Jesus - this is really freakin me out - I'm a mathematician and can't figure it out. I'll sleep on it and by tomorrow will beat him every game - there's a formula to this but just not seeing it yet.

How to win:
http://world.std.com/~reinhold/math/nim.html

But it still isn't exactly easy (well, if you can count in binary it is).

Dante, I'll take that dollar now

I also don't like that it sometimes cheats. When you get it to a configuration of

1 pearl in a row
2 pearls in a row
3 pearls in a row

(count of 22 for those who looked at that link), he will (don't know if always or sometimes) not take any away and it will be your turn again.

Good Luck,
Bart

Dante,

No deal. There's at least $10 in entertainment value seeing you get frustrated over it

alright!

it does work! and then you win all the time.

in this math link posted though it mentioned:

"On the other hand, in learning the strategy you will experience a deep and, for the mathematically-inclined, exciting glimpse of the deep connections underlying the game."

i have failed to see the "deep connections" despite applying the strategy...

Glad I could help.

And those who don't get the "deep connections", don't worry about it - as someone else is famous for saying (at least in certain circles),

Math is hard!!!

i am good at math, although it's been quite some time since i was into the hardcore staff, my problem with the article is that it explains the winning formula, or algorithm, but it doesn't go into these "deep connections" it mentions, i mean, what's the binary have to do with the game and why do you count the rows in binary and then add them up in the decimal, of course there is some underlying logic in the puzzle, but the winning algo is no more an indication of it than say a mathematical formula for physics if the theory behind it is not explained.
