KEY STAT: Everton have drawn eight of their last 13 away games

EXPERT VERDICT: Everton fully deserve the 2-1 advantage they take to the Etihad Stadium for the second leg of this League Cup semi-final and they can hold on and book their place at Wembley. A draw is what they need and a draw is what they are good enough to get. The Toffees are an enigma but capable of standing firm when required.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

KEY STAT: Juventus have won their last 13 domestic matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Inter have won one of their last five league matches so may be relieved to be involved in the Coppa Italia, but it will be difficult for them avoid defeat in this semi-final first leg. The visitors have lost once on the road in the league this term but the Old Lady can gain an early advantage.

KEY STAT: Excelsior have taken just two points from their last seven Eredivisie matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Excelsior have been beaten in their last two home games by Roda JC and and Cambuur so their fans will not be expecting much joy when PSV come calling. The Dutch champions have lost only one of 19 league games this season.

RECOMMENDATION: PSV-PSV double result

KEY STAT: PSG have won 16 of their last 17 league and cup matches

EXPERT VERDICT: PSG have seen off Toulouse twice recently but needed a last-minute Zlatan Ibrahimovic penalty to beat them in the French Cup. Some of their stars could be rested again for this French League Cup tie and although Toulouse were thumped 4-0 by Monaco in their last outing, that was their first away game in seven in which they failed to score.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

EXPERT VERDICT: Feyenoord have gone off the boil recently and they are worth taking on at home to Heerenveen. The home side have lost their last three league games, while the Super Frisians won at Willem II last time out.

RECOMMENDATION: Heerenveen

KEY STAT: Gladbach have lost one of their last seven domestic away games

EXPERT VERDICT: Borussia Monchengladbach resumed after the winter break with a 3-1 loss at home to title-chasing Borussia Dortmund but they remain in fourth place and can cement their position this weekend. They travel to mid-table Mainz, who have lost their last two matches and have failed to score in their last three.

NHL notebook: Ducks' Horcoff suspended 20 games
By The Sports Xchange

The NHL suspended Anaheim Ducks forward Shawn Horcoff for 20 games without pay on Tuesday for a violation of the league's performance enhancing substances program.
The league made the announcement on Tuesday and offered no additional comment. The suspension will cost Horcoff $357,526.88 based on his annual salary of $1.75 million. According to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the suspension means Horcoff receives a mandatory referral to the NHL/NHLPA Program for Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health for evaluation and potential treatment.
In 45 games for the Ducks this season, the 37-year-old Horcoff has six goals, four assists and 30 penalty minutes. The 37-year-old was drafted by Edmonton in 1998 and spent 12 of his 16 years in the NHL with the Oilers, scoring 447 of his 506 career points for the team. In the two previous seasons before signing with the Ducks, Horcoff played for Dallas. The veteran is six games short of 1,000 in his career.

---The Florida Panthers finalized a six-year, $35 million deal with young center Aleksander Barkov.
The 20-year-old Finland native was set to become a restricted free agent during the summer and the Panthers wanted to secure their future with the talented newcomer.
Barkov, the team's second overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, has scored 12 goals and added 18 assists in 38 games this season.

---The Chicago Blackhawks reached agreement with longtime general manager Stan Bowman on a three-year contract extension through the 2020-21 season.
Bowman has served as the club's general manager for nine years and has been with the Blackhawks for 15 years. He is the first general manager in the salary cap era to put together teams that won three Stanley Cup championships.

The Winnipeg Jets activated center Mark Scheifele after he spent three weeks on injured reserve and placed forward Mathieu Perreault on injured reserve.
Scheifele had been out since Jan. 7 with a lower-body injury, missing seven games. At the time Scheifele was hurt, he had two goals and 11 assists in 37 games. Scheifele also missed four games after Christmas because of a concussion.
Perreault, the team's third leading scorer with 31 points, suffered a lower-body injury (reportedly his back) during Saturday's 3-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils. The move to injured reserve was retroactive to Jan. 23.

---Forward Craig Adams officially announced his retirement after 14 NHL seasons.
The 37-year-old Adams played on two Stanley Cup winners with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006 and the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009.
In 951 career NHL regular-season games with the Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks and Penguins, he totaled 55 goals and 105 assists. He played in an additional 106 playoff begins since starting his career with Carolina during the 2000-2001 season after four years at Harvard.
Adams played in 70 regular-season games for the Penguins in 2014-15 and finished with one goal and six assists.

