WASHINGTON (AP) -- In another swipe at the French, a Florida congresswoman has proposed that the government pay for families who might want to bring home from France the remains of Americans who fought and died in the world wars.

"I, along with many other Americans, do not feel that the French government appreciates the sacrifices men and women in uniform have made to defend the freedom that the French enjoy today," Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite said in introducing legislation providing financial help for the reburial of veterans from the two world wars.

Did she forget that General Lafayette was French and that without French assistence we all would be speaking Queen's English right now?

After we dig up those bodies we might as well burn the Declaration of Independence.

Utterly ridiculous.

Maybe, she should rename the French Quarter in New Orleans to the Freedom Quarter, and oh yeah.

Maybe she should ban the French Emblem from the Saint's football club.

This congresswoman has been quite disrespectful to those who fought and died for freedom by forgetting it was the French who died for us, so our great expiriment of Freedom, the United States, could exist.

France is acting like a Representative Democracy, something which Bush feels he is above.

I'm sure you're right, but at least to their credit it is the self-interest of more than 75% of their population.

 

Funny thing about politics...

US preaches & encourages democracy worldwide.

Yet, when a country like Mexico has 93% of their population against invading Iraq at this time, the US wants the Mexican Government to disregard what the Mexican citizens want. I'm sure the US has used every economic threat in the book and then some to apply pressure to Mexico to capitulate to Washington's wishes.

I think the most powerful country in the world should lead by example and not heavy handed policies, against traditional allies and friends.

Talk about getting drunk with your own power!

Frances national "religion" is the same as any other major industrialized country.

I don't think that 75% of the citizens of France have business dealings in Iraq...

But oh, that 4% that DO ????

THATS who France is looking after.

I don't for a second believe that there official government stance, is based on the results of a opinion poll of the French people.

well, we have a bit of a misunderstanding, Dirk.

I wasn't saying that 75% of the French population has business ties to Iraq.

What I'm saying is that at least 75% of the population supports the anti-war stance whether it be that they've been fooled by the businessmen, or they are pacifists, or for whatever reason. My point was that France acting anti-war is at least consistant with the views of its population, whether or not it is GOOD for them.

what's worse is that the US doesn't just do this with Mexico, but everywhere. Whenever the people of a country speak, the US govt. seems to have a problem with it. See: Chile, 1971; Venezuela (recent events, 2 failed US-backed coup attempts)...
US has instigated over 20 armed conflicts since WWII, are these the actions of a freedom-loving democracy, or Imperial Rome?

And the State Departments self serving buzzwords are: American diplomacy is to pursue what's in "America's bests interests".

The Washington Aristrocrats don't give a shit what's right or wrong just what's in their percieved interests.

I guarantee you this, if the US attacks IRAQ< the rebuilding contracts will be doled out by the US to US Corps & probably a bone to the Brits, and the $ will come from IRAQ's OIL income. Now, that's in the US's best interests.

Countries like France, Russia etc will be locked out from oil development & restructuring contracts....
