RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 1 TWIRLING MILLIE 7/2

# 4 ARTIC VORTEX 8/5

# 3 CAROL'S A CASE 9/5

I lean toward TWIRLING MILLIE here. She looks solid in this slot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the midpoint. ARTIC VORTEX - She has been running admirably lately while recording strong Speed Figures. Seems to have a quite good class edge based on the latest company kept. CAROL'S A CASE - Could provide positive dividends based on formidable recent Equibase Speed Figures with an average of 64. Is a contender - given the 66 speed figure from her most recent race.

Louisiana Downs - Race #3 - Post: 4:09pm - Maiden Claiming - 7.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $8,500 Class Rating: 61

Rating: 4

#1 ZAR'S STAR (ML=4/1)
#6 STERLING APPEAL (ML=10/1)

ZAR'S STAR - I usually like playing sprint horses who are 3-4 races into a return. I expect a lot from this thoroughbred. His speed ratings under similar conditions are tops in this group. The horse with the top average class figure in turf events is usually a solid play. This racer fits the bill. This horse collects a lot of dough per start. I believe he will boost the lifetime bankroll in this event. STERLING APPEAL - I really like sprinters that make a fast turnaround. Looking at today's Equibase class figure, this pony is up against an easier bunch than in the last race at Lone Star Park.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 A CROWN FOR BEAU (ML=9/5), #4 COFFEE CUP (ML=3/1), #3 TWO DATE (ML=6/1),

A CROWN FOR BEAU - A strong horse that's been running well, but he's been off the track in the mornings lately. COFFEE CUP - This gelding is always close, but just doesn't win. Tough to play him on the top end. Don't feel this horse will do much running in today's race. That last speed rating was quite unimpressive when compared with today's class figure. TWO DATE - Just don't believe he is worth it at the likely odds.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Putting our cash on #1 ZAR'S STAR to win. Have to have odds of at least 7/5 or better though

Race 5 - Claiming - 5.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $6200 Class Rating: 59

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 119 LBS.; OLDER, 123 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE JUNE 25 ALLOWED 3 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $5,000

RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 6 DUNKIRK SURVIVOR 2/1

# 3 CHARLIES WATCHIN 7/2

# 5 WHITE LACE LADY 5/1

I give the nod to DUNKIRK SURVIVOR here. Will probably come out sharp - I have liked the way this filly has moved sharply to the front end recently. Could beat this group of horses in this race given the 50 Equibase Speed Fig garnered in her last outing. WHITE LACE LADY - Could best this field based on the Equibase Speed Figure - 59 - of her last contest.

Parx Racing - Race #1 - Post: 12:55pm - Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $21,000 Class Rating: 88

Rating: 3

#3 PICOZZA (ML=6/1)
#8 CHIPPEWAWHITECHIEF (ML=5/1)
#1 ONE SIDED (ML=5/2)
#7 MAVERICKS GUN (ML=8/1)

PICOZZA - This jockey and handler have a lucrative return on investment when they work together. CHIPPEWAWHITECHIEF - The jockey/conditioner duo of Gonzalez and Moore has a strong ROI together. ONE SIDED - I like when a pony wins after shipping in from elsewhere. It shows that they really like the track here. I'll take this horse to win again. Garcia is up for another event today after riding aboard this animal for the 1st time on July 10th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. EPS (earnings per start) is something that I believe can be a crucial handicapping factor. This thoroughbred is ranked the highest in this group. I like the fact that this horse's last fig, 84, is tops in this field. MAVERICKS GUN - Last workout was the second fastest of the day. Unquestionably on edge for a good one today. Velazquez has an 'uncoupled' entry here. Best to watch out for the longer priced half.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 STAR OF SARAVA (ML=7/2), #2 SIR SIDNEY (ML=9/2), #5 BECAUSE I'M HAPPY (ML=8/1),

STAR OF SARAVA - Finished fourth in his most recent performance with a substandard speed rating. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this field. SIR SIDNEY - Don't think this less than sharp equine will make an impact in today's race. That last fig was most unsatisfactory when compared with today's class figure. BECAUSE I'M HAPPY - Tough to bet on at 8/1 odds after the two most recent outings. Finished fourth in his most recent effort with a mediocre speed rating. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to prove victorious after that in this field.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - PICOZZA - I'm making a wager on this one today. An easier group is going to make a big difference. Will be competitive today.