---The Detroit Red Wings recalled center Joakim Andersson from Grand Rapids and sent left winger Eric Tangradi and defenseman Nick Jensen to the American Hockey League team.
Andersson, a fourth-line center, has three points in 26 games for the Red Wings this season and 36 points in 202 career regular-season games for Detroit since 2011-12.
Tangradi made his Detroit debut in a 4-2 win on Monday night over the New York Islanders. He leads Grand Rapids in scoring this season with 16 goals and 31 points. Jensen was called up Sunday but did not see action with the Red Wings. In the past three seasons with Grand Rapids, he totaled eight goals and 36 assists. This season, he has two goals and six assists in 39 games for the Griffins.

---The Dallas Stars reassigned defenseman Esa Lindell to Texas of the American Hockey League.
The 21-year-old played in four games for Dallas with scoring a point during his call-up. He made his NHL debut for the Stars on Jan. 19 against the Los Angeles Kings.

Preview: Maple Leafs (13-21) at Lightning (24-18)

Date: January 27, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Ben Bishop and the Tampa Bay Lightning took a step back last time out after a dominant stretch by the team and its trusty goaltender.

A matchup with the punchless Toronto Maple Leafs could be exactly what both need to bounce back.

While the Lightning attempt to enter the All-Star break with some renewed momentum, the Maple Leafs simply hope to build some when the teams meet Wednesday night.

The Lightning's season-high seven-game winning streak came undone by one bad period Saturday at Florida, where the upstart Panthers increased their lead on their in-state rivals in the Atlantic Division with a 5-2 victory. Four of those goals came during a second period in which Tampa Bay (26-18-4) was outshot by a 19-5 margin.

'We got away (from) what's made us successful the past couple games,' captain Steven Stamkos said.

After allowing just four goals total in winning his four previous starts, Bishop permitted four on 30 shots before being removed at the second intermission.

The All-Star netminder likely won't see such a barrage from a Maple Leafs team that's scored a mere 11 goals in losing eight of nine, and none in 23 power-play chances over the last eight.

'We have lots of work to do,' coach Mike Babcock said. 'When you see the really good teams play and you see their talent base, you see where we've got to get to and we all understand that. It's going to be a process. That doesn't make it any easier on game night.'

Toronto (17-21-9) had showed signs of slight progress by earning at least one point in three straight prior to Tuesday's 5-1 defeat at Florida, now seven points ahead of the fourth-place Lightning in the Atlantic. The Maple Leafs were outscored 5-0 over the final two periods in dropping a third straight.

'They got going, we made mistakes and they capitalized,' Babcock said. 'We had lots of chances, too, but we didn't capitalize. We've seen that before.'

Toronto hasn't recorded a power-play goal since James van Riemsdyk fractured his foot on Jan. 9, though it's lacked production from most of its top healthy forwards of late. Leo Komarov has scored just one of his team-leading 16 goals in the past 15 games, Tyler Bozak has none in 13 straight and P.A. Parenteau has two assists over his last nine.

Nazem Kadri has scored in two straight, however, after registering the game's first goal on Tuesday.

Tampa Bay continues to get consistent offense from Nikita Kucherov, who assisted on Victor Hedman's goal Saturday to extend his point streak to eight games. The 22-year-old has six goals and five assists over that span and 28 points in 22 games since Dec. 5, second only to Patrick Kane's 32 for most in the league during that period.

Hedman has 10 points over his last eight games while remaining a vital part of a penalty kill that's 41 of 45 during a 15-game stretch.

After James Reimer started Tuesday's loss, Jonathan Bernier will get the nod for this one. Bernier owns a 2.57 goals-against average over his past five starts but has lost two straight, coming up with 42 saves in a 3-2 defeat at Boston on Jan. 16 and surrendering seven goals at San Jose a week earlier.

Bernier made 22 saves in Toronto's 5-4 home overtime loss to the Lightning on Dec. 15, in which Kucherov and Vladislav Namestnikov each posted a goal and an assist.

The Maple Leafs have lost three straight at Tampa Bay and five of the last seven overall in the series.

Preview: Flyers (18-18) at Capitals (33-8)

Date: January 27, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

With two weather postponements and the All-Star break, the Washington Capitals will end up playing one game in 13 days before returning to action Feb. 2.

That one game might prove to not be all that taxing, with the Philadelphia Flyers visiting Wednesday night needing to beat the best team in hockey to avoid entering the break with a four-game losing streak. The Capitals, meanwhile, are in position to match the longest home winning streak in franchise history.

Washington (35-8-3) had the first two of a five-game homestand straddling the break postponed due to the East Coast snowstorm over the weekend, so it hasn't played since a 6-3 win in Columbus on Jan. 19.

