. So I just have to get better than that, and we'll be fine."

Boston has lost four of the last five meetings with Colorado, which also is trying to put a disappointing season in the past after finishing last in the Central Division.

The Avalanche allowed four third-period goals in a 5-4 loss to Minnesota in Thursday's season opener, but they bounced back Saturday by overcoming a two-goal deficit to beat Dallas 6-3.

Gabriel Landeskog scored twice, Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and two assists and former Bruin Jarome Iginla also scored.

"You look at what happened in the third period against Minnesota, any team would be affected at the start of the (next) game," coach Patrick Roy said. "But at the end, you get to see if you have character."

Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves in a solid performance after the collapse against the Wild and could be in net again for this contest. Varlamov stopped 22 shots and MacKinnon scored the only goal in the shootout as the Avalanche beat the Bruins 3-2 in the most recent meeting Jan. 21.

Rask made 34 saves in that matchup. He's 0-3-1 in his career against Colorado despite posting a 1.98 GAA, but it's unclear if he'll be in net Wednesday.

Preview: Coyotes (2-0) at Ducks (0-1)

Date: October 14, 2015 10:30 PM EDT

While the Arizona Coyotes are cautiously optimistic about their early success, the Anaheim Ducks don't seem too concerned with a slow start.

In danger of opening with three straight losses for the first time in five seasons, the Ducks try to prevent the visiting Coyotes from their first 3-0-0 start in more than a decade Wednesday night.

Coming off a miserable 56-point season, the Coyotes (2-0-0) have ridden goaltender Mike Smith to a solid early showing. After recording an NHL-high 42 losses and a career-worst 3.16 goals-against average in 2014-15, Smith has stopped all but two of the 69 shots he's faced - against Los Angeles and Pittsburgh on back-to-back nights.

The only time the Coyotes opened with three straight wins since relocating to Arizona in 1996 was in 2003-04. The only time Smith has won his first three starts in 10 seasons was 2010-11 with Tampa Bay.

"It's two games," Smith told the NHL's official website. "I hope to continue the good play. It's nice, but more importantly we've played better as a team and we're doing a lot of good things in front of me. It starts there."

The Coyotes have killed all eight penalties through the first two games and held a 39-28 shots advantage in Saturday's 2-1 victory over the Penguins.

Despite going 0 for 7 on the power play, Phoenix has had five players score its six goals. Touted prospect Jordan Martinook recorded his first in 10 career games Saturday.

"It's incredible to have an impact on the team, that's what I want to accomplish every night," Martinook said. "Some nights it's not going to be scoring goals, but when you get to score a goal it's pretty special."

The Ducks (0-1-1) have managed only a goal from defenseman Sami Vatanen through two games, failing to record 30 shots either time. However, Anaheim isn't panicking while trying to avoid dropping its first three games for the first time since 2010-11.

"I think we're doing things the right way now," said Vatanen, who scored a career-high 12 goals in 67 games last season. "The season is long, so we're going the right way."

Anaheim has only had three power-play chances, and though its 56 shots are less than desirable, the effort can't be denied. Both coach Bruce Boudreau and his players felt the team took a step in the right direction with Monday's 2-1 shootout loss to Vancouver.

"At times, we were all over them," defenseman Kevin Bieksa said. "I don't think the shot total dictated the pressure in their end. We didn't get enough shots on net, but nonetheless, I thought we controlled the game for the most part."

Anaheim stars Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf each look to avoid going without a point through the opening three games for the first time in four seasons.

Getzlaf had two goals and two assists in five games against the Coyotes last season, and he's helped Anaheim go 8-0-2 in the past 10 meetings. Both Arizona wins in that span came in shootouts last season, when the Ducks' Frederik Andersen started all five matchups and posted a 1.16 GAA. Oliver Ekman-Larsson had no points in those games despite leading Arizona with 43 last season.

Andersen has stopped 66 of 69 shots this season.

Smith is 1-5-1 with a 2.79 GAA in his last seven starts against the Ducks.

Really keen on the chance of NORTHERN ELIAN taking down the winner's share this time. Feel the need for speed, this fine animal has been turning in some great speed ratings averaging around 75. This gelding has been going to post versus some of the most competitive company in this pack of late. This fine animal achieved a great TrackMaster Speed Rating last time out. Looks sharp to come right back. ENRICHMENT - 86 percent of the time this trainer and horse tandem end up hitting the board. Big players in here. Can't forget based on speed ratings which have been fantastic (72 avg) of late. LONELY ALONE - Going to post competitively, recorded a very compelling speed fig in her last affair (67). Take a good look at making this horse your win play based on high win rate alone.

