Shrinking strike zone has been a boon for MLB Over bettors

Hitting a baseball is described as the hardest thing to do in sports, but over the last season or so – things appear to be getting easier for MLB hitters.

Scoring is up and, as a result, over bettors are cashing in handsomely. Entering play on Monday, the Over is 71-34-4 in the last eight days of major league action and 384-304-27 for the season. That equals a 67.6 percent win rate over the last eight days and 55.8 percent for the season.

And this isn’t just a handful of clubs distorting the totals. Of the 30 big league clubs, only eight teams have played more games resulting in unders than overs.

So why are there some many game scores larger than the betting totals?

As mentioned earlier, and not surprisingly given the link between game totals, scoring is up. In 2014, MLB games averaged 8.14 runs scored per game. This season teams are scoring 9.16 runs per game.

We already talked about how 2017 is on pace to top the all-time record for most home runs in a season.

The spike in home run rate has been so drastic that baseball writers are openly questioning whether or not the balls are being juiced.

Pitchers are having a tougher time right now getting hitters out. The average team WHIP (Walks + Hits per inning) is at the highest mark (1.33) since 2010, and team walks allowed per nine innings is at the highest mark (3.4) since 2009.

FIP (Field Independent Pitching), a statistic which measures the three outcomes completely in control of the pitcher (strikeout, walk and home run), is also at its highest league average (4.22) since 2009.

The reason for the increase in runs scored and over winning tickets might not be anything as nefarious as juiced balls. The biggest advantage hitters are getting at the dish could be a shrinking strike zone.

MLB’s competition committee agreed last year to raise the strike zone so that pitches below the knees would stop being called for strikes by umpires. The league proposed the change in February but the union did not agree to it.

Major League Baseball can change the strike zone without consent from the union but it would have to wait one year after the proposal before the rule change could come into effect.

The data tells us MLB umpires aren’t waiting.

Last season was the first time in six seasons when the strike zone didn’t increase according to Jon Roegele of Hardballtimes.com. Fangraphs took it a step further measuring called third strikes in the lower part of the strike zone and demonstrated that the total is in decline.

We’ll know more as the campaign progresses but for the time being over bettors should continue to enjoy a historical batting season until oddsmakers properly adjust to the rise in runs scored per game.

Here’s a quick rundown of the best over teams in baseball:

New York Mets

O/U record: 27-9-6
Over win rate: 75%

The starting pitching staff was supposed to be the strength of the club, but injuries to multiple starters – including Noah Syndergaard – have weaken the unit significantly. The Mets own the highest team ERA (5.14) in the majors.

Chicago Cubs

O/U record: 27-14-1
Over win rate: 65.8%

The imbalance of over/under record for the defending World Series champions boils down to three of its starting pitchers off to poor starts. The over is a combined 19-6-1 in games Jon Lester, Jake Arrieta and John Lackey take the hill.

Milwaukee Brewers

O/U record: 28-15-1
Over win rate: 65.1%

The high scoring in Milwaukee games is linked to the club’s strong year at the dish. The Brew Crew are second in the majors in team slugging percentage (.462) and first in home runs (65).

Tuesday's Eastern Conference Game 4 Betting Preview: Celtics at Cavaliers

Boston Celtics at Cleveland Cavaliers (-14.5, 215.5)

Cavaliers lead series 2-1

The Boston Celtics recorded an improbable victory to get back in the series and now attempt to even it up when they visit the second-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals. The Celtics appeared ready to go down meekly after losing star point guard Isaiah Thomas but instead posted a final-second 111-108 victory on Sunday to trim their deficit to 2-1.

Thomas (hip) is done for the postseason, so it was backcourt mate Avery Bradley taking the big shot and delivering the game-winning 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds left to cap a comeback from a 21-point, third-quarter deficit. "We were playing way better. I don't know how to phrase it other than that - we were playing way better," Boston coach Brad Stevens told reporters of the difference between Sunday's win and a 44-point loss in Game 2. "We were getting good shots on offense and playing with great purpose, and on defense I thought we were much better than the score indicated. I think that when you play better, you feel better." The top-seeded Celtics broke the Cavaliers' record-tying 13-game postseason winning streak and limited red-hot forward LeBron James to 11 points, his fourth-lowest output in 210 career playoff games. "I had a tough game, period," James told reporters. "I didn't have it. That's all I've got to say about my performance."

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, TNT

LINE HISTORY: Despite the shocking Game 3 loss, oddsmakers aren't deterred, opening the Cavaliers as 15-point home favorites for Game 4. However, bettors think the Celtics will show up again and the line has already moved down to -14.5. The total hit the board at 216 and has been bet down a half-point to the current number of 215.5.

INJURY REPORT:

Celtics - PF A. Johnson (Questionable Tuesday, shoulder), PG I. Thomas (Out for season, hip).