Nicklas Backstrom scored twice and Evgeny Kuznetsov had four assists, giving the him seven in his last two games and 10 points in four. Andre Burakovsky scored and has seven of his 17 points in the last five games, while Marcus Johansson has a goal in three straight.

"Right now it feels like we have good balance in the group," Backstrom said. "We're working hard, all four lines."

The power play was 2 for 2 with goals from Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin, giving the Capitals an 11-for-32 mark in the last 11 games. Even so, coach Barry Trotz probably isn't displeased with the extra time off.

"I thought we lacked a little bit of juice today," Trotz told the team's official website. "I think the three (games) in four (nights) caught up with us a little bit. And I thought (the Blue Jackets) came out really well. I thought (goaltender Braden Holtby) was really good.

" ... Obviously our power play set the tone; we scored right away so we just kept them out there and we got two. That gave us some separation."

Refreshed, the Capitals are in position to match a 13-game home winning streak from 2009-10 as their longest ever.

Washington opened the season series with a 5-2 win at Philadelphia on Nov. 12, though the Flyers have taken six of the last eight meetings.

Philadelphia (20-18-8) also had a game postponed Saturday but returned Monday to similar results - a 3-2 home loss to Boston for its third straight one-goal regulation defeat. The Flyers fell behind 2-0 in the first period before Wayne Simmonds scored twice, but they were denied a point on Brett Connolly's goal with 1:54 left.

"You push so hard all night to try and get a point out of it and come up empty-handed," center Brayden Schenn told the team's official website. "So we have to try and throw this one behind us because if we dwell on this one too much, we're going to go into Washington and it's not going to be a pretty game if we keep thinking about this one."

The losing streak has come with the Flyers going 5 for 13 on the power play, but they've wiped that out in the last two games by going 4 for 8 on the penalty kill.

Steve Mason is expected to be in goal for the Flyers. He's faced an average of 35.8 shots in his last four games and is in danger of matching a season-worst four-game losing streak.

He's gone 5-4-2 with a 3.34 goals-against average in his last 12 games against Washington.

Holtby is 24-2-2 with a 1.94 GAA over his last 29 games but has posted a 3.26 mark and 3-4-3 record in his last 11 appearances in the series.

Preview: Predators (21-18) at Flames (20-23)

Date: January 27, 2016 9:30 PM EDT

While the Calgary Flames can boast some very impressive accomplishments this season, they would surely exchange those for being in better position at the All-Star break.

Calgary heads into its final game before the layoff Wednesday night looking to rebound from a disappointing road trip in a matchup with the Nashville Predators.

The Flames ended a five-year playoff drought last season and surprised many with a first-round win over Vancouver before falling to Anaheim in the Western Conference semifinals.

With that success came expectations, and Calgary has been unable to meet those through the first half.

Although the Flames (21-23-3) won seven straight in December - their longest streak in 10 years - and set a franchise record with 11 consecutive home victories, they are 13th in the conference and 10 points out of a playoff spot.

A slow start and failure to capitalize on the power play sent Calgary to a 2-1 loss at Dallas on Monday, capping a 1-3-1 trip. Joe Colborne scored early in the third period after Karri Ramo allowed two goals 80 seconds apart in the second.

'We kind of woke up too late to play,' said Ramo, whose team was outshot 10-3 in the opening period. 'Against a team like that, you have to start pushing right away.'

Calgary was scoreless on five power-play chances for the second straight game and is 2 for 21 in the past six.

"We got to start from the get-go next game," captain Mark Giordano said. "We have one more before the break that we have to have, and then we'll get some rest and go from there."

It's no surprise that Johnny Gaudreau's production is tied directly to Calgary's success. The Flames are 11-2-0 in games Gaudreau scores at least one goal and 10-21-3 when he fails to find the net.

He's also been a much more productive player at home, tallying 17 goals and 33 of his team-leading 46 points there. He has just three goals and 13 points in 24 road contests.

Nashville (23-18-8) has an opportunity to head into the break with its longest win streak of the season after beating Vancouver 2-1 on Tuesday. James Neal snapped a tie with 4:44 remaining and Pekka Rinne turned aside 28 shots to keep the Predators perfect on their four-game trip through Canada.

'We're fighting to play for a Stanley Cup here," Neal said. "And right now with how tight the West is, you have to do anything you can to grab points to get into the playoffs. That's where our team is at.'

Defense and goaltending have keyed Nashville's three straight wins. After allowing 3.5 goals during a 2-6-2 stretch, the Predators have surrendered one in each game during the run.

Rinne has a .963 save percentage in those three games but has only played once this season on consecutive days. He's also never fared well in Calgary, going 1-5-0 with a 3.48 goals-against average in nine starts.

