W1 Odds at Bookmaker (and my best leans)

I bolded the picks I like and I also have a few comments on some others.

I may be the only guy here that thinks Stanford is still fielding a team of smoke and mirrors and is overmatched talentwise vs. Oregon St., but because it's W1 and because Harbaugh has his way of focusing his team to overachieve in spots, I'll wait for a better line before betting the Beavers. All this Stanford hysteria seems to be moving the line favorably in the Beaver's direction. Also it looks like this game is going to be sided in this forum. Careful! No play for me so far until I get some answers in fall camp.

I also like Oregon at home vs UW but it's been bet up to 2 TD now. Anyone got a better line somewhere else?

I picked Tennessee -7 over UCLA which is more points than I think I should lay.... hoping for a break in the next few weeks to get better value. I don't see UCLA's OL coming in here prepared to handle Tennessee's bruising defense. I think the Bruins will hang in there for a half but then run out of gas by mid 3Q to the 4th Q. The have virtually no depth on the OL. Olson gets hit once or twice and it's curtains for UCLA... maybe for the year?

Cal -5.5 over MSU is probably my best play here. I think the Bears are going to be extremely undervalued for the first few weeks. Mich. St. has not made the kind of strides towards improvement I've expected to see and Cal has some "secret" weapons a la Tedford the offensive genius who has his ways of bringing out the talent where you don't expect it. Some "no names" at the skill positions on the Bear team will become names soon enough. Top that off with probably the 3rd best defense in the Pac and it's going to be a long day for the Spartans.

Zona -28 / Idaho is a lot of points to lay but we are talking about a very thin cellar dweller of the WAC vs a scoring machine that might cover this number in the first quarter. I promise this game will get ugly at some point and I don't see the Vandals being in a position to get in the back door.

Fresno St. +5.5 @ Rutgers. No matter who wins this one, I just can't imagine a Pat Hill team traveling to the east coast under the lights without having his team well prepared for a big TV game. He lives for this very thing. A FG should decide it. No way Fresneck gets steamrolled here.

Also, WSU playing to a home crowd in Seattle won't help them when the game wears on and their lack of depth catches up to them. OK St. brings too many guns for WSU's tenuous defense to keep in check at all, much less hang in there and keep up with them without any depth at all. A high scoring game seems very likely.

I layed off USC here because I want a better number but USC should roll here especially because it will be a statement that Mark Sanchez needs to make. I'll probably bet it anyway even if the line moves against me and/or I can't find a better deal. The only reason I have for any hesitation is because PC might figure 24 points is enough of a winning margin to pack it up and go home healthy without additional risk to his starters. But that's not very typical and the Trojan's 2nd team can probably cover this number itself, so I'll probably bet the Trojans anyway.

Conan, I respect your opinion on the game and reserve the right to change mine but as of now I like Stanford and the points and would strongly consider the ML.

Hm, Harbough may not have settled on a QB yet(my gut says Pritchard) but IMO whomever suits up at QB for Stanford will be superior to their OSU counterpart on that day.

More on Stanford, yes I have some decent expectations for them and will be looking forward to how their Fall camp goes, this is a very veteran team. The big problem with them is and always has been that their fan base isn't that involved, it is hard to get decent info on how they look in camps.

QB is the big unknown because the rest of the team seems relatively set. Best I can gather is that going into fall Pritchard leads with Loukas and Forcier very close behind. Wildcard for the season is Luck. He is a BIGTIME recruit who I think Harbough would be willing to forego the redshirt depending on how he looks. Won't be an issue in game one but perhaps as the year goes on.

UoD, of all the Pac-10 cappers on this board, I respect your opinion most because you are a real study and your track record speaks for itself.

I have been a little tentative about calling this game for a few reasons which I wil try to elaborate on here.

1.) This is essentially the same team that was a situation or 2 away from going almost winless last year. Had Booty not tried to play through a broken finger in the USC game, I don't see him throwing 4 picks and losing the game to the Cardinal. Stanford caught Cal in a major tailspin and that was the other questionable situation where they prevailed. Harbaugh gained a lot of deserved recognition for pulling off what he did compared to what Walt Weiss managed just a year earlier. But they had little to speak for on offense last year, the year before as well and my bet is that this year they will be shut down often -- again. They may field a decent defense (by comparison) but offensively there are far more serious questions to answer than perhaps any other team in the conference and that includes WSU.

