KEY STAT: Marseille have not lost in 11 games

EXPERT VERDICT: Marseille have been struggling for consistency but crucially they are not losing games. L’OM have shown their best form away from Stade Velodrome and they should be able to qualify from this League Cup tie in 90 minutes. The draw is the biggest concern as Marseille have drawn five of their last nine matches.

RECOMMENDATION: Marseille

KEY STAT: Chelsea have scored eight goals in four league games under Guus Hiddink

EXPERT VERDICT: West Brom’s form is up and down. They beat Newcastle and Stoke in their last two league games but lost to Bournemouth and Swansea before that and drew 2-2 with Bristol City in the cup. Chelsea are showing signs of life under Guus Hiddink, though, going unbeaten in their last five matches.

RECOMMENDATION: Chelsea

KEY STAT: City have not kept a clean sheet in 13 home games

EXPERT VERDICT: Manchester City have a terrible defensive record when captain Vincent Kompany is not in the side and goals could be on the cards with the Belgian centre-half set to miss out again. City and Everton boast potent options going forward so backing both teams to score looks a sensible approach.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: Sunderland have conceded a league-high 28 away goals

EXPERT VERDICT: Swansea remain in trouble but are slowly improving under Alan Curtis, avoiding defeat in three of five league games under the Swans’ interim manager. But Sunderland’s woes continue. The Black Cats remain second from bottom and have just four points from ten away games.

RECOMMENDATION: Swansea

KEY STAT: Watford have scored in each of their last 11 league games

EXPERT VERDICT: Southampton’s slide continues and Saturday’s FA Cup defeat to Crystal Palace means the Saints have now won just once in their last ten outings. Watford, meanwhile, are going from strength to strength and have lost just two of nine Premier League away games this season.

RECOMMENDATION: Watford

KEY STAT: Stoke have kept three clean sheets in their last four home league games

EXPERT VERDICT: Norwich produced their best performance of the season to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford but the Canaries have generally failed to convince on the road and might struggle at the Britannia Stadium. Stoke should oblige at cramped odds. They have not conceded many at home and Norwich may struggle to break them down.

RECOMMENDATION: Stoke to win 2-0

Bruins, Flyers square off

BOSTON BRUINS (21-15-5) at PHILADELPHIA FLYERS (18-15-7)
NHL Wednesday Night Rivalry Game
Face-off: Wednesday, 8:00 p.m. ET
Line: N/A

Philadelphia Flyers look to extend their three-game winning streak against reeling Boston Bruins.

The Bruins have been a streaky team throughout this half-season’s worth of NHL play: Three times they’ve won five of six, and three times they’ve lost three straight. Boston, who has lost seven of its last nine overall, looks to avoid a fourth three-game skid against a Flyers squad that is coming off consecutive victories over Montreal, Minnesota, and the New York Islanders.

Shayne Gostisbehere (7 G, 9 A, 16 PTS), a rookie revelation that has helped shore up the Philadelphia blueline and provide offense, is day-to-day after a knee-on-knee collision last Thursday. The Bruins have been lethal on the road this season, boasting a 12-4-3 record, and are 9-2 in their last 11 games at Philadelphia. Philadelphia has won its past five home games.

Special teams should play a large role in determining this match-up: The Bruins own the league’s second-best power play (28.1%) and generates 0.8 power-play goals per game, also good for second overall. The Flyers, meanwhile, own the league’s third-worst power play (15.8%) and average just 2.3 goals per game, third fewest in the NHL. As a favorite against Eastern Conference opponents, the Bruins are 9-4 this season; as an underdog this year, the Flyers are 12-17.

At 7-10-5, the Flyers appeared to be heading toward another lost season, but the goaltending tandem of Steve Mason (9-10-5, 2.72 GAA, 91.3% SV%) and Michal Neuvirth (9-5-2, 2.12 GAA, 93.4% SV%) has helped offset sluggish seasons by Claude Giroux (12 G, 18 A, 30 PTS) and Jakub Voracek (4 G, 26 A, 30 PTS). Mason has started Philadelphia’s last two games.

The aging Bruins are undergoing a bit of a transition this year, but still present a formidable roster of experienced, game-changing talents, including Patrice Bergeron (15 G, 23 A, 38 PTS) and Zdeno Chara (5 G, 17 A, 22 PTS). A resurgent season from Loui Eriksson (14 G, 20 A, 34 PTS), obtained in the infamous Tyler Seguin trade, has been a notable surprise. The Bruins deserved at least a point in the standings in their last game, but took a tough loss to the New York Rangers. Look for Boston to be acutely focused against Philadelphia.

