Just a word of caution here. This USA team is very vulnerable to being beaten by a quality team that will play zone defense. The USA team lacks outside shooting and has difficulty passing through the zone as well as driving to the hoop. Duncan must set up further from the basket then his is use to due to the international triangular key. Italy and Germany both played zone and the former crushed the USA and the latter was beaten at the buzzer by a prayer shot that fell. Serbia played man and got beaten. This will not be easy for this USA team. They will go as far as their "defense" will carry them. They may win the gold, but the current price is still inflated.

The U.S. team, coached by Larry Brown and featuring Tim Duncan and Allen Iverson, has lost an exhibition by 17 points to Italy, which doesn't have one NBA player on its roster. Then the U.S. team needed a three-pointer at the buzzer to beat Germany, which did not qualify for the Olympics. A couple of nights ago in Istanbul, the U.S. team struggled to beat Turkey, which was without its best player, Orlando Magic forward Hedo Turkoglu. On Tuesday, the United States beat Turkey, 80-68, pulling away in the fourth quarter as the crowd jeered and whistled.
I noticed that Italy was favored by 10 points over New Zealand. Ordinarily I would bet big on Italy as New Zealand would not even be in the same league. However, I feel there may be a backdoor on this game since it is the first game of the Olympics for Italy. They may get up big and then coast the 2nd half.

Before they were taken off I noticed that US was #1, Lithuania was #2, Argentina was #3 and Serbia/Montenegro was #5. The spread for Argentina vs. S&M was -1 for Argentina so I also put some money on them since they were more highly ranked in the futures and were favored by only 1 point.
I also put money on Lithuania at -17.5 over Angola. I expect Lithuania to win by much more than that.

5Dimes has lines on the individual games. They have the China/Spain game at 9.5 with a 30 cent line.

While they certainly aren't a lock, the US team is better than the field still. Yes they might lose a game this time or struggle, but it still a matter of someone having to beat them in a big game. Those first two games were the first together for this team and I suspect they will only get better as they get comfortable with their particular roles and the international game. Besides who has a team that your really fear? The US is allowing the gap to close on them due to the non-participation of stars, but it isn't like other countries are getting that much better themselves. Big difference to keep in mind there.
