Preview: Indians at White Sox
Gracenote
Jun 13, 2018

The Chicago White Sox put their home-run drought in the rear-view mirror and look to string together back-to-back wins when they host the American League Central-leading Cleveland Indians on Wednesday. The White Sox had gone six games without a homer before Yoan Moncada and Yolmer Sanchez went deep to lead off the first inning during Tuesday’s 5-1 victory.

Chicago ended May by losing three straight at Cleveland but has gone 7-5 this month to climb out of last place in the AL Central with the help of a pitching staff that has posted a 2.74 ERA over the last 12 contests. Dylan Covey hopes to continue that solid stretch when he takes the mound for the White Sox in the third contest of the four-game series while the Indians counter with Trevor Bauer, who owns a 2.17 ERA in seven road starts. Cleveland, which has a comfortable five-game lead in the division, lost for just the second time in seven contests Tuesday as it managed just one hit in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position. Francisco Lindor recorded two hits in the setback and is 5-for-12 with three doubles and a walk over his last three contests for the Indians, who have won 17 of 24 against Chicago since the beginning of last season.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), NBCS Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Trevor Bauer (5-4, 2.62 ERA) vs. White Sox RH Dylan Covey (2-1, 2.22)

Bauer limited Detroit to one run on seven hits and one walk while reaching double figures in strikeouts (12) for the third straight outing last time out. The 27-year-old UCLA product, who has yielded eight earned runs and registered 52 strikeouts over his last five starts, has served up just five homers in 13 outings - two in the last seven turns. Jose Abreu is 10-for-34 with a pair of doubles versus Bauer, who is 6-2 with a 3.55 ERA against Chicago in his career.

Covey has not permitted an earned run in his last two starts after giving up five runs - two earned - over 4 1/3 innings at Cleveland on May 28. The 26-year-old Californian has allowed one unearned run on seven hits and four walks with 14 strikeouts across 11 frames in his last two outings. Yonder Alonso has recorded a double in two at-bats against Covey, who has been much better at home (3.76 ERA) than on the road (7.80) while in the major leagues.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cleveland OF Lonnie Chisenhall is 9-for-27 with three RBIs in seven contests since coming off the disabled list.

2. Abreu is just 0-for-8 in the series but has notched 20 of his 25 doubles in the last 33 games.

3. Indians 3B Jose Ramirez owns a four-game hitting streak but has hit just one homer in 10 contests this month after belting 11 in May.

Preview: Reds at Royals
Gracenote
Jun 13, 2018

Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto isn’t a fan of the designated hitter, but he could fill the role again Wednesday when the Reds face the host Kansas City Royals in the finale of a two-game interleague series. Batting third and serving as the designated hitter Tuesday, Votto delivered a bases-loaded triple in the 10th inning to help the Reds secure a 5-1 victory.

The brief series between a pair of last-place teams opened with a pitchers’ duel as the Reds’ Sal Romano and the Royals’ Ian Kennedy each threw eight strong innings. The Reds forced extra innings when Tucker Barnhart homered off Kelvin Herrera to lead off the ninth inning for Herrera's second blown save in 16 opportunities. Eugenio Suarez added an RBI single in the 10th for the Reds, who are looking to win three straight games for the first time since May 13, when they won four in a row. Kansas City lost for the eighth time in its last 11 games Tuesday while being held to four hits, including a solo homer by rookie Hunter Dozier, and designated hitter Jorge Soler (bruised toe) returned to the lineup for the first time since Friday and went 0-for-4 with a strikeout.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, FS Ohio (Cincinnati), FS Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Tyler Mahle (4-6, 4.33 ERA) vs. Royals RH Jason Hammel (2-6, 5.12)

Mahle received a no-decision against Colorado last Thursday, when he allowed three runs (two earned) with six strikeouts across five innings. The 23-year-old native Californian has struggled to pitch deep into games, tossing exactly five innings in five of his 13 starts. Set to make his first career appearance against Kansas City, Mahle has issued a total of 34 hits and 15 walks over his last six starts covering 29 1/3 innings.

Hammel took the loss against Oakland last Thursday after allowing four runs in six innings, but manager Ned Yost was encouraged by the outing. “I thought Hammel threw great. One of the best performances I've seen him throw since we've had him,” Yost told reporters. “Even the pitches he got hurt on, he was really, really good.” Hammel is 4-1 with a 3.42 ERA in 12 career games (11 starts) against Cincinnati, including a 0.75 ERA during an active four-game winning streak.

WALK-OFFS

1. Kansas City OF Jorge Bonifacio, who is finishing an 80-game PED suspension, will begin a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Omaha.

2. The Reds are 21-28 under interim manager Jim Riggleman.

3. The Royals activated Justin Grimm from the 10-day disabled list and optioned fellow RHP Trevor Oaks to Triple-A Omaha.

Preview: Padres at Cardinals
Gracenote
Jun 13, 2018

The San Diego Padres surprisingly are just five games under .500 as they try to win their three-game series against the host St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. The Padres posted a 4-2 victory in Tuesday's middle contest and have won 10 of their last 14 contests.