2.) To sum the rest up briefly (as I am a little short on time at the moment), look at the other side. Oregon State, a year away from being one of the top defenses in the country. Stanford's "percieved" strengths in their passing game play directly into Oregon State's returning strengths on defense, their backfield and pass rush. Of course their job would be made a lot easier if they get good play from their new DL which is perhaps somewhat thinner even though they return plenty of experience if not their starting players. But for Oregon St. to fail in this situation means they would need a major fall off in their defense, not just "some" because we are talking about a team with very high expectations and rightly so from their returning players on defense. (albeit not many starters.)

For this play to make a lot of sense to me, Stanford would need to ramp up its offense a few notches and Oregon St. would need its defense to decline a few notches as well. I am not convinced of either.

But for now, let's leave it at that as the gist of my argument which I make with the greatest of respect. I'm with you that there are just too many variables yet to be decided in fall camp. I reserve the right to change my mind too.

Putting aside the Williams sisters which I don't find difficult, I recently saw an interesting stat in a Cal blog about Pac-10 QB's last year. (Just skip past the Longshore propaganda.) I think it was limited to teams with returning QB's but I could be wrong about that part of it. In EVERY case, every QB had a declining stat in QB efficiency as the season wore on except for one team, Oregon St. (not mentioned but elsewhere.) But judging where they started at in the beginning, its no wonder that they improved. At least you can say that Moevao and Canfield are not as totally green as they were.

(Did I just say something wrong using "green" in a pejorative sense? Who cares, this is football.)

If Moevao starts here, I think they will win it with some relative ease. (He was 4-0 in games he started ly.) That's banking on him synching up with his WR's which may turn this one into an easy win if it happens. If not, I'd like to see how Harbaugh defenses them. The spread (+4 at the moment) is hard to ignore but so is the talent gap at many positions on the field. I'm still a bit leery about what Harbaugh has been cooking up with his offense. Maybe they will come up with a running game that can open up their passing game. That remains to be seen. I'm not sure about where Anthony Kimble will rate on their depth chart or what schemes Harbaugh may have worked up to develop their rush. Lot's of ????'s remain.

I picked Tennessee -7 over UCLA which is more points than I think I should lay.... hoping for a break in the next few weeks to get better value. I don't see UCLA's OL coming in here prepared to handle Tennessee's bruising defense. I think the Bruins will hang in there for a half but then run out of gas by mid 3Q to the 4th Q. The have virtually no depth on the OL. Olson gets hit once or twice and it's curtains for UCLA... maybe for the year?

Cal -5.5 over MSU is probably my best play here. I think the Bears are going to be extremely undervalued for the first few weeks. Mich. St. has not made the kind of strides towards improvement I've expected to see and Cal has some "secret" weapons a la Tedford the offensive genius who has his ways of bringing out the talent where you don't expect it. Some "no names" at the skill positions on the Bear team will become names soon enough. Top that off with probably the 3rd best defense in the Pac and it's going to be a long day for the Spartans.

Zona -28 / Idaho is a lot of points to lay but we are talking about a very thin cellar dweller of the WAC vs a scoring machine that might cover this number in the first quarter. I promise this game will get ugly at some point and I don't see the Vandals being in a position to get in the back door.

Fresno St. +5.5 @ Rutgers. No matter who wins this one, I just can't imagine a Pat Hill team traveling to the east coast under the lights without having his team well prepared for a big TV game. He lives for this very thing. A FG should decide it. No way Fresneck gets steamrolled here.

Also, WSU playing to a home crowd in Seattle won't help them when the game wears on and their lack of depth catches up to them. OK St. brings too many guns for WSU's tenuous defense to keep in check at all, much less hang in there and keep up with them without any depth at all. A high scoring game seems very likely.

I layed off USC here because I want a better number but USC should roll here especially because it will be a statement that Mark Sanchez needs to make. I'll probably bet it anyway even if the line moves against me and/or I can't find a better deal. The only reason I have for any hesitation is because PC might figure 24 points is enough of a winning margin to pack it up and go home healthy without additional risk to his starters. But that's not very typical and the Trojan's 2nd team can probably cover this number itself, so I'll probably bet the Trojans anyway.

