Northfield: Tuesday 6/17 Analysis + Pick Four ticket
By Jeremey Day
DRF HARNESS

Race 8 - $10,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Jeremey’s $1 Pick Four Play:

1,7,8 / 2,5,9 / 2 / 1,2,5,8 = $36

Best Bet: BELLES LUCKY (12th)

Spot Play: WILD NORDIC (11th)

Race 1

(1) WHERE U WAS JAY beat a very good horse last out, gets the best post, and will be extremely tough to beat. (3) FEATURE MATCHUP has some upside and is probably the only threat to the top choice. (2) DO WHAT is 0 for 19 on the year but will offer a big price and could hit the bottom of the ticket.

Race 2

(2) EASTER BAY was a game winner last race and faces a similar field. (3) MR RUPPEL lightly raced pacer hasn't had much luck in his brief career but did show a decent burst of speed last out. (5) WEIRD EARZ looks terrible on paper but does get a better starting spot adding lasix for the second time.

Race 3

(1) MOM'S LOOKER tough to go against the top pilot with the best horse; short price. (2) SOUTHWIND AUSTIN well bred trotter had no chance in his recent effort from a tough post. Five-year-old trotter should be in line for a good trip. (4) MASTER LAD PRO rarely wins and just races evenly; use underneath.

Race 4

In a really weak an inconsistent field (3) LADYDI'S BAYSIDE will offer a huge price and with some racing luck could be a player late. (6) LOGAN'S A WINNER has a recent win and has flashed some gate speed. (7) RANDOM INTENT takes a big drop in class but the 4-year-old has yet to show much; command a price.

Race 5

(8) FOLLOW A DREAM was not on his game last start unable to close the deal late. The 4-year-old could offer a better price off the loss; big chance. (1) HEARTACHE'S BLUES last two efforts have been tremendous. You can add that to the fact the pacer picks up a huge driver change. (4) SOAKING UP THE SUN lightly raced 3-year-old has a lot of ability and room to improve.

Race 6

(8) MR ABERDEEN scored with the top driver last out impressively. The 5-year-old will need to leave for position for a chance to hit the top spot again. (6) DUNKS BROTHER well bred colt has been progressing slowly and makes his first start in a new barn. (7) CHAD is the question mark in the race making his debut off a sterling qualifier. The 3-year-old could be much more talented than the field but could need a start.

Race 7

In a field with few contenders (1) JULIE'S DAVINCHIE gets sent out for a low percentage pilot but does have gate speed with the best post. (6) OIL SLICKER if the pacer doesn't make the top a few others have a big shot. (9) CHANAS LUCKY THREE does have a recent win but needs a smooth trip.

Race 8

(8) EAGLE JEAN will need some luck with the bad post but the stallion trotter has been racing better than his lines appear. (1) MISS RILEY mare has ability and a good burst of speed but rarely wins; threat. (7) KELSEY'S STAR mare makes her first start for a new trainer facing much easier, however the 4-year-old has a tendency to lack stamina late.

Race 9

(9) WESTERN MARK bumps down in class and should have a good shot late against a soft field. (5) SHARP SHUTTLE has paced some fast miles up in class on paper but hasn't been competitive. (2) BACKDRAFT HANOVER has some positives including third start back off a layoff and also faces easier.

Race 10

(2) DON'T FOOL ME NOW should offer a better price with the bad-looking last line. Ten-year-old gelding was backed thru the field last start by a horse who refused to sit the pocket. The veteran pacer will be looking for revenge; fires early. (4) PL EARL will also be looking for the top and could get a pocket trip. (1) EX DREAM will offer a big price and should benefit from the best post; use underneath.

Race 11

(8) WILD NORDIC probably has the most ability in the field but will need to find a good spot out of the gate for his best chance. (5) IKNOWWHATBOYSLIKE picks up a good driver change but has yet to win on the year. (2) TRIPOLI has more talent than what the mare has been showing but is probably best used underneath with a low percentage pilot.

Race 12

(2) BELLE'S BECKY went a big trip last out closing nicely from a tough spot. The 4-year-old should be much closer turning for home facing significantly weaker. (8) MARTINA'S QUEEN well bred mare can trot fast miles from time to time but is saddled with a bad post. (5) PERFECT HEART BEAT parlayed a pocket trip for an easy score last race and picks up the top driver as a bonus.

