BOSTON - Red Sox right-hander Wade Miller was scratched from his scheduled start on Friday night because of stiffness in his pitching shoulder.
Bronson Arroyo replaced Miller on the mound for the game against the Minnesota Twins.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Miller was well enough to pitch, but Thursday's off day gave Boston the luxury of starting Arroyo on full rest and giving Miller more time to heal.
Miller missed most of the second half of last season with Houston because of an injury in his right shoulder, but he said he doesn't believe the stiffness is related. He is scheduled to make his next start Wednesday against Kansas City.
Francona said David Wells will start on Saturday