Preview: Blue Jackets (13-25) at Maple Leafs (12-17)

Date: January 13, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets are among the worst teams in the Eastern Conference.

The Maple Leafs' chances of showing improvement will be much more daunting without James van Riemsdyk for at least six weeks.

After scoring once while losing the last two games, Toronto attempts to overcome the absence of its top scorer Wednesday night against the Blue Jackets.

The Maple Leafs (16-17-7) and Blue Jackets (15-24-4) have three playoff appearances between them over the past 10 seasons, and Columbus owns two of them.

While the Jackets have the fewest points in the NHL, Toronto enters the midway point of 2015-16 eight points back of a wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Closing that gap will be a lot tougher without van Riemsdyk, the team leader with 29 points who is out with a non-displaced fracture in his left foot.

The Leafs lost the left wing during Saturday's 7-0 loss at San Jose, two days after falling 2-1 at Los Angeles. That came after a promising 8-2-2 stretch.

"I think our team has gotten better every day and played harder and harder and so I like that," coach Mike Babcock said. "If you take out the last game, obviously we were no good. I like the direction we're going. I don't like the standings, but I like a lot of things about us.

"I know a lot more about the group than I did to start and who's going to be a part of things moving ahead, which is real important."

For now that includes Josh Leivo, who was recalled from the Toronto Marlies of the AHL to replace van Riemsdyk. The left wing had 30 points in 35 games for the Marlies, and he totaled three points in 16 games over the past two seasons with the Leafs.

"He's obviously done a real good job where he's at, now he gets an opportunity with us," Babcock told the team's official website. "We'll try to give him an opportunity and a good opportunity, and find out what we have. I think it's real important to find out what you have in your own group before you go looking elsewhere for help."

Columbus could use any sort of help as it seeks to avoid its first six-game road losing streak since Oct. 15-Nov. 14, 2013.

"We're in it right up to our eyeballs right now, as far as where we are as a team," coach John Tortorella told the team's official website. "We have to stay together and keep trying to get better."

That certainly didn't happen Tuesday when the Blue Jackets' overall skid reached four games with a 5-2 defeat to the New York Islanders. They were outshot 33-20, including 17-5 in the first period.

'It's unacceptable. It makes me sick,' Brandon Dubinsky fumed. 'The work wasn't there consistently. This is a man's league and we played like boys.'

Dubinsky didn't get a point after collecting six over the previous five games. He's got 18 in his last 20 matchups with Toronto, including three in the last two after notching an assist in a 6-3 home loss Oct. 16.

Scott Hartnell has totaled two goals and two assists over his past two meetings with the Maple Leafs, who pulled away with three unanswered tallies in the third period in October.

The left wing has one assist in 15 career visits to Toronto.

Preview: Bruins (19-15) at Flyers (17-15)

Date: January 13, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

The Philadelphia Flyers would be feeling much better about their recent surge had they not been forced to play catch-up after a difficult first six weeks of the season.

If the Boston Bruins can't snap out of their funk, they'll watch the Flyers slide right past them in the wild-card chase.

Philadelphia can extend its winning streak to four with a sixth consecutive home victory when the Bruins visit Wednesday night.

The Flyers (18-15-7) were outscored by 24 goals while going 7-10-5 through Nov. 25 and didn't win back-to-back games even once during the final month of that stretch. That slow start under rookie coach Dave Hakstol left them scrambling to make up points, which they've done recently.

Philadelphia has won three straight following a three-game skid and is 11-5-2 with a plus-9 scoring differential over the last six weeks. It improved to 7-1-1 at home in that span after beating the New York Islanders 4-0 on Saturday.

Sean Couturier and Michael Raffl had a goal and an assist apiece, Matt Read scored with a pair of assists, and Steve Mason had 20 saves in his third shutout of the season.

Despite the early struggles, the Flyers aren't far behind in the Eastern Conference wild-card race at the season's midway point.

"You need to be a consistent team throughout the year to be a playoff team," Hakstol said. "We're in a spot right now where we have to keep pushing to put ourselves into that position."

They won the last contest without promising rookie defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, who is dealing with a lower-body injury. He'll also sit out against the Bruins (21-15-5), whose 28.1 percent conversion rate on the power play is the best in the league.