Race 13

(4) CHAMP IAN has a ton of speed but needs to ration it out; vulnerable late. (6) CAN REPEAT gelding makes his second start back off a layoff and has room to improve. (3) BAY SHARK put in a big effort out of the eight hole last week and would be a threat with a similar effort.

Race 14

(9) WILDCATS TERROR finds a suspect field full of question marks; threat. (3) COIN OF THE REALM gets sent out for a driver who rarely wins but is probably one of the faster horses in the race. (7) MONTOYA HANOVER has been improving in a new barn and finds a weak field.

Race 15

(3) MAJOR AT HEART faces easier, was the driver's choice, and will be used aggressively. (2) WATTAFINE RUSTY is very inconsistent but a good effort could put him on the board at a price. (7) PANDAPOCKET will likely take heavy tote action off his eye popping victory last out. The pacer has not raced like that in a very long time and might not get another smooth trip.

DRF HARNESS

Race 4 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet: SURPRISE HANOVER (11th)

Spot Play: JUST CALL ME LADY (10th)

Race 1

(7) JA EL DIAMOND has the most wins and earnings this season than any of her nine rivals. (6) THISGIRLISONFIRE comes out of the Parsons' barn and showed a much improved effort in her latest. (4) MEADOWVIEW VICKY will make her second career start following a break last start at Georgian Downs. She broke early in the mile and recovered well to finish third.

[DRF HARNESS: LIKE us on Facebook and get timely updates on the latest harness news]

Race 2

(6) ELIZA DREAM has a good record this season, draws in the middle of the gate and gets Hall of Famer Pierce in the bike. (4) CHELSEAS CHANCE comes from another Hall of Famer in McIntosh and will look for a better effort after missing the board in both starts this season. (9) HOLLYWOOD DRAMA has won two straight coming into this contest and has quick gate-speed to overcome post nine.

Race 3

(1) PLEASE OKAY moves into the Fellows barn and was an open-length winner in her latest at Harrington. (8) CAPTURETHEMEMORY will make her first start of the campaign and looks like she has been well prepared with two solid qualifiers. (10) MISSYS GA GA hasn't missed the board in two starts this season and is fresh off a win for trainer Dion.

Race 4

(6) EMBRY SEELSTER hit the board for the first time last start with a second-place effort. She continues to improve with each start and closed very well in a good time. (8) MAJOR HANGOVER comes out of the Jones' barn, which has been terrific this season. This filly has hit the board in two of five starts this season and did all the work on the front last start before tiring down the stretch and settling for second. (1) NINE LIVES HANOVER was racing in the non-winners of two level in both her starts this season and drops down into a level where she should be much more comfortable.

Race 5

(9) MOJITO AS comes out of the Lorentzon barn, is fresh off an eye-catching win and has hit the board in three of four starts this season. (7) ***** MAC raced well in her elimination of the SBOA and will now face an easier group of fillies. (8) CAROUSAL HALL has missed the board once from six starts this season, is versatile and shows the speed needed as she's raced primarily at Vernon Downs.

Race 6

(8) EXCUSE ME PLEASE has shown much improvement in each of his last four starts and has been a top candidate at this level. (2) HOLY MOLIE MAGGIE draws inside after a post 10 start last week. She raced well to finish fourth and should be better positioned in the early going this week. (10) DESIGNER GENES was a winner last week at this level and may offer a fair price with a post 10 start.

Race 7

(2) PORSCHE SEELSTER enjoyed a successful season last year with over $100K in earnings and has come back this season very well. (7) JOKES JET comes out of the McNair barn and this filly has posted back-to-back winning qualifiers over Saratoga. (8) FRAME WORTHY was terrific two back when she won at first asking in 1:54 3/5 from an outside post and tough trip.

Race 8

(1) BWT TAJ gets the rail and has been racing spectacular since arriving in the Auciello barn. (2) DELCREST JULIAN moves into the Moreau barn, who has trained this son of Oaklea Julian in the past and draws inside. (5) FORK has been racing very well and is a top threat when he minds his manners.

Race 9

(6) QUADROPHENIA was the heavy-favourite last week in her debut on this circuit and made a costly break in stride. Menary spoke highly of this daughter of Kadabra during a pre-game interview, which also played into my handicapping. (10) LOVE DETECTIVE comes out of the Takter barn and will have to overcome post 10. She continues to trot in the 1:56-range, which is quick enough to be a main threat in this Grassroots level. (3) P L HALLE was impressive in her career debut last week for trainer Clements.

Race 10

(4) JUST CALL ME LADY is my upset play of the night. She continues to show the speed and is due for a win. (8) K D BELLA will likely be the favourite when the gates unfold with her credible record this season and she is a top candidate. (5) STEPHANA DREAM has hit the board in two of her last three starts and moves onto this circuit.

Race 11

(9) SURPRISE HANOVER recently raced in the North America Cup eliminations and a division of the Somebeachsomewhere. He returns to this non-winners of two level and should be a top threat. (7) ARI ALLSTAR comes out of the Gillis barn and has posted a pair of credible qualifiers. (5) V I P BAYAMA qualified well for trainer Larocque, draws well and enjoyed a solid rookie campaign. He shows the speed and paced home strong in his latest qualifier.

Race 1

(6) SIMPLY BUSINESS Closed well for the place spot last time out. Gelding has a good shot to move forward against these. (1) ITS A GOOD THING has wheeled off two straight victories. (2) ELECTRIC SHOOTER did show some early zip last out at Philly.

Race 2

(3) FOX VALLEY ILIAD should rebound off his latest effort. Trotter can get it done tonight. (5) TOURIFIC was second best at Philly recently. (8) SECOND HAND NEWS was sent down the road for all the glory last time out.

Race 3

(3) THE BRUISER flashed some speed in his latest try. Gelding is seeking his first score of the year; maybe. (1) FOOL TO CRY rallied strongly for the show spot in his recent trip. (4) ORR HANOVER could have a say in the outcome.

Race 4

(5) WHOLLY LOUY gets serious post relief and that's a good sign for this pacing gelding to make tonight a winning one. (3) TWIN B HOLLISTER raced evenly in his last start. (2) SAILING CRUISE could land a share of the purse.

Race 5

(3) LUCKY COLBY just held on for win honors recently. Trotting gelding is fit and ready to make it four in a row. (4) CRAZED N LINDY put in a game effort in his latest. (2) WILD SMILE has hit the board in his last six trips to the post.

Race 6

(3) A BETTOR WORLD has good speed and with a better trip, this gelding can take these to task for all the cash. (5) RED ROCK closed strongly for the show spot last time around. (7) BAGS OF MONEY fits well in here.

Race 7

(8) SARNO did not do so well at The Meadowlands but the good news is he is back at Yonkers where he has done a whole lot better; worth a closer look. (6) LARUSSA STL put in a mild rally for third money last out at Tioga. (4) SPORTS SINNER Two sharp efforts upstate puts this guy in the mix.

Race 8

(2) BIG IS BETTER Sharp in his last three tries. Sophomore can top these at his best. (4) ALWAYS A FLYIN Hoosier invader has good early zip to contend with this group. (6) WAKINYAN was second best in his most recent start.

Race 10

(1) JACKED UP showed signs of life upstate last out. Ten-year-old returns to Yonkers and this looks like a perfect spot for him to get it done tonight with Sears at the controls. (4) RELENTLESS G drops a notch in class and Brennan signs on. (5) OLDE TIME HOCKEY could be right square in the mix with Bartlett taking over.

Race 11

(5) I DREAMED A DREAM Clearly this gelding is knocking at the door. Might be ready for the cameraman tonight. (8) KEHMMYWOOD gets a bad draw but fits with these. (3) WORLD CUP CULLEN gets serious post relief.

Race 12

(1) SIR MICHIGAN Z TAM moves to the 1-hole and that might be the ticket to get this guy home to victory. (3) POINTSMAN rallied for the second spot last time out. (7) EXIT CAM has scored in his last two.

KEY STAT: Belgium have won seven of their last eight competitive matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Algeria have some decent players coming through but are some way off reaching their potential and could suffer a heavy defeat against Belgium, who are approaching their peak in time for Brazil 2014. The Belgians will be without Christian Benteke but Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku could cause havoc against a suspect Algeria defence.

RECOMMENDATION: Belgium-Belgium

KEY STAT: Brazil have won their last ten fixtures

EXPERT VERDICT: Brazil had to work hard for their 3-1 victory over Croatia and may not have everything their own way against Mexico in Fortaleza. Mexico were comfortable 1-0 winners over Cameroon on Friday but showed defensive weaknesses and may be punished by the tournament hosts.

RECOMMENDATION: Brazil 2-1

KEY STAT: South Korea have won their first match at the last three World Cups

EXPERT VERDICT: South Korea are not expected to make much of an impression in Group H but can show they mean business by beating Russia in Cuiaba. Some good young players are coming through the South Korea ranks – they were third at the 2012 Olympics – and they may have the edge over the Russians, who disappointed at Euro 2012.

RECOMMENDATION: South Korea

TUESDAY 17TH JUNE

v
Mexico v Brazil

TEAM NEWS

Brazil forward Hulk is a doubt to face Mexico after missing training on Monday because of pain in his left thigh.Ramires is thought most likely to deputise if Hulk is not risked, which could mean a switch to 4-3-3 to try and counteract Mexico's wing backs.Mexico coach Miguel Herrera says he will field an unchanged line-up in an attacking 5-3-2 formation.Javier Hernandez, Mexico's third highest scorer of all time, is again expected to be among the substitutes.
MATCH PREVIEW

Brazil's national football team seldom lack buoyancy but they have been repeatedly sunk by Mexican waves in recent year.No team has beaten Brazil in the 21st century as often as Mexico, who have managed six wins and two draws in 12 meetings during that period. The Mexicans also won the last meeting of the 20th century, in the 1999 Confederations Cup final. But it was the 2012 Olympic final defeat that hurts Brazil the most, even though it was not a recognised senior international. Oscar, one of five first-team regulars for Brazil who played in that final, admits: "Of course I was very sad. It is a medal that Brazil have never won and we lost the final."We know that Mexico are a good team, they always give Brazil a hard time and it won't be any different when we play in the next match. They play the ball out from the back well and are very good on the counter-attack."

Brazil actually won 2-0 in the most recent encounter a year ago this week in a Confederations Cup group game at the same venue in Fortaleza.Having both won their opening games, the winner of Tuesday's match will be on the cusp of qualification for the knockout stage. Mexico captain Rafael Marquez knows that keeping World Cup poster boy Neymar will be key to causing an upset."We have to cover, have two against one, be fast and reduce the spaces on the pitch and not let him (Neymar) play," Marquez said. "We know the talent of Neymar, Oscar, Hulk but we will train in ways to handle them. We have to make the most of this opportunity - it is a showcase for all of us."
MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

  • Brazil have won all three previous meetings in the World Cup without conceding a goal: 4-0 in 1950, 5-0 in 1954 and 2-0 in 1962.
  • Brazil and Mexico last met in the 2013 Confederations Cup, at the same venue as this game on 19 June. Luiz Felipe Scolari's side won 2-0 thanks to goals from Neymar and Jo.
  • However, Mexico have won seven of the last 13 meetings (D2, L4) over the last 15 years - the most of any nation against Brazil during that period.
  • Mexico have only beaten the Selecao once on Brazilian soil: 2-1 in a friendly on 31 October 1968.
  • Scolari has faced Mexico once before at the World Cup, when his Portugal side won 2-1 in a group game in 2006.
Brazil

  • Brazil have won their last 10 matches, scoring 33 goals and conceding only three.
  • They are now unbeaten in 38 successive matches on home soil, with their last defeat coming against Paraguay in August 2002.
  • Neymar has scored 33 goals in only 50 appearances for Brazil and is already joint-seventh in the national team's list of all-time goalscorers. He has scored 24 goals in his last 29 international appearances.
Mexico

  • Mexico have qualified for the last 16 in five successive World Cups, only to be knocked out at that stage on each occasion.
  • They have won six and lost only two of their 10 matches under Miguel Herrera.
  • Oribe Peralta has scored nine goals in his last seven competitive appearances for Mexico, including the winner in the opening group stage game of this tournament

v
Algeria v Belgium

TEAM NEWS

Belgium's Romelu Lukaku is fit to play after overcoming an ankle injury picked in their last pre-World Cup friendly.Kevin De Bruyne and Divock Origi also have ankle problems, while several other players are nursing minor knocks following feisty training sessions.Algeria's main concern is over midfielder Hassan Yedba, another player with an ankle injury.Otherwise, coach Vahid Halilhodzic has a fully-fit squad, led by captain and ex-Rangers defender Madjid Bougherra.
MATCH PREVIEW

Belgium return to the world stage after a 12-year absence with much hype and expectation. The Red Devils are many people's dark horses for World Cup glory this summer, having rebuilt their infrastructure and footballing reputation.Their deep-rooted rebuilding programme has helped them unearth talents such as Vincent Kompany, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku, household names to a Premier League audience. Yet in truth their whole squad play for high-profile clubs across Europe's elite leagues. The absence of injured Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke places a huge responsibility on the 21-year-old shoulders of Lukaku. The Chelsea man, on loan at Everton during the 2013-14 season, is positively relishing the challenge. "I love pressure. I embrace it. If you are scared of pressure, you don't play well," he said.Lukaku has also defended the bruising challenges in training this week that have left many of the Belgian players nursing minor injuries. "You need this," said Lukaku. " It shows that we want to win. Our training sessions are all like competitive matches."