Eric Hosmer homered for the second time in three games for San Diego and is batting .310 this month. The real star of the Padres is closer Brad Hand, who is tied for the National League lead with 20 saves after tossing a perfect ninth inning on Tuesday and hasn't been scored upon in 11 of his last 12 appearances. Marcell Ozuna recorded a run-scoring single for St. Louis and is batting .390 with four homers and 12 RBIs this month. The hot-hitting Jose Martinez was hitless in three at-bats after belting five homers over his previous five games.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres LH Eric Lauer (2-4, 6.64 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Luke Weaver (3-5, 4.35)

The 23-year-old was roughed up by the Cardinals on May 11, when he surrendered six runs and seven hits - four homers - over 2 1/3 frames of a 9-5 loss. Lauer has worked five innings or fewer in seven of his nine starts.

Weaver is 2-0 with 12 scoreless innings in two career starts against the Padres, registering 14 strikeouts while allowing seven hits and two walks. The 24-year-old is winless (0-3) in five starts since defeating the Padres on May 11. Weaver came away without a decision against Cincinnati in his last turn as he gave up four runs on seven hits and a season-high five walks in five innings.

Preview: Astros at Athletics
Gracenote
Jun 13, 2018

The red-hot Houston Astros attempt to remain perfect on their 10-game road trip when they visit the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday for the middle contest of their three-game series. Houston has won a season high-tying six straight contests, including the first five of its trek following Tuesday's 6-3 triumph.

Evan Gattis doubled, homered and drove in a career-high five runs while Carlos Correa also went deep for the Astros, who saw five of the last six batters in their lineup record two hits. Oakland was outhit 12-7 on Tuesday as it fell to 3-2 on its 10-game homestand. Matt Chapman continued swinging a hot bat for the Athletics as he recorded his second three-hit performance in three contests with a trio of doubles. The 25-year-old third baseman has gone 10-for-16 during his five-game hitting streak.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston), NBCS California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Gerrit Cole (7-1, 2.16 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Paul Blackburn (1-0, 1.50)

Cole won his fifth consecutive decision on Thursday, when he allowed one run and three hits over six innings at Texas. The 27-year-old Californian registered eight strikeouts to raise his season total to 124 - the highest amount by an Astro prior to the All-Star break since Darryl Kile recorded 128 in 1996. Cole is 1-1 with a 2.75 ERA in three career starts against the Athletics, with the victory coming at Oakland on May 9.

Blackburn returned from a forearm injury to make his season debut on Thursday, allowing one run and three hits over six innings in a win over Kansas City. The 24-year-old native of the Golden State made one rehab start with Single-A Stockton prior to joining Oakland but lasted only 3 2/3 frames as he yielded three runs and eight hits. Blackburn, who is 2-0 with a 4.50 ERA in six career starts at home, will be facing Houston for the first time.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Astros have won six straight meetings with the Athletics, outscoring them 49-12, after losing the first matchup of the season.

2. Correa (side) returned to the lineup Tuesday after missing four games and finished 2-for-4 while scoring twice.

3. Oakland RHP Trevor Cahill (Achilles), who was scratched from his scheduled start on Saturday, likely will land on the disabled list, according to manager Bob Melvin.

Preview: Rangers at Dodgers
Gracenote
Jun 13, 2018

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ recent power surge is being led by Joc Pederson, who has followed a homerless month of May with seven blasts in his last eight games. The 26-year-old looks to continue his hot streak Wednesday, when the Dodgers conclude their brief two-game interleague series against the visiting Texas Rangers.

Pederson, Max Muncy and Yasiel Puig each homered in Tuesday’s 12-5 victory as the Dodgers won for the fourth time in five games. Pederson is 13-for-26 with 11 runs, five doubles and 10 RBIs over his last eight contests for the Dodgers, who are 8-2 with 29 home runs this month. The unheralded Muncy has gone deep in four straight games and is 12-for-32 with six homers and 11 RBIs in 10 contests in June. Texas has fallen 15 games below .500 with five straight losses, but Delino DeShields has shown signs of emerging from a lengthy slump by going 5-for-8 with two walks over his last two contests.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS Southwest (Texas), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Cole Hamels (3-6, 3.86 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Kenta Maeda (4-4, 3.61)

Hamels allowed two home runs in a game for the fourth consecutive start on Thursday, when he gave up five runs over 7 1/3 innings in a 5-2 loss to Houston. The 34-year-old native of San Diego has gone 2-4 with a 3.61 ERA in his last nine turns to lower his ERA from 4.76 to 3.86. Matt Kemp is 8-for-23 against Hamels, who owns a 3-2 record and 1.89 ERA in eight career starts versus Los Angeles but hasn’t faced them since April 23, 2014.

Maeda will be activated from the disabled list prior to the game to make his first start since May 30, when he left in the second inning due to a right hip strain. The 30-year-old native of Japan threw a successful bullpen session on Sunday but did not make a minor-league rehab start. Maeda never has faced Texas but owns a 4-3 record and 3.64 ERA in eight career interleague starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw (back) threw a successful bullpen session on Tuesday and hopes to return in early July.

2. Texas OF Nomar Mazara was scratched from Tuesday’s starting lineup due to flu-like symptoms and is listed as day-to-day.

3. Los Angeles placed RHP Walker Buehler on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to June 9, with a right rib microfracture.