Philadelphia is among the worst in the NHL with a 78.7 penalty-kill percentage, although opponents are 0 for 8 during its winning streak.

"Going forward, every single game for us is going to be huge," winger Jakub Voracek said. "Boston is a good team. It's a challenge for us, but we have to make sure we play physical and play smart."

Voracek assisted on Claude Giroux's overtime goal to give the Flyers a 5-4 win over the Bruins on Oct. 21, overcoming a two-goal deficit in the third period and snapping Boston's six-game winning streak in the series.

The Bruins have scored fewer than two goals five times during a 2-6-1 stretch, including consecutive 2-1 losses to Ottawa on Saturday and the New York Rangers on Monday. Those came after opening a five-game trip with Friday's 4-1 win at New Jersey.

"We have to learn to win tight games," coach Claude Julien said after the most recent defeat. "Need more desperation at the end. We were good for the first 40 minutes. The third period just wasn't as good."

Boston has one of the league's best road records at 12-4-3, but it could be experiencing some fatigue during a stretch of six games in eight nights that ends with a back-to-back set against Buffalo and Toronto on Friday and Saturday.

"We'll just keep plugging away and try and get the wins," said Tuukka Rask, who has stopped 66 of 70 shots over the last two. "Only thing is we have to find ways to score goals like we did in Jersey, but other than that, I think we're fine."

Rask is 1-5-1 with a 2.73 goals-against average during the Bruins' slump, but he's 6-0-1 with a 2.10 GAA in his last seven against the Flyers.

Mason beat Boston in the first meeting after going 0-2-2 with a 3.17 GAA over his previous five in the series.

Preview: Panthers (21-12) at Flames (18-20)

Date: January 13, 2016 9:30 PM EDT

The Florida Panthers' franchise-best winning streak has ended but the chance to make more club history still exists.

Following their first defeat in a month, the visiting Panthers can equal a team record with at least a point in a 14th straight game Wednesday night against the struggling Calgary Flames.

Florida (26-12-5) was fifth in the Atlantic Division and outside of playoff position in the Eastern Conference following a 3-1 loss at Boston on Dec. 12. A month later, the Panthers lead the division and own the second-most points in the East thanks to a 12-game win streak that ended with Monday's 3-2 overtime loss at Vancouver.

"We've been on quite a run for some time now," assistant coach John Madden said. "We did some good things (Monday), but we didn't do enough to win."

Roberto Luongo made 27 saves and Jonathan Huberdeau scored for the third time in four contests but the Panthers blew a 2-0 advantage in their third straight game - and fourth in five - decided by one goal.

Florida allowed 15 goals during the winning streak and Monday marked the first time in nine games it yielded more than two. Luongo posted a 1.31 goals-against average during his nine-game undefeated run.

'We've been playing close games a little bit too much,' said Huberdeau, who has four goals and 10 assists in 13 games. 'At least we got a point and are ready for the next game.'

Florida's 13-game point streak is a single-season record and one shy of the overall club mark that spanned the final two of 1995-96 and first 12 of 1996-97. The Panthers could have a good chance to match the record at Calgary (19-20-2), where they've won three of four and have earned at least a point in five straight.

The Flames have gone 1-4-0 at home since a franchise-best 11-game winning streak at the Saddledome. Despite overcoming a two-goal deficit to draw even and yielding a season-low 18 shots Monday, the Flames fell 5-4 at home to San Jose for their sixth defeat in 10 games since winning seven straight.

"It's disappointing," said forward Sean Monahan, who snapped an eight-game goal drought. "It gets frustrating, it gets tough but you've got to find a way to get mentally tough and grind those games out."

Calgary went 3 for 4 on the power play and scored one fewer goal than it did in its previous four home games. However, it gave up at least four for the second time in the last four at the Saddledome.

"You score four goals at home and it should be plenty to win," coach Bob Hartley said. "Very poor management of the game on our part."

Defenseman Mark Giordano has recorded a point in five straight and four goals and nine assists in the last 10. He was held without a point at Florida on Nov. 10, when David Jones scored twice and Monahan had the other goal in a 4-3 loss.

It's uncertain if Florida defenseman Aaron Ekblad, who's posted a plus-16 rating in the past 21 contests and hasn't had a minus game in that span, will miss a second straight contest with an upper-body injury.

