What happened to the folks of the UK? I can't even call them citizens, as that would involve having some self-respect. The once proud people of Great Britain now appear utterly pathetic with regards to allowing CCTV.

Do the folks of the UK welcome a police state? Please tell me this madness will not go unchecked. I used to admire and respect our friends across the pond. However, they now seem content to reserve their fight only for football opponents.

Buying some wine? Spy cameras will be watching

Big Brother CCTV cameras are to be fitted inside shops and supermarkets on the orders of the state to keep track on anybody buying alcohol.

A law is being quietly pushed through Parliament giving councils the power to order licensed premises to fit the surveillance cameras. Pubs will also be covered.

The footage of people innocently buying a bottle of wine in a shop or a pint of beer in a bar must be stored for at least 60 days, and be handed over to the police on demand.

Anyone buying alcohol - in pubs, shops and supermarkets - will be monitored by CCTV cameras
Critics say it will mean that citizens will now be tracked everywhere they go. The UK already has more than four million closed-circuit TV cameras covering the streets – the largest number in the world.

Cars are also automatically monitored using cameras that check registration plates. Now shops and pubs will also be covered.

The measures form part of the Policing and Crime Bill, but have not been highlighted by Ministers.

Under a code of conduct, which will be enforced by the Bill, any business that intends to sell alcohol will have to agree to install the cameras.

Phil Booth, of the NO2ID privacy campaign, said: ‘We are already a country with more CCTV cameras than anywhere else in the civilised world, but this law is systemising the surveillance of a nation. People will be treated like suspects wherever they go.’

James Brokenshire, a Tory home affairs spokesman, said: ‘The risk is that these provisions could be used as a way to impose blanket CCTV requirements where they just aren’t necessary. This mustn’t be another way of extending the surveillance society by the back door.’

Earlier this week, the Mail revealed how police were warning pubs they would not support their licensing applications unless they agreed to train the intrusive cameras on their customers.

The first blanket policy has been introduced in the London borough of Islington, where all applicants wanting a licence to sell alcohol are being told they must fit CCTV.

Other forces are adopting similar tactics. But the planned new law goes much further, as it will allow councils – which ultimately hand out all licences – to insist on the CCTV cameras.

Ministers have also been restricting the public’s right to ‘watch the watchers’.

Earlier this week, a law came into force which carries a maximum ten-year jail term for anybody taking a picture of a police officer if it is ‘likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism’.

Home Office Minister Alan Campbell, who is piloting the CCTV measure through the Commons, recently admitted that he couldn’t remember the last time he was in a pub.
Mark Hastings, spokesman for the British Beer and Pub Association, said: ‘It’s an extraordinary admission from someone who is proposing measures that, on the Government’s own admission, will cost the pub sector hundreds of millions of pounds a year.

‘It shows how disconnected he is from the realities of what it’s like trying to stay in business in the current environment.’

The Home Office said the clause in the Bill was intended to allow police and councils to target premises where problems were occurring, such as underage sales.

It was not meant to penalise businesses that act responsibly. It will be up to councils to decide which premises must have cameras, and they will be trained on the areas where alcohol is sold.

Liberalism is just another form of european middle class fascism.

Instead of targeting people of different races, they are now targeting people of different lifestyles.

Intruiging to watch my country go doon the pan.
I'm just glad I saw those good times when the British people were a free people and proud of it.

Hey eek,
Is there any sense of outrage over this CCTV invasion, or do folks just utter the ole "I have nothing to hide and I want to feel safe" mantra?
Is there anyone famous or not so famous that is outspoken and has taken a stand against this enslavement?
Does the UK have any sort of civil rights movement? Does anyone ever attempt to sabotage these cameras?
Are bb or pellet guns allowed in the UK? Seems like something fun for the kiddies to do.

When is it time for the Scots to secede?

There's a form of acceptance for CCTVs because if the population ever revolts, the ruling classes are fooked.
There's no escape, except into the sea, so that keeps the masses happy.

The Scots won't secede, only the most stupid people stay in Scotland, especially the most stupid poiticians.

The smart ones go to London, or around the world.

The SNP(scottish nationalist party) has gained minority political power in recent times to counteract the stupid labour liberal and conservative Scottish politicians who are ultimately controlled by London.

A recent example is the Edinburgh "tram" system which is going to be a disaster, (and there probbly wont even be any trams).
This farce is backed by London, via the "scottish" parliament.
Because the SNP is a minority administration(48 out of 100 seats kinda thing) the London based parties have forced the trams scam through through in the hope that the inevitable overbudget financial disaster will be laid at our own front door.

This is big boy national politics, but no-one with more than three brain cells is fooled by whats actually going on.

Compared to Thatcher, the current crew in London are a bunch of woosies.

Most Scots just want local autonomy, the UK has been a successful entity for a long time now.

Even going to the Republic of Ireland from Northern Ireland.
No Passport, no checks, no pet restrictions, nothing.

It's a nice system, and it only needs local autonomy and moderately smart people to keep it going.

Probbly the same as a mini united states system, and as you all allready know, it really doesn't get any better than that.

Actually I do think it gets better than that. I believe the Federalist government has had too much control over local administrations since Lincoln's time. I believe a people has the right to govern themselves without interference from a central source. As we have seen, the US government has usurped its authority over states' rights written in the Constitution and the Supreme Court supports the thuggery.

As you have seen in your country, London controls Edinburgh and its people and only gives back comforts. Why let a group of people that have shown a thirst for control over the centuries control your lives?

I am from the Ron Paul/Libertarian school that believes a local government should have ultimate control and the Federal government should provide protection and few things more.

Look around the USA more and more cameras are going up everyday and you hear very little about it. On highways and street corner on every stop light here in Houston get ready before long someone will be watching your every move.

I can't believe the fine folks of the UK just roll over and allow this sort of thing to happen. This is the stuff we thought only went on in the old Soviet Union. Cameras in your home to monitor you 24/7.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With millions of cameras watching its citizens’ every move, Britain is already one of the world’s leading surveillance states. Now the government wants to go even further, putting cameras in 20,000 private homes “to make sure children attend school, go to bed on time and eat proper meals,” reports the Telegraph.

The households chosen for this gross violation of privacy will only be the most “shameless,” of course. “Sin bins,” they’re calling them. We don’t want to defend abusive or negligent parents, but “intensive 24-hour supervision” of government-disapproved households is just plain creepy.

How fitting for the homeland of Jeremy Bentham and George Orwell.

Time to dust off “Discipline and Punish.”

Telegraph:

Under the Government scheme, members of “Shameless” families are given intensive 24-hour supervision to make sure children attend school, go to bed on time and eat proper meals.

Parents are also given help to stop them leading dysfunctional lives and to combat drug or alcohol addiction.

Around 2,000 families have gone through Family Intervention Projects, but ministers intend to increase its scope to 20,000 more in the next two years – each costing between £5,000 and £20,000.