Cavaliers - No injuries to report.

ABOUT THE CELTICS: Marcus Smart was a nonfactor by averaging five points on 2-of-11 shooting over the first two games but he stepped up with Thomas out and put on a spectacular performance. The third-year guard was 7-of-10 from 3-point range while producing 27 points and seven assists and putting forth his typical feisty effort that grates on opposing players. "Everybody had to step up their game, especially with one of our brothers down," Smart told reporters. "Our love and support goes out to Isaiah. We wish he could be here but we understand. We just kept fighting. Everybody did their part."

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS: James was on a tear with eight consecutive 30-points efforts and was averaging 34.3 points before he basically disappeared in the second half by missing eight of nine shots and finishing 4-of-13 from the field. He was testy after Sunday's game and then avoided reporters on Monday to leave his teammates and coach Tyronn Lue to explain his dreadful performance "No blame," Lue told reporters. "We're all to blame. We lost; it happens. For a guy who played great for five straight months, he's got to have a bad game sooner or later. He's human. He didn't shoot the ball well. It wasn't his ordinary game."

TRENDS:

* Cavaliers are 7-0 ATS in their last seven games after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game.
* Road team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
* Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings in Cleveland.
* Over is 21-7 in Cavaliers last 28 games following a SU loss.

WNBA Betting Recap - 5/13-5/21

League Betting Notes (Saturday, May 13 through Sunday, May 21)

-- Favorites went 13-3 straight up (SU)
-- Underdogs went 10-6 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams posted a 9-7 SU record
-- Road teams posted a 10-6 ATS record
-- The 'under' went 10-6

Team Betting Notes

-- Atlanta (2-1) kicked off its season with a pair of road wins and covers, posting its first 2-0 start since the 2014 season. The second victory came at the expense of Chicago (1-2), who began life after Elena Della Donne, who was traded in the offseason. However, it was the Sky winning the second end of the home-and-home in Atlanta, winning 75-71 as 6 1/2-point underdogs to fire out to a 2-1 ATS start.

-- Washington (1-2) suffered a 10-point setback at Seattle (2-1) on Sunday, as the Mystics dropped to 0-3 ATS to kick off their campaign. The 81-71 loss was also the first 'under' result for Washington after a pair of 'over' finishes. The cover Sunday for the Storm was its first of the season in three tries.

-- New York (1-1) split their first two games. They topped San Antonio (0-3) to fire out of the chute with a win, but the Liberty failed to cover in either of the outings, including a 90-71 blasting from Minnesota (3-0) at home. The Liberty should be well rested with five days between that outing against the Lynx and a trip to face Phoenix (2-1) on Tuesday.

-- The Stars might be winless in three tries, but they have been keeping it close. They're 3-0 ATS to start the season, covering all three games as double-digit underdogs.

-- The Lynx will play host to Connecticut (0-2) on Tuesday, and their modest two-game 'over' streak will be put to the test. The 'under' is 2-0 for the Sun so far out of the box.

-- The 'under' is a perfect 3-0 for the Mercury through three outings, but they're just 1-2 ATS during the early going.

-- Indiana (1-2) has failed to cover each of the past two while the 'under' has cashed in each outing.

-- Dallas (1-1) split their first two outings of the season, topping the Mercury as eight-point underdogs in the desert on May 14. They also played the Lynx tough, dropping an 89-87 decision on Saturday as 10 1/2-point underdogs. As such, the Wings are an impressive 2-0 ATS to start.

-- Last, but certainly not least, the defending champion Los Angeles (2-0) have won and covered their first two games at home, winning by an average of 10.0 points per game. They'll hit the road for the first time, kicking off a three-game sojourn against the Fever on Wednesday.

NHL | Penguins vs Senators
Play on: UNDER 5 +124

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach NHL Tuesday Free Pick UNDER 5 goals (+125) in Ottawa Senators vs Pittsburgh Penguins @ 8 ET - Over the past 5 months - dating all the way back to mid-December - the Penguins have gone 4 straight games without an under only 1 time! That said, the last 3 games have featured 2 overs and a push and I like the value being offered on the under here. Nice plus money return with the UNDER 5 goals in this one. Ottawa knows they have to return to a defensive-minded game after getting completely out-skilled in the Game 5 loss in Pittsburgh. The Senators found out the hard way that they certainly are unwise to try and get into a fast-paced shootout with the Penguins. That said, and returning to home ice after back to back losses, I look for the Sens to have strong emphasis on defense and clogging up the neutral zone to slow down the Pens skilled forwards in this one. The Senators are fighting for their playoff lives after blowing the 2-1 series lead and the under is 28-15 in Sens games this season when they are playing with revenge. Free Pick UNDER 5 goals in Ottawa Tuesday evening. Best of luck, Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach
