Of all the "All-Star Games", MLB's is the only such event in which the competitors play at or very near 100% percent effort because of the home-field advantage factor during the World Series. That said, it's still not exactly the same as a regular season contest, as coaches are encouraged to use as many players as possible, while pitchers are changed every other inning.

One major blow for the NL is not having Max Scherzer of the Nationals available.

A look back at the last ten MLB All Star Games sees the American League with a firm 7-3 lead, including having won the last two straight, a 3-0 result at Citi Field in 2013 and a 5-3 victory at Target Field in Minnesota last year.

Despite not having Scherzer available to throw in this game, I think today's event favors the Senior Circuit. Both teams are loaded with offensive talent, but this game means a lot to home town favorite Todd Frazier and as good as Mike Trout and Josh Donaldson have been over in the AL, no one has been more dynamic than the Nationals' Bryce Harper over the first half, a clear favorite to win the All-Star Game MVP this season.

If you don't mind sprinkling something on an event like this, I'd recommend a second look at the NATIONAL LEAGUE this year.

After a heartbreaking loss to Jamaica in their second Group B fixture in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Canada will be desperate for three points in front of the home fans as they shift to BMO Field in Toronto Tuesday.

The Canadians drew with El Salvador 0-0 to open the tournament and were on pace for another nil-nil affair against Jamaica before allowing a last-minute goal to Rodolph Austin.

"It just comes down to us getting a win against Costa Rica and the one advantage we have is that we're playing at home," said midfielder Julian de Guzman. "Going into Canada will give us confidence to get a win. It's still there for us, I know the guys won't feel happy about the result (against Jamaica) and it's just a matter of bouncing back."

BIG BAD BUBBA - When this jock and trainer join forces you have to take a look. Martinez and Martinez have been fabulous together. Was in a $5,000 Maiden Claiming race at Penn National last out. That race had an Equibase class figure of 59 and he is moving down in this race. A certain win candidate. BIG AMOS - I am keen on that last outing on June 14th at Mountaineer where he finished third. Clemente and Poole perform well when they unite. It's hard to beat a +77 return on investment for a rider and conditioner. Just check out his most recent fig, 47. That one fits well in this field.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1A SLOT MACHINE (ML=6/5), #1 UNION IN THE CITY (ML=6/5), #2 INDIAN EXCESS (ML=9/2),

SLOT MACHINE - This chalk horse ran on June 20th and hasn't had a work since. UNION IN THE CITY - 70/60/41, are the decreasing speed figures for this runner. Not likely that the speed rating he recorded on Jun 27th will hold up in this event. INDIAN EXCESS - Should have at least finished in the money in the last couple months in a sprint affair to be worth it at low odds in a sprint. Hard to play a vulnerable equine that lays up for a long time then doesn't finish in the money off the extended layoff. Notched a common speed rating last time around the track in a $5,000 Maiden Claiming race on June 27th. Doubtful to see an improved performance off of that fig.
