Jim Feist's Comp Pick, Tuesday, July 04, 2017

(979) HOUSTON ASTROS VS (980) ATLANTA BRAVES.
Play UNDER the total.

Reason: Your free pick for Tuesday, July 4, 2017, comes in baseball as Houston heads to Atlanta to face the Braves. Houston loses the DH for this season and comes in with the #5 ranked pitching staff in team ERA. The Astros are 13-5-1 under the total in interleague road games vs. a left-handed starter. Brad Peacock (2.72 ERA) goes here with Houston 8-1 under the total when he starts on the road. Atlanta is 9-1-2 under the total at home vs. a right-handed starter. Atlanta lefty Sean Newcomb (1.48 ERA) has good stuff and the team is on a 12-3-2 run under at home. And the Under is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings. Play Houston/Atlanta Under the total.

BEN BURNS

1* Bonus Play under Red Sox/Rangers.

Boston starter David Price (3-2, 4.61 ERA) is slowly starting to resemble his former self after returning to the rotation from injury, most recently giving up three runs off six hits while striking out seven over seven innings in a victory over the Twins on Thursday. Price has now given up three runs or fewer in five of his last six starts. Texas counters with ace Yu Darvish (6-6, 3.11) who comes in off a loss despite allowing just three runs (only two earned) off seven hits and one walk over six innings in an eventual 5-3 setback to Cleveland on Wednesday, also finishing with six K’s. Regardless, it was his 12th quality start in 17 trips to the hill this season. Recent form displayed by these two starting pitchers suggests that runs will be at a premium in this one. Consider the under.

Play - St. Louis Cardinals w/Lynn vs Urena (Game 954).

Edges - Cardinals: 5-0 career team starts in this series, and 7-1 last 8 home team starts during July… Marlins: Urena 0-2 career tam starts in this series… With Lynn owning a 3.09 ERA with 1.09 WHIP at home this season, we recommend a 1* play on St. Louis. Thank you and good luck as always.

Comp winner for the 4th of July is the Blue Jays and Yankees to land Under the total.

CC Sabathia returns to the Yankees rotation after spending the past few weeks on the disabled list with a strained hamstring. Sabathia has worked his last 6 starts with just 2 runs or less allowed, and the Under stands at 6-1 the last 7 times he has started for the Pinstripers.

JA Happ has found his form, as he makes this start with 5 of his last 7 trips to the hill showing 2 runs or less allowed.

The Under is 3-1 the last 4 times Happ has started, and is 7-2-3 overall the last dozen starts he has made.

Based on the pitching stats for Happ and Sabathia, I will look Under the total in this Blue Jays-Yankees matinee.

2* TORONTO-N.Y. YANKEES UNDER

GAME: New York Mets (38-44) at Washington Nationals (49-34)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 04 - 11:05 AM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The two worst bullpens in the National League lived down to their billing in the opener of a three-game series between the New York Mets and Washington Nationals, taking turns giving up late leads. The Nationals got the last laugh with a walk-off victory and look to continue their dominance of the visiting Mets in a Tuesday morning matchup.

Washington suffered its 14th blown save when New York's Curtis Granderson belted a two-out, two-strike pitch for a tying two-run homer in the ninth, only to see a trio of Mets relievers to give it right back in the bottom of the inning on a pair of walks and Ryan Raburn's walk-off single. Compounding matters for New York is the fact that left fielder Yoenis Cespedes may be unavailable for Tuesday's game after suffering cramps in his hamstring while attempting to corral Raburn's winning hit. The Nationals improved to 8-3 this season against the Mets, who have dropped two in a row following a 7-1 tear to fall 10 1/2 games behind first-place Washington in the NL East. New York will send Seth Lugo to the mound to oppose fellow right-hander Joe Ross, who is 1-2 with a 4.71 ERA in five starts versus the Mets.

TV: 11:05 a.m. ET, MLB Network, SNY (New York), WUSA 9 (New York), MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Seth Lugo (3-1, 3.55 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Joe Ross (4-3, 5.12)

Lugo won for the third time in four starts since making his season debut on June 11, limiting Milwaukee to three runs on six hits over six innings last time out. It was the third quality start for Lugo, who has posted each of his three wins on the road. Lugo's lone defeat came at the hands of the Nationals on June 17 in New York, when he surrendered four runs (three earned) in 6 2/3 innings.