WNBA Betting Recap - 7/10-7/23

League Betting Notes (Monday, July 10 through Sunday, July 23)

-- Favorites went 14-8 straight up (SU)
-- Underdogs went 12-10 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams posted a 14-8 SU record
-- Road teams posted a 12-10 ATS record
-- The 'over/under' went 11-11

Team Betting Notes

-- Atlanta (9-11) has been decent at home and awful on the road, and that hasn't changed over the past two weeks before the All-Star break. The Dream has dropped five in a row on the road, including a narrow 100-96 loss to the Mystics on July 19. The non-cover snapped a 5-0 ATS run for the Dream.

-- The 'over' has cashed in five in a row for Atlanta heading into the All-Star break. They'll put that streak on the line Tuesday at home against the Mercury. The over cashed in an 89-84 loss against Phoenix (11-9) in the most recent meeting July12.

-- Chicago (8-13) continued their dramatic turnaround with a pair of road wins last week in Seattle (9-11) and Los Angeles (14-6). Their 82-80 win in L.A. came as 12-point underdogs, or plus-550 on the moneyline. After opening 3-12 SU over the first 15 outings the Sky has posted a 5-1 SU/ATS mark over the past six outings.

-- Connecticut (12-9) dropped their final game before the break, but they're still an impressive 6-2 SU/5-3 ATS over the past eight outings. They'll take on the red-hot Sky in the first game out of the break on Tuesday.

-- Dallas (10-12) sputtered down the stretch in the first half, losing four of their final six before the break while also going 2-4 ATS during the span. While they weren't terribly productive against the spread, total bettors love the Wings for their 5-0 'over' mark across the past five outings.

-- Indiana (8-13) stumbled down the stretch, wrapping up the first half on a 1-6 SU/ATS run over the final seven outings. Total bettors are big fans of the Fever, though, as the 'under' is 9-3 over their past 12 outings.

-- As mentioned, the Sparks had an ugly loss against the Sky to close out the first half. It was especially shocking considering they entered the game 9-0 SU at home with a 6-3 ATS mark. The 'under' also continues to hit on a regular basis for the Sparks, going 6-0 over the past six and 10-1 over the past 11 outings.

-- Minnesota (16-2) was the class of the WNBA in the first half, with losses June 17 against the Sun and July 8 on the road against the Sky. That's it. They have been a bit shaky over the past few weeks against the number, going just 5-4 ATS over the past nine outings.

-- The Mercury lost Brittney Griner in the fourth quarter of their game July 12 against the Dream. In the three games she has missed, the Mercury are 0-3 SU/1-2 ATS while averaging just 71.3 points per game (PPG). They were averaging 83.2 PPG in the previous 17 outings before Griner went down.

-- San Antonio (3-18) lost their first 14 games, but they're a respectable 3-4 SU/4-3 ATS over their last seven outings. Two of the wins came against the slumping Fever, once in Indianapolis as eight-point underdogs (plus-325 on the moneyline) on July 12 and once at home as five-point 'dogs on July 20 (plus-180 on the moneyline).

-- Washington (12-9) won just two of their final six games down the stretch in the first half, also going 2-4 ATS during the span. The Mystics did get well in their final game, winning 100-96 against the Mystics, the third time this season they've hit the century mark. They're 8-2 SU/6-4 ATS in 10 games at home this season while going just 4-7 SU/ATS in 11 outings on the road.

MLB | Rockies vs Cardinals
Play on: Rockies +130 at 5Dimes

Despite Lance Lynn's success this season, the Cardinals are struggling and look primed for a lost year. The Rockies on the other hand are 7-3 in their last 10, and bring their high powered offense to the road. Charlie Blackmon has hit safely in 17 of his last 18 games. From top to bottom, the Rockies offense is a challenge.