Backup Carter Hutton stopped 29 shots in a 3-0 victory over Minnesota on Jan. 16 in his most recent appearance.

He could be asked to help the Predators win four consecutive road games for the first time since Dec. 31, 2010-Jan. 8, 2011.

Kris Russell's overtime goal lifted the Flames to a 2-1 victory at Nashville on Dec. 15, their fourth consecutive win in the series.

The Predators are 8-1-3 against Canadian teams this season.

Preview: Avalanche (25-22) at Kings (28-15)

Date: January 27, 2016 10:30 PM EDT

Though Semyon Varlamov has yet to know the extent of his legal troubles, they've already impacted the Colorado Avalanche in the short term.

With their No. 1 goaltender still away from the team, the Avalanche attempt to shake off a lopsided loss when they visit the Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles Kings Wednesday night.

Varlamov's superb play carried Colorado (26-22-3) to four consecutive wins entering Tuesday's game at San Jose, which he missed as a defendant in a civil trial brought by his ex-girlfriend over an alleged domestic violence incident in October 2013. In his absence, fill-ins Calvin Pickard and Roman Will surrendered five goals on 23 shots as the Avalanche were routed 6-1.

Varlamov had yielded only four goals total during the streak, and his performance has been instrumental to Colorado's rise in the standings over the past two months. He's amassed a 13-4-2 record and a 2.23 goals-against average in 19 starts since Dec. 7.

Near the bottom of the league in points entering December, the Avalanche have gone 17-8-2 since to climb to eighth in the Western Conference.

After turning in two straight solid efforts that included a 27-save shutout of New Jersey on Jan. 14, Pickard allowed four goals on 20 shots in two periods against the Sharks. He's expected to draw another start Wednesday despite dealing with a flu bug that's also affected a few other Avalanche players.

'I don't want to use the word `distraction' but we had three guys sick this morning," coach Patrick Roy said. "It's hard enough to play when you're 100 percent.'

Pickard was pulled in the first period of his lone career meeting with Los Angeles (30-15-3), a 5-2 Colorado home loss on March 10 that extended the Kings' recent success in this series. The 23-year-old allowed three goals on eight shots.

The Kings won their sixth straight over Colorado with a 2-1 victory at Staples Center on Oct. 18, but Varlamov recorded 30 saves and Tyson Barrie had two goals and two assists as the Avalanche won 4-1 in Denver on Jan. 4.

Colorado went 3 of 5 on the power play in that matchup but is 2 of 23 over its last nine games. The Avalanche have 10 goals total in their past six as they face longtime nemesis Jonathan Quick.

Quick is 13-4-1 with a 2.25 GAA in 19 career starts against Colorado and owns a 1.32 GAA in winning his last six. The All-Star has been particularly dominant on home ice, where he's 8-1-1 with a 1.57 GAA in 10 starts and registered 22 saves in the most recent matchup at Staples Center.

Quick does enter this one having allowed three goals each in consecutive losses to Minnesota and Arizona. He hasn't lost three straight since season-opening defeats to San Jose, Arizona and Vancouver.

The Kings avoided their own three-game skid with a comeback Sunday in San Jose. After Vincent Lecavalier tied the game with 12.2 seconds left in regulation, Marian Gaborik scored with 53.8 seconds remaining in overtime to give Los Angeles a 3-2 victory.

'To pull off a win like this, it showed the character of this team and being resilient and getting timely goals,' center Anze Kopitar said. 'We'll certainly take it.'

Gaborik ended a 10-game goal drought while the rejuvenated Lecavalier scored his fourth in six games, matching his total in his final 45 with Philadelphia. The 35-year-old was acquired from the Flyers on Jan. 6.

The Kings' Tyler Toffoli and Colorado's Matt Duchene, both of whom lead their teams with 22 goals, each have two in the season series.

Grand Salami - January

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

NBA notebook: Clippers' Griffin breaks hand in fight
By The Sports Xchange

His return from a torn quadriceps imminent, five-time All-Star Blake Griffin is again weeks from playing for the Los Angeles Clippers.
Griffin fractured the fourth metacarpal in his right hand and reportedly suffered the injury punching one of the team's equipment managers outside of a Toronto restaurant on Saturday. According to the Orange County Register, the two had an argument inside the establishment and once outside, Griffin hit the staff member multiple times.
The Clippers confirmed that Griffin was injured while throwing a punch but gave no additional details. Griffin returned to Los Angeles on Monday for X-rays and had surgery on Tuesday, the team announced. He will be sidelined for four to six weeks.
"This conduct has no place in our organization and this incident does not represent who we are as a team," the Clippers said in a statement. "We are conducting a full investigation with assistance from the NBA. At the conclusion of the investigation, appropriate action will be taken."

---Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal was diagnosed with a broken nose and concussion that sidelined him for Tuesday night's game against the Toronto Raptors.
The Wizards said Beal's status is day to day. According to the NBA's concussion policy, he must complete the Return to Participation Exertion Protocol before he's cleared to play again.
Beal was injured during the second quarter of Monday night's 116-91 loss to Boston while guarding Celtics guard Marcus Smart, whose forearm struck Beal in the face. He left the court with four points and blood pouring from his nose.

---Cleveland Cavaliers general manager David Griffin said that there are no discussions with any NBA teams about a deal for forward Kevin Love.
"You'd have to go a long way to convince me that we're a better team winning in the Finals without a player like Kevin on our team," Griffin said on ESPN 850 AM in Cleveland. "We've never once put together an offer involving Kevin, nor have we taken a call on an offer for Kevin."
Love joined the Cavaliers before the 2014-15 season, signing a five-year, $112 million contract. As of Jan. 15, he was eligible for a trade, fueling speculation that the Cavs might have something brewing.
Since point guard Kyrie Irving returned in December from his injury absence, Love is averaging 15.6 points per game and shooting 42 percent from the field. :ast week, Griffin fired coach David Blatt and replaced him with Tyronn Lue. How that impacts Love's production remains to be seen.

---Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose is day to day with hamstring and back injuries.
The Bulls started Aaron Brooks in the second half of Monday's loss to the Miami Heat after Rose left late in the second quarter with four points in 13 minutes. Rose previously missed a three-game stretch with tightness in his hamstring.
Chicago was already without Kirk Hinrich and E'Twaun Moore because of injuries.

Three-pointer: Kidd back with Bucks
By Tony Mejia

Milwaukee will get its leader back on Tuesday, which means the next few weeks prior to the All-Star break are going to be vital for perhaps the Eastern Conference’s biggest underachievers.

The Bucks, considered to be a team on the rise after finishing last season at .500 and taking a couple of games off the Bulls in the playoffs, opened the season 0-3 and were 11-18 when Jason Kidd took his leave on Dec. 21 to undergo hip surgery, getting a metal prosthesis inserted to ease his stiffness and pain.

"I think people from the outside thought it was just going to be automatic and we'd pick up from last year," Kidd told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "Expectations were a lot higher. But also, we had new pieces, with Jabari (Parker) being one of them, and Moose (Greg Monroe). Our defense did take a step back. Sometimes, you have to get games under your belt and see the good and bad and hopefully make the adjustments. As you can see, the guys are starting to play as a team."

Assistant Joe Prunty fared slightly better than Kidd upon taking over on an interim basis, but Saturday night’s 116-89 loss in New Orleans dropped the Bucks to 8-9 (10-7 ATS) under his guidance. Once again, the Bucks failed to defend the 3-point line and went into lulls offensively. Kidd has expressed his displeasure with the team’s defense and will look to place more of an emphasis on that end of the floor upon his return against Orlando. The under prevailed in six of Milwaukee’s 11 wins when Kidd was at the helm, so look for his return to be a major catalyst in the team picking up its attention to detail at that end of the floor.

Milwaukee gave up 100 or more points in 13 of the 17 games where Prunty filled in. The situation has been so poor that 116 scored by the Pelicans over the weekend ranked as only the fourth-highest total given up during his stint. Houston and New Orleans combined for 32 3-pointers in handing the Bucks their last two loss.

Michael Carter-Williams was expected to lead the charge in taking a step forward in his own development, but he’s been wildly inconsistent. Having Kidd back can only aid his development. He’s averaged 11.3 points in January, but comes off his best shooting game of the season, going 9-for-12 in New Orleans. If the Bucks can get him going, they will have a decent shot at righting the ship and coming through on their short-term goal.

"We would like to finish on a high note before the (All-Star) break and then come back after the break ready to make a push," Kidd said.

Following Tuesday’s home date with Orlando, Milwaukee faces a back-to-back on Thursday and Friday, visiting Memphis and returning home to face injury-riddled Miami. The Bucks open February on the West Coast for games at Sacramento, Portland and Utah, a stretch that will be followed up by a few days off and home dates with the Celtics and Wizards.

Clips taking cautious approach with Griffin

L.A. power forward Blake Grifffin was expected to be back in action this past weekend, or at the very least, ready to go as the Clips closed out a five-game Eastern road swing. Neither happened.

Griffin was sent home to L.A. despite the organization stressing that the change in plans was not setback-related. He won’t play in stops at Indiana and Atlanta and was considered doubtful for a meeting with the Lakers on Jan. 29. After a fight with a member of the team's equipment staff, he's now expected to be out another 4-6 weeks.