Ross was demoted to the minors after allowing five runs over four innings on April 30, but he's starting to flash the form the team expected in his past five outings. He lost at the Mets on June 18, giving up four runs (two earned) and nine hits over six innings, but bounced back with consecutive strong starts versus Cincinnati and the Chicago Cubs. Lucas Duda is 4-for-6 with two homers off Ross.

WALK-OFFS

1. Granderson, held out of the starting lineup the past two days due to an ailing hip, has homered in six of his last 11 games.

2. Nationals OF Michael Taylor hit a two-run homer Monday to extend his hitting streak to four games.

3. Mets SS Jose Reyes is 8-for-19 over his last six games.

GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (37-45) at New York Yankees (44-37)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 04 - 1:05 PM EST
WHERE: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

J.A. Happ has been solid for the Toronto Blue Jays since coming off the disabled list and the New York Yankees are hoping the same will hold true for CC Sabathia. The veteran left-hander will be activated off the DL to make his first start since June 13 when New York continues its three-game series against the visiting Blue Jays on Tuesday.

After ending a seven-game road trip with a thud in back-to-back losses in Houston, the Yankees kicked off a six-game homestand with a 6-3 victory - sending Toronto to its fifth consecutive defeat. Newly minted All-Star Aaron Judge collected a pair of hits to boost his batting average to .330 just hours after it was announced that he and teammate Gary Sanchez will compete in the Home Run Derby on the eve of the Midsummer Classic. Blue Jays first baseman Justin Smoak, named an All-Star starter for the American League, is 7-for-22 with a pair of homers against Sabathia. Happ, the owner of a 6-2 record and 3.78 ERA in 14 career starts against New York, will attempt to halt the slide in which Toronto has been outscored 37-9.

TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays LH J.A. Happ (2-5, 3.71 ERA) vs. Yankees LH CC Sabathia (7-2, 3.46)

Happ was 0-4 in his first five starts, which included a 1 1/2-month stint on the disabled list, but he has reeled off four consecutive quality starts during which he has surrendered a combined six runs. Happ was a hard-luck loser last time out against Baltimore, allowing two runs and eight hits over 6 1/3 innings. Outfielder Brett Gardner is 9-for-25 with a homer, triple and three doubles versus Happ.

Sabathia was in the midst of a superb stretch, winning five consecutive starts before straining his left hamstring against the Los Angeles Angels on June 13. He permitted four earned runs during the winning streak, which came on the heels of giving up 22 runs in his previous four turns. He was rocked by the Blue Jays for six runs in four innings on May 3 before limiting them to one run on June 1.

WALK-OFFS

1. Yankees 3B Chase Headley had three RBIs in the series-opening win, matching his total from his previous 13 games.

2. Blue Jays 3B Josh Donaldson is 1-for-23 over his last seven games.

3. Yankees 1B Greg Bird (ankle) has had his rehab shut down again and could be facing exploratory surgery.

GAME: San Francisco Giants (33-51) at Detroit Tigers (36-45)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 04 - 1:10 PM EST
WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Michael Fulmer called it a blessing to be named to the upcoming All-Star Game, but the 24-year right-hander knows he has more on his plate before reveling in the moment of the Midsummer Classic. Fulmer leads the Detroit Tigers into Tuesday afternoon's opener of a three-game interleague series against the visiting San Francisco Giants, who have won a season-high six in a row.

"I don't think about stuff like this (being an All-Star)," Fulmer told the Detroit News of being the Tigers' lone All-Star representative. "I think about winning games and getting ready for my next start. I have two more before the break and I am thinking about those first. I've just never saw myself in this situation." While Detroit has dropped two in a row and 11 of 15 to find itself saddled with its worst record at the 81-game mark since 2003, San Francisco is ascending following three-game sweeps of Colorado and Pittsburgh. Brandon Belt, who has hit safely in 12 of his last 14 contests, launched his second homer in three games in Sunday's 5-3 win over the Pirates,

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Matt Cain (3-7, 5.46 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Michael Fulmer (7-6, 3.19)

Cain saw his winless stretch extend to eight starts last Tuesday after receiving a no-decision on the heels of allowing three runs on six hits in as many innings versus Colorado. The 32-year-old, who hasn't won since an 8-4 triumph over the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 15, concluded a disastrous June with an 0-3 mark, 7.77 ERA and 2.14 WHIP. Justin Upton, who is questionable for the series opener after missing the last three games with right side soreness, is a respectable 14-for-49 in his career against Cain while Miguel Cabrera's lone hit in six career at-bats versus the right-hander left the park.