There's no mystery surrounding the status of coach Gerard Gallant for Wednesday, as he'll be away from the team for his mother's funeral. Assistant Mike Kelly will be in charge.

Preview: Senators (17-17) at Ducks (15-17)

Date: January 13, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

The Ottawa Senators have had some embarrassing showings at both ends of the ice lately. Offensive inconsistency has been stopping the Anaheim Ducks from turning promising showings into a substantial run.

The two meet Wednesday night in Anaheim with each club looking to avoid a second straight loss.

The Senators (20-17-6) fell 7-1 in Washington on Sunday and have been outscored 26-11 in a 2-5-0 span. It was the second time they've allowed seven goals in that stretch, both coming on the road.

Ottawa has gone 2-9-1 away from home since starting the season 7-2-1 there.

"This league is about balance, finding balance, and we have to find our balance," coach Dave Cameron told the team's official website. "It's an individual thing more than anything. We're not going to beat them to death over this one. It's done.

"For the most part, your game plans don't change. Your team plays basically the same way, the same system, because you give your system around your team and what you have. The challenge is going to be the perseverance part. They have to have the ability to let it go and not beat themselves up over it. Can they? Well, that's an individual thing."

Mike Hoffman scored for Ottawa on Sunday and has been an individual bright spot. His 20 goals in 39 games are seven shy of his career-best 79-game total from last season, and his team-best plus-11 rating looks all the more impressive considering the Senators' minus-11 mark in non-shootout goals.

Their 15-goal scoring discrepancy in the last seven games is due in part to a 2-for-23 power-play effort and 15-for-23 performance on the penalty kill. They seem unlikely to become more productive with the man advantage against Anaheim, which has killed off all 26 penalties over the last seven games.

The Ducks (17-17-7) reached the halfway point in their season with Sunday's 2-1 home loss to Detroit, and they've split the first four of a season-high eight-game homestand. Anaheim has managed to go 5-2-1 in its last eight despite scoring 15 goals and getting limited to one or no goals five times.

"The margin of error is very slim when you're averaging less than two goals a game," said coach Bruce Boudreau, whose team has a league-worst 1.85 mark. "We had opportunities to score. We just didn't finish."

Corey Perry did once and has three goals in his last four games, but he's the only Duck with more than eight goals while every other team in the league has at least two 10-goal scorers.

Ryan Getzlaf has been part of the drop-off with three goals in 37 contests, and his 0.68 points per game matches his rookie mark for the lowest of his 11-season career.

Ottawa won both matchups last season by a 9-2 total. Andrew Hammond made 25 saves in a 3-0 win at Anaheim on Feb. 25, but he allowed all of the goals against the Capitals.

Craig Anderson is expected to return to the net with a chance at his 200th victory after ending a three-game losing streak with a 33-save effort in Saturday's 2-1 home win over Boston. Anderson has dropped his last five road starts with a 3.58 goals-against average and is 3-8-0 with a 3.25 mark against the Ducks.

Anaheim All-Star John Gibson hasn't given up more than three goals all season and has a 1.64 GAA in a 5-2-0 span.

Grand Salami - January

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

NBA notebook: Wizards' Wall to have knee checked
By The Sports Xchange

Washington Wizards point guard John Wall will undergo tests on his sore left knee.
Wall led the Wizards to a win at Chicago on Monday night and scored 17 points with 10 assists and five rebounds, but he continues to be bothered by soreness above his left knee.
Wall is averaging a career-best 19.6 points and 9.6 assists -- the second-best average in the NBA -- and has not missed a game this season despite dealing with multiple nagging injuries, including ankle and rib ailments.

---The Cleveland Cavaliers acquired the Portland Trail Blazers' protected 2020 second-round NBA Draft from the Orlando Magic in exchange for guard Joe Harris, the Sacramento Kings' 2017 protected second-round pick owned by the Cavs and cash.
Harris played in five games for the Cavaliers this season and 10 games for the Canton Charge in the NBA Development League. A second-round draft pick in 2014, Harris had foot surgery on Tuesday in Indianapolis to repair a fifth metatarsal apophysis.

---The Denver Nuggets signed guard Sean Kilpatrick to a 10-day contract.
Kilpatrick has started 21 of 22 games for the Delaware 87ers of the NBA Development League this season and is averaging 27.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.14 steals. He provides depth after Nuggets point guard Jameer Nelson missed Sunday's game against the Charlotte Hornets with a right hip injury and is listed as day to day.