Griffin hasn’t played since posting a Christmas night double-double in helping rout the Lakers, suffering a partially torn tendon in his left quad. The Clippers won the first nine games without him, but enter the week with losses in three of their last five as his absence has begun to catch up to them. Sunday’s 112-94 loss in Toronto was the team’s worst of the season, so it’s going to be interesting to see how Doc Rivers prepares his team to bounce back as they wrap up the road trip with a Tuesday-Wednesday back-to-back against the Pacers and Hawks. Both teams have winning records, which is of importance since the Clippers haven’t seen many teams with more wins than losses throughout Griffin’s absence. L.A. is just 2-2 against teams over .500 without their star power forward.

Given the stiff competition for reserve spots in the West, Griffin’s run of five consecutive All-Star nods will certainly end on Thursday despite averages of 23.2 points, 8.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists over 30 games.

Warriors/Spurs blowout fallout

When it was all over, Gregg Popovich had jokes.

"We almost got them," said the Spurs coach following a 120-90 blowout loss at Golden State. "My opening comment here will be, I'm just glad my general manager wasn't in the locker room, because it might have gotten me fired."

San Antonio fields the team least likely to let a loss like the one suffered on Monday night fester. The 30-point deficit was the largest the Spurs have lost by since 2012, when they fell in Portland by 40. The Warriors shot over 50 percent, won every quarter and out-rebounded San Antonio.

Since the Spurs had won 13 consecutive games prior to the demolition in Oakland, they’ve already been installed as a double-digit favorite against Houston on Wednesday. They’re 17-6-1 at home against the spread and are 24-0 overall, so you can expect they’ll be at their best against the Rockets. San Antonio hasn’t lost consecutive games all season and has covered the spread after every setback, winning by double-digits each time.

The Warriors, now 21-0 at home, have won four straight and are a whopping 15.5-point favorite against Dallas. The Mavericks handed Golden State its worst loss of the season by a 114-91 count on Dec. 30. The teams will play twice more in March, which will give us an opportunity to see whether the lopsided setback was a fluke or the beginning of an interesting trend. The over is 7-3 in the Warriors last 10 games. It’s also 4-0 of late for the Mavs.

Preview: Suns (14-32) at Cavaliers (31-12)

Date: January 27, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

New Cleveland Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue continues to reiterate that he wants his team to push the pace and they'll next face an opponent willing to do that, albeit a lowly one.

The Cavaliers should be primed to get their running game untracked Wednesday night against a short-handed Phoenix Suns team that has lost 11 in a row on the road.

Lue earned his first win in his second game in charge in Monday's 114-107 home victory over Minnesota. LeBron James had 25 points and nine assists and Tristan Thompson added 19 points and 12 boards.

The coach was presented the game ball in the locker room following the win. At Tuesday's practice, he once again stated that he wants Cleveland (31-12) to get into better shape in order to play at a faster tempo.

"It's tough but I told them at the expense of playing more guys or at the expense of losing a couple games, we're looking forward to playing in the playoffs and we've got to get in shape for the playoffs," Lue said. "And I believe that if you're in shape, it makes you tougher mentally and physically and you can do things harder and you things better and you don't give into fatigue."

The Cavaliers average 95.0 possessions per 48 minutes for the league's third-slowest tempo.

Phoenix (14-32) averages 100.7 to rank fourth, although the injury-plagued Suns are unlikely to pose much of a threat Wednesday.

They are already without the injured Eric Bledsoe and Brandon Knight missed his third straight game Tuesday with a strained groin.

The result was an embarrassing 113-103 loss at Philadelphia as Phoenix was swept by the NBA's worst team. Archie Goodwin scored a season-high 26 points for the Suns, who trailed by as many as 19 points in the second half before their rally fell short.

'You don't want to get down big and try to have to make comebacks,' coach Jeff Hornacek said.

Phoenix is enduring its longest road slide since dropping 12 in a row in 2012-13. The Suns have dropped seven straight on the road to teams led by James and are 2-6 in the second of back-to-back games.

It's possible James will become the 17th player in NBA history to reach 26,000 career points since he needs 36, although an expected blowout would cut his minutes down and lessen those chances.

The Cavaliers won 101-97 at Phoenix on Dec. 28. Kyrie Irving scored 22 points, including a 3-pointer with 22 seconds left that put Cleveland up by four.

T.J. Warren led the Suns with 23 points in that game and Knight added 18.

Former Cavs coach David Blatt gave Tristan Thompson his first start in over a month that night, leading to nine in a row for the center. He then went back to the bench for a five-game stretch before Lue started him Monday, leading to Thompson's strong effort.