Fulmer snapped a three-start losing skid on Thursday after venturing to within one out of his second complete game this season in a 7-3 victory over Kansas City. The 2016 American League Rookie of the Year allowed two earned runs and struck out seven while facing just one batter over the minimum to subdue the Royals. Fulmer didn't permit a walk in that contest after issuing four free passes in each of his previous two outings.

WALK-OFFS

1. San Francisco CF Denard Span is 12-for-29 since June 25 and is batting .355 in 35 career games at Comerica Park.

2. Detroit 2B Ian Kinsler is just 5-for-31 in his last eight contests to see his batting average drop to .243.

3. Giants SS Brandon Crawford is mired in a 6-for-51 stretch in his past 12 games.

GAME: Los Angeles Angels (43-44) at Minnesota Twins (42-40)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 04 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Los Angeles Angels have stayed in the race for a playoff spot despite the absence of Mike Trout and hope to maintain their position in the final stretch before the reigning American League MVP returns after the All-Star break. The Angels look to pull out of their mini-slump and move back to .500 when they visit the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday afternoon for the second contest of their three-game series.

Trout (thumb), who will sit out the All-Star Game next week, is expected to play his first rehab contest in the next few days, and Los Angeles will need his presence in the lineup soon as it has dropped four of its last five games. The Twins also have struggled of late but won for the third time in nine contests Monday, posting a 9-5 victory in the series opener as Max Kepler went 4-for-4 with a homer to improve to 8-for-13 over his last four games. Minnesota, which has won five in a row against the Angels at home, could be without star second baseman Brian Dozier as he was a late scratch Monday due to lower back tightness. Twins scheduled starter Kyle Gibson will try to defeat JC Ramirez and the Angels for the second time this season after conquering them 11-5 on June 2 in Los Angeles.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH JC Ramirez (7-6, 4.60 ERA) vs. Twins RH Kyle Gibson (4-6, 6.11)

Ramirez has made it past the sixth inning just once in his last six outings, allowing 24 earned runs and nine homers over 30 2/3 innings in that span, which began with a turn against Minnesota on June 2. The 28-year-old Nicaraguan gave up seven runs over 4 1/3 frames in that outing and yielded six runs over 5 2/3 innings last time out against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Robbie Grossman is 2-for-2 with a homer versus Ramirez.

Gibson has gone 0-2 in his last three outings, permitting nine runs over 16 1/3 innings, after winning his previous four decisions over a five-start span. The 29-year-old native of Indiana, who is allowing opponents to bat .317, has worked at least six frames just three times - all in June - over 14 starts. Gibson limited the Angels to two runs and six hits with six strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings in the victory on June 2, improving to 1-2 lifetime versus Los Angeles.

WALK-OFFS

1. Minnesota 1B Joe Mauer is batting .342 with 53 RBIs in 83 career games against the Angels after homering among two hits Monday.

2. Los Angeles 3B Yunel Escobar has hit safely in 12 of his last 14 games, registering six multi-hit performances in that span.

3. Twins INF Eduardo Escobar owns a 10-game hitting streak at home (19-for-40) and has hit safely in six in a row overall.

GAME: Miami Marlins (36-45) at St. Louis Cardinals (40-42)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 04 - 2:15 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The St. Louis Cardinals are two games below .500 but still very much in playoff contention, thanks primarily to the mediocrity of the National League Central. Winners of seven of its last nine games overall, St. Louis looks to build on a season-high 14 runs in the second of a four-game set against the visiting Miami Marlins on Tuesday night.

Rookie Luke Voit clubbed his first major league homer and drove in four runs as the Cardinals improved to 4-0 against Miami this season, scoring 36 times in the four wins. Yadier Molina added three hits and knocked in three runs for St. Louis to give him nine RBIs in his last five games. Marlins left fielder Marcell Ozuna, named an All-Star starter for the National League, had a three-run double in Monday's 14-6 loss and has eight RBIs in his last three games. Miami has lost five of six and must find a way to solve Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn, who is 4-0 lifetime against the Marlins.

TV: 2:15 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH José Ureña (6-3, 3.42 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Lance Lynn (6-5, 3.90)

Urena absorbed his first loss in six weeks last time out against the New York Mets, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits over six innings. The 25-year-old Dominican was 5-0 over his previous seven starts and has pitched six innings in each of his last four outings. Molina is 4-for-5 against Urena, who is 0-1 with a ghastly 10.61 ERA in two starts versus St. Louis.