MLB | Reds vs Yankees
Play on: Reds +152 at 5Dimes

This is the Yankees' first home game since July 9 following an 11-game road trip. They are hosting the lowly Reds. So you have to wonder just how focused the Yankees will be especially with a lot of young players on their roster. One of those youngsters is rookie pitcher Jordan Montgomery. He's facing another rookie starter in Luis Castillo. Montgomery is making his 19th start and showing signs of hitting that rookie wall. His ERA in his last three starts is 6.91. The Twins got to him for six runs in six innings during his previous start this past Wednesday. Castillo has made just six starts. His ERA is 3.86 compared to Montgomery's 4.09. I have a high regard for Castillo and his potential. He's struck out 43 in 35 innings. He's also faced much better hitting teams than Montgomery has. Castillo has made two starts against the Nationals, two against the Diamondbacks, one versus the Brewers and one against the Rockies at Coors Field. The Nationals are No. 2 in the league in runs. Colorado is No. 3. The Diamondbacks have scored the sixth-most runs. Only two teams have hit more homers than the Brewers. By contrast, Montgomery has faced four below average offenses during his past seven starts having gone against the Twins, White Sox, Angels and A's. The Yankees do hold a bullpen edge, but some of that advantage is reduced by how poorly closer Aroldis Chapman has been pitching. (Editor's note: Fresh off moving his unbeaten Canadian Football League record to 10-0 with a Game of the Year winner on Monday, Stephen Nover turns his full attention to the ball diamond today where in addition to this free selection he's found two powerful sides plays. Stephen is so strong on these two games that he's putting them out together as his Parlay of the Week.)

MLB | KC vs DET
Play on: OVER 8½ -110

Royals/Tigers 7:10: Fulmer was lit up like a torch July 20th in KC to the tune of 5 ER on 7 hits in 2 2/3 IP. KC is currently hitting really well launching 12 HRs over the last 3 games. On the other hand, Danny Duffy is vulnerable here; after all, the Tigers are driving in a healthy 5.83 RPG on a .283 BA vs lefties. Duffy is 10-4-2 O/U on the road and 5-0 O/U vs Detroit. Heavy "over" trends in this series give us a play on the "over".

Play - Pittsburgh Pirates w/Taillon vs Bumgarner (Game 909).

Edges - Pirates: Taillon 4-2 with 2.31 ERA team starts away this season… Giants: Bumgarner 0-6 team starts this season, and 0-2 last two home team starts in this series. With Taillon in strong KW form with 22 Ks with 4 BBs last three starts, we recommend a 1* play on Pittsburgh. Thank you and good luck as always.

MLB | NYM vs SDG
Play on: UNDER 8½ -115

I'm recommending a play on the Under between the Mets & Padres when Seth Lugo & Jhoulys Chacin square-off at PETCO. Lugo is using his curveball more often and he's posted a 2.60 ERA & 1.04 WHIP in his last three appearances. The righty will face a Padre offense plating less than 4 rpg at home this season. SDG will counter with Chacin, who owns one of the oddest home/road dichotomies you'll find. Chacin owns a dubious 7.35 ERA in 10 road starts, but he's virtually unhittable at PETCO where he's also made 10 starts, but with much different results. The right-hander owns a sizzling, 1.94 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and .198 BAA on the home bump. The Mets have been middle of the pack or worse in OBP and OPS in July, while the Padres own MLB's worst home batting average and second worst home OBP and OPS. We look for the hurlers to get the better of the hitters in this one and we're recommending a play on the Under between the Mets & Padres on Tuesday night. Thanks and GL! Scott Spreitzer.

Play on: UNDER 8½ +100

Royals vs Tigers Free Pick July 25, 2017.
The Royals beat the Tigers 5-3 in extra-innings in Game 1 of this series in Detroit. We might see another pitcher's duel tonight, with both teams turning to the front end of the rotation. Michael Fulmer will toe the slab for the Tigers, and he's having another fine season. Fulmer (10-7, 3.35 ERA) was rocked for eight runs in just 2 2/3 innings in a loss at Kansas CIty his last time out. He almost went the distance (8 2/3 innings), allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out seven in a home win over the Royals earlier this year. He's 6-2 with a 3.72 ERA in 10 starts in the Motor City this season. The Royals hand the ball to Danny Duffy, who picked up a win against the Tigers his last time out. Duffy has quietly been having a solid season, going 6-6 with a 3.71 ERA in 15 starts for the Royals this year. Not bad considering that he often doesn't get the run support that he did in previous seasons. Kansas City ranks 25th in the majors in runs scored, and the Royals have failed to reach the total in seven of their last 10 when Duffy starts. Take UNDER. GL, Jesse Schule