Agree with your Tenn pick as it will be my biggest play that weekend along with Clemson assuming neither line moves up. I am hoping bith come down a bit.

I also just heard a JUCO OL Bruins were expecting in August has switched to Cal. Doesn't make their depth issue any better.

Clemson is coming in with very good quarterback, receivers, OL, and two NFL running backs against a very thin Bama defense. I think linemakers are giving too much credit for Saban.

Thx. We'll just have to see because conceptually I agree with much of what you are saying. The line seems to be dropping so some of the value that I saw may not be there come game week.

As I have been speculating here in the past few weeks, it is now pretty much confirmed. OSU's defense just took a really big hit. This guy was OSU's top recruit in 2008 and was pencilled in as a starter in day one.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE a few weeks make. Back on July 8, Oregon State was feeling positive on the prospects of getting Simi Kuli into fall camp on time or shortly after it kicked off in Corvallis. On Tuesday, Mike Riley threw a bucket of cold water on those hopes, saying he doesn't expect the highly regarded defensive end to arrive until -- at least -- after Sep. 1. The Beavers open the season Aug. 28.

“At this time I’m not counting on him for this season," said Mike Riley on Tuesday.

And that is disappointing news indeed.

With Simi Kuli now expected to miss all of fall camp, the possibility of this being a redshirt year this season for Kuli would seem to increase markedly. Why is that such a big deal?

Because with OSU replacing their entire starting front four, Kuli was expected to immediately compete for a starting spot.

Perhaps more importantly, he was to be a key cog in Oregon State's plan to rotate freely and often up front on the defensive line -- as they did last season on an Oregon State defense that rated No. 1 in the nation against the run.

As BF.C's Dan Norz noted here, the maturation and length of time it takes DE Ben Terry, also a junior college transfer, to assimilate to Pac-10 play now becomes that much more important.

Why the delay on Kuli? Riley said Kuli is still working on his academics. Riley said a best case scenario could change the timetable, and that Kuli could still play this season for OSU.

That would require Kuli receiving his AA and gaining clearance -- and then rapidly showing he's ready to play in the Pac-10 after missing out on the benefits of fall camp. .

In other words, it doesn't seem all that probable at the moment.

Webb not reporting as UA newcomer

The University of Arizona football 2008 recruiting class has everybody reporting on Saturday, except for offensive lineman J’Marcus Webb.
The big 6-foot-7, 310-pound tackle from Navarro (Texas) College, expected to challenge for a starting job immediately, will not enroll.
“We are not counting on him,” UA coach Mike Stoops said.
Webb, who played 10 games at Texas as a true freshman before enrolling at Navarro, appears to be the lone player not eligible from the latest recruiting class.
The Wildcat newcomers report on Saturday before the first day workouts at 6:15 a.m. on Aug. 4.
Many of the latest signees, including cornerback Robert Golden and defensive tackle Solomon Koehler are expected to make an impact immediately.

That's great UoD to get this information as quickly as you have been finding it. When you do, it usually means I don't have to spend much time thinking without all the pieces of information in place. That is appreciated.

It's a little disheartening to see that Kuli came up short of what was expected of him but honestly I wasn't very sure he'd make the team... not on time anyway. This definitely digs into the Beaver depth issue however at DE they are still pretty strong. Could have been better especially with a player with his qualifications.

Moreover, it appears that the Beavers will be playing W1 a couple of players short. I think Afalava being suspended for G1 will hurt them in that game more than Kuli not making the team.

Stanford update just before fall camp...

Here’s the first of four training camp previews. I’m starting with Stanford because Stanford starts first (tomorrow, to be exact). I’ll have something posted about Cal when it opens Monday, and the same with San Jose State on Tuesday.
The plan is to address a handful of pressing issues for each team. A few will no doubt be resolved during camp; a few won’t be — might never be.
The fourth preview post will be something on the Pac-10. I’m not sure what form it’ll take, but by the middle of next week, I should have something on the Hotline that IDs significant camp issues league-wide.