Lynn made it through six innings for the first time in seven starts on Thursday at Arizona, picking up the victory by giving up three runs. The 30-year-old was hammered in his previous two outings, allowing seven runs each in losses to Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Lynn has been hampered by the long ball, surrendering a career-high 19 on the season, including seven in his last three starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cardinals CF Tommy Pham had three hits and reached base in all five plate appearances in the series opener.

2. Marlins C J.T. Realmuto is 6-for-11 over the past two games.

3. Cardinals 3B Jedd Gyorko exited Monday's game due to cramping in his left leg.

GAME: Pittsburgh Pirates (37-46) at Philadelphia Phillies (28-53)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 04 - 4:05 PM EST
WHERE: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Freddy Galvis welcomed the birth of his second daughter with a smile before greeting the Pittsburgh Pirates with a two-run homer just hours later. The 27-year-old Venezuelan looks to continue the festivities as the host Philadelphia Phillies aim to win their third straight contest on Tuesday when they play the second of a four-game series against their Keystone State rivals.

Galvis, who belted the first pitch he saw for a two-run homer in Monday's 4-0 victory, is batting 6-for-16 with three extra-base hits against the Pirates this season. Maikel Franco has mirrored Galvis by highlighting his 2-for-4 performance in the opener with a two-run shot to improve to 6-for-16 versus Pittsburgh this season. While the majors-worst Phillies have answered losing 16 of 19 by winning four of six, the Pirates have mustered nine runs en route to losing four in a row. Andrew McCutchen, who was the National League's Player of the Month for June, had one of Pittsburgh's four hits on Monday to improve to 12-for-27 with six runs scored in his last eight games.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, ESPN, ROOT Pittsburgh, CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Jameson Taillon (4-2, 2.97 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Mark Leiter (1-0, 4.20)

Taillon tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings against Tampa Bay on Thursday to improve to 2-1 with a 2.42 ERA in four starts since undergoing surgery for testicular cancer. "I feel healthy. I'm back," the 25-year-old said. "That's back-to-back games, six innings the last one (and) 6 1/3 this time, 100 pitches. I feel like I'm back with the team, I'm contributing and we're playing for something." Taillon struggled in his lone career outing versus Philadelphia last year, allowing two homers and four runs total in six innings of a no-decision.

Home runs were the order of the day for Leiter on Wednesday, as the 26-year-old permitted three in five innings of a no-decision at Seattle. "We won, so great," said Leiter, who escaped his first major league loss after Philadelphia rallied in the ninth inning. "Really, the goal as a starting pitcher is to try to keep the team in the game as long as you can" The offensive barrage came on the heels of Leiter keeping the ball in the park in seven of his previous eight outings.

WALK-OFFS

1. National League All-Star 2B Josh Harrison is 0-for-11 with four strikeouts in his last three games for Pittsburgh.

2. Philadelphia rookie LF Nick Williams is 5-for-14 with two runs scored since making his major league debut.

3. Pirates 1B Josh Bell is 0-for-8 in his last two contests on the heels of a four-game hitting and RBI streak.

GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (43-41) at Chicago Cubs (41-41)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 04 - 2:20 PM EST
WHERE: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Manager Joe Maddon squares off against his former team for the first time when the Chicago Cubs host the Tampa Bay Rays for a two-game series beginning Tuesday. Maddon managed the Rays from 2006-14 and led Tampa Bay to the 2008 World Series before leaving for Chicago and helping the Cubs break their 108-year championship drought last season.

Tampa Bay right-hander Chris Archer, who was in the Cubs’ minor-league system in 2009 and 2010, takes the mound in the opener and he has been widely considered a potential trade target for Chicago. Chicago’s starting pitching has been shaky for most the season, but Tuesday’s starter, left-hander Jon Lester, has been the most reliable member of the rotation. The Cubs, who have played 17 of their last 20 games on the road, will enjoy the next six at home going into the All-Star break. Chicago is 22-16 at home compared with 19-25 on the road. The Rays are wrapping up an eight-game road trip and have split the first six contests.

TV: 2:20 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), WGN (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Chris Archer (6-5, 3.92 ERA) vs. Cubs LH Jon Lester (5-4, 3.69)

Archer took a tough-luck loss last time out, allowing three runs and eight hits over six innings in a 4-0 defeat. The 28-year-old has pitched at least six innings in eight straight starts and 12 of his last 13. Archer has faced the Cubs only once, in 2014, and allowed two runs (one earned) over six innings in a no-decision.

