Boy, that was close. It's very tough to tell from any angle we see whether that was fair or foul. But what bothered me a lot (and I'm cheering for boston) was that how in the hell does home plate umpire Tim Mclelland come out immediately and overrule the right field umpire. I mean, Timmy was 280 feet behind the right field ump. That is ludicrous. They didn't even go out and discuss it. He just went out and immediately overruled him. I mean, it wasn't even obviously fair.. I saw the fan made contact with the ball, and whether it was fair or foul, it was very tough to tell, especially from home plate umps view.. He had NO right overruling him from 380 feet away..
I have umpired for 8 yrs, and if I ever got overruled by a home plate ump 280 feet behind me, i would be very pissed at him for showing me up and not even discussing it with me beforehand.
And trust me, this was not 100% fair. It was very tough to tell whether that kids glove was in fair territory or foul. One thing for sure, he did make contact with the ball, and no way could home plate umpire tell from 380 feet away from that fan. It was too close to call. It might have been the right call by the home plate ump, but that wasn't his call.
Was it fair or foul..
FAIR -135
FOUL +115
That's all.. not much of a favorite that was fair. But chances are, it was.. Too close to make that call for home plate ump to over rule the right field ump..