Cleveland is 11-2 when Thompson starts.

"I think starting Tristan does give a lot of energy, you can put him on 4s or 5s to match up," Lue said. "That's something that we're going to look at going forward."

Preview: Nuggets (17-28) at Celtics (25-21)

Date: January 27, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

Isaiah Thomas has ignited a turnaround for the Boston Celtics, and they may be able to maintain their home dominance over their next opponent if he remains hot.

The surging Celtics look to improve on an already sparkling mark in Boston against the Denver Nuggets when the two meet at TD Garden on Wednesday night.

Boston (25-21) has won two straight and four of the last six in this series, three of those coming as host to extend a impressive home stretch against Denver (17-28).

The Celtics have won the last five meetings in Boston and 21 of 24 dating to 1990. The Nuggets are 3-16 at TD Garden since it opened its doors for the 1995-96 season.

However, the final two games of Boston's current three-game win streak came on the road at Philadelphia and Washington. After dismantling the 76ers 112-92 on Sunday, Thomas led the Celtics to a 116-91 rout of the Wizards the next night.

The 5-foot-9 lefty shooter won a marquee point guard matchup against the Wizards' John Wall, logging his sixth straight 20-point game by finishing with 23 to go with nine assists in three quarters. Wall had 10 assists, but he turned the ball over four times and scored just eight points on 3-of-11 shooting.

Thomas has averaged 25.4 points and 6.4 assists in his last 10 games, helping Boston win six of the final eight.

"You always are excited when you're a guy like Isaiah who's got a chip on his shoulder to challenge himself against the best," said coach Brad Stevens, whose team has won three straight home games. "But I think Isaiah's pretty consistent regardless of who we're playing in how he approaches every night."

The Nuggets don't have the same All-Star caliber point guard, especially with Jameer Nelson missing the last five games with a sprained left wrist, and Thomas scored 33 points the last time he faced them while with Sacramento in February 2014.

The Celtics went cold offensively at 40.5 percent shooting while averaging 98.3 points in seven games Dec. 27-Jan. 10, but they've hit 45.7 percent in nine games since while averaging 112.6 points - short of only Golden State's 117.1 from Jan. 12-25.

While Boston will try to match a season-best winning streak set exactly one month ago, Denver is trying to avoid sinking into another lull.

The Nuggets have enjoyed positive stretches this season, logging wins in four of six, four of five and five of six games, but it's the long droughts that have hurt them: losses in four of five and nine of 10 along with an eight-game losing skid.

They dropped three of their final four on an eight-game homestand to negate a positive start. Denver had opened its longest home stretch of the season with wins in three of four, including a 112-110 victory over NBA-leading Golden State on Jan. 13.

Monday's flat 119-105 loss to Atlanta closed the 4-4 homestand on a down note before the Nuggets play eight of the next 10 on the road - where they've lost five of six.

"It's definitely frustrating only going .500 (on the homestand)," said Will Barton, who scored a team-high 21 points against the Hawks. "We did some good things but we've got to figure out how to bring it every night."

Denver has followed a solid five-game defensive stretch in which it allowed an average of 93.0 points on 41.8 percent shooting by surrendering 111.6 on 49.4 percent over its last five.

Preview: 76ers (7-39) at Pistons (24-21)

Date: January 27, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

If Reggie Jackson can maintain his level of play from Monday's victory, the Detroit Pistons may finally reach the postseason for the first time this decade.

Jackson tries to follow up a game that had his coach singing his praises as the Pistons host the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night.

He's averaging team highs of 19.2 points and 6.6 assists, and had 29 points in a 95-92 victory over Utah, but what earned Stan Van Gundy's praise was Jackson's defensive effort as he harassed Trey Burke into an 0-for-8 shooting performance. Though the Jazz scored 33 points in the fourth quarter, Detroit (24-21) limited the Jazz to 40 percent shooting and never trailed to gain a split of its four-game trip.

'He had a hell of a game and forget the offense,' Van Gundy said. 'That is the most consistent effort from start to finish defensively that I've seen Reggie make since we've had him.

'I've never seen him work to that level like he did tonight. ... I thought our team as a whole made that effort defensively.'

The team's effort was one of its best of the season, just the fifth time it limited an opponent to 40.0 percent and far better than its season mark of 45.4 percent. The latter figure is a strong bell weather of the Pistons' success - they're 17-6 when holding opponents at or below that percentage.

It was also Jackson's best game offensively since scoring 31 at Chicago on Dec. 18. He made 12 of 19 shots versus the Jazz after going a combined 15 for 41 in the first three games of the road swing, and the Pistons were outscored by 28 when he was on the floor in their losses at New Orleans and Denver prior to Monday's victory.

