Vlad Guererro, 10:1 to win AL MVP @ WWTS. He should be about 3:1, IMO.
Throw out: Sheffield (BA waaay too low), Ortiz (not even the MVP of his own team)
That leaves: Ichiro, Manny and Vlad as the only legit contenders for the award.
Vlad: .329 BA, 194 H, 34 HR, 116 RBI, 117 R, 15 SB, .586 SLG, .975 OBP,
.972 FLD
Ichiro: .372 BA, 252 H, 8 HR, 59 RBI, 98 R, 35 SB, .444 SLG, .828 OBP,
.992 FLD
Manny: .310 BA, 172 H, 43 HR, 129 RBI, 107 R, 2 SB, .619 SLG, 1.01 OBP.
DOESNT PLAY DEFENSE
I think Vlad is the BEST all around candidate given the numbers above. Manny is for sure a superior slugger, but he doesn't play defense. Ichiro is a lock Golden Glover and Vlad is putting up close to GG numbers and his having the best defensive season of his career with career highs in fielding percentage.
Ichiro is closing in on a great INDIVIDUAL record, but how are the Mariners faring in general? Right. Bottom dwellers. Plus, Ichiro won the AL MVP a few years ago so there might be some sentiment against giving it to him again.
The one big thing in Manny's favor is the infamous east coast bias that infects all media voting, such as the Heisman. My counter to that is that 1) Manny is a known ASSHOLE while Vlad has always been popular as an "underrated" player 2) I hope that Vlads years with the Expos have "exposed" him to enough east coast media voters that his exposure is high enough.
There is no doubt Anaheim would not be anywhere near a penant race this year without Vlad. He has totally carried this team and is getting el fuego again at the right time, down the stretch.
I think what this will come down too is whether or not Anaheim makes the penant on Vlad's broad shoulders. If they make it, Vlad at 10:1 is an absolute bargain.