DELIGHTFUL PLAN will have you running to the cashier's window in here. Feel the need for speed, this standardbred has been turning in some outstanding TrackMaster speed figs averaging around 75. Good for a win wager just off the terrific prior class figures. Have to like this entrant. FAT LADY RETURNS - Been going to post with some tougher customers of late, has a distinct class edge. (Average Rating 74). UNBRIDLED LEGEND - Have to get behind a harness racer coming out of the Pocono Downs 4 position. The win figure is excellent, way above normal. With superior win statistics, Allard should have this filly in excellent position to win the affair.

# 2 THETRAINWASGONE 7/5

# 7 READING GLASSES 8/1

# 1 REGARDING OPAL 9/2

THETRAINWASGONE is the strongest bet in this race. Formidable average speed figures in dirt sprint races make this horse a contender. Reason to like this mare as she has in the irons one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last month. Looks quite good against this group of horses and will most likely be one of the early speedsters. READING GLASSES - She must be carefully examined given the strong speed numbers. Is worth considering and may be a bet - strong Equibase Speed Figures (53 average) at today's distance and surface lately. REGARDING OPAL - With Flores uptop her, this mare will most likely be able to break out early for this event. Barrow and Flores have a strong win percentage together.

# 5 A GALA DAY 7/5

# 3 SKYLARBDANCING 8/1

# 2 TURTLES SURPRISE 10/1

My pick in this competition is A GALA DAY. Has decent speed figures and has to be considered for a wager in this competition. Should be given consideration - I like the numbers from the last competition. A solid 81 avg Equibase class figure may give this filly a distinct class edge versus this field. SKYLARBDANCING - Should be considered here on the basis of the numbers in the speed realm alone. With a nice Equibase class figure average of 86, has one of the most favorable class advantages in this group. TURTLES SURPRISE - This filly has some longshot handicapping angles I like to wager on. Has been travelling soundly in races of this distance, going 2 for 7 under similar conditions.

#4 BACK AWAY (ML=6/1)
#7 VA BANQUE (ML=6/1)

BACK AWAY - In the last race, finished eleventh on the soft turf at Delaware Park. Expect better in this event. Great chance for this racer. Strong late speed and should have good position. I like the fact that this gelding's last speed rating, 80, is tops in this bunch. VA BANQUE - It looks like Mariano had to come to know this colt on September 27th when riding him for the initial time. Back aloft again today. I think this colt is ready to run a good one. He's had enough races around the track since the vacation and should be fit.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 GHOSTBUSTER (ML=2/1), #3 RIGHT ON COURSE (ML=3/1), #1 BATTLED (ML=9/2),

GHOSTBUSTER - Most of the time I need a sprinter to have some recent good showings in sprint races in order to support him. 2/1 odds isn't enough for this horse when looking at the most recent showings. RIGHT ON COURSE - Didn't finish in the money on August 24th at Delaware Park. Followed it up with another less than stellar outing. Today's contest is 5 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't finished in the money in a sprint affair in the last couple months. Not the best of signs. BATTLED - Recent decreasing speed ratings of 85/75/68 give a clue that this horse may be going off form.

#4 NOTALONEINHISHEAD (ML=5/2)

NOTALONEINHISHEAD - Taking this rider/handler combination is a smart move. Have to make this gelding a serious competitor; he comes off a strong effort on September 26th. I think the shorter distance will help this gelding stay the distance.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 CONQUEST KRONOS (ML=2/1), #1 ONE FOR JACK (ML=4/1), #2 FUHR GERRY (ML=9/2),

CONQUEST KRONOS - Not easy to back any vulnerable equine in a sprint affair if he hasn't finished in the money in a sprint in the last 60 days. Hasn't raced or had any morning drills since August 3rd. Not much value on this favorite. ONE FOR JACK - Doubtful that this equine will finish better than he did last time out when placing eighth. This gelding hasn't had any recent good results in sprint contests. I find it hard to play him in this event. Hard to put any money on this gelding on the win end. Likes to finish in the money though. FUHR GERRY - Finished fourth on September 23rd after the extended vacation. Doubtful if there will be any betterment in this race. No picnic to wager on this runner this time around. Make him show you something in a short distance race before you wager on him in a race of 6 furlongs.

Preview: Rangers (88-74) at Blue Jays (93-69)

Game: 5
Venue: Rogers Centre
Date: October 14, 2015 4:07 PM EDT

TORONTO (AP) The Toronto Blue Jays stacked a pair of former Cy Young Award winners to prolong their stay in the AL Division Series.

For the deciding Game 5, they'll turn to a starter who was once expected to miss the entire season.