Lester has recorded four straight quality starts with the Cubs winning all four games. The 33-year-old limited a potent Washington lineup to one run and three hits over six innings last time out, striking out seven. Lester is 13-9 with a 4.08 ERA in 28 starts against the Rays, most recently in 2014.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Rays have hit back-to-back home runs a franchise-record 11 times, the most in the majors.

2. Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo has reached base in 23 of his last 25 starts.

3. Chicago is 35-1 when leading entering the ninth inning, while closer Wade Davis has converted all 16 save chances this season and 22 straight dating to last September.

GAME: Chicago White Sox (37-45) at Oakland Athletics (35-48)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 04 - 4:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Melky Cabrera brought his hot bat with him on the road and hopes it remains that way Tuesday, when the Chicago White Sox visit the Oakland Athletics for the middle contest of their three-game series. Cabrera registered four multi-hit performances while hitting safely in eight of the 10 contests during Chicago's homestand before going 3-for-6 in Monday's series-opening 7-2 triumph.

The White Sox again were without Avisail Garcia as the All-Star missed his fifth consecutive game with soreness in his left knee, but rookie Willy Garcia filled in admirably on Monday, recording a pair of doubles and an RBI while also scoring a run. Oakland looks to end a losing streak that reached six games after it managed only five hits in the opener. Adam Rosales registered two of them and also drove in two runs, giving him eight RBIs in as many games. Rookie Matt Chapman returned to the Athletics' lineup after a stay on the disabled list due to a knee infection but went 0-for-4 while striking out three times.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, NBCSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH James Shields (2-1, 3.98 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Daniel Gossett (1-3, 5.57)

Shields is coming off his first win in three starts since returning from a strained right lat that sidelined him for two months, a triumph over the New York Yankees on Thursday in which he allowed three runs - two earned - and five hits over 6 1/3 innings. The 35-year-old Californian is looking to avenge a loss to Oakland on June 24, when he was battered for six runs on seven hits and three walks in three frames. That setback evened Shields' career record against the Athletics at 6-6 and raised his ERA to 4.53 in 17 outings.

Gossett was tagged for five runs and seven hits over five innings in a loss at Houston on Thursday. The 24-year-old native of South Carolina will be making the fifth overall start in the major leagues on Monday and second at home, where he lost to the Astros on June 19 despite allowing only two runs in 6 2/3 frames. Gossett posted his only career win opposite Shields at Chicago on June 24 after giving up two unearned runs and five hits in six innings.

GAME: Baltimore Orioles (40-42) at Milwaukee Brewers (45-40)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 04 - 4:10 PM EST
WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Milwaukee Brewers picked on one of the many struggling starting pitchers for the Baltimore Orioles in the opener of their three-game series and will try to do so again when the teams meet Tuesday afternoon. The Brewers jumped all over Wade Miley - who gave up seven runs in 1 2/3 innings - en route to an 8-1 win Monday, their fourth victory in the last five games.

Miley has an ERA of 11.69 over a span of six appearances and Tuesday's starter - veteran Ubaldo Jimenez - enters with a 6.48 mark overall, although he is coming off his best start of the year. Milwaukee pounded out 11 hits in Monday's rout, including three apiece by Manny Pina and Orlando Arcia, and it may have dodged a bullet with an injury to slugging third baseman Travis Shaw. After singling in the first run of the game, Shaw was struck by a pitch in the second inning and later left the contest, although he expects to play Tuesday. Baltimore managed five singles and a double in the opener as it fell to 15-26 on the road.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Ubaldo Jimenez (3-3, 6.48 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Jimmy Nelson (6-4, 3.43)

Six days after giving up nine runs over 2 1/3 innings in an ugly outing at Tampa Bay, Jimenez spun eight scoreless frames to top Toronto his last time out. He struck out a season-high eight, walked one and let up two hits to win for the second time in his last three outings. The 33-year-old is 3-1 with a 2.63 ERA in six career starts against the Brewers but has not enjoyed success against slugger Ryan Braun, who 8-for-20 with three doubles and a triple against the righty.

Nelson has won four of his last five decisions and recorded at least 10 strikeouts in four out of seven outings. He fanned 11 and limited Cincinnati to two runs and three hits over seven stellar frames Thursday. The University of Alabama product, who has yet to face Baltimore, has a 2.64 ERA in nine home starts this year.

1. Pina is 7-for-16 with two homers and six RBIs in a four-game hot stretch.

2. Orioles 3B Manny Machado is 2-for-27 in his last seven contests.

3. Shaw has posted 12 RBIs over a 10-game stretch.
