Al Neuharth, in Christmas Column, Calls for Bringing Troops Home from Iraq

By E&P Staff

Published: December 23, 2004 11:00 AM ET

NEW YORK In a column noting the high number of U.S. military personnel in Iraq who will be far from home on Christmas, USA Today founder Al Neuharth declared today that if he were eligible to serve in Iraq, "I would do all I could to avoid it." He also wrote in his weekly column for the paper that America's New Year's resolution should be to bring the troops home "sooner rather than later."

Neuharth, 80, a World War II vet, said he would happily volunteer for that kind of "highly moral duty again." But he would avoid serving in Iraq, likening it to the Vietnam war, which "many of the polticially connected" managed to escape.

He concluded that "support our troops" is a wonderful slogan but "the best way to support our troops thrust by unwise commanders- in-chief into ill-advised adventures like Vietnam and Iraq is to bring them home. Sooner rather than later. That should be our New Year's resolution."

Neuharth served in the infantry in World War II in France, Germany and the Philippines. He noted that he and his colleagues in that war were "properly armed and equipped."

What do you expect coming from that left wing rag. Maybe if we all get together and sing Kum-ba-yah this Christmas, all the terrorists will go away. Evidently, 3000 people being incinerated just over 3 years ago had no effect on you. We need to get some democracy started over there so these terrorists lose their support, won't be able to acquire nukes, and kill 300,000 people over here next time instead of 3,000. For that you should be grateful.

Redneck:

What does Iraq have to do w/9-11? 15 of the 19 flappin hijackers were from Saudi Arabia .. the man Bush wanted "Dead or Alive" is still alive and well!

Lets talk reality .. this "Private War" Bush is hosting that has cost this country over 300 billion dollars and the lives of over 1200 American soldiers, has ACCOMPLISHED NOTHING ...

Wahhabism originates in Saudi Arabia ... invading Iraq and pounding the hell out of a country that was no threat to the USA has ACCOMPLISHED NOTHING ... name one thing? And dont give me the weak ass excuse that the Bushies use that "we have freed the Iraqi people" cause that dog dont hunt based on the fact Bush led this country to war based on WMD's & Imminent Threat that Iraq supposedly was

Bush screwed up ... plain and simple and the majority of Americans are now recognizing that ... too bad you rely on the wisdom of Hannity and Limbaugh in regards to events ongoing in the world today

"We need to get some democracy started over there so these terrorists lose thier support,"

Kinda like Israel?

I guess nobody bothered to tell Timothy McVeigh that there was a democracy in place in the United States, and that where there is democracy people forget about all thier evil plans and what motivates them to build bombs and subsequently kill numbers of total strangers........

You suppose bank robberies also cease to happen when democracy comes to town?

Bring the troops home from thier uranium exile and let the civil war that's going to happen over there begin.

I'm glad we have people that can think two steps ahead instead of one making national decisions. Go ahead, flame away with personal insults Kaya man, if it makes you feel better.

Marco, if you can't connect the dots between an emerging democracy being bad news for terrorists, I can't help you.

No lasting democracy is going to emerge in the middle east, I just wish the dreamers in Washington would realize this fact and quit dumping billions of dollars into that region.

Need to figure out a way to keep the terrorists out of America instead of creating more of them to guard against. Quit coddling Israel and let these idiots fight like they have done since the crusades....

Let the arabs deal with the reputation they are earning.....they are only one rogue airplane or exploded bus over here from being banned from using something as simple as a taxicab or walking with luggage. Yes, it sounds rather racist but you will find out how many Americans will look at thier Arab neighbors the same way people looked at Arabs when they boarded planes shortly after 9/11....

We aren't chasing OBL anymore since we started pissing money down the toilet in Iraq, and we refuse to do anything with Saudi, where most of the hijackers of 9/11 came from.

If the US government refuses to take care of the primary threats then we might as well stay the phuck home.

Marco I totally agree with your statement about letting the arabs live in their own reputation they're earning. That is a good point. I just hope they don't put the final nail in their coffin along with the coffins of hundreds of thousands of U.S. citizens. That's what we are fighting here. We weren't in Iraq when 3,000 of us were incinerated, so I'm not sure if it happens again on a much larger scale that all of the sudden we blame it on our war in Iraq either.

It's not so much a personal insult, I just find people that don't have the sense not to insult themselves amusing.<!-- / message -->
