SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- The United States baseball team will play for the gold medal Tuesday against powerful Cuba.
Team USA advanced to the title contest with a 14-inning, 3-2 win over Mexico on Sunday. Huston Street pitched 8 2/3 innings of three-hit scoreless relief for the U.S.
"This was just a great, great ballgame," said Coach Ray Tanner. "What a performance by Huston Street. There aren't enough adjectives to describe his performance today."
Seth Smith started the game-winning rally with a one-out single and moved to third on a double by Stephen Head. Paul Janish then drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly.
Righthander Jered Weaver is scheduled to start the gold medal game. He combined with Street to two-hit the Dominican Republic on Monday, and has not allowed a run in 40 consecutive innings playing for Team USA this summer.