His coach, Marc Wilmots, Belgium's record World Cup scorer, has tried to play down expectation given their lack of tournament football. He said: "You cannot buy experience, you have to fight for it. I don't know how they will experience this first moment, What is most important is team spirit and we have that."Belgium may be the favourites in Group H, but the improving Algerians are tipped by many to qualify for the knockout stage at the fourth time of asking. Their hopes this time are have been boosted by an influx of France-born players with Algerian parents or ancestry. Valencia midfielder Sofiane Feghouli is one such player expected to help take Algeria to the next level. The Desert Foxes' initial aim is to score within 35 minutes; failure to do so would see them at least equal an unwanted record of 517 minutes World Cup without a goal, currently held by Bolivia.
MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

  • This is the first competitive match between the two countries. Their inaugural meeting in 2002 ended goalless. Belgium ran out 3-1 winners in a friendly a year later, Emile Mpenza scoring twice.
Belgium

  • Despite this being Belgium's first World Cup since 2002 they began the competition as fifth favourites to win the competition, behind Brazil, Argentina, Germany and Spain.
  • Belgium are unbeaten in their last two World Cup group stages, in 1998 and 2002 (W1, D5).
  • However, they have only won one of their last nine World Cup matches, 3-2 against fellow Group H rivals Russia in 2002. They have also kept only one clean sheet during that period.
  • Eight of Belgium's last 14 World Cup goals have come from set-pieces: five from corners, two from direct free-kicks, and one from an indirect free-kick.
  • Belgium played out the highest-scoring draw in World Cup history exactly 60 years ago to the day of this match - 4-4 against England.
Algeria

  • Algeria have failed to score in their last five World Cup matches, a record they share with Bolivia. It is 481 minutes since Djamel Zidane, no relation to Zinedine Zidane, scored their last goal back in 1986.
  • The Desert Foxes have attempted 71 unsuccessful shots during this period.
  • Algeria won six of their eight qualifying matches, losing to Mali and in the first leg of their play-off to Burkina Faso.
  • Islam Slimani scored five goals in qualifying, the equal-highest of African players present at the World Cup, alongside Ivory Coast's Salomon Kalou.
  • Seventeen members of the Algerian squad were born in France.

Russia v South Korea

[h=2]TEAM NEWS[/h]Russia will be without inspirational captain Roman Shirokov, who suffered a tournament-ending knee injury shortly before the finals.
Veteran Aleksandr Kerzhakov is expected to lead the line, with highly-rated Alexander Kokorin playing behind him.
South Korea centre-back Hong Jeong-Ho looks set to be recalled after Hong Myung-Bo's men conceded four goals to Ghana in their final friendly.
Arsenal's bit-part striker Park Chuyong is likely to start up front.
[h=2]MATCH FACTS[/h]Russia head coach Fabio Capello begins his second World Cup with a point to prove. As England head coach, he guided the Three Lions to just one solitary victory in South Africa four years ago, a 1-0 win against Slovenia, as his England side tamely exited the competition at the last 16 stage.
The same cannot be said for South Korea's boss Hong Myung-Bo, he has nothing to prove as far as the World Cup is concerned. Captain of his country at the 2002 tournament, a competition they co-hosted with Japan, Hong was a rock-solid and indeed a calming figure at centre-back for the Taeguk Warriors as they stunned the world by finishing fourth.
For him it's now about taking South Korea's development onto the next stage as football continues to grow in the Asian country. This may be South Korea's eighth straight World Cup finals but they have progressed beyond the group stage on only two of those occasions (2002 and 2010). Already a hero in his country's eyes, Hong's mission now is about a creating a lasting legacy.