Three-pointer: Clips to be tested
By Tony Mejia

The nonsensical hot take that the Clippers are better off without Blake Griffin is growing louder. The All-Star power forward, who was playing at an all-NBA level before being lost to torn quad tendon following a Christmas night win against the Lakers, has now watched his team win eight consecutive games without him.

For the record, they’re winning in spite of his absence, not because of it. Griffin is averaging 23.2 points, 8.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game. The Clips run a lot of offense through him, which helps take pressure off Chris Paul, making the game easier since they flourish playing the two-man game.

While it’s great that the Clippers have responsibly stepped up with Griffin gone, they haven’t beaten a single team with a winning record on the nine-game winning streak they take into Wednesday’s home date against Miami. The Heat have been nursing their own injuries over the past week, but represents the best team L.A. has seen since a 100-99 loss to Oklahoma City on Dec. 21.

Take a look at the Clippers’ victims. The 76ers are on the list, 130-99 losers at home. L.A. has beaten the Pelicans twice, only running into Anthony Davis once. Injury-plagued Charlotte, which enters the week with seven straight setbacks, have also lost a pair. The Jazz were without Derrick Favors and Rudy Gobert in their loss. Slumping Portland had Damian Lillard back, but he shot 7-for-25.

This isn’t to disparage L.A.’s role in its success, but to point out they haven’t exactly faced murderer’s row. Paul Pierce, Wesley Johnson and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute have gotten the bulk of the frontcourt minutes in Griffin’s absence, which served to reduce expectations enough that the last seven of L.A.’s wins before Sunday’s OT win over New Orleans also managed to cover the spread.

Six of the wins came on the road, which is impressive regardless of the competition, but don’t listen to the noise that Griffin’s contributions somehow hold them back. Odds are good that he’ll be back by the time the Clippers go back to living out of suitcases for a five-game East trek that begins in Cleveland on Jan. 21, so this stint of Staples Center games against Miami, Sacramento and rival Houston should be particularly challenging. All three teams will be underdogs at Staples, but have been playing at a significantly higher level than the opponents L.A. has defeated of late.

Spurs, Cavs remain on collision course

The teams that entered the week with the second-longest winning streaks in the NBA just happen to be my projected Finals participants, San Antonio and Cleveland. Both carried seven-game surges into action and have a few hurdles to clear before squaring off in a nationally-televised Thursday night showcase. The Spurs already cleared their first in winning their eighth straight by destroying Brooklyn.

Head coach Gregg Popovich has done a masterful job building around Kawhi Leonard while getting LaMarcus Aldridge settled in, accomplishing this without over-working any of the veterans. The Spurs have lost two games out of 21 since December began. Their largest loss of the season came by six points on opening night. Overshadowed by Golden State’s incredible 36-2 start, San Antonio’s dominance has flown under the radar.

Cleveland has lost only once in games that Kyrie Irving has appeared in since his return from a kneecap fracture suffered in Game 1 of the 2015 Finals. Although he’s still working his way back into a rhythm, his mere presence has made LeBron James and Kevin Love more efficient. Tristan Thompson, who will be vital against Aldridge and Tim Duncan, has been impressive defensively and on the boards. Over the past four wins, J.R. Smith, who is going to be the beneficiary of open looks due to the attention everyone else gets, has shot 22-for-42 from 3-point range, averaging 22.5 points per game. He’s got the green light and the Cavs offense is flourishing.

These teams will meet again in Cleveland on Jan. 30, but you can expect this one to be played with a playoff intensity. The Spurs are perfect 22-0 at home this season, which makes this a tremendous opportunity for both teams to send a message to an opponent they’ll be expecting to see come June.

Raptors-Magic goes international

Both Orlando and Toronto will play only one game this week, but they’re already on the clock as ambassadors for the NBA in London before playing at O2 Arena on Thursday.

For Europeans like Orlando’s Nikola Vucevic, Evan Fournier and Mario Hezonja as well as Toronto’s Jonas Valanciunas, it’s an opportunity to play a game on their home continent, but it’s always worth monitoring to see how the teams are handling their roles off the floor in a Global Games setting.

The Raptors have been over to London back in 2011, marking the first time a regular-season game was played in Europe, while a young Orlando team actually has a lot of experience in other countries, playing in Rio de Janeiro this preseason and exhibitions in China and Mexico over the past decade.

