The worst weather conditions during the tournament are expected on Thursday in the afternoon hours as there will be the potential for a line of severe thunderstorms to roll through.

Any precipitation during play could reduce the firmness of the greens and the course overall, which would be a welcome benefit to the players as the ball will not roll as much after it rains.

"I'm not sure I can think of a course that plays more different than Oakmont in terms of a softened due to precipitation Oakmont and a dry Oakmont,"

"Potentially, the most active period will be during the afternoon and evening," Dombek said. The first group of golfers will tee off at 6:45 a.m. EDT on Thursday.

Final Round

Former world number one Adam Scott is hoping the weather forecast proves spot on so he can adopt a more aggressive approach than many of his US Open rivals.

Rain is predicted for Thursday's first round at Oakmont, where tournament officials felt moved to cut the rough after conceding that it was "too penal" when combined with "legendarily fast" greens.

Such conditions have prompted the likes of Jason Day and Rory McIlroy to plot a somewhat conservative game plan, but Scott is hoping the rain will help him challenge for a second major title.

"I was here a week and a half ago and it was playing nice and firm," said the 2013 Masters champion, who finished fourth at Chambers Bay last year after a closing 64.

"It rained a lot that night and I played the next day with Rory and both of us probably made five or six birdies each that day, playing really nicely. The greens become receptive. The fairways become slightly wider because a ball down the edge of the fairway doesn't run out into the rough. Even though it may play longer, I think it will play much easier if it rains."

"I think you've got to challenge this golf course. You look at the field, you look at the quality of players and how well a lot of the top players are playing and it's going to be a very, very difficult golf course to lay back and execute perfectly all week."

"The greens are just so severe that coming in with a longer club all the time is probably going to catch up with you. And I feel like if any of the top guys play well, you're at a disadvantage if you're plodding your way around."

"That doesn't necessarily mean attack. You've got to be a little bit smart, of course, but I think my plan certainly is to challenge this golf course this week."

How Scott copes with greens running above 14 on the stimpmeter remains to be seen, although the 35-year-old did win back-to-back tournaments earlier this season having been forced to revert to a regular putter following the ban on anchored strokes which came into effect on January 1.

"I think you've just really got to have the right mindset going out this week to enjoy whatever gets thrown at you," Scott added.

"If you get crazy putts, enjoy the challenge of it. Do whatever you have to do to fool yourself that it's not do or die and just have some fun with it. Stay calm."

"It's going to be the same for everybody even though you feel like it's just you making a meal of the golf course. You've really got to have the right mental approach and not get frustrated."

"I think the guys who are going to play well this week will be upbeat and calm and kind of just floating around the golf course and won't get dragged into all the bad stuff that's out there."

Suppose to rain all night. Low scores tomorrow?

Largest Forecasted System thought to be coming through in the afternoon. I couldn't find anything I felt confident in, that was reliable feeling as to how late into the Overnight it would rain tonight/manyana early AM. All I saw was pretty much "60% Chance of Rain Tonight" but there seems to be confidence that the earliest tee times will go off beneath no rain and as near as I can ascertain no rain is expected until those predicted Rolling Thunderstorms come through if & whenever they do during the afternoon pairings.

was there for monday practice round and attended the tourney in 2007. fairways seem wider than 9 years ago and the 2000 trees cleared make a big difference for spectators but doubt it will make it easier on players

greens were nutty...barely tap a ball and it goes 10 feet by the pin. supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow which will make scoring possible for rounds 1-2 but then hot and dry for weekend will speed things up. rough was stupid long....4-5 inches minimum.

watched stenson quite a bit and he couldn't get a putt within 2 feet of any hole. i cannot see him doing well here

where from RT? i'm very near oakmont.

I feel ya. This phenomenon is unbelievable. I lose my fucking mind regularly behind this shit. UK Sky Coverage of Golf is even worse possibly...they'll show a shot then actually cut away to a fuckwad with a golf club re-enacting the shot discussing what was done on the shot for, like, 5 minutes, then show 5 minutes worth of commercials. Its damn near pointless to even try and watch Golf on TV.

Potentially useful info to those who will make Round Matchup Plays going forward.

Most of note on this IMO is the not seeing of Wind getting up to the 15mph area.

Spieth had commented specifically that Winds above 15 mph would = a trainwreck of guys real likely way above par...

"possibly significantly over par" were his exact words....if Winds above 15mph were seen.

Wonder how much Havoc 10mph would make? Thats the worse on this forecast, predicted to be seen for what appears to be pretty much the duration of Round 2.

I will hope that this is inaccurate and I can get more Wind, at some point. Real Bad Conditions make some of my AutoFades go better.

15mph+ would be idea. Supposedly not going to see that though....

I'm.in Pittsburgh and we got crushed with rain today. I'm not really into golf but I've played Oakmont a few times. Course is insanely tough even before they cook it up for the pros coming in.

I'm gonna see if I can't get a handle on the exact amount of wind that we will see tommorow

and if the forecast that I post here proves to be inaccurate I expect tanner12oz to go video-interview

the weatherman asking him why weathermen prove so often to be not just completely fucking useless

but actually harmful costing me wagers cuz they say a thing is gonna happen and the opposite happens

tanner12oz tasked with this cuz he is in the area. Pittsburgh Area Weatherman though. Might need ZJP6050 to accompany tanner12oz as backup. Pittsburgh people, if they think you are criticizing them, they will punch you right in the face.

I know bcuz I totally went off on a guy I saw wearing a Steelers hat after I lost a bet on the Steelers and that guy punched me right in the face.

weather will not be an issue again except for super-fast greens once it really heats up. winds won't get above 10 mph and rain will leave the area in a few hours. 2nd round will start at 1:45pm Fri after 1st round is complete. weather = nonfactor for rest of weekend except for heat and dry greens

This asshole had better know, or I am unleashing you and Tanner on his ass.

Jpeg of the forecast below is better than his On-Air stuff, he's with Pittsburgh FOX News

heres a tape of his On-Air Forecast for last week, he is drunk yes but thats just to combat On-Air Anxiety.

He has a note from his Doc allowing him to get really Drunk before going On-Air so its OK and most importantly his drinking doesn't affect his ability to predict the weather, improves that sharpens it in fact. Thats what he said at least. We will see.

Make sure your Horse is Well Rested and be ready to saddle up just in case. I have confidence in this guy though.
