Two More Mutilated Cats Found In Aurora

AURORA -- Two mutilated cats were found in the city Saturday, a day after another mutilated cat turned up in Jefferson County.

At least 27 cats have turned up dead in the metro area in the past year, with some decapitated and others gutted. Eighteen of those cats have been found in Aurora.

A woman walking her dog early Saturday morning found one of the cats, police spokeswoman Kathleen Walsh said. Police were alerted to the other cat, which was found in a field, by an anonymous tip, she said.

About a dozen cats also have been killed and mutilated in Salt Lake City since last spring and authorities there are in contact with Colorado police.

The Denver Dumb Friends League is offering a reward of at least $12,000 for information that leads to the capture and conviction of those responsible for the mutilations.

As an "owner" of a cat i find this as horrible as it gets, and would gladly lock the perpetrator of these crimes for good.

Do you guys no that pro tennis rackets (the ones atp and wta pros throw away every other set or so) have strings made of cat's intestines, they say it's the highest quality material for the sport. Another horrific practice.

I don't share your sentiment concerning cats. But there are some cruel people in the world. Me I just shoot them between the friggin eyes!

I'd be very concerned if I lived in that area. Psychological studies of serial killers found that they have 3 behaviours in common:
1. Bet wetting
2. pyromania or arson
3. cruelty to animals

Someone (or more) is very sick and needs help before it escalates further.

Someone that is twisted and fvcked up enough to slaugter a cat is capable of far worse. Obviously the rush these moron(s) get from the kill will eventually wear off and what next?

my cat died on me about 2 weeks ago from what looked to be natural causes (even though he was only about 10/11 y/o). it still hurts thinking about it - but i am at peace with myself since he did die naturally. i could only imagine if he had died this way. whoever is responsible for this should have the same thing happen to them!

DENVER, Colorado (AP) -- Four more dead cats have been found in the Denver area, heightening fear among pet owners that a serial cat killer is in their midst.

Authorities say at least 40 mutilated cats have been discovered in Denver and its suburbs in the past year, including four killed over the weekend. The toll in Salt Lake City is 10 cats and another unidentified animal.

Christy Hughes had stopped reading stories about the attacks. Then her husband found the eviscerated body of their 15-year-old cat, Bugsy, outside the front door of their Aurora home two weeks ago.

"I blame myself, because had I read it, I never would have let my cat outside," she said Monday. "I've had a hard time forgiving myself for that."

Authorities are worried that despite the attacks, pet owners still are letting their cats roam outside.

"I've had people say, 'They don't like to stay inside,"' said Temma Martin, spokeswoman for Salt Lake County Animal Services. "Well, look at the stakes here."

In several cases, it appears the attacker kills the cat, then taunts the owner by bringing back the remains. Some of the animals were cut with surgical precision. Some may have been killed by another animal.

The Colorado penalty for aggravated cruelty to animals is up to 18 months in jail and a $100,000 fine.

Hughes said Bugsy was attacked sometime between 1 a.m., when he last went out, and 6:15 a.m., when he was found dead.

She said she is "retraining" her two kids and husband not to let their two kittens outside anymore.

"For a week I couldn't sleep because I just kept seeing my cat over and over," she said. "It breaks my heart seeing somebody else go through this."