Marcus Stroman, who tore a ligament in his left knee during a spring training fielding drill in March, will get the ball when the Blue Jays host the Texas Rangers in a winner-take-all affair on Wednesday afternoon.

'He's defied all the odds, that's for sure,' manager John Gibbons said. 'If anybody can rise to the occasion, it would be him.'

Stroman went 4-0 with a 1.67 ERA after rejoining the rotation in mid-September. He'll face Texas lefty Cole Hamels.

After losing the first two games at home, then bouncing back in Game 3 on Sunday night, the Blue Jays routed the Rangers in Texas. Toronto started knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, the 2012 NL Cy Young winner, and replaced him during the fifth inning with hard-throwing left-hander David Price, who won the AL award in 2012.

Now Stroman, who spent most of the summer rehabbing his knee at Duke University while also finishing up his degree, will try to pitch the Blue Jays into their first AL Championship Series since 1993, when Toronto won the second of back-to-back World Series titles.

'I'm just so excited for this opportunity,' the 24-year-old righty said Tuesday as the Blue Jays held an optional workout. 'Those dog days at Duke when it's kind of tough to get through a workout with the knee pain, that's what you kind of have in the back of your mind to keep you going.'

'Obviously, it's a perfect situation that kind of played out in my head, and it's happening. I get the chills just thinking about being in the position that I am now,' he said.

Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos sat in the back row of the press conference room Tuesday and listened as Gibbons and Stroman addressed the media. Speaking in the hallway afterward, Anthopoulos acknowledged it was quite a setback when Stroman first suffered his injury.

'I might yell a little bit, but I don't throw stuff and bang walls,' Anthopoulos said. 'I just got in the car and drove for a little bit.'

By July, as he continued to receive positive updates on Stroman's recovery, the Blue Jays GM started to believe a comeback was likely.

'We factored it in when we were looking to acquire starters,' Anthopoulos said, 'but you had no assurances and no guarantees. Even when he got injured we knew there was a chance, you just don't want to count on it.'

After a series of simulated games at Toronto's spring training facility in Dunedin, Florida, Stroman started at Class A Lansing on Sept. 2, striking out seven in 4 2-3 hitless innings. He struggled in a Triple-A game against Pawtucket on Sept. 7, but bounced back to beat the New York Yankees in his season debut five days later.

'After that we all felt, `We need this guy, let's see what he can do,'' Gibbons said. 'He took off with it.'

First baseman Chris Colabello, who previously played against Stroman in Double-A, said the outgoing pitcher with the dyed-blonde hairdo has become 'like a little brother to me,' one he has every faith in for Game 5.

'Stro just exudes greatness, confidence, belief,' Colabello said. 'Whatever word you want to use to describe him, he's all of that. Watching him pitch brings energy to the fans, brings energy to us. Nothing surprises me when it comes to Stro.'

Stroman allowed four runs, three earned, over seven innings but didn't get a decision in Game 2, which Texas won 6-4 in 14 innings.

'Look, he's a tough opponent,' Rangers manager Jeff Banister said Tuesday as his team worked out in Texas before flying to Toronto. 'This kid's got electric stuff.'

Catcher Chris Gimenez said it will be important for the Rangers to try and slow down Stroman's pace.

'He loves to work quick,' Gimenez said. 'He's very exuberant on the mound with his emotions, and that's a good thing, don't get me wrong. But for us to be successful, we've really got to stick to our game plan, which is bringing him up in the zone, slowing him down and getting him in the middle of the plate.'

Just as he was in Game 2, Stroman will be opposed by Hamels.

'Who else would you rather have on the mound when you have to win a game than your ace?' Gimenez asked.

The Rangers also hope to have four-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner Adrian Beltre in the lineup again Wednesday. The slugger left Game 1 with a strained back but returned with two hits in Game 4. Banister said Tuesday that he hadn't heard anything new from his training staff about Beltre's condition.

'I take that as we're all good,' Banister said.

The Rangers, who brought up infielders Joey Gallo and Ed Lucas from their Fall League team as insurance after Game 1, returned those two players to Phoenix on Tuesday.

Gibbons wouldn't say whether Price, who threw 50 pitches in a three-inning relief stint Monday, would be available out of the bullpen again Wednesday.

'I wouldn't necessarily count on it,' Gibbons said. 'David was very instrumental in getting us here but he's not here to be abused, either.'

Still, with left-hander Brett Cecil out for the playoffs after tearing his left calf in Game 2, and fellow lefty Aaron Loup away from the team for personal reasons, Price is the only left-hander on Toronto's active roster. Asked about Loup's status Tuesday, Gibbons said he didn't know when the sidearming southpaw would rejoin the Blue Jays.
