Just got back from the game before making this post. Easy 76-25 win over Miss Valley State, and I obviously loved what I saw. The defense is still there even without the true lockdown defender that Kyle Weaver was for us last year.
Freshman like Marcus Capers, DeAngelo Casto, and Klay Thompson should replace the points that Low/Cowgill gave us, but Weaver is a guy we will never be able to replace. It's going to be on the shoulders of Aron Baynes and Taylor Rochestie, who were great role players for us last season.
The team defense will always be there because of what Bennett brings to the table, but it's going to be interesting to see who steps up for us when we need a big bucket down the stretch of games. I would think Rochestie will be that guy, but he made his mark from the attention that Low/Weaver received. Unless the freshmen/other bench players step up for us we are going to have to win with defense. Fortunately for us the Pac-10 won't be as good as last season so hopefully we can sneak into the tournament finishing 4th or 5th.
Based on this game, it certainly doesn't look like UW has changed much from last season. I'm thinking that UCLA and ASU will for sure finish ahead of us, but I think we can beat out schools like USC, Arizona, UW, etc.
And I'm going to miss Apples for sure. I might hate UW, but I loved watching Appleby throw up 10 3's a game.