And in a few weeks, probably in the Aug. 19-21 range, I’ll have a schedule analysis and game-by-game predictions for the three local teams, plus Pac-10 predictions.
So let’s start with a six-item August to-do list for the Cardinal:
*** Pick a quarterback.
I don’t expect any of the contenders (Tavita Pritchard, Alex Loukas and Jason Forcier) to win the job this month and keep it for three more months.
But what the Cardinal needs now is separation. It can’t spend the next four weeks dividing practice reps between the three contenders — that wouldn’t prepare anybody for the season.
The ideal situation for Coach Jim Harbaugh would be for one of three to establish himself as the clear-cut No. 1 after, say, one week of camp. Short of that, Harbaugh needs two of the three to gain separation in the first week and then a starter to emerge soon after.
You want the starter getting the majority of reps in the final fortnight before the opener.
Because there are three contenders, Stanford has a more pressing problem than Cal or San Jose State, which need only split reps between two QBs.
*** Protect the tailbacks
If they stay healthy, Anthony Kimble and Toby Gerhart should form a productive tailback tandem — I could see 1,300 combined yards. But Kimble missed five games last season and Gerhart <del datetime="2008-07-31T17:28:05+00:00">missed them all</del> played in part of one. (My bad: How could I forget his 12 carries against SJSU (for 600-something yards).)
For coaches, tailback management is almost an art: You have to let them get hit, or they won’t be ready for game conditions.
But how often they get hit and under what circumstances — that’s where Harbaugh and Co. must be super savvy.
The Cardinal cannot afford to have Kimble or Gerhart limping into the opener.
*** Learn the defensive personnel
The biggest loss on the defensive side was coordinator Scott Shafer, who bolted for Michigan over the winter.
Shafer was well-liked by the players, as was his aggressive system. The playbook is not exectly being re-written, and co-coordinator Andy Buh coached the linebackers last season.
But there is an adjustment period nonetheless: Buh and fellow coordinator Ron Lynn, who is new, must identify which schemes work best with various personnel groupings, and that takes time.
Yes, Buh was on staff in ‘07, but knowing your personnel as a position coach is not necessarily the same as knowing your personnel in the role of coordinator, or co-coordinator.
*** Find a specialist (or two)
Stanford lost Jay Ottovegio, a very good punter, and Derek Belch, a very mediocre placekicker.
It has a replacement for both spots in redshirt freshman David Green, who was the top-rated prep kicker in the country two years ago.
There’s no question that Green could perform both functions, but could he perform both functions effectively? (Punting and kicking require different leg motions.)
Or will Aaron Zagory, who was mediocre as the No. 1 kicker two years ago, reclaim his old job and beat out Green?
Stanford has been offensively challenged since 2001 — and might be so again — and in that time, it has left a ton of points on the field due to bad placekicking.
That’s one position the Cardinal should excel at, year after year.
*** Secure the interior
Despite the presence of stud center Alex Flecther, Stanford has major questions in the interior of its offensive line.
The projected starter at left guard, Gustav Rydstedt, played defense last season, and the projected starter at right guard, Andrew Phillips, has played in all of four games.
Defensively, Stanford’s in very good shape with ends Pannel Egboh and Erik Lorig and tackle Ekom Udofia.
But there’s a hole at the other tackle spot. If Stanford can’t get decent production there, it could lose whatever advantage is gained when offenses double team Udofia (which should happen fairly often).
*** Find a secondary receiver
Talented junior Richard Sherman is the first option, but there is no obvious No. 2.
It could well be sophomore Doug Baldwin, who caught 11 passes in ‘07. Or maybe it’ll be Ryan Whalen or Nate Wilcox-Fogel. Or true freshman Chris Owusu.
It doesn’t matter who emerges; it only matters that someone produce opposite Sherman and take advantage of man-to-man coverage situations.

Keep this in mind. Last year the Bulldogs took Tx A&M to the hilt losing at Tx A&M in 3 OT's 47-45 when they failed to convert a 2 point PAT. That's the kind of game I am talking about here. Should be a great one to watch.

This season Fresno St. is a better team than last season. Most of them are back. Many seniors and juniors at key positions all over the place.