Capello has selected an entirely domestic-based squad with 23-year-old Alexander Kokorin the poster boy ahead of the 2018 World Cup, a competition that Russia host: "I really feel a big responsibility because everybody is talking about me as possibly one of the surprises of this World Cup," he has said.
Hong on the other hand has chosen 17 overseas-based players, including 10 who ply their trade in Europe. The likes of Ki Sung-Yong, Kim Bo-Kyung and Lee Chung-Yong are among those known to a British audience. Hong has also selected several of the players that won the bronze medal at the London Olympics, predominantly an Under-23 side, that he also coached,
The match in Cuiaba is a clash of Russian experience against South Korean youth, of Russian pragmatism versus the high-octane football of the South Koreans. It's an intriguing encounter and one that could go a long way to deciding who, if either, of these countries will progress from Group H.
Head-to-head

  • The two countries met in a friendly last November. Russia ran out 2-1 winners but neither of their scorers, Fyodor Smolov or Dmitri Tarasov, are part of their World Cup squad. Kim Shin-Wook had earlier given South Korea the lead.
Russia

  • Russia have not progressed out of the group stage of the two previous World Cups they have qualified for since they gained independence from the Soviet Union (1994 and 2002).
  • Three of the five goals conceded by Russia in qualifying came after the 90th minute mark.
  • Fabio Capello has lost just twice in 20 matches as Russia manager, both 1-0, to Portugal and to Northern Ireland. He has a win percentage of 60%.
  • Russia have only kept one clean sheet in their last six World Cup games, a 2-0 win against Tunisia in June 2002.
  • Alexander Kokorin, aged 23, was the youngest player to score 10 or more goals in the Russian Premier League in 2013-14.
South Korea

  • This is South Korea's eighth straight World Cup appearance; only Brazil, Germany, Italy, Argentina and Spain can boast a longer current streak.
  • The Taeguk Warriors have begun each of the last three World Cups with a win: v Poland in 2002, Togo in 2006 and Greece in 2010.
  • Yet South Korea have only won two of their last 10 World Cup games (against Togo in 2006 and Greece in 2010).
  • South Korea have scored the most direct free-kicks (five) in the World Cup since 1990.
  • Kwak Tae-Hwi, at 31, is the only player in the squad aged over 30 (Russia have seven).

The Walker Group Picks

# 5 KINLY'S PURE HEART 9/2

# 6 RANDOM SYN 8/1

# 3 SAY HEY ELLY MAE 3/1

KINLY'S PURE HEART looks strong to best this field. Hard to pass on this filly with Velazquez in the irons. Velazquez's return on investment over the last month automatically makes this equine a very solid contender. This filly has a strong win percent in dirt sprint races. RANDOM SYN - Is difficult not to examine based on speed figures which have been competitive - 61 avg - of late. Could best this group of animals based on the speed fig - 59 - of her last race. SAY HEY ELLY MAE - Her chances to win are much better this time around facing this softer lot. In this field, this entrant is prominent in earnings per start in dirt sprint races.

# 6 PACHE'S EGO 5/2

# 1 GET Z GOLD 10/1

# 9 KRUYFORLUKE 3/1

PACHE'S EGO looks to be a respectable contender. With a strong 52 speed rating last time out, will clearly be a factor in this competition. Have to wager on this gelding with the strong earnings per start in dirt sprint races. Look for a reliable effort with the class drop. GET Z GOLD - He looks quite good in this slot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the halfway point. If you examine closely, this one has some longshot potential.

#6 B L'S BALLADO (ML=3/1)
#3 DEL MAR HENNY (ML=8/1)

B L'S BALLADO - Note that although this filly finished 2nd in her last race, she was well ahead of the third place horse. This is a classic positive angle. Jockey jumped on this filly's back for the first ride on May 28th. Should know the equine even better this time. Rounding her way back into form. Each of her finish positions is getting better in her recent starts. DEL MAR HENNY - Last contest at Mountaineer on December 26th was a big class drop for this animal. Facing similar foes right here. She should do well this time. This horse is tops in earnings per start. She looks solid in today's race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 NORTHERN BADGE (ML=2/1), #1A AW SHUGA SHUGA (ML=2/1), #5 HAPPY MARCO (ML=4/1),

NORTHERN BADGE - Not likely for this horse to make an impact with no success lately in a short distance event. The speed figs continue to decline, 34/26/21. Not a healthy signal. AW SHUGA SHUGA - You figure that this equine is going to be victorious just because she's always close. Just doesn't win often. HAPPY MARCO - I can't play this repeated non-winner. Gets the assignment completed once in a while.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - B L'S BALLADO - Betting the equine with the best last race speed figure is a good angle. None higher than this filly's last one.