Toronto has won and covered in each of its last three games, all on the road. The Raptors have pulled four games ahead of Boston in the Atlantic Division and own a 1-0 edge on the Magic in the season series, having won in Orlando on Nov. 6. They’re playing without small forward DeMarre Carroll, who got his knee scoped last week and is out indefinitely, which means James Johnson and Terrence Ross have gotten extended minutes.

The Magic have been without Elfrid Payton since suffering an ankle contusion on Jan. 2 and are 1-5 in ’16. Orlando has covered only once in its last seven games and has seen a dip in the production of Fournier, once the team’s leading scorer due to multiple nagging injuries as well. After averaging 17.8 points in November, he averaged 11.6 in December and is down to 9.5 through the first six games in January, shooting less than 26 percent from 3-point range.

Preview: Hawks (23-15) at Hornets (17-20)

Date: January 13, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

The Atlanta Hawks excel in scoring in the paint and the Charlotte Hornets do not - a fact that has been decisive in two meetings this season.

The visiting Hawks can improve to 3-0 against their Southeast Division rivals by handing the Hornets an eighth straight defeat Wednesday night.

Atlanta (23-15) is averaging 45.0 points in the paint while Charlotte (17-20) is at 38.2. The Hawks outscored the Hornets by an average of 43-31 there in winning 97-94 on Oct. 30 and 94-92 two days later.

Al Horford was a big reason for that advantage as he totaled 34 points and 16 rebounds. Things should be easier for the big man this time since he won't have to contend with the injured Al Jefferson.

Horford figures to be confident after he scored a season-high 33 points with 10 rebounds in Saturday's 120-105 victory that ended Chicago's six-game win streak. The Hawks finished with 66 points in the paint - two off their season high.

"We understood this was a good measuring stick game for us," Horford said. "They're a really good team, they just won six straight so we know the effort had to be there more than ever."

The Hawks have scored 246 points with 69 assists while shooting 52.7 percent in their last two games with 48 fast-break points.

'We got up and down, guys were running the floor, we rolled to the basket, got easy lobs and things like that,' point guard Jeff Teague said. 'That's how we have to play for us to be a good team."

Teague will match up with Kemba Walker, the Hornets' leading scorer at 19.0 points per game. Teague has outscored Walker 32-30 in the first two meetings.

Walker has been held to consecutive 11-point efforts in which he is shooting 25.0 percent.

The Hornets are more concerned about the other end of the court in their longest losing streak since a 10-game slide last season. They are allowing an average of 107.0 points in this skid compared to 98.9 prior to the slide.

"It's the defense, obviously," coach Steve Clifford said. "We've got to get back to, in the games 12 through 23, we were the second-best defensive team in the league against a good schedule so we're capable of much better."

Second leading scorer Nicolas Batum, who averages 16.0 points, returned with a nine-point effort in Sunday's 95-92 loss at Denver after missing four games with a sprained right toe.

Hawks forward Thabo Sefolosha is uncertain after he sat out Saturday with a right wrist injury. Coach Mike Budenholzer described the injury as 'a little bit of a problem' and hopes Sefolosha won't miss much time.

The Hornets, back home after a four-game trip, know they will have their hands full with the Southeast leaders, who have won 15 of 18 in the series since the beginning of the 2011-12 season.

"Everybody knows how good Atlanta is and of course they beat us twice early on in the season," Walker said. "We just want to go out and play hard and execute our game plan and try our best to come out with a big win."

Preview: Bucks (16-24) at Wizards (17-19)

Date: January 13, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

A pair of road wins have the injury-riddled Washington Wizards building momentum as they try to avoid their longest home losing streak in two years.

A matchup with the Milwaukee Bucks could be just what they need.

The Wizards attempt to snap their four-game home losing streak by continuing their success against the Bucks on Wednesday night.

Washington (17-19) is without Bradley Beal (right leg) and Kris Humphries (right knee), while Marcin Gortat's sore left knee could sideline him a second straight game.

Scoring depth was key to overcoming those absences Monday, with seven Wizards reaching double figures in a 114-100 win at Chicago.

"I believe in these guys," said guard John Wall, who had 17 points and 10 assists. "I see these guys put in work every day, and I put in the work every day also, and if these guys get open, I believe they're going to make shots."

Washington could get a lift if Gortat returns. The center averages 13.4 points and 9.7 rebounds but was scratched Monday after getting 12 and 10 in Saturday's 105-99 win at Orlando.

