Jewish women and children, who have been selected for death, walk in a line towards the gas chambers in horrifying images published in a new book.
Other black and white images show the house of the camp commandant, Lieutenant Colonel Rudolph Hoss, with trees planted in front to hide the house from the rest of the camp.
More than a million people - most of them Jewish - lost their lives at Auschwitz, which is near the town of Oswiecim, outside Krakow in modern-day Poland.
Last year, Pope Francis visited Auschwitz and was photographed by the famous sign at the entrance gate which bears the cynical words 'Arbeit macht frei', meaning 'Work sets you free'.

Hitler's forces invaded Poland in 1939 and the following year he ordered the construction of Auschwitz-Birkenau in the Polish countryside.
The camp consisted of three main parts: Auschwitz I (the base camp) Auschwitz II - Birkenau (the extermination camp) and Auschwitz III - Monowitz (the labour camp).

The new book's author, military historian Ian Baxter said: 'It shows the step-by-step transformation of the buildings including the crematoria and how these buildings aided the largest killing factory of all time. Many of these buildings are still standing today.'
Auschwitz-Birkenau was originally used to house Polish political prisoners but was later handed over to the infamous SS and between 1942 and 1945 around 1.1 million people died there, either in the gas chambers or through starvation or beatings.
During the war, the camp was staffed by 6,500 to 7,000 members of the infamous SS - 15 per cent of whom were later convicted of war crimes.
It was run by camp commandant Rudolf Höss who was tried and hanged in 1947 for his part in the extermination.

The 'Arbeit Macht Frei' sign, meaning 'work sets you free', was inscribed to mislead prisoners into thinking the only way of securing their freedom was labour.
SS General Theodor Eicke, inspector of concentration camps, reportedly ordered the use of the slogan.
Some historians believe it has a less literal meaning and instead was intended as a declaration that self-sacrifice in the form of endless labour brings a kind of spiritual freedom.
The railway town at Auschwitz was often a transit point on the way to being murdered somewhere else – in a labour camp or on a ‘death march’.
Among the 1.1 million who met their deaths at Auschwitz were Poles, gypsies and Soviet prisoners of war.
Only 8,000 emaciated prisoners were still inside Auschwitz and Birkenau when Stalin’s forces arrived in January 1945.
The rest had already been herded across central Europe with just flimsy pyjamas and wooden clogs to protect them against the winter.
Most were dead by the time Europe was liberated in May 1945.
Last month the names of almost 10,000 Nazi SS commanders and guards who helped in the extermination of more than a million Jews at Auschwitz were posted online for the first time.
Following its liberation the camp has become a symbol of the holocaust and has operated as a museum since 1947.
Last year two million tourists visited Auschwitz-Birkenau to learn about the Holocaust.

Sad to see men and women in these photos but the kids!?? Fucking heartbreaking. Just try and or yourself there and look at their faces... no words. Not sure how anyone could hurt a kid much less kill but this? If you don't believe in a demonic presence in the world than what is this? Tying this into present day... I think we make a grave mistake if we don't recognize these Muslim cowards for what they are.

That's why Eisenhower captured it with photos. He understood that there must be a record,
first-hand evidence to counteract those who would deny it happened.
He also came to hate the German people.

As I stand in this gas chamber...


I see the chamber door shut behind me.


With each inhalation I feel closer to death.


I can still hear their screams.


I wonder which breath will be my last


The gas fills my nostrils.


The screams drown out my thoughts.


The smoke dries up my tears.


Bodies tremble all around me.


Wheezing. Coughing. Gasping for air.


90,000 Jews were killed at this camp.


Jews only exited this camp as ash or smoke.


Today, I walked out on my own two feet.


Before I left the chamber of death, I sang the Shema with my group, I uttered Hatikvah to myself, and I brought out my Israeli flag.


It is not much, but this was my small act of defiance. No Jew was meant to survive this camp.


We are still here. We live on.
