Brick and Mortor gives about the same security as what?

"It was Gary Austin's Race and Sportsbook, located on the Las Vegas Strip across the street from where the Mirage now stands, that suffered an alleged robbery in the mid 1980s, shut down and never reopened.
Neither the police nor the regulatory officials pushed for an investigation. Whether it was corruption or incompetence, Austin was not charged with any crime, and was not forced to pay off all the outstanding tickets on which he owed a fortune.
To this day, there are plenty of bettors in Vegas still holding tickets who get steamed at the sound of the name Gary Austin."

That is a flag on the play. First and foremost 85 percent have no clue what this Austin thing is about or that it took place in about 84. Come again please. You totally misrepesented on this one. Thats two full time periods ago from today and has no relation to anything to day.

Well guys, just got back and i was thinking while i was there, the sportbooks out there have NOTHING over the online sites, this may be obvious to most or some of us, but its VERY apparent while out there. Basically its impossible to do the kinds of things i do daily here without even thinking about it. If Wagers, Buying points on totals in baseball, Money line wagers on ALL Pre-season football, forget about that at 90% of all Nevada establishments..
Vegas sportsbooks have nothing on online wagering. The days of people like Frank Rosenthal innovating sportsbooks in Vegas are long gone.

The Internet is the place where innovation happens now. And Internet-only operations all the way, baby..

I am so glad those days of me running around to get the best number are over. It was before they had those cross over walkways on strip. Very dangerous with cars and people everywhere. Ceasars, Flamingo, Barbary Coast, IP, Alladin and Little Cesars were my main places on strip. What a workout trying to get the best of it. Downtown was way easier but the characters down there always bothered me. Stardust to Riv was pretty easy though. So easy now with just a click.

Oh Kyhawk baby wheres the romantisim? I am a Stardust to Riv master. Big Time in fact. You should read my lounge story in my 90's thread.
Oh man. Downtown was the best. I miss the hotdogs down there to this day.

Please note everyone he has the loop covered here. Way before computers thats how it was. Like I said I paid rent by the month but slept most times at the weeklys with my friends so I could get up early and get the good numbers at the books. It was dangerous, but I didn't care.
I ran allover the place and loved it for years. Never thought twice about it. Its just what I did. I dont have a thing to show for it and I regret nothing. I would do it all over again in a minute. Easy.

Feeling naked and alone to me was not having either straight action or a bunch of 20-50 leaders by 9:30 am. I did not know how to function unless I knew I was set up for the afternoon run. Seriuosly.

You young guys could never live this life from the bottom up.

It will never happen again because no standalone books exist anymore except for Leroy's locations. The NGB put in some tough standards on Leroy's as well in terms of keeping money on hand to pay off far beyond what they are ever usually at risk for.

The business model for gambling and the tax rates changed so it was inevitable, but the Austin affair just sped up the process to insure there would be no way standalone books could compete with casinos. With regular casinos someone could pull off something like what happened in Oceans 11 and the casino would still have a ton of money left over to pay customers.

I wouldn't have any problem living in Vegas again. I would miss the ocean in the summer, but I could visit that like I did when I lived there.

Brock how can you compare Chicago's lousy summers with all that heat and humidity to Las Vegas? If you weren't a visitor to Vegas, you wouldn't be running around the streets if you lived there. And as far as the strip traffic goes, if you're a local you know most of the shortcuts around it, or you deal with local casinos which are near where you live.

Vegas has over 300 days of sunshine a year.

Sorry. I overreacted a bit because that event haunts Vegas to this day.
Most who mention it were burned by it and are a lot more sinister when they talk about it. Plus that was a stand alone book in a time not half the rules that exist today existed. That and that was street level bookmaking on par with the offshores today. Things were accounted for the old fashioned way. Not possible today.

When i got off the plane and got outside in Indy, the air smelled better and the feeling of just, i guess, Midwest Air was more than refreshing...not that feeling of being in some blow dryer i guess

SugarBear....had a great time talking to you at the Bash, but I have to disagree with you here...Austin took all that money with him and opened up again. Has millions more than he ever had..he knows who he stiffed and making good on those he stiffed is only right...and alot more posters than you think have not forgotten. I dont disagree with you there. The right people know and thats what counts. I had a great time talking with you to. Thanks for the great insight and for letting me know that my VOG write ups are indeed reaching the right eyes and that my plans are not going to waste. I am sure I will see you soon.
