Was this an "honesty test" by a new local bookie I used?

I recently began using a local bookie I was "introduced" to , and placed a few wagers the first couple of days there. After winning my first 3 bets, I then lost one, and on my next nightly call to place a wager, inquired about my balance, and the amount he told me was much more than I had coming to me. Since I've mainly bet online for approx. 8 years, the "local bookie" thing is something Im not as familiar with as many in here. Was this some sort of "honesty" test, to see if I would speak up about the difference in the balance I was owed, or was it just possibly miscommunication somehow between he and I on one of the Phone~made bets, or even the fact that I heard he has many, many customers, and maybe it's possible that he just basically screws up now and then?.............p.s.~~ I told him during the conversation that my figures showed him owing me substantially less than his calculations. I woudn't want it the other way around and now I feel he has trust in me....

Hache man,

My local guys have gotten my balance wrong both ways maybe 25 times over the years. Addition mistakes happen. I can see where errors occur when using pencil and paper to track. late nights/early mornings. Things happen.

Hache-
How do we know that you're not telling this story to test if we believe you are honest?

Guys, thanks for the info. General, thanks, now I know it does happen at least with others. Java, lol, I have no reason to lie or make up such a story......

Way to read deep into things though Java, sounds as if your always thinking more and "reaching" deeper than you should, like I do!!

No. 1 rule when betting with any bookmaker is never check a bad figure. It will come back to haunt you. Most likely you may have got a figure that only included the winners, especially if a weekend overlapped. Perhaps the loser was charged to another bettor, who would then complain. When this happens, the bet is traced, and will end up charged against who ever really lost it. You did the right thing by telling your local you had a different figure.

when placing wagers on credit it is important that honesty prevails....a true gambler is one of the most honest people you would ever meet.....sometimes in life all we have is our "word" and i always make sure my reputation is one of complete truth....although i am sure my bookies would rather have a more recreational gambler as a client it really pays dividends if they know you are honest...especially when they know you are looking for "good lines" somtimes a few of my locals will deal me a REALLY padded line because they know i may make a "limit size" bet that will offset their handle on a certain game....these types of profitable situations are only the direct result of being honest and trustworthy!....plus i believe in gambling karma!

Tell the guy that you like his figure much better than yours, and that you will double check your #'s.

Odds are he will eventually find his error and respect you for being honest.

Don't kid yourself-people do notice little things like that.

A true honesty test would be to see if you took the money on payday.

Hache- You clearly did the right thing. Trust is always important but even more so with a bookie-player relationship. A bookie with a lot of customers during a busy football weekend will invariably make mistakes. One misgraded wager can mean a big swing when you go to check a figure. When a bookie and a player have a mutual trust of one another, the mistake is usually found and corrected quite easily.

I remember my first bookie. He was a prince of a guy. Someone referred me to him so we met and talked and he took me on as a customer but set me with a certain limit so that if I was a stiff, he wouldn't lose much. The first week when we checked the figure, he was off $100 dollars in my favor. That was a lot of money to me but I told him I felt his figure was off. We went over all my plays and found the error. A month or so later he had raised my limits and I loved a game so I played a nickel on it and won. When we checked the figure at weeks end, it was a nickel off. We sat down and went over everything and he didn't have my nickel play written down. He asked what game I played and I told him. He said "Are you sure" and I said yes. He reached in his pocket and gave me the $500 dollars.
