sure it is not an ultrasound they want to do.my wife said his liver function could be due to his gallbladder needs removed.she said that is a common reason. wish em well.

Sorry, yes - it was an ultrasound, and then a biopsy. My mistake.

Slap a big ass piece of stank tuna in front of him.

My dog had a helluva virus a few weeks back, 106.5 temp, wouldn't eat fro nothing.

It's rough when your animals are sick, cause you can't really talk to them.

Big thing is "not" knowing if they are in pain.

Try the meds they give you and see what happens, hope he eats soon.

good luck

did they rule out the gall bladder. just so young seems it would be gall bladder or he ate something toxic you would not believe the list of stuff toxic to cats. hope all ends well to me it is easier to let go of a person vs a pet.

Heard from the vet just now... Essentially, he´s not in pain (or so they say) and he´s still been fairly active/alert, but he won´t eat. They tried watering food down and using an oral syringe, but he just puked it up. They´ve given him an IV to get hydrated. They could put in a feeding tube, which, would obviously cost more money, and may not even work. The vet thinks it is too early to pull the plug, given his alertness and lack of distress/pain.

Think I´ll bring him home, try to administer whatever drugs they give me, and hope I can get him to eat... Find out when the vet thinks the plug should be pulled, and wait. Thoughts?

Thanks for the update. Good luck.

They haven´t given me a reason for the liver disease... They think Hepatic Lipidosis is most likely, and because I have another cat (and just leave food out) I can´t really know how long it´s been that he´s been anorexic, but given how badly his liver is damaged, it´s probably been weeks... Hence why I feel like an asshole. I knew the two of them were going through food more slowly, but since they were both acting normal, I just assumed they both cut down.

I just want to share a story from my coworker...years ago when I first started working her dog of about 9 years had some liver or kidney or something problem....looked horrible...eventually found out it was cancer....she spent a lot of money on surgeries and doctor visits. Had an operation with a really sad looking dog after.

To my surprise the dog ended up living another 3 or 4 years. There were done diet restrictions but overall lived a pretty happy 3/4 years street. I'm sure she thought it was worth every last penny. I used to think animals hardly justify those huge vet bills but that story that I witnessed first hand makes me see the other side.

Good luck with your cat...hope the tables start to turn.

Damn .. Sorry to read about your cat. Our pets are our family members so I know its hard to watch them be sick. Hope the meds help and that it all works out.

So I brought him home, with a bag of fluids, a ton of food for anorexic pets, and meds (anti-nausea, one for his liver, appetite stimulator, and a antibiotic), I can hardly give him any of these things alone - he´s just too big, and fights too much - but i´ve been buying friends beer for helping me out everyday. The good news is that for the last few days, he´s been eating his regular hard food on his own. Not much, but some. He doesn´t drink, but I´ve been giving him a good amount of liquid with the daily IV - so I guess his disinterest in water is understandable.

When I run out of fluids, sometime mid-week, I´m hoping he´ll start drinking on his own again. He´s still very lethargic, but he is doing some of his normal activities - bird watching out the window, scratching his post, and such... and he´s been acting more affectionate, which I think is good. Still no idea what caused him to stop eating in the first place, or if he´s getting better - will have to wait and see.

And thank you for the concern - it is much appreciated.

So, the cat I posted about ended up dying in early October. A friend was fostering a group of feral kittens, and I offered to take one since it's easier to socialize them when they're separated. Think I'll probably keep him - named him Crony. Just wanted to thank everyone again, for chiming in and giving me solid advice back then, and to show that something good came of it.

Did he die or did you put him down? If the latter, what did the vet charge?

I had him put down - $50. He was so weak at the time that the initial injection (muscle relaxer, I assume?) seemed to kill him. There were a few moments where I thought he'd pull through, and start eating again, but it never happened - and I essentially force - fed him for the month of September until early October when I decided it wasn't a good life for either of us to be living.

I'm sorry for your loss, If the money could have saved him I'd have no problem spending the money, to often people throw their money down a rathole at the end though with their beloved pets. I also think the amounts these vets(not all of them) charge is ridiculous, an mri for a cat should cost a few dollars, not a grand, there are no million dollar hospitals to support, no pension plans to fund, no uninsured emergency room patients to offset.

A few years ago my 80 year old moms cat was dying, I new he was sick but didn't know she was taking him to the vet almost every weekday for weeks, I asked her how much she was paying for all these visits, she said he charged $40 the first time but never charged her again except for a few meds he tried(steroids and such) . The vet must have felt sorry for an old woman with a dying cat.