#2 FREERIDE (ML=7/2)
#1 DEPUTY CAVALIER (ML=10/1)

FREERIDE - Stretching a thoroughbred out to a route after two sprints is a classic training maneuver. Last time he ran at this trip he garnered a speed rating good enough to win today's event. This equine is number one in earnings per race entered. He looks solid in today's race. DEPUTY CAVALIER - Rivera and Doran perform well when they partner up. It's hard to beat a +170 return on investment for a jockey and trainer. This is a classic 'Lone Front-runner' scenario. If Rivera gets him out of the gate cleanly it'll likely be smooth sailing.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 MORE HUNDRED ACRE (ML=2/1), #3 PROTECT N SERVE (ML=3/1), #5 ALL ABOUT KARMA (ML=5/1),

MORE HUNDRED ACRE - Can't really back the public's top choice when he has multiple failures as the favorite. PROTECT N SERVE - Doubtful that this equine will finish better than he did last time out when ending up seventh. ALL ABOUT KARMA - Garnered a somewhat easily forgotten fig in the last race in a $20,000 Claiming race on May 17th. Not likely to see an improved performance off of that figure.

#2 FREERIDE is the play if we get odds of 6/5 or better

Preview: Giants (43-27) at White Sox (33-37)

Game: 1
Venue: U.S. Cellular Field
Date: June 17, 2014 8:10 PM EDT

With their star catcher and starting center fielder banged up, the reeling San Francisco Giants hope a much-needed day off will be a nice remedy for an uncharacteristically rough weekend.

The Chicago White Sox sure needed the break as well.

Both clubs look to end losing streaks as they begin a two-game series Tuesday night at U.S. Cellular Field.

Buster Posey had to leave the Giants' 8-7 loss to Colorado on Sunday after taking a hard foul tip to the mask, and Angel Pagan was a late scratch due to tightness in his lower back.

Posey passed concussion tests and plans to travel with the team for this set. It's unclear if Pagan will miss any extra time.

"When your head feels weird and you've taken a couple of hard ones in the last three or four days, it was the right move (to exit the game)," Posey said. "Everything feels normal now. I'm OK."

San Francisco (43-27) still has the best record in the majors, but it's lost six of seven after a three-game sweep by Rockies and is on the brink of dropping four straight for the first time this season.

The Giants were 34-1 when leading after seven innings before losing each game to Colorado when holding such an advantage. Manager Bruce Bochy hopes Monday's off day gives his club a chance to regroup.

'We're a few outs away from a sweep. Instead we get swept, and that's always tough to handle," Bochy said.

"It serves them well, some of those guys, to get a little break."

Pablo Sandoval homered Sunday and enters this series hitting .444 over his last six.

The White Sox (33-37) also got a day off to recharge after being swept by Kansas City, giving them four consecutive losses. They've been outscored 26-6 in that stretch after going 2 for 14 with runners in scoring position during Sunday's 6-3 loss.

Adam Eaton went 6 for 10 in the series and was one of the few bright spots for Chicago, loser of seven of nine.

"Every team is going to go through one of these (stretches)," manager Robin Ventura said. "You have to weather it and stick together and concentrate on the right stuff.

"You get caught up in focusing on the negative stuff, this could continue and get worse. For us, it's concentrate on the game you're playing that day. Make it simple and try to stop it now."

Chicago's last victory came when John Danks gave up two runs in seven innings of an 8-2 win over Detroit on Wednesday. Danks (5-5, 4.17 ERA) has gone 2-1 with a 1.53 ERA in his last four starts, pitching at least seven innings each time.

"I'm in a good rhythm," Danks said. "I'm not going to rest on my laurels. I've been humbled in this game before, so I'm going to try to keep from doing that again."

The left-hander will face the Giants for the first time since the White Sox's 13-8 victory May 18, 2008, when he opposed Matt Cain in the most recent meeting between these clubs.

Cain (1-4, 3.84) will be on the mound for this contest looking to bounce back from a rough outing. He gave up four runs and walked five in five innings of a 6-2 loss to Washington on Wednesday.

It was the right-hander's second start since coming off the disabled list. He pitched seven strong innings in San Francisco's 4-2 win over the New York Mets on June 6.
