HOME TEAM IN CAPS

Boston +1.20 over COLORADO
All the season previews and so-called experts are calling for both these teams to be “bubble” teams in terms of making the playoffs. I see it differently, as I give the Av’s very little chance while the Bruins could be this year’s dark-horse. Colorado lost a few key players including Jeff Fingers, Jose Theodore, Andrew Brunette and Kurt Sauer. None of them are household names but combined they’re the type of players that are needed to succeed. Fingers played 20 minutes a game and was a +12 while Brunette didn’t miss a game and was the second leading scorer on the team. The Av’s picked up Leafs castoffs Darcy Tucker and Andrew Raycroft along with a couple of other useless players and it would appear that the Av’s got a whole lot worse. Goaltending is a definite concern for Colorado and in this league strong goaltending is a must. Meanwhile, the Bruins just keep getting better and added some much needed offense in Michael Ryder. They also get back a healthy Patrice Bergeron and if he’s not gun shy about playing the same style he played before his injury he’s going to give the Bruins a major, major boost. Marc Savard is incredibly talented and might be the most under-appreciated talent in the game. The Bruins will send out three terrific lines and the third one of Blake Wheeler, David Krejci and Chuck Kobasew might end up being the most exciting of them all. Under Claude Julien the Bruins play a strong brand of defense and in fact, had the third best goals against in the conference last year. The Av’s have home ice advantage here but that’s the only edge they have, as the Bruins are simply the better team taking back a tag. Play: Boston +1.20 (Risking 2 units). <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

Calgary +1.17 over VANCOUVER
The face of the Canucks has changed dramatically and it’s definitely not prettier. They added about 10 or 12 new faces and lost about the same and it should also be noted that a GM who has no experience in running a hockey team runs the Canucks. The moves he made are questionable at best. Marcus Naslund and Brendan Morrison have both been shipped out in favor of some other aging vets that include Pavol Demitra and a bunch of other stiffs (Kyle Wellwood, LW Darcy Hordichuk, D Nolan Baumgartner, C Ryan Johnson, RW Steve Bernier, D Rob Davison, C Jason Krog and D Lawrence Nycholat). What??!!! So, what we have here is a team that is old, slow, soft and sinking and the only good thing about them is Roberto Luongo. The Flames meanwhile, added perennial sniper Michael Cammalleri from the Kings and Rene Bourque from the Black Hawks. Bourque is a great addition, as he’s a terrific penalty killer and can play several different roles. He can also score goals. The Flames were strong before the off-season moves and one could argue that they’ve been the biggest under-achievers over the past couple of seasons so some locker room moves had to be made. See ya Alex Tanguay, a guy who complained all year, was inconsistent and added nothing to the team. There’s no denying, however, that the Flames are talented in every position, especially behind the blue-line. They definitely got better and they definitely are the far superior team on this night. Overlay. Play: Calgary +1.17 (Risking 2 units). <o:p></o:p>

Like the Bruins pick sherwood....

But a few points about your east coast biased view of the canucks.

Steve Bernier and Pavol Demetria are an upgrade on Brendan Morrison - who has really done squat in the last 3 years and is coming off a major knee injury & Marcus Naslund who just flat out need a change of scenery and the leadership mantle lifted off his back.

As for your comment about Old - Soft - Slow that is completely wrong

OLD - we get rid of naslund, morrison, linden, matt cooke, & jeff cowan (sent to ahl) and upgrade the offense with mason raymond, jannik hansen, steve bernier & demetria. Those are all up grades in age and scoring.

SOFT - Bahahahaha quite the opposite hordichuck, mike brown, johnson, Obrien & rypien are going to add some much need toughness to this line up from a year ago.

SLOW - I'll give you that one our whole emphasis at camp has been speed as they relaise in the new NHL team speed is what is needed. so we will see but we have 3 solid lines and then a very gritty 4th line. the defense remains stalwart!

Kyle Wellwood, D Nolan Baumgartner, D Rob Davison, C Jason Krog and D Lawrence Nycholat - these gentlemen may not see the opening night roster and were strickly added as depth players.

One thing to remember is that last year in the last game the Canucks got shelled 7-1 at home by the flames as the team had complete quit and need a make over.

Well they did that and are better off for it.

Tribute to Luc Bourdon will preceed this game as the young defenceman was killed in a motorcycle accident this past summer. Terrible tradegy not sure how the canucks will react to that and the revenge aspect of this game.

But if the 6-1 drubbing of the flames in the preseason is any indication the Cancuks look set to send a message tonight.

Thanks Powerz:
u make some valid points but I still stick to my guns here.

They might be a little tougher but this is the new NHL where speed and finesse is the way to go and the Canucks will feature very little of that. Refs will tolerate nothing this year so expect the Canucks to be spending a lot of time in the box.

Good luck to you too Powerz.

I was on Calgary tonight as well just for pure value sake, but also had to disagree with your take on the Canucks. I mentioned in Csome's thread last week that although they look like small additions, Bernier and Demitra are upgrades over Naslund and Morrison who just had to go. Hordichuk and Johnson (great penalty killer who lead the league in blocked shots last year i believe) actually gives the Canucks a 4th line this year replacing the useless Cowan and Ritchie. (I think Cowan was 0-30 in fights last season) Hansen and Raymond are both burners who bring a lot of speed to the team, and a healthy defence this season with a more focused Luongo (wife and baby now living in Van) should keep this team in almost every single game. They are not cup contenders but they are an improvement over last season and should make the playoffs, I like what Gillis has done so far, still has 10 million under the cap to play around with if the opportunity arises. Goodluck this season
