United Airlines has apologized to a Hawaii teacher who was forced to hold her 2-year-old son on her lap for three-and-a-half hours after an employee gave the toddler's purchased seat to a standby passenger.

Hawaii News Now reports that Shirley Yamauchi says she paid almost $1,000 each for two tickets because children over the age of 2 are required to have their own seat.

She boarded the plane in Houston with her son, Taizo, and they took their seats.

The Kapolei Middle School teacher says a flight attendant came to check if Taizo was present before a standby passenger showed up with a ticket with the toddler's seat number.

Yamauchi says she told a flight attendant about the problem, but the woman just shrugged, said the flight was full, and walked away.

The company issued an apology five days after the incident.

the airlines are protected by the govt.

(probably a good thing)

however in this situation, pretty shitty, there needs to be some amount of culpability.

The kid's ticket was refunded and the Mother received a $500 voucher

they got screwed ...

Not really. It says in the original article that she only bought the extra ticket because it was required.

So they got to skirt that rule (saving her a grand), plus she gets $500 to boot.

People trying to hit the mini-lotto with this shit.

Yeah she was required, but she never got to use that Seat that she Paid for. and not sure how heavy a 2 year old is, but the kid was
on her lap for 3 1/2 Hours.

My point is that She paid, and didn't get to use what she paid for.

and Yeah, I believe people will try to get away with anything now since the First United Flight with the guy being dragged off the flight.
but if you ( the airlines ) provide a service and charge you for that service, I better get that service.
