This is the 6-6 PAC 12 team against the CUSA runner-up. S. Miss has a prolific offense. The QB Mullen is reliable and a proven commodity. They have twin 1,000+ yd. rushers. One is more of a speedster, while the other is more of a bruiser. They also have two veteran receivers with proven records. One is more of a possession receiver while the other is more of a game breaker. It seems like a balanced offense that should have some success moving the ball. Washington comes in with a reputation for defensive dominance. The offense is heavy loaded and heavily dependent on the freshman running back. Coach Petersen states that everything has to go perfect for the Huskies offense to work. That is because it is so run dependent. I'm of the volition that S. Miss' offense will be difficult to stop; even for the talented young Huskie defense. Todd Monken came there after orchestrating an Oklahoma St. offense that flourished. He seems to have the pieces here. They are going to mix up the pass and run efficiently enough to score some points. Washington will have to keep up. The Huskies are supposed to be a program on the rise, but they are freshman-laden and coming off a season in which they lost to Utah, Arizona St., Cal, Boise St., but hung their laurels on an upset win at USC; a game in which the halftime score was 6-3. There was a win over a middling Arizona team and a deceiving Apple Cup win in which Wazzu was without its star QB and the replacement was totally green and threw 3 ints. Southern Miss had a 9-game win streak that propelled them into the conference championship game. The win streak included a demolition of a Jeff Driskel/ Kenneth Dixon lead La. Tech team. In the conference championship game, they turned the ball over on 3 consecutive possessions and lost to WKU 45-28. This team scored 62 against a pretty good La. Tech D. I might add they lost 36-28 at Nebraska. Their only other stumble was an inexplicable loss to Marshall in Huntington. I have to take Southern Miss and the points (I Hope the number keeps going up). QB Mullens had lots of legitimate options, so it's hard for me to imagine a succession of 3 and outs. Also, going back to the days of Jeff Bowers and Larry Fedora, this was the type of bowl that S. Miss expected to play in and compete. This program seems to be back and I'm sure the players want to erase the sting of not being at their best in the conference championship game. Take S. Miss plus the points.