"I don't know if it's a staph infection. Just a small cut on his knee from diving on the floor, and something got in there," coach Randy Wittman said, "and it swelled up and he had a high temperature. So we know it's an infection of some kind, we just got to do the treatment."

If Gortat is out, Nene would start at center again after scoring 14 points while making 7 of 11 from the field against the Bulls.

The Wizards, though, are averaging 92.7 points while losing three straight games at home, and they last dropped four straight there from Jan. 1-11, 2014.

But Washington has won nine of its last 11 matchups with Milwaukee (16-24), including a 115-86 rout in the nation's capital Nov. 17. Six Wizards scored in double digits, with Wall and Otto Porter leading the way with 19 points apiece.

Washington has won three straight at home over the Bucks by an average of 17.7 points.

Milwaukee is trying to build on its own win over the Bulls, a 106-101 victory Tuesday thanks in large part to Giannis Antetokounmpo. The forward had 29 points, 10 rebounds and five assists after totaling 13, 15 and six over the two previous games.

"That's what we need from him," said Greg Monroe, who added 17 points and 12 boards. "He's at his best when he's attacking the rim and getting into the lane."

Antetokounmpo had no trouble doing that against the Wizards on Oct. 30, scoring 27 points with nine rebounds in a 118-113 home loss. He struggled in the defeat at Washington, scoring nine points on 3-for-13 shooting.

Monroe also had a tough time at Verizon Center, finishing with a season-low four points while missing 5 of 6 from the floor. He had 22 against the Wizards at home in October, and enters this meeting averaging 20.8 points over the last four road games.

Khris Middleton leads the Bucks with 16.9 points per game, but he's putting up 23.8 while connecting on 49.6 percent from the floor - 47.7 from 3-point range - over the past eight contests.

Preview: Knicks (20-20) at Nets (10-28)

Date: January 13, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

The New York Knicks haven't owned a winning record in almost two months. Getting there might require overcoming Carmelo Anthony's absence.

While Anthony's status is unknown, the Knicks look to continue their surge and send the Brooklyn Nets to an 11th straight home loss Wednesday night.

New York (20-20) has followed a four-game slide by winning six of eight. The Knicks have a chance to move above .500 for the first time since they were 8-7 following a loss at Miami on Nov. 23.

They may have to do it without Anthony, who suffered a sprained right ankle when he ran into a referee heading up the floor before halftime of Tuesday's 120-114 win over Boston. He left 19 seconds into the third quarter and X-rays were negative.

New York also won despite Kristaps Porzingis, who finished with 26 points, fouling out in the fourth quarter.

"There's turning points in seasons, and I think this is a good turning point for us," said forward Derrick Williams, who had 15 points and a season-high 10 rebounds. "When KP fouls out and Melo got injured, things like that happen. It's a team effort, and it gives those guys confidence in us that we can pull out games even when they're not on the court."

That confidence will be vital if Anthony is out. He leads the team with 21.6 points per game and had 28 in a 108-91 home win over the Nets on Dec. 4 after the Knicks lost all four matchups last season.

Porzingis contributed 19 points and 10 rebounds. The rookie forward is averaging 23.0 points on 52.0 percent from the floor - 8 for 21 from beyond the arc - over the last three games.

The Knicks have split six visits to Brooklyn, losing the last two after falling 92-88 on Feb. 6. However, they should like their chances this time since the Nets (10-28) have lost 10 straight for their longest slide at Barclays Center.

It's also the second-longest in franchise history. They dropped 14 in a row in New Jersey from Jan. 29-March 22, 2010.

The current losing streak was in no danger of ending Monday when the Nets were thumped 106-79 by San Antonio, one day after the firings of general manager Billy King and coach Lionel Hollins.

"We ran into a sledgehammer of a team," interim coach Tony Brown said. "They definitely know how to play together and that's something we're going to strive and try to do here."

Brook Lopez was again a bright spot, averaging a team-high 19.7 points and 8.5 rebounds. He led the way with 18 points against the Spurs, while the rest of the starters combined for 35.

The center has averaged 23.0 points on 55.4 percent shooting over his last five home meetings with New York. He scored 22 while adding nine rebounds and six blocks off the bench Feb. 6.

Brown may opt to start Wayne Ellington and Donald Sloan in the back court again, but they combined for 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting Monday. Sloan got the nod ahead of Shane Larkin, who started the previous four games after Jarrett Jack was lost for the season with a torn ACL.