Jackson and Detroit now have the opportunity use Philadelphia (7-39) as a momentum-builder for its home game Friday versus Central-leading Cleveland. The Pistons have already beaten the 76ers once this season, cruising to 107-95 road win Dec. 11 as Jackson had nine points and three assists in a 27-7 run over the first 8:36 that Philadelphia could not overcome.

A consistent driver, Jackson is fourth in the NBA in drives with 11.2 per game and is second in scoring in those situations, averaging 7.7 points. That bodes well against a 76ers team that is soft defensively in the interior, giving up 44.0 points per game to rank 22nd in the league.

That could be an issue since rookie center Jahlil Okafor has been ruled out for a second straight game due to illness. Philadelphia, though, overcame his absence to finish a season sweep of Phoenix with a 113-103 victory Tuesday behind Ish Smith, who had 20 points, nine assists and eight rebounds as eight Sixers scored in double figures.

'We're just going out there trying to collect wins,' said Smith, who has five 20-point games in 14 contests since being re-acquired on Dec. 24 via trade from New Orleans.

He averaged 12.0 points in 25 games with the 76ers last season after being dealt from Oklahoma City.

Smith has a 3.03 assist-to-turnover ratio with Philadelphia, which has given up 18.2 points per game off turnovers since he arrived - a marked improvement from its NBA-worst average of 21.6.

Preview: Rockets (25-22) at Spurs (38-7)

Date: January 27, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

Sugarcoating a 30-point loss in a showdown with the defending NBA champions simply isn't the San Antonio Spurs' style. They shrugged their shoulders, accepted the defeat and moved on before they even reached the airport.

San Antonio had the same mentality after losing to the Houston Rockets on Christmas Day and went on to win 13 in a row. It hasn't lost back-to-back games all season, and it'll try to avoid another losing streak against the visiting Rockets on Wednesday night.

Tim Duncan sat out Monday's 120-90 loss at Golden State because of right knee soreness, but the Spurs (38-7) weren't making any excuses. In a matchup featuring the best combined winning percentage in NBA history this late into a season, they committed eight of their season-high 26 turnovers in the first quarter and never led.

Kawhi Leonard scored 16 points for San Antonio, which turned it over 22 times over their previous three games combined. LaMarcus Aldridge admitted "I was bad," going 2 of 9 from the floor and finishing with five points - his fewest when playing at least 20 minutes since 2010.

Coach Gregg Popovich called it "men among boys," but the Spurs aren't dwelling on having their winning streak snapped. It was their first loss in eight games this season without Duncan, who also won't play Wednesday.

"It's the (45th) game of the season. It's not like we're eliminated," said Manu Ginobili, who went 1 of 6 from the field after scoring a season-high 20 points in Friday's win over the Los Angeles Lakers. "We got our butts kicked, that's for sure. We need to be thinking more about Houston."

The Spurs had won 20 of their previous 21, with the only defeat in that stretch an 88-84 loss at Houston on Dec. 25. They avenged that defeat Jan. 2, getting 24 points from Aldridge and 22 from Leonard in a 121-103 home victory.

Dwight Howard had a double-double in each of those matchups for the Rockets (25-22) and finished with one in each of the 10 games he played prior to sitting out the last three because of a sprained left ankle.

Houston has done just fine without him, winning each contest after beginning a three-game trip with Monday's 112-111 win over New Orleans. Trevor Ariza has taken a more active role with Howard out and is averaging 26.3 points while shooting 60.9 percent, including 19 of 31 from 3-point range.

Ariza had 29 points in Sunday's win over Dallas before scoring a season-high 31 and hitting eight of Houston's season-high 19 3s against the Pelicans. He averaged 11.3 points and shot 39.5 percent from the field over his first 43 games.

'I'm just making shots,' Ariza said. 'I don't think I am really doing anything different. What's been working for us is the game has more of a flow to it. The ball's been moving a lot better than it has previously.'

James Harden is averaging 30.3 points over his last four after finishing with 35 against the Pelicans. He's helped Houston win nine of 12 since the loss to San Antonio to move three games over .500 for the first time this season.

Interim coach J.B. Bickerstaff said Howard could return this week, but he isn't sure if it will be against the Spurs or Friday at Oklahoma City.

'We plan on having him on the trip,' Bickerstaff said. 'He worked out (Monday) and we'll see how he responds. He'll get an opportunity to work more and then we'll see how it goes from there.'

San Antonio has won three of the last four meetings after Houston won the previous six. Harden is shooting just 36 percent over the last three.
