There were speculation that it was 'close' earlier...but Cashman (as of 312pm EST "“I have no irons in the fire. I’m cold.""

He's actually been pretty damned good lately. Only given up more than 2 ER twice since May 25th.

Not really a big deal. Nobody is scared of Washburn.

If they make the playoffs they'll have to knock out the Sox because the Rays will be playing baseball in October.

The only thing the Rays will be playing in October is golf.
The team offense is not very good, the bullpen is ordinary, and outside of Kazmir the Ray starters have been doing it with mirrors.
How Sorrenstine has won 10 games while giving up 20 more hits than innings pitch is beyond me.

this is a great move for the yankees if true. washburn is a good pitcher with some big game experience at the front of the rotation (at the time). obviously the sabathia and harden moves make the major headlines and understandably so. but this is the kind of move that could payoff huge for the yanks when it comes to winning the east.

put down the pipe

Where's their weakness? Their great starting rotation? Their reliable bullpen? Their lineup full of young studs? They even have a great fielding team, but yeah there is no way this team could make a run.

Their inexperience.. not having any of their 'young studs' ever playing postseason baseball.. never being in a pennant race in September versus Sox and Yanks who have been there time and time again.. need I continue?

the part about sonnanstine is dead on. he is a AAA pitcher who is getting every break to go his way this season.

the first few sentences in your post, though, i cant buy. there is nothing phony about shields and garza. both could be fringe #1s on a handful of other teams in the bigs. garza might actually end up as the best of their big 3 in five years.

rays ultimately will shit on themselves in the end because they are too inexperienced. but what theyve done this season is legit.

Their weakness?
Carlos Pena is hitting .238 with a horrible .338 OBA
Not exactly what you want out of a 1B/DH type.

Crawford's .265 - .306 disgusting OBA with 8 HR's scare nobody.
Not to mention he's been thrown out 13 times stealing.

Bartlett's .262 - .306 OBA is worse than Crawford.

Rays are without a doubt for real talent-wise, but not World Series or even ALCS contender-wise. Give them this season to at least be in the race for a little while, and then they will have David Price and Tim Beckham coming up in the near future, both who are the real deal. Then we can talk about ALCS, etc.
